AYR GOLD CUP TRIAL, CLASS
3, 6F £30,000
MONDAY JULY 17
We stage the second running of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial as the highlight of our card on Glasgow Fair Family Day on Monday July 18.
This race was introduced last year for horses aged 3 years old and upwards and rated between 71-90 and also for horses rated 91 and 92.
We think it creates the ideal platform for horses progressing through the handicap ranks and encourage them to go on and run in either the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold, Silver or Bronze Handicaps.
The first running attracted a field of 10 and was won by the Tim Easterby trained Snash, ridden by David Allan who justified favouritism in holding off top weight Aberama Gold to win by half a length with Bernardo O’Reilly back in third.
All three of these horses went on to run in the Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup last September with Bernardo O’Reilly faring best of the three finishing third behind the winner Dusky Lord and Woven.
The depth of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial was further underlined when Call Me Ginger who finished sixth went on to win the valuable Portland Handicap at Doncaster.
Ayr Racecourse Managing Director David Brown said : “I was delighted with the first running of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial. It was a competitive race with several of the runners going on to contest either the Ayr Silver or Bronze Cups.
“I would hope this year’s race builds on what we achieved last year and with £30,000 in prizemoney on offer on a Monday afternoon I’m sure we will see another fiercely contested race featuring horses who will return here in September to run in one of the three Cups.”
A stunning trophy previously run for a race named the Squadron Gallop will be held by the winning owner for a year.

DISTANCES
Call Me Ginger has stepped forward with each run this season and the seven-year-old makes plenty of appeal in his attempt for a third victory over course and distance. Walking On Clouds scored here on his penultimate start and warrants plenty of respect back at this level, having finished third in a stronger contest at Hamilton last time, but the vote goes to MONSIEUR KODI Richard Fahey’s gelding returned to winning ways at Thirsk when last seen and a 3lb rise is unlikely to stop him from progressing further.

Berry Edge followed his half-length second over course and distance with a near-miss at Beverley off this mark and another bold bid is expected. However, the top-weight may have to play second fiddle again, this time to HAVANA PARTY, who scored over this track and trip in style before going close to defying a 5lb rise over 1m1f at Hamilton last time. He likes it here and should appreciate the return to 1m2f. Broctune Red is feasibly treated on his early-season form, while Cosa Sara is interesting now upped in distance.

Not beaten far on his last two starts over further, ALPINE STROLL should be well suited by the slight drop in trip and he can gain a first win since last August. Ed De Giles’ charge is narrowly preferred to C&D winner Ravenscraig Castle and La Pulga, who won on his only go at this trip in June. Geremia is another consistent sort at this level and he must enter calculations.

TOP TRAINERS TOP JOCKEYS
GRANT TUER
14% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
6 WINS FROM 44 RUNNERS
Grant has established himself as a top northern trainer over the past few seasons and sends out plenty of winners from his North Yorkshire base. He runs Walking On Clouds in today’s feature race the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap at 2.55pm and this horse has already won over course and distance this season. That was back in May and he’s only 1lb higher today and should go well again in the hands of Olly Stammers.

LINDA PERRATT
5% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
10 WINS FROM 196 RUNNERS
Linda has been among the winners of late and comes here this afternoon where she will be hoping to continue her good run. She saddles Judgment Call in the racingtv.com Handicap at 4.40pm and this horse is a two time course winner whose latest run was a very creditable fifth in a decent York handicap where he was only beaten two and a half lengths. A reproduction of that form would give him every chance this afternoon.
JIM GOLDIE
11% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
54 WINS FROM 493 RUNNERS
Jim’s record at Ayr has no equal and he is on track for one of his best ever seasons here and is in double figures already He has several runners this afternoon including Call Me Ginger who won the Ayr Bronze Cup in 2021 and who runs in today’s headline contest the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap. This is a slight drop in class from the races he has been running in of late and he could be hard to beat.
DANNY TUDHOPE
14% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
29 WINS FROM 196 RIDES
A jockey who has been amongst the best in the north for many years and rode the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup last year on Summerghand, which was a landmark moment for the rider who was brought up just 10 miles up the road in Irvine. He has three rides this afternoon for David O’Meara including Cerulean Bay in the EBF Stallions Novice Stakes at 2.20pm. This horse has only run once winning at Hamilton last month.
CONNOR BEASLEY
10% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
14 WINS FROM 140 RIDES
Connor rode his first ever winner at Ayr almost 11 years ago and since then has built up a reputation as one of the finest riders in the north. He rides a lot of the Michael Dods runners and partners Woven for Michael in the feature race the Every Race Line On Racing TV Handicap at 2.55pm The seven-year-old came second in the Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup here last September

OLIVER STAMMERS
15% SU CC ES S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS

There could be more to come from Bay Of Hope after he got off the mark over this trip at Redcar, but he has no margin for error off a 6lb higher mark and preference is for JUDGMENT CALL A winner over course and distance in May, he ran well in defeat at York last month after a slow start and should relish a return to a venue he likes. Deputy contends on the form of his one-length second off 1lb lower at Doncaster last time, while Cold Stare continues to run well in defeat and a return to 7f may help.

THE CALTONIAN improved beyond all recognition when runner-up over C&D on his handicap debut last month and this appeals as an ideal opportunity for him to go one better. Joe Fanning taking over in the saddle can only aid his cause and he may have too much for the relatively consistent Caribbean Sunset and Kraken Power, who wasn’t beaten far over C&D in May. Flavius Titus and Wrecked It Ralph are also capable of being in the shake-up.
