WELCOME to Coral Scottish Grand National Saturday and to what is one of Scotland’s truly great sporting occasions featuring the finest day’s jump racing in the north.

The Coral Scottish Grand National holds a very special place in horse racing and once again the field includes highly rated chasers from some of the leading stables in the UK and Ireland.

Before today’s big race we have a special rendition of Flower Of Scotland performed by Siobhan McAuley and David Douglas which will add to the atmosphere.

Lucinda Russell has two runners in the Coral Scottish Grand National and I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate her, Peter Scudamore, Derek Fox and the entire team on their magnificent achievement in winning last week’s Grand National with Corach Rambler

Could team Russell make it an Aintree-Ayr double? Now that would be a great story

I‘m delighted Rachael Blackmore is here to ride Telmesomethinggirl for owner Kenny Alexander in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase. She is a great ambassador for the sport and her participation this afternoon adds even more to the occasion.

I’d like to give a special mention to Coral whose name has become synonymous with the Scottish Grand National. Their sponsorship began in 2007 and since then, thanks in no small way to their support, the race has grown in stature and is one of the outstanding highlights of the jumps season in Britain. In addition to the Coral Scottish Grand National, Coral also sponsor the Scottish Champion Hurdle which has attracted a high class line up of 12 runners.

We are also grateful to our other sponsors on what is a superb afternoon’s racing.

Albert Bartlett have sponsored the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase for many years and Jordan Electrics are also long standing supporters of the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase.

I welcome back CPMS who sponsor the Novices’ Champion Chase and also Tennent’s for their backing of the Tennent’s Handicap Hurdle.

We have first time sponsors today in Macklin Motors whose Macklin Motors Toyota Coming To Ayr ‘Hands & Heels’ Handicap Hurdle features some promising young conditional jockeys and amateur riders.

The Golf Inn Prestwick once again sponsors the final race of the afternoon, the Golf Inn Prestwick Open National Hunt Flat Race. This race has a habit of producing some very good winners and this year’s field is full of promising young horses.

A big welcome also to the ITV Racing Team headed by Ed Chamberlin who are here this afternoon providing outstanding coverage for those who can’t be here in person today

Thank you all for being here today and I hope you have a successful and enjoyable day

WELCOME TO AYR
David Brown Managing Director Ayr Racecourse Ayr Racecourse is one of six Large Racecourses to be awarded the ROA Gold Standard Award.

TOP JOCKEYS

NICO DE BOINVILLE

Nico is always a welcome visitor to Ayr and comes here with high hopes of a few winners this afternoon. He rides Dusart for owner Ronnie Bartlett and trainer Nicky Henderson in the Coral Scottsh Grand National and this horse was impressive when winning the CPMS Novices’ Champion Chase here last year Nico also takes the mount on First Street in the Scottish Champion Hurdle and his other mounts include City Chief in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase.

RACHEL BLACKMORE

It’s great to welcome Rachel to Ayr for our biggest day’s racing of the season and she rides Telmesomethinggirl for Henry de Bromhead in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Novices’ Chase. The mare won a Beginners’ Chase at Navan in January and runs in the colours of Kenny Alexander made famous by the brilliant Honeysuckle. Rachel has only ridden here four times and her presence here this afternoon is sure to attract a lot of interest.

BRENDAN POWELL

This talented young rider has forged a good partnership with trainer Joe Tizzard and he rides Oscar Elite for the yard in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase. His last outing saw him finish fifth to Corach Rambler in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham. Brendan also rides Elixir de Nutz in the opening contest the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase.

SAM TWISTON-DAVIES

Sam is one of the finest jockeys in the country and has a great record in the Coral Scottish Grand National having won on Vicente in 2016 and 2017 He rides Undersupervision in this afternoon’s renewal for his father Nigel. Sam also takes the mount on Milkwood in the Scottish Champion Hurdle and this partnership won the 2021 running of the race and will be hoping for a repeat this year

JONJO O’NEILL Jnr

Jonjo Jnr is one of the finest young riders in the country and although he has ridden at Ayr only a few times in his short career he has already been on the scoresheet here. He is booked to ride Monbeg Genius for his father Jonjo senior in the Coral Scottish Grand National. This horse was third to subsequent Grand National winner Corach Rambler in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham and gives his jockey a great chance of a first Coral Scottish Grand National win.

BRIAN HUGHES

Brian will be crowned champion jumps jockey for the third time in four seasons at Sandown next week and would dearly love to head there on the back of a successful afternoon here. His rides today include Richmond Lake for trainer Donald McCain in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Novices’ Chase a race Brian won on Cloudy Dream in 2017 He also partners Pay The Piper in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase which opens the card at 1.15pm and his Coral Scottish Grand National mount is Famous Bridge for Nicky Richards.

SEAN QUINLAN JACK TUDOR

Another outstanding young jockey who rides Kitty’s Light, the favourite in the Coral Scottish Grand National. The 20 year-old rode the gelding to be second to stablemate Win My Wings in last year’s contest and was also in the saddle for his win in the Eider Chase at Newcastle in February He rode a winner at the meeting last year when Stringtoyourbow won the Thistle Cabs Group Hurdle.

Sean rode Takingrisks for trainer Nicky Richards to win the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National and partners Small Present for Sue Smith in today’s big race. He rides Return Ticket in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase the horse that won the race last year Sean also gets the leg up on Ned Tanner in the CPMS Novices’ Handicap Chase and this horse has solid course form.

TODAY’S JOCKEYS

TOP TRAINERS

CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS

Christian wrote his name into the record books when saddling the 1-2 in last year’s Coral Scottish Grand National with Win My Wings crossing the line in front of Kitty’s Light. The latter runs again this afternoon with Jack Tudor riding, while the stable is also represented by Cap du Nord. Can Christian pull off another famous victory and another 1-2? Sponsors Coral installed Kitty’s Light as their favourite as soon as the entries were published so he must have a great chance.

NICKY HENDERSON

Nicky is a regular visitor to this Festival and has captured nearly all of the major races with the exception of the Coral Scottish Grand National He could rectify that this afternoon when Dusart runs in the big race with Nico de Boinville taking the ride. He won the CPMS Novices’ Champion Chase at this fixture last year and runs in the colours of owner Ronnie Bartlett. First Street represents Nicky in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle, a race he last won with Verdana Blue in 2019 while he runs Balco Coastal in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase.

JONJO O’NEILL

Jonjo has high hopes this afternoon with Monbeg Genius who runs in the Coral Scottish Grand National this afternoon coming here after finishing third to Grand National winner Corach Rambler in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham last month. The seven-yearold was only beaten two and a quarter lengths and that is rock solid form. Before Cheltenham he had won three chases in succession and earlier this week his odds were cut massively by Coral.

SANDY THOMSON

Sandy has gone close in the Coral Scottish Grand National in the past with Dingo Dollar second in 2021 the same year as The Ferry Master was fourth and he saddled Seeyouatmidnight to finish third in 2016 He is double handed in today’s feature with Empire Steel and Flower Of Scotland and both could run big races. Earlier on the card Sandy runs Donna’s Double, owned by David Armstrong and Lee Westwood, in the CPMS Novices’ Champion Chase.

JOE TIZZARD

Joe saddles his first ever runner at Ayr this afternoon when Elixir de Nutz contests the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase with Brendan Powell riding. Throughout the afternoon Joe has a few more runners with Oscar Elite set to contest the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase after running fifth behind Corach Rambler in the Ultima Chase at Cheltenham in March.

PAUL NICHOLLS

Paul who is set to be champion trainer again this season comes here this afternoon with some outstanding runners. He has won the Scottish Grand National three times previously with Vicentre (2016 & 2017) and Belmont King (1997). Today he runs Threeunderthrufive and Flash Collonges in the big race this afternoon. Rubaud is the Nicholls runner in the Coral Champion Hurdle and carries the colours of Chris Giles and Brendan McManus.

LUCINDA RUSSELL

Can Lucinda make it an Aintree-Ayr double a week after winning the Grand National with Corach Rambler? What a fabulous story that would be. Lucinda won the Scottish National in 2021 with Mighty Thunder and he is one of two intended runners for the stable today with the other being Your Own Story Later on in the card Serious Operator runs for the stable in the Tennent’s Handicap Hurdle at 4.10pm.

DAN SKELTON

Dan’s record at this Festival is excellent and he has a strong hand of runners today He kicks off with Frere d’Armes in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase and he has won two out of his three chase starts. In the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase Dan is represented by the consistent Sail Away and 35 minutes later L’Eau du Sud lines up in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle. Unexpected Party is the stable runner in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase.

A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.15pm to 12.30pm, the parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).

Today’s parade features a host of familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including 2019 Scottish Grand National winner Takingrisks.

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows,

• Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities;

• Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses;

• Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing;

• Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care.

RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horse ball.

Racehorses (RoR) Parade

15-year-old by Presenting, formerly trained by Nicky Richards Breeder – Keith Douglas Duke of Navan was one of the flagbearing northern horses for a few good years for trainer Nicky Richards for owners David and Nicky Robinson. Duke of Navan was broken in by jockey Brian Harding who also rode him on the racetrack, He was a yard favourite, and he was Nicky’s ride towards the end of his training. He has gone full circle and is now living the good life with Brian’s wife Kelly who has taken him to many fun rides, camps and he’s been hunting all winter He won his first RoR show in hand. He is ridden over the fells regularly and he will be aimed at the RoR classes in the summer Kelly says, “He is adored by all of us, and Duke of Navan still gets visits from all who have been involved with him from the beginning”.

10-year-old by Arabian Gleam, formerly trained by R Mike Smith. Breeder

Corsby Racing

Granite City Doc was bred and owned by his rider’s husband and friends throughout his career He is our horse of a lifetime winning four times, three of which came at his beloved Hamilton. Granite City Doc was retired in September 2022 where he came home and had a nice long holiday He came back into work in February this year so is in the early stages of his retraining and has attended a couple of RoR flat work clinics, he is also showing a willing attitude at learning to jump. We plan to continue with his education and hopefully try some show jumping later this year

11-year-old by Aqlaam, formerly trained by Jim Goldie Breeder – J Ellis

Strong Steps aka Striker has been in the care of today’s rider since March 2021. He is showing great potential and ability in cross country and dressage training, they have done a lot of BHS ride outs which went very well. They have excelled in the show ring since the start where he seemed to excel at winning and placing at county shows and qualifying for the Jockey Club RoR National Championships. Natasha is so overjoyed with his progress and willingness on the journey to get where they are today It was not easy and still a work in progress every day The plan is to continue showing and do some dressage this year and hope to maybe get out jumping at some point in the future.

13-year-old by Golden Tornado

formerly trained by Nicky Richards

Breeder - James Murray

The career highlight for Takingrisks was victory in the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National when ridden by Sean Quinlan. He is now happily retired with Catherine Walton in Northumberland, where Catherine runs a pre-training and breaking yard. Over the winter Takingrisks has enjoyed regular hunting with local packs and is the perfect lead horse for young horses and breakers. He has been to an RoR clinic and a twoday camp which we both really enjoyed. This summer we are hoping to attend similar events, the long-term plan is to try some eventing.

THE SCOTTY BRAND HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 1) (PREMIER HANDICAP) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

2022 WINNER RETURN TICKET (IRE)

SP: 11/1

Age/Weight: 9-11-4

Jockey: Sean Quinlan

Summary: This two mile and half a furlong contest turned into an epic battle after the last with Return Ticket repelling the challenge of Malystic to win by a neck. Sean Quinlan’s mount led before four out and battled all the way up the home straight to just hold on.

TODAY’S

TIPS

Dan Skelton likes to target this meeting and looks to have an ideal candidate for this in the shape of FRERE D’ARMES who had to settle for second when looking to bag the hat-trick at Ascot. The winner has scored again since, while this six-year-old gets to run off the same mark, which could prove very beneficial. Last year’s chief protagonists Return Ticket (first) and Malystic (second) are back for more, while Elixir De Nutz had been in excellent form before a below par effort in the Grand Annual.

TODAY’S TIPS CITY CHIEF took another step forward when landing the Towton at Wetherby and the steadier of 12 stone may not be enough to stop Nicky Henderson’s progressive chaser from completing a hat-trick. Reynoldstown winner Oscar Elite was far from disgraced in fifth in the Ultima at Cheltenham and a bold bid is expected, while Sail Away is capable of better now returned to 3m. Handicap debutant Where It All Began and Temptationinmilan represent the Irish challenge and they can’t be discounted in a competitive contest.

CHAMPION HURDLE FACTS

FIRST RUN

The Scottish Champion Hurdle was first run in 1966 which was the same year that the Scottish Grand National moved to Ayr after Bogside Racecourse closed. Blue Venom, ridden by Mr P Adams won the race.

FAMOUS HORSES

Famous horses to have won the race include legends such as Night Nurse (1976), Sea Pigeon (1977, 1978) and Alderbrook in 1996, the year after he won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Bird’s Nest also won this race in 1979 and 1981.

BIG RACE JOCKEYS

Andy Turnell, Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Johnson have all ridden three Scottish Champion Hurdle winners, with the last named hoping to make it number four this afternoon.

WINNINGMOST TRAINER

Martin Pipe won the race a total of four times with Sayaparee (1990), Granville Again (1992), Blowing Wind (1998) and Copeland (2004)

SECOND IRISH WINNER

Anna Bunina became only the second Irish trained horse to win the Scottish Champion Hurdle when she won last year. The only other Irish based winner was Captain Christy in 1973. Trained by Pat Taaffe he went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following year. Anna Bunina, trained by John McConnell, bids to win the race again today.

THE CORAL SCOTTISH CHAMPION HURDLE (A LIMITED HANDICAP) (CLASS 1) (GRADE 2) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards and due to the quality of the race it has been awarded Grade 2 status. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap, so higher rated horses will have to shoulder more weight than their lower rated rivals.

2022 WINNER

ANNA BUNINA (FR)

SP: 6/1

Age/Weight: 6-10-4

Runners: 8

Jockey: Sean Bowen

Trainer: John C McConnell

Summary: Irish raider Anna Bunina had finished second in this race in 2021 and went one better here. Showing great resolve she was pushed along after the third from home and was short of room at the last before keeping on in the closing stages to win by a length from West Cork.

TODAY’S TIPS Last year’s winner Anna Bunina heads to post in a bid to retain her crown, but she’s now 12lb higher than for that success and it might be worth taking a chance on another previous winner, MILKWOOD Neil Mulholland’s charge was impressive when coasting home to beat the aforementioned in the 2021 renewal. He’s not been at his best so far this season but, from 4lb below that winning mark, it would be no surprise were he to shine back at this venue. Colonel Mustard appeals as a key player following his second in the Morebattle. First Street and Soaring Glory should not be underestimated either

TODAY’S TIPS BALCO COASTAL can be forgiven his disappointing effort when failing to beat a rival home in the Turners Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham last month as the ground had turned against him. However, a reproduction of his penultimate start when chasing home the likeable Gerri Colombe at Sandown gives him strong claims. Thunder Rock didn’t appear to stay when sixth behind The Real Whacker in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase and should find this more to his liking. FIRST RUN

The Scottish Grand National was first run as the West of Scotland Grand National at a course near Houston, Renfrewshire from 1858 until 1866.

BOGSIDE

The race moved to Bogside Racecourse in Irvine, approximately 10 miles from Ayr, in 1867. In 1966 the first running of the race at Ayr took place with African Patrol ridden by John Leech winning.

COULD IT BE A DREAM DOUBLE?

Lucinda Russell celebrated her second Grand National win with Corach Rambler’s success at Aintree last Saturday. She trained Mighty Thunder to win the 2021 Coral Scottish Grand National and she goes for a second success in the race today. Lucinda also runs Your Own Story. Can she make it a dream Aintree-Ayr double?

TREBLE UP?

Since the race moved to Ayr in 1966 only one jockey has won the race three times – Mark Dwyer on Androma in 1984 and 1985 and Moorcroft Boy 1995 Of today’s riders, Sam Twiston-Davies has won the race twice on Vicente in 2016 and 2017. Can he make it three today on Undersupervision.

FEATURE EDITORIAL

SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FACTS

MOST RIDES

Recently retired Richard Johnson rode in this race 19 times which is more than any other jockey. His sole success came in 2011 on board Beshabar for trainer Tin Vaughan.

LIMITED LUCK OF THE IRISH

Only one Irish trained horse has won the race – Huntsman in 1869, trained and ridden by Larry Hyland.

WINNING DISTANCE

2018’s winning distance of a nose when Joe Farrell beat Ballyoptic into second place was the shortest ever winning distance in the race.

WINNING TRAINERS

Paul Nicholls (Belmont King 1997, Vicente (2016 and 2017)) and Nigel Twiston-Davies (Captain Dibble (1992) , Earth Summit (1994) and Hello Bud (2009)) have both trained three winners of the Scottish Grand National. Paul runs Threeunderthrufive and Flash Collonges while Nigel is represented by Undersupervision.

CORAL SPONSORSHIP

Coral took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, the year Hot Weld, trained by Ferdy Murphy and ridden by PJ McDonald won the race. Their commitment to the race has seen it grow to become the fourth biggest race in terms of betting turnover in Britain.

MIGHTY THUNDER

JOCKEY: TOM SCUDAMORE

Patience was the name of the game for jockey Tom Scudamore as he settled Mighty Thunder put the back and only caught the eye turning into the home straight. He was second crossing the last but got up in the last 100 yards to deny Dingo Dollar.

TAKINGRISKS

OWNER: FRANK BIRD

TRAINER: NICKY RICHARDS

JOCKEY: SEAN QUINLAN

Since landing this contest in 2019, Takingrisks has been a real force over the longer trips and now has an official rating of 150. Being sent off at 16/1 in the Grand National, unfortunately, he was pulled up and will not be seen at Ayr today.

In 2019,Takingrisks blundered at the very first fence but Sean Quinlan managed to keep the partnership intact and gradually worked his way through the field, hitting the front four out and despite not jumping the last all that well, he had plenty in hand to win by four lengths from Crosspark.

JOCKEY: CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS

This was a class performance from the co-favourite of Scotland’s richest jumps race who travelled well throughout the four mile marathon, making steady headway from the 16th before taking the lead four from home. She went clear after the third last, putting seven lengths between herself and stablemate Kitty’s Light.

JOE FARRELL

OWNER: M SHERWOOD, N MORRIS, R CURTIS

TRAINER: REBECCA CURTIS

JOCKEY: ADAM WEDGE

Joe Farrell is a horse whose racing career has been hampered by injury but he turned up in top condition last year to spring a 33-1 surprise for trainer Rebecca Curtis and jockey Adam Wedge.

It was an enthralling race and at one point it looked as if Vicente was going to create history by becoming the first horse in more than 100 years to win three consecutive Scottish Grand Nationals.

But it was not to be and when Joe Farrell went clear three out, it looked to be just a matter of how far, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Ballyoptic and jockey Tom Bellamy had other ideas and they battled all the way to the line with Adam Wedge’s mount holding on by just a nose.

VICENTE

OWNER: MR TREVOR HEMMINGS

TRAINER: PAUL NICHOLLS

JOCKEY: SAM TWISTON-DAVIES

Vicente, winner of the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2016, was bought by Trevor Hemmings to run in the Grand National at Aintree which was run just two weeks before its Scottish equivalent in 2017 but fell at the first and was rerouted to Ayr.

Sent off 9/1 joint favourite, he travelled well through the race under a patient Sam TwistonDavies ride and stayed on well all the way up the run-in to touch off Cogry, trained by Sam’s father Nigel, by a neck.

He become the first horse since Androma in 1984 and 1985 to win the race back to back

THE TENNENT’S HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-yearolds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120 In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 3) (CATEGORY 1 ELIMINATION) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six and will be run over two miles.

2022 WINNER AUTUMN RETURN (IRE)

SP: 11/4 F

Age/Weight: 5-10-9

Runners: 8

Jockey: Brian Hughes

Trainer: Ruth Jefferson

Summary: This contest has produced some excellent winners over the years and the 2022 renewal turned into a real battle all the way to the line with Autumn Return prevailing by a head from Magic Wave

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): N Richards (30 wins from 171 runners, 18%) runs LUCKIE SEVEN TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): G Elliott (10 wins from 93 runners, 11%) runs CATO CAPONE LONGEST TRAVELLERS: CHAMPAGNE ADMIRAL trained by P A Fahy, CATO CAPONE trained by G Elliott, WHOSMYDADDY trained by J Mcconnell, GIACOSA & FOURTOWNS trained by S R B Crawford, RECODED trained by L Fowler, BUMBLE BEE BET trained by C Byrnes, all Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS Luckie Seven confirmed the promise of his debut second at Doncaster by going one better at the same venue, although this race can throw up a smart winner and he must concede weight to some interesting rivals. Impatient couldn’t justify favouritism at Newcastle, but there was nothing wrong with his effort to fill the runner-up berth. Slugger and Giacosa took minor honours here but even though he lacks their experience under Rules, WHOSMYDADDY created a good impression when scoring between the flags and he is preferred.

The British Horseracing Authority will amend Rule (F)45 and Rule (F)92 in the event that raising of the weights at the 24 hour stage proves necessary Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they MUST notify the Racing Calendar Office IMMEDIATELY when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The British Horseracing Authority will modify the Rules of Racing as a consequence of providing two reserves for the Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Steeple Chase.
