Welcome to Ladies Day, the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival. Scotland’s biggest and richest jumps fixture.

Over the next two days we’ll stage some of the finest National Hunt racing the sport has to offer featuring top horses, trainers and jockeys.

This afternoon’s feature race is the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and today’s contest marks the 30th sponsorship at this Festival by the Hillhouse Group.

Sponsors are undoubtedly more important than ever and their support helps us stage the best racing possible and continue to attract quality runners. I’d like to thank the Vernon family for this generous and continuing support.

Today’s renewal features some highly talented chasers from leading stables and promises to be an exciting and highly competitive race.

I’d also like to thank all our other sponsors this afternoon. Coral came on board as principal sponsors of the Scottish Grand National in 2007 and their unstinting commitment to this Festival ever since has seen it grow into one of the most important fixtures of the jumps racing calendar

The Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle is always a highly competitive race and once again we have a quality field headed by last year’s winner Get A Tonic.

Remus Uomo and Quiz Clothing are sponsors who have become synonymous with Ladies Day as they sponsor not only their respective races the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle and the Quiz Clothing Novices’ Hurdle, but also support our Style Awards which form an integral part of the day

Seko Logistics, one of the world’s leading logistic service providers, have also been loyal supporters of Ayr Racecourse for a number of years and sponsor the Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

Thistle Cabs, one of Ayrshire’s leading taxi companies, sponsor the Thistle Cabs Group Handicap Hurdle and are another company who are regular supporters of the Racecourse.

A big welcome to Largs Ladies who successfully bid for race sponsorship at a Prince’s Trust event and are proud sponsors of the Largs Ladies Lwob Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all of our sponsors today

Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns during the afternoon and there are terrific prizes in four categories – Most Stylish Lady, Most Stylish Gent, Most Stylish Hat/Headpiece and Most Stylish Couple.

There are full details of the Awards in this racecard and I would like to thank all the sponsors - Quiz Clothing, Remus Uomo, Stephanie Gallen Millinery, Dr Andrew Culbard Aesthetics, Moet, Corney & Barrow, Village Hotel, Taylor Manning, Ayr Rugby Club and Cherry Soda.

I’d also like to thank the Ayr Racecourse team who have worked tirelessly to ensure this day is a great success.

To everyone, enjoy your day!

TOP JOCKEYS

BRIAN HUGHES

The two-time, about to be three-time champion jockey will be one of the busiest riders over the weekend with mounts in most of the major races. One of his more interesting mounts this afternoon is Aubis Walk who runs in the Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at 3.35pm.

Trained by Nicky Richards and owned by Kenny Alexander of Honeysuckle fame, this mare won at Sedgefield in February and steps up in trip today As ever Brian is in terrific form and he is also a course specialist around Ayr having ridden more than 100 winners here over the years.

SEAN QUINLAN

Another northern based rider who is a regular at Ayr, his biggest moment here came in the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National on Takingrisks for trainer Nicky Richards and in many ways that was a catalyst to lift his career to another level. Sean is much in demand over the two days and his mounts this afternoon include Snowy Clouds for Nicky Richards in the Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at 4.10pm. This seven-year-old is on a hat trick having won at Catterick in February and Market Rasen earlier in the month.

RYAN MANIA

A high class jockey, Ryan has ridden the runner up in the Coral Scottish Grand National on two occasions –on Dingo Dollar in 2021 and Aurora’s Encore in 2012. The latter famously went on to win the Grand National the following year with Ryan in the plate. He has some excellent rides this weekend including Bass Rock for Sandy Thomson in today’s feature race the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase. The Raymond Anderson Green owned seven-year-old is a two time winner of the Tennent’s Handicap Hurdle at this meeting.

DARYL JACOB

Daryl has been enjoying a fantastic season at Ayr riding the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede owned horses for trainer Stuart Crawford, and his stats here for 2022-2023 read seven wins from 21 rides. He rides Champ de Gane for these connections in today’s Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at 4.10pm.

PADDY BRENNAN

Paddy is one of the leading jockeys in the country and rode Hello Bud to win the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2009 He rides Manofthepeople for trainer Fergal O’Brien in tomorrow’s race. This afternoon Paddy’s mounts include Great Heart’jac in the Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

HARRY COBDEN

Harry has some excellent rides this afternoon including top weight Saint Calvados in the feature race, the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase at 3.00pm. In the Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Harry teams up with Sabrina who runs in the Owners Group colours. Harry’s other mounts this afternoon include Afadil in the opening race on the card the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle.

TOM BELLAMY HENRY BROOKE

Henry is long established as one of the top riders in the country and has a good book of rides this afternoon. In the opening race the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle he partners the John Quinn trained First Impression who has won here three times on the Flat. He also rides Imperial Merlin for John in the Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at 1.50pm and Whodini, trained by Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero in the Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

It’s good to see Tom here this afternoon and he rides Killer Clown for trainer Emma Lavelle in the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and then takes the mount of Ratfacemcdougall in the Thistle Cabs Group Handicap Hurdle. A rare visitor to Ayr, Tom will be hoping to get a winner this afternoon.

TODAY’S JOCKEYS

TOP TRAINERS

NICKY HENDERSON

Nicky regularly makes the journey south from his Seven Barrows base in Upper Lambourn to Ayr for the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival and he has been rewarded with many winners over the years, Verdana Blue in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle in 2019 and Theinval in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase in 2019 and 2021. Nicky’s intended runner in the Coral Scottish Grand National is Dusart who won the CPMS Novices’ Chase on the card last year This afternoon he is represented by the lightly raced Persian Time in the Quiz Clothing Novices’ Hurdle.

PAUL NICHOLLS

Paul has six runners this afternoon including top weight Saint Calvados in the feature race, the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase, a race he last won back in 2012 with The Knoxs. Sabrina is the stable’s representative in the Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle and Paul has an outstanding chance of saddling the first winner of the Festival with Afadil in the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle.

DAN SKELTON

Dan is one of the leading trainers in the country, currently in second place in the Trainers’ Championship to Paul Nicholls and he has a fantastic record at this Festival including on the opening day having trained four of the last five winners of the Hillhouse Handicap Chase. He doesn’t have a runner in the Hillhouse this year but has a few runners with good chances today including Get A Tonic in the Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle. The seven-year-old won the race last year and will be fancied to go close again.

SANDY THOMSON

Sandy comes to the Festival with a strong group of horses and will be hoping to be among the winners today Bass Rock runs in the Raymond Anderson Green silks in the feature contest, the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and War Soldier is an interesting contender in the opening race, the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle. Sandy runs Empire Steel and Flower Of Scotland in tomorrow’s Coral Scottish Grand National, a race in which he has gone close in the past with Dingo Dollar second in 2021 the same year as The Ferry Master was fourth and with Seeyouatmidnight third in 2016

NICKY RICHARDS

The master of Greystoke near Penrith has an excellent record at Ayr and saddled Takingrisks to win the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2019 A win that gave him great joy as his father Gordon won the race with Playlord in 1969 and Four Trix in 1990 He comes here this afternoon on the back of a very impressive winner in the last race at Aintree on Saturday with Florida Dreams. His runners today are Aubis Walk in the Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle and Snowy Clouds in the Seko Logistics Scotland Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

LUCINDA RUSSELL

The trainer of the moment Lucinda comes here after saddling the brilliant Corach Rambler to win the Randox Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, six years after she won the legendary race with One For Arthur Her yard is in fantastic form and she has a strong hand of runners this afternoon including Traprain Law in the opening Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle and Aurora Thunder in the Coral Racing Club Seafield Trophy Mares’ Handicap Hurdle.

OLLY MURPHY

Olly is a fine young trainer who has a good strike rate at Ayr, and has a good chance of adding to that today when he runs Hourvari in the Quiz Clothing Novices’ Hurdle at 2.25pm. This horse has won his last two starts at Lingfield and Market Rasen and should run a huge race in what is a highly competitive five runner contest.

DONALD MCCAIN

Donald is enjoying another tremendous season and will be hoping for a successful Coral Scottish Grand National Festival. He will he hoping to get the meeting off to a winning start with Forcing Bull who is two from two over hurdles and lines up in the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle. Donald’s runner in today’s feature race the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase is Richmond Lake who runs in the colours of the late Trevor Hemmings.

THE REMUS UOMO HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

Summary: There was a lot of market confidence behind this Gordon Elliott trained seven-year-old and he didn’t disappoint, making steady headway from three out and challenged at the last, showing great determination up the run-in to win by a length and a quarter from Soft Risk.

TODAY’S TIPS A case can be made for several of these, but AFADIL seemed to appreciate a drop in grade when finishing a decent second behind stablemate Blueking D’Oroux at Ascot earlier this month. Paul Nicholls’ four-year-old drops in class and it is likely there could be much more in his locker Forcing Bull makes his handicap debut following an emphatic win over 2m 1f at Sedgefield last month and is feared, while Traprain Law and Shelikesthelights add further spice to the race.

THE LARGS LADIES LWOB NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a three miles and half a furlong furlong handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130

TODAY’S TIPS Most of these are stepping into the unknown with regards to their stamina, but it would be folly to suggest in-form maiden hurdle winners Langdale Lane and Young Buster don’t have scope to improve for a sterner test. However, TWIN POWER strongly appeals dropping back in class after contesting the EBF Final, and Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old could provide the answer Brandy Mcqueen was a creditable seventh in the Pertemps Final and can also go close.

THE QUIZ CLOTHING NOVICES’ HURDLE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)

RACE DESCRIPTION

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles, four and a half furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

TODAY’S TIPS Idalko Bihoue has some questions to answer having pulled up in the River Don at Doncaster and the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham, but he can’t be dismissed with his sights now lowered. Preference, however, is for HUGOS NEW HORSE, who finished a fine third in the ultra-competitive EBF Final at Sandown in March and a fifth win of the season could be on the cards. We take a look back at the last five winners of The Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase

NIETZSCHE

OWNER: D GILBERT, M LAWRENCE, A BRUCE & G WILLS

TRAINER: BRIAN ELLISON

JOCKEY: JONATHAN BURKE

Dan Skelton came into this race trying to make it four wins in a row having won previously with Two Taffs (2017), Value At Risk (2018) and Born Survivor (2019). He saddled the 15/8 favourite Not That Fuisse but in a thrilling finish he went down by a neck to Brian Ellison’s game Nietzsche.

The eight year-old made some progress in the home straight but fiddled the third last and was then pushed along and was three lengths down in fourth place jumping the last but kept on gamely to lead inside the final half furlong and hold off the favourite.

BORN SURVIVOR

OWNER: MRS G WIDDOWSON & MR R KELVIN HUGHES

TRAINER: DAN SKELTON

JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON

Dan Skelton made it three winners in a row in this race when Born Survivor followed Two Taffs (2017) and Value At Risk (2018) in winning this prestigious contest which is the feature race on the Friday at the Coral Grand National Festival.

The eight year-old gave a fine display of jumping under Harry Skelton and led before four out and was left clear two out, to win convincingly by seven lengths from Sizing Granite who had Robbie Power in the plate.

JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON

Think Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase think the Skeltons This was the fourth time in five years that trainer Dan Skelton had saddled the winner of the race, and the third time his brother Harry had ridden the winner. Beakstown was a well backed favourite and certainly didn’t let his supporters down with a fine round of jumping and he always looked the most likely winner. A good leap at the last sealed the contest for connections and tightened Dan Skelton’s grip on this famous race.

VALUE AT RISK

OWNER: MR DM HUGLIN

TRAINER: DAN SKELTON

JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON

Trainer Dan Skelton secured back to back wins in the feature race of the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival, when Value At Risk won the 2018 running under a positive Harry Skelton ride. The nine year-old travelled well throughout and piled it on in the home straight winning by a length from Sizing Platinum. Value At Risk lines up in the race again this afternoon.

A maiden over hurdles coming into this race, Two Taffs built on his third in a novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival and scored in fine style given a confident ride by Davy Russell. A winner at the meeting in a hurdles contest the year before, the Dan Skelton -trained horse was driven out to win by three lengths.

It was a fine performance from the seven year-old who was enthusiastically greeted by his owners in the winners enclosure.

FOURTH RACE 3.00

THE HILLHOUSE QUARRY HANDICAP CHASE (CLASS 2)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

TODAY’S TIPS RICHMOND LAKE has had a fine start to his chasing career and the step up in trip seemed to bring out the best in him when scoring at Haydock last month. A 5lb rise for that comfortable success could prove lenient and he is narrowly preferred to Baron De Midleton, who arrives on a hat-trick. Bass Rock had been running consistently well until a disappointing effort here last time out and is no forlorn hope.

THE THISTLE CABS GROUP HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 3)

RACE DESCRIPTION

This three miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125 In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

2022 WINNER STRINGTOYOURBOW (IRE)

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): S R B Crawford (17 wins from 111 runners, 15%) runs KINGFISHER LANE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D Skelton (11 wins from 58 runners, 19%) runs DON HOLLOW LONGEST TRAVELLERS: ATACANTER trained by R O’Sullivan & KINGFISHER LANE trained by S R B Crawford, both Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS DON HOLLOW was too bad to be true when a well-beaten seventh on his handicap debut at Kempton, but Dan Skelton’s charge could regain the winning thread now up in distance. Quick Draw has questions to answer having pulled up over fences at the same meeting, although he won his two races prior to that. He may have been freshened up by a small break, while Milan Bridge should also appreciate a return to hurdles and improvement from him isn’t out of the question.
