Welcome to Ayr Racecourse for Virgin Bet Raceday our first Saturday fixture of 2023 and whether you are a first time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today

I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Invades who are bringing around 500 students here today for the first time to enjoy their Races Day Party in their own exclusive marquee.

We certainly have a very busy day ahead with seven exciting races and a Food & Drink Festival plus a chance to win a fantastic holiday to Dubai in association with Racecourse and our friends at Stewart Travel.

Our Food and Drink Festival provides the opportunity to savour some amazing cuisine from woodfired pizzas to gourmet street food, fish and chips to pancakes to Caribbean Cuisine. And of course there will be various drinks vendors indoors.

Our feature race today is the Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Handicap Chase at 3.55pm and I’d also like to mention Ardera Cross who tries for his ninth course win and his third in under a month in the Virgin Bet Fives Handicap Chase at 2.45pm.

1.35pm- Barnabas Collins looks a big threat here but is carrying plenty of weight. Ninetofive might be worth another chance with after showing some promise at Kelso in his last two starts there for Sandy Thomson. The lightly raced 6-year-old has yet to register a win but a mark of 98 seems fair here today.

2.10pm- Catchmeifyoucan was a nice winner of a Perth handicap last September on good ground. William Shanahan takes off 7 lbs today which may be very useful for the top weight now stepping back in trip to 2 miles 5 furlongs. Aurora Thunder is a previous course and distance winner for Lucinda Russell. She had every chance of winning a 3-mile hurdle race here at Ayr last year when falling late on in the race She drops in class today and is respected off the revised mark of 115 with Partrick Wedge taking off 7 lbs.

2.45pm- Ardera Cross could be still well ahead of the handicapper, getting an 8 lb rise for the 15 lengths victory at Ayr at the end of last month. The 12-year-old looks like he is back to very good form and is a big danger here off bottom weight. Captain Quint found the heavy ground too much on at Kelso in December but returned to better from on soft ground at Carlisle and is given a good chance here today.

3.20pm- Maimie’s Magic is going for her 3rd handicap win in a row but may want more ease in the ground. A chance is taken here with the bottom weight, Serious Ego. The bottom weight was beaten by 10 lengths at Carlisle last time out, but the form of that race has worked out well since that appearance. She is dropped 4 lbs in the weights and has every chance here for trainer Nicky Richards with Sean Quinlan booked again to ride

3.55pm- Readysteadybeau can make the running if needed here with first time visor applied to sharpen him up and the ground should suit today also Crixus’s Escape has been disappointing lately and probably best watched after first time wind -op Cash To Ash is a course and distance winner He is respected off a mark of 115 for trainer Mark Walford and a chance is taken that conditions are in place for him to run a big race here.

4.30pm- Glen Cannel is a course and distance winner from January and has been running consistently well in good company. A big run is expected from the selection, now returning back to 2 ½ miles. Choosethenews is a course and distance winner and another big run is expected today for the Mark Walford yard

5.05pm- Coniston George ran a good 2nd in a bumper at Haydock in December but preference is for Raffles Wonder (NAP) who won a bumper last time out at Sedgefield on soft ground. The form of that race has worked out well with the second horse winning next time out. Rob Roy Macgregor might be worth a market check and could be best of the newcomers.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

A few of these like to make the running, with handicap hurdle debutant Gift Of Raaj an appealing option after making all to win a novice at Doncaster. Ninetofive is also considered given his low mileage and scope now he’s had a wind problem addressed. However, BARNABAS COLLINS heads the shortlist given the improvement shown since returning from a break, and the characteristics of this circuit could suit him better than those at Bangor from last time out. My Macho Man is also worth noting.

MAIMIE’S MAGIC caused a surprise on her handicap debut at Kelso in December before proving that effort to be no fluke when backing up at Newcastle. A 5lb rise for that most recent success is unlikely to stop her from taking another step forward. THE BIGGEST AND RICHEST JUMPS FESTIVAL IN SCOTLAND

THE biggest and richest two days’ jumps racing in Scotland the Scottish Grand National Festival takes place on Friday April 21st and Saturday April 22.

The Scottish Grand National itself this year carries £200,000 in prize-money with £112,540 going to the winner

Up to 30 horses will race round the four mile course negotiating 27 fences and who can forget last year’s spectacle when Christian Williams saddled the 1-2 with Win My Wings crossing the line seven lengths in front of Kitty’s Light.

Trainers up and down the country are preparing their horses for the race and entries close on Tuesday April 4 so we will have a better idea then of who is likely to be contesting the race this year

The Scottish Grand National is the fourth biggest race in the UK in terms of betting turnover and regularly attracts a television audience of more than a million viewers on the main ITV channel.

But it’s always better to be there in the stands roaring on your favourite horses and there are still some club badges and grandstand tickets available so the message is book now to avoid disappointment as the Saturday invariably sells out.

With the race cancelled due to the pandemic in 2020 and run behind closed doors in 2021 when Lucinda Russell’s Mighty Thunder won we raced earlier in the month last year so it’s good to be back to total normality for the first time since Takingrisk’s victory in 2019.

In total there are 15 races across the two days with total prizemoney exceeding £600,000

The main supporting race on Saturday’s card is the Scottish Champion Hurdle a Grade 2 contest over two miles which was won in 2022 by Irish mare Anna Bunina who had run second in the race the previous year but made no mistake this time and the word is John would like to run her again this year and although she has entries at Cheltenham next week she is likely to head here in April.

Firmly established now as one of the top races on Scottish National day is the CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase which was first introduced back in 2018 and has £50,000 in prize-money. Nicky Henderson trained Dusart to win in 2022 with Nico de Boinville riding.

The Scotty Brand Chase opens the afternoon’s proceedings at 1.15pm and this two mile test is another race that has seen some fine winners down the years including Return Ticket from the Rebecca Menzies yard last year and Theinval in 2018 and 2021.

The Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase is another Grade 2 race which sees some up and coming chasers battling it out over two and a half miles.

Owner Mark Dunphy celebrated in style last year when Do Your Job won the race and he wore a scarf carrying his racing colours when mounting the podium to lift his prize.

Friday’s card features the £50,000 Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase which has become one of the favourite races of trainer Dan Skelton who has won three of the last four runnings including with Beakstown last year.

Hillhouse are the longest standing sponsors at the track and first supported the Festival in the mid 90s and have stayed loyal ever since. We are looking forward to another excellent renewal this year

The Mares’ Handicap Hurdle is another excellent heat on the opening day. Run over three miles this is a test of stamina won by Dan Skelton’s Get A Tonic in 2022.
