AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
10 WINS FROM 49 RUNNERS
Olly enjoys sending his horses on the long trek from his stables near Stratford-uponAvon in Warwickshire to Ayr where he has enjoyed some good winners in recent years. This afternoon he has several runners and will be hoping to add some more successes. He is represented by Thomas Darby in the Weatherbys nhsstallions.co.uk Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at 1.50pm with Sean Bowen riding.
ROSE DOBBIN
13% S U C C E S S RA T E
AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
9 WINS FROM 67 RUNNERS
Rose has established herself as one of the leading trainers on the northern circuit sending out plenty of winners from her stateof-the-art Northumberland stables. This afternoon she runs both Wild Polly and Aazza in the Follow @racingtv on Twitter Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at 2.25pm. The former won here back in October 2020 while the latter was a winner just nine days ago at Doncaster
DONALD MCCAIN
17% S U C C E S S RA T E
AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
11 WINS FROM 63 RUNNERS
Donald is one of the most successful trainers in the country and is no stranger to Ayr where he has enjoyed many successes over the years particularly with champion jockey Brian Hughes partnering his horses. This afternoon Donald and Brian team up on Jipekaa Machin in the opening juvenile hurdle. The four-yearold won at Sedgefield in November and will be fancied to run a big race this afternoon.
DANNY MCMENAMIN
11% S U C C E S S RA T E
AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
11 WINS FROM 102 RIDES
It is just under five years ago since Danny rode his first ever winner from his first ride in public here at Ayr and since then he has gone from strength to strength and is now rated as one of the top jockeys in the north. He has an excellent record here dating back to that first ever success and his mounts today include track winner Gaillimh A Stor for Nick Alexander in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at 1.50pm.
SEAN BOWEN
21% S U C C E S S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
10 WINS FROM 47 RIDES
Sean currently lies in second spot behind Brian Hughes in the Jumps Jockey Championship and is enjoying his best ever season and comes here this afternoon for several rides including on Thomas Darby in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at 1.50pm and newcomer Bolster Bob in the National Hunt Flat Race in the 4.10pm both trained by Olly Murphy
HENRY BROOKE
11% SU CC ES S RA T E AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS
9 WINS FROM 79 RIDES
Henry comes here this afternoon with a few interesting rides including Rocco Storm for his trainer and brother Danny in the Book For The Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase at 1.17pm This horse is in a rich vein of form having won three of his last four starts including in a chase here on January 9. Henry’s other mount today is the Donald Whillans trained Enemy At The Gate in the Weatherbys. shop.co.uk Handicap Hurdle at 3.35pm.
TODAY’S TRAINERS & JOCKEYS
Weatherbys sponsor three of this afternoon’s seven races, starting with the four-runner Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, a class 3 event over 3m.
10-year-old Thomas Darby shoulders top-weight and the former highclass hurdler is having just his third start over fences. Beaten at Warwick and Kempton in November 2019, he quickly reverted back to the smaller obstacles and landed the Grade 2 Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury two years later. Down to a mark of 150 over hurdles, he races off 145 here so could easily bounce back to form. It is worth remembering that he finished runner-up to Klassical Dream in the 2019 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, with stable-mate Itchy Feet (a winner at Huntingdon on Friday) in third and recent Thurles winner Fakir d’Oudairies back in fourth.
Gaillimh A Star was a faller on his chase debut at this track last month, whilst Famous Bridge needs to build on his third placing at Doncaster on his first start over fences. In contrast, Gold Cup Bailly is progressing rapidly as a chaser and following a successful debut at Wexford, Stuart Crawford’s seven-year-old has won twice at this track. He stepped up in distance to score over this trip last time and having skipped potential engagements at Cheltenham at the weekend, comes here in search of a four-timer and is right at the top of his game The softer the ground, the stronger his chance.
Uncle Alastair carries top-weight in the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Guide Handicap Chase, a 0-125 contest over 2m5½f Now 11, he wears first-time cheek-pieces and the fact that he has only had six runs since November 2018 suggests that the three-time hurdles winner has been difficult to keep sound. Two of those three wins came at this track, as did one of his two bumper wins.
Clan Legend and Calipso Collonges are also older contenders who are dropping in the weights, whilst the former’s stable-mate Dubai Days has won a handicap hurdle and two novices’ handicap chases at this track, and appreciated stepping back up in trip behind O’Toole at Newcastle last time
The other quartet are all novices, with Donna’s Double beating High Moon here 30 days ago The runner-up has a 4lb pull at the weights for a 3¼-length defeat, but wouldn’t be certain to turn around the form. Grand Voyage won at this track in November and would have appreciated a stronger gallop last time, whilst Readysteadybeau shaped really well on chase debut (also here), but hasn’t really built on that for Lucinda Russell.
The same trainer is represented by One Mill Harbour in the weatherbysshop co.uk Novices’ Handicap Hurdle and having caught the eye with how he travelled last time, is one to consider from an opening mark of 108. He will need to settle better, however
Fia Fuinidh won with plenty in hand over course-and-distance last month and has gone up 10lb since. He would probably appreciate more testing ground, whilst Thistle Ask actually finished 7 lengths in front of him here in December and they meet on the same terms this afternoon. James Ewart’s six-year-old is another for any shortlist, with champion jockey Brian Hughes taking over in the saddle

START IN FRONT failed to land a blow in the Chatteris Fen at Huntingdon last month, but he bolted up at Wetherby on his penultimate start (Jipekaa Machin behind in fifth) and that form gives him leading claims. Jipekaa Machin could find improvement for the application of a first-time tongue-tie, while Irish raider Jackpot De Choisel, who hit the frame at Fairyhouse on his hurdling bow, is likely to play a leading role too.

Rocco Storm is bound to be popular here, having won three of his last four starts, but a 7lb rise for his most recent success makes life tougher. Preference instead is for NETYWELL, who impressed over C&D last month and looks capable of going in again. Duty Calls (third) has almost eight lengths to find with the selections on that run, while Newcastle winner Ritson is another to consider.

With just the four runners heading to post, it is easiest to side with the bang in-form GOLD CUP BAILLY, who kept on well to secure a comfortable victory over this course and distance last month. A 4lb raised mark for that success looks unlikely to stop him. Thomas Darby makes a switch to fences for the first time since 2019 but is feared most, while Famous Bridge also has a squeak.

Aazza was a comprehensive winner of her latest outing at Doncaster when storming 20 lengths clear of her nearest pursuer. However, the seven-year-old has a 13lb rise to contend with and the vote, therefore, goes to EL POPPOCHAPO Stuart Crawford’s mare shed the maiden tag here in novice company last month and the manner of victory suggested the step up in distance on her handicap debut would potentially see her improve again. Lady Tremaine ran well on her return at Newcastle on Boxing Day and is another to note.

A taking winner here last time out on just his second start in this sphere, there should be plenty more improvement forthcoming from DONNA’S DOUBLE as he looks to overcome a 4lb rise. Course specialist Dubai Days can give him the most to think about following a respectable placed effort at Newcastle, while others to note include the consistent Uncle Alastair, who looks as though he may be suited by dropping in trip.

FIA FUINIDH bolted up on his handicap debut over this course and distance last month and, given he kept on to score by 12 lengths on that occasion, a 10lb raised mark looks unlikely to stop him following up in this. Thistle Ask finished ahead of the selection in maiden company on his most recent run and can give him plenty to think about off level weights, while Attention All is another who warrants close consideration.

RACE RESULT DISTANCES
Idem and Isenay both have the form in the book to play a leading role, but the vote goes to CHALK THAT DOWN. Donald McCain’s charge shaped with promise on her racecourse debut, finishing second against her own sex. The form of that race has worked out well and she’s fancied to go one better with improvement likely. Olly Murphy often does well in these types of contests and Booster Bob merits a place on the shortlist too.
