HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1926 2022 The Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Saturday 17th September

There will be a minute’s silence held at approximately 1.05pm today in tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Everyone at Ayr Racecourse is deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen, and we join the whole country in extending our condolences to His Majesty The King and the other members of the Royal Family.
HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1926-2022
Her Majesty had a life-long passion for horseracing, and it has been Ayr’s great privilege to have witnessed her horses racing and winning here.
Her Majesty’s last winner at Ayr was PIQUANT in the Shaw Memorial Handicap in September 1990 and her final runner here was KING’S LYNN in the Ayr Silver Cup in September 2020.

The Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup once again boasts a high quality field with some of the finest sprinters in the country locking horns over the six furlong course. The Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup also has a top class field.
Today we have an exceptional amount of runners with 131 horses declared to run which is one of the highest if not the highest ever we have seen at this meeting.
The Virgin Bet Doonside Cup oozes quality and remains one of the top middle distance Listed races in the country with today’s renewal living up to this race’s huge reputation.
Jordan Electrics Ltd are one of our longest standing and most loyal sponsors and the Jordan Electrics Ltd Handicap is the final race this afternoon.
My thanks to all of our sponsors. Without them a day like this packed full of quality racing would just not be possible.
I’d also like to thank today’s other sponsors. Remus Uomo have been associated with our Style Awards for many years and have also supported races at our Festivals, but this is the first time they have sponsored a race on Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Saturday We thank them for their continued support.
I’d like to say a huge thanks on behalf of everyone here at Ayr to Virgin Bet for their sponsorship of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and nine races including the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup. We welcomed the Virgin Bet team here for the first time last year and are delighted they chose to once again sponsor our wonderful three days of racing.
I’d also like to thank the team at Ayr Racecourse for their unstinted efforts to ensure this year’s Festival has gone as smoothly as possible. In particular the Grounds team have produced a track in stunning condition.
Scotland’s only Group race, the Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Stakes is run immediately before the Gold Cup and features twelve leading two-year-olds with several Newmarket based trainers sending horses north in search of a Group victory
Thistle Cabs are well known in the area as one of our leading taxi companies and have also sponsored many races over the years. The Get Home Safe With Thistle Cabs Handicap is run at 4.45pm.
Finally I thank you for your support and hope you enjoy this very special day’s racing and entertainment.
Welcome to Scotland’s biggest, richest and most prestigious day of the Flat season with eight quality races headlined by the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup.
David Brown Managing Director Ayr Racecourse

WELCOME TO AYR
As we again pay our respects to Her Majesty The Queen it is worth remembering it is two years ago today that Her Majesty had her last ever runner at Ayr, when King’s Lynn ran in the Silver Cup.
SPONSORS

The Ayr Executive would like to thank today’s sponsors for their very generous support. We wish them and their guests an enjoyable afternoon with us.

David has had many runners here at Ayr and enjoys a fair number of winners. His previous successes include Louis The Pious in the Ayr Gold Cup in 2014. He has a strong hand in that race this afternoon and could well have a second win in the contest. David teams up with regular jockey Danny Tudhope in several of this afternoon’s races and they could be a combination to follow

Tim has been one of the most successful trainers at this meeting over the years winning most of our feature races. He has a strong hand in today’s Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup with Snash, Hyperfocus and Ava Go Joe. He also has several other runners throughout the afternoon who would have strong chances too, including Vince Le Prince in the Remus Uomo Nursery Handicap.

Kevin recorded his fifth winner of the Ayr Gold Cup when Bielsa romped home with Kevin Stott producing a superb tactical ride. That success followed those of Advanced (2007), Our Jonathan (2011), Captain Ramius (2012) and Brando (2016). Can he make it six winners this afternoon? We will have to wait and see but throughout the day Kevin will have runners in most of the big races and will be hoping to be among the winners.

What a popular result it would be if Irvine born Danny could ride the winner of this afternoon’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup, and he must have a great chance of doing so on the David O’Meara trained Summerghand. He is enjoying another excellent year closing in on the 100 winner mark and he could have two or three winners today
Kevin’s ride on Bielsa to win last year’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup will long be remembered as he showed superb tactical nous to keep his mount to the stand side rail from stall 25 and plough a lone furrow which saw him cross the line two and a quarter lengths clear of Great Ambassador with the width of the track separating them. Kevin has several tasty looking mounts today and will be hoping for another memorable afternoon.

2021 – BIELSA
THIS DAY IN
The final day of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival is Scotland’s richest day of racing on the flat and has produced some memorable winners.

It takes a class horse to win the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup and so it proved last year when Kevin Ryan’s Bielsa raced solo on the stand side’s rail and came home two and a quarter lengths clear of Great Ambassador under an enterprising ride from Kevin Stott. This was a most impressive performance that gave trainer Kevin Ryan his fifth winner of the race.
Not many three-year-olds win the Ayr Gold Cup but for a horse of that age to win the race on only his fifth start was quite outstanding. The Richard Fahey trained Don’t Touch was given a top ride from Tony Hamilton and hit the front over a furlong out and stayed on gamely to win by half a length from Poyle Vinnie. This was the horse’s fifth straight win.
2021 – MAYDANNY
In 2020 Addeybb became the highest rated horse ever to run at Ayr when the William Haggas Group 1 winner lined up in the Doonside Cup, Listed race. His BHA mark at that point was 122 and he justified 11-10 favouritism by hitting the front inside the final furlong and winning rather cosily from fellow Group 1 winner Lord Glitters.
2015 – DON’T TOUCH
2012 JACK DEXTER
The Shadwell owned horse came to the Doonside Cup Listed race on the back of a win in a valuable handicap at Goodwood and made a seamless transition to Listed class going clear a furlong out and winning by a length and a half from the highly rated Euchen Glen. This was a very strong renewal of what is one of the top Listed contests in the country
Jack Dexter was one of the finest horses ever to be trained in Scotland and won the Ayr Bronze Cup with ease as a three year old under Graham Lee. He went on to win more than £430,000 in prizemoney and won the Group 3 Chipcase Stakes at Newcastle.
Maydanny going clear in the final furlong to win last year’s Doonside Cup.
Here are five outstanding horses who won on this day.

Our opener today is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

Jockey: Joe Fanning
This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 8st 12lb for 3-y-o colts and geldings and 8st 7lb for fillies the same age, with 9st 3lb for 4-y-o+ colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2 win.

Everyone here at Ayr Racecourse and Western House Hotel wishes you a long and happy retirement.
With an almost encyclopedic knowledge of racing in general and Ayr in particular, Fergie, you’re one of a kind and will be sorely missed.
A seasoned journalist, Fergie started his career as the Editor of the Troon & Prestwick Times and latterly was the Assistant Editor of the Daily Record and the Sunday Mail. Referring to his time at the racecourse as his second career, he talks of the terrific memories that he will take with him. He has undoubtedly been central to our success story over the years and very much the face and voice of Ayr Racecourse. Hugely popular with owners, trainers and jockeys alike, everyone is united in their opinion that he’s simply a true gent.
Have a blast and go on and write that book that you’ve always promised yourself! x
Iain Ferguson steps down today as the Head of PR for Ayr Racecourse after 19 years. Fergie, as he is widely known, retires today and there’s no more fitting a fixture than his 20th Ayr Gold Cup.

Summary: Tim Easterby enjoys plundering the big races at the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and this was a gutsy performance from a horse sent off at 25/1. Racing on the far side, Staxton was pushed along when the two groups merged over 2f out and sent second 1f out before getting up in the last 110 yards to win by a neck from Soldier’s Minute.
After every race the official handicapper reviews all performances and alters the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below-par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horse’s rating increase significantly However, if a recent winner runs again soon after its win, there will not be time to reassess their performance, so they will be allotted a mandatory 6lb penalty This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards and will be run over six furlongs a consolation race for those who just missed out on the Gold Cup later on today

TODAY’S TIPS A fiendishly difficult puzzle to solve as always but it can pay to side with the improving SNASH, whose stable needs no introduction when it comes to this contest. The son of Markaz didn’t do himself justice when slowly away in the Great St Wilfrid, and he is better judged on a comfortable success over C&D in July Behind him on that occasion were Aberama Gold (second) and Bernardo O’Reilly (third), who remain difficult to win with but could get involved. Lovely Breeze has a 5lb penalty to overcome for a convincing victory at Goodwood, while Emperor Spirit and Hyperfocus are others who arrive in great shape.

LEADING TRAINERS?
WHEN WAS THE RACE FIRST RUN?
Bielsa’s success last year gave trainer Kevin Ryan his fifth winner of the Ayr Gold Cup. His previous successes came with Brando (2016), Captain Ramius (2012), Our Jonathan (2011) and Advanced (2007). The winningmost trainer of the race is the late Dandy Nicholls with six wins.

Since 1980 five jockeys have won the race twice John Lowe Sparkling Boy (1980), Final Shot (1990); Jimmy Fortune Joveworth (1989),Coastal Bluff (1996);Daryll Holland Royal Figurine (1995), Continent (2001); Adrian Nicholls Bahmaian Pirate (2000), Funfair Wane (2002); Frankie Dettori Jimmy Styles (2009), Redford (2010).

The Ayr Gold Cup was first run on the original Ayr Racecourse on the south side of Ayr in 1804 and restricted to horses trained in Scotland. It was won by Chancellor, who also won the race the following year The race was run over two miles in these days.

THE VIRGIN BET AYR GOLD CUP
LEADING JOCKEYS?

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER ON THE CURRENT COURSE?
In 1907 the Ayr Gold Cup was run over the new course and over a new distance of six furlongs. The reason for the change in distance was that the Duke of Montrose wanted his horse Raeberry to have a better chance of winning the race. The Duke’s plans were scuppered when Charis won the race.
Chancellor won the race, in both 1804 and 1805 and there is a restaurant on the racecourse named after him as there is Roman Warrior, winner of the race in 1975 And the Be Friendly Bae is named after the horse of the same name, winner of the Gold Cup in 1967 and owned by the late Sir Peter O’Sullevan.
The Ayr Gold Cup has built in stature over the years and it now takes a very highly rated horse to win. In 2016 Brando, with a BHA rating of 110, became the highest rated horse to win the race. In 2019 dead heaters Baron Bolt and Son Of Rest were both rated 101, Nahaarr in 2020 had a rating of 100 and last year’s winner Bielsa ran off 98 In 2000 Bahamian Pirate win the race off 86 which shows just how far the race has come.
Virgin Bet was launched in 2019 and is one of the UK’s fastest growing sportsbooks. This is the second year of sponsoring the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and nine of the races, including the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold, Silver and Bronze Cups.
Since 1980 only four favourites have won. These are Coastal Bluff in 1996 at 3-1, Don’t Touch in 2015 at 6-1, Son Of Rest, who was co-favourite at 5-1 when dead heating with Baron Bolt in 2019 and Nahaarr in 2020 who was sent off at 7-2.

RACE DESCRIPTION
FIFTH RACE 3.40
This afternoon’s feature race is an historic six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.
TODAY’S TIPS
Age/Weight: 6-9-1
A case can be made for many in this competitive contest, but POPMASTER gets the vote having finished a far from disgraced fourth at Ascot earlier this month. He was a beaten favourite on that occasion, but he showed promise when running on for second in a competitive handicap at the Royal Meeting there in June and can get his head in front this time. Vadream drops markedly in grade and is feared most ahead of last year’s winner Bielsa Mr Wagyu and Motagally also merit consideration.
Jockeys: Kevin Stott
Summary: Kevin Stott elected to plough a lone furrow down the stand side rail on Bielsa and it was obvious over a furlong out he was well clear, he kept on strongly all the way to the line to win by two and a quarter lengths from Great Ambassador who raced on the far side.

Summary: Trainer John Quinn has a great record at the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and he continued that by saddling Titan Rock to comfortably win what looked on paper at least, a tricky handicap. Jason Hart settled his horse in midfield and rode him with perfection inside the last furlong to win by a length and a half

The penultimate race of the afternoon is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61-80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS
TODAY’S TIPS WOR WILLIE has impressively notched a 1m4f double at Pontefract and, proven over further than this trip as well, he looks versatile and might be able to round off the hat-trick. Molinari has been in cracking form at a lower level and looks sure to be in the shake-up once again, despite the rise in class. Fairmac is another consistent sort and he likes it here, while Polyphonic and El Picador are just two more with claims in a competitive finale.

MOBILE TELEPHONES & RADIOS

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys.
USE OF SCREENS
At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

All Attendees (which for the purposes of this clause also includes horses and for the avoidance of any doubt includes families with children) are reminded that many races and fixtures are given coverage on television, radio and in print and various other forms of media. By entering the Racecourse Attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage which may also include printed or electronic material used for the promotion of the Racecourse.
SMOKING
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflecton the severity of an injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity in a calm environment, in which to make a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse!
Accordingly, Attendees shall have no right to object to their inclusion in any much coverage whether produced by the Racecourse or by third parties authorised by the Racecourse. Furthermore by entering the Racecourse each Attendee consents to the passing of still or moving images of them to third parties authorised by the Racecourse for the purposes of the production of printed or electronic material to be used solely for the Promotion of the Racecourse.
Each Attendee will give any additional consents or waivers required for the unrestricted lawful use of any coverage (if any) without request for payment or imposing any other conditions.
