Joe Fanning’s absence and a rare blank for Paul Mulrennan last Monday means there’s no change at the top of the Ayr jockeys’ championship but a double for Andrew Mullen and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Jason Hart meant both Scottish riders boosted their points totals to 34 and 28 respectively

Jim Goldie had a frustrating day with Two Auld Pals, Banner Road and Ayr Poet all finishing second but the trainer added 6 points to his tally to stay 44 points clear of Dumfriesshire rival Iain Jardine, who kept up his fantastic run of form with a double thanks to Borough and JKR Cobbler

In the Owners’ championship, Mrs Helen Whillans moved in to the top six with 9 points after See My Baby Jive’s third consecutive Monday win at the track. Jason Hart had ridden the mare to her previous victories but Danny Tudhope took over last week and the jockey was completing a double on the day after riding Dorothy Lawrence to victory in the juvenile maiden.

ARCHIE WATSON

24% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

9 WINS FROM 38 RUNNERS

The Watson stable celebrated THREE winners at Royal Ascot last month with Bradsell, Rhythm N Hooves and Saint Lawrence and his Coventry Stakes runner-up Army Ethos had made a winning debut here at Ayr the month before. The trainer saddled Chriszoff to win on handicap debut at Class 4 level earlier this month and the 3 yearold steps up to Class 2 from a 6lbs higher mark in this afternoon’s 10 furlongs handicap at 4.15 under Hollie Doyle.

IAIN JARDINE

12% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

38 WINS FROM 324 RUNNERS

Iain rounded off a terrific weekend for the stable with a double here at Ayr last Monday and the Carrutherstown yard is well represented again as the trainer looks to continue his horses’ impressive run of recent winning form Borough and JKR Cobbler provided the latest Ayr winners for the Jardine team 7 days ago and there’s every chance there could be more celebrations today, just 9 days on from the yard’s current star jumps performer Born Famous completing a fabulous 5-timer in the £55,000 Summer Plate at Market Rasen.

KATIE SCOTT

16% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 11 WINS FROM 69 RUNNERS

Katie’s yard sent out a career-best 17 winners in 2022 and the young Borders’ trainer looks all set to post another healthy best-ever total by the end of 2023 The Scott horses are nearly always in the running for the best turned out awards before they strutt their stuff to great effect on the track itself and today’s runners include the newcomer Jungle Jean for Ursa Major Racing in the juvenile maiden at 2.30pm.

HOLLIE DOYLE

19% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

5 WINS FROM 27 RIDES

Hollie continues to be the leading female rider in the jockeys’ championship where she’s battling with husband Tom Marquand for second place at the moment, behind reigning champion William Buick. The jockey finished joint second in the championship last year when she became the first female jockey to win a major European Classic on Nashwa, the filly she’ll partner in Thursday’s Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood (3.35). Hollie has 3 rides today for Michael Bell, Archie Watson and Katie Scott.

JASON HART

14% S U C C E S S RA T E

AYR

RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

30 WINS FROM 221 RIDES

Jason has 4 rides here today and is looking forward to teaming up again with superstar filly Highfields Princess in Goodwood’s Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes on Friday (3.35), with a trip back to York on the cards later in the month as she looks to defend her crown in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes on the Knavesmire. The Hawick-born former champion apprentice had to step aside for Danny Tudhope on See My Baby Jive as the mare completed a hat-trick of Monday Ayr wins 7 days ago, but he’s back on board this afternoon as Donald Whillans’ mare goes for a 21-day 4-timer in the 6 furlongs handicap at 3.05

ANDREW MULLEN

12% SU CC ES S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

28 WINS FROM 236 RIDES

Andrew has had an excellent season at Ayr so far and his record with trainer Iain Jardine bears the closest inspection with the pair teaming up for another winner at last Monday’s fixture with JKR Cobbler “Midge” has also been picking up plenty of outside rides this season, including for Charlie Johnston, but his 4 mounts today are all for the Jardine yard on Dingwall, Kats Bob, Paddy The Squire and Bulls Aye.

TODAY’S TRAINERS & JOCKEYS

He has won four times from 5f to 6f on ground varying from good to soft. Beaten 7l behind Mecca’s Angel at 20-1 when 9th of 19 on his latest outing in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York over 5f (good) last month. Drop back into handicaps should suit.

FORM RATINGS

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

Brando was the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, 17th September, 2016.

HOW TO BET

IAIN FERGUSON TRIBUTE

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our recently retired Head of PR, Iain Ferguson, after a short illness.

Iain was a much loved member of the Racecourse and Western House Hotel team for 20 years and our thoughts are with Elaine, Lorna, Emma and all the Ferguson family at this sad time

Iain started his working life in the media back in 1971 with a local News Agency in Prestwick and went on to edit the Ir vine Times, Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald and Ayr Advertiser before moving to the Daily Record in 1989

He became Assistant Editor at both the Record and the Sunday Mail and also enjoyed a broadcasting career which saw him host the West Sound Saturday afternoon show from 1987-89 and again from 2003-05.

On a sporting front Iain’s two great loves were Horse Racing and Ayr United. Iain had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of racing and any fact that he wasn’t aware of he used his journalistic background to ferret out that nugget of information, there would be a glint in his eye at a result. He had a keen interest in the histor y of Ayr Racecourse and was always delighted when even strangers would send him an artifact or a programme from a long and distant time in the past.

If truth be told it wasn’t a job for him being involved in horse racing it was a passion and even after his retirement in September we were delighted that he agreed to stay on at Ayr in a part-time role, its odds on that he will be looking down on future race meetings

He will be sorely missed by us all

SEE MY BABY JIVE once again appeared to have something in hand when successful over C&D last week and Donald Whillans’ mare still looks ahead of the handicapper, off just 2lb higher. Zegos Surprise competes off a 4lb lower figure than for her recent runner-up effort at Ripon and could give the selection most to think about. The unexposed Bloomin Robbery should appreciate this return to 6f and makes each-way appeal.

In an intriguing contest it may pay to side with NOVAK, who keeps on pulling out more as he rises up the handicap and is looking for his four-timer. The seventh furlong may suit him even better and he can see off Black Friday, who is dropped in class off what looks a favourable mark. Gainsbourg did win last time and is hard to ignore, while American Affair is also of some interest on his better form.

Paddy The Squire has been knocking hard on the door of late and produced his best effort last time when he was narrowly denied over this trip at Pontefract. CHRISZOFF is preferred, though, because he is on a roll at present and winning C&D form might just give him the edge as he goes in search of a fourth straight success. Knockbrex has struggled the last twice but has been highly tried and cannot be given up on yet..

Bonito Cavalo may have let down favourite-backers more than once this year but he has picked up his share of minor money, including at Musselburgh most recently. His day will surely come soon, but he might have to wait a little longer because Ayr regular SIXCOR was just denied in a blanket finish at Musselburgh last week and can compete off 1lb lower. Ski Angel and Genevieve are out of the handicap, but open to improvement.
