AYR GOLD CUP TRIAL, CLASS

3, 6F £30,000

MONDAY JULY 17

We stage the second running of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial as the highlight of our card on Glasgow Fair Family Day on Monday July 18.

This race was introduced last year for horses aged 3 years old and upwards and rated between 71-90 and also for horses rated 91 and 92.

We think it creates the ideal platform for horses progressing through the handicap ranks and encourage them to go on and run in either the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold, Silver or Bronze Handicaps.

The first running attracted a field of 10 and was won by the Tim Easterby trained Snash, ridden by David Allan who justified favouritism in holding off top weight Aberama Gold to win by half a length with Bernardo O’Reilly back in third.

All three of these horses went on to run in the Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup last September with Bernardo O’Reilly faring best of the three finishing third behind the winner Dusky Lord and Woven.

The depth of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial was further underlined when Call Me Ginger who finished sixth went on to win the valuable Portland Handicap at Doncaster.

Ayr Racecourse Managing Director David Brown said : “I was delighted with the first running of the Ayr Gold Cup Trial. It was a competitive race with several of the runners going on to contest either the Ayr Silver or Bronze Cups.

“I would hope this year’s race builds on what we achieved last year and with £30,000 in prizemoney on offer on a Monday afternoon I’m sure we will see another fiercely contested race featuring horses who will return here in September to run in one of the three Cups.”

A stunning trophy previously run for a race named the Squadron Gallop will be held by the winning owner for a year.

LOOKING AHEAD...

3 NEIGH CHANCE

Neigh Chance is the runner with the best local knowledge having been born and brought up on the track and who can be seen on this early summer mornings doing some training.

4 HOPE

6 PANDAMONIUM

7 ERNIE THE ELF

Ernie represents the Night Before Christmas Campaign a charity based in Annbank and Ernie and his fellow elves work all year-round helping families with children’s clothes and toys and last year delivered over 6800 red bags of joy to families at Christmas.

8 BLACK PANTHER

Representing our superheroes this afternoon the fictional king of Wakanda is sure to start as a short price favourite but will his superpowers be enough to see off his opponents today.

9 CAPTAIN CONKER

Kilmarnock’s ever popular mascot is another regular here at our Mascot Rcaes and will be hoping to score a victory especially with arch rival Pandamonium in the field.

Narrowly denied over C&D last time out, ONE LAST HUG can gain compensation and notch up a third Ayr victory already this season. Jim Goldie’s eight-year-old remains on a fair mark and can see off the well-handicapped Ben Macdui and Soul Seeker, who has been knocking on the door of late. Showalong may have disappointed over track and trip on his latest run, but he is a player based on the pick of his form.

PAUL’S DOUBLE SEES HIM CLOSE IN ON JOE

Joe Fanning held on to the lead in the 2023 Jockeys Championship at Ayr despite drawing a blank at the track on Unite Scotland Summer Raceday last month.

Joe is six points ahead of Paul Mulrennan who rode Makarova to win the Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes Listed Race and who was also successful on B Associates for trainer Jim Goldie in the Bridgend Motor Group Handicap.

In the Trainers Championship Jim Goldie is setting a hot pace on 66 points from Iain Jardine on 33 points and Charlie Johnston who is in third spot with 21.

The consistent Novak won the David MacDonald is 50 Handicap on June 24 to send Mrs Francesca Mitchell into the lead in the Owners Championship.

Either side of being beaten a neck into second here and at Goodwood, Sennockian was an honest third in a warm contest at the latter venue. He should be bang there again but a chance is taken on DINGWALL, who was only fourth on his debut here but the winner almost landed the Coventry, with the runner-up going one better next time. Vantheman surpassed market expectations on his Haydock introduction, while Master Franca should be on the premises too.

OLD SMOKE was not at his very best at Musselburgh last time but he was only beaten two lengths in a very good renewal of the London Gold Cup prior to that. The application of first-time cheekpieces could help Richard Fahey’s three-year-old bounce back to that level of form here and he will be tough to beat if doing so. Unexposed hat-trick seeker Chriszoff is an obvious threat to the selection, while Dubai Souq is the pick of the remainder.

SPARKS FLY is one of the most progressive handicappers in training at present, starting her turf career off a mark of 59 at Windsor in April and she now competes off 93 after five wins on the bounce. She didn’t look to be nearing the ceiling of her ability at Chester last time and must be stuck with. Young Fire and Gincident have both won three times already in 2023, while Power Of Gold got off the mark at Doncaster. Shahbaz is just one other to consider.
