HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1926 2022 The Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Ladies Day Friday 16th September

Her Majesty’s last winner at Ayr was PIQUANT in the Shaw Memorial Handicap in September 1990 and her final runner here was KING’S LYNN in the Ayr Silver Cup in September 2020.
Everyone at Ayr Racecourse is deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen, and we join the whole country in extending our condolences to His Majesty The King and the other members of the Royal Family.
Her Majesty had a life-long passion for horseracing, and it has been Ayr’s great privilege to have witnessed her horses racing and winning here.
HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1926-2022
There will be a minute’s silence held at approximately 1.10pm today in tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

WELCOME to our Virgin Bet Ladies Day which features some high class racing plus the Style Awards with fabulous prizes on offer.
Once again, we race today with a tinge of sadness following the death of Her Majesty The Queen and our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad time.
The three principal races today are the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup, the British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes, Listed Race, and the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies Stakes, Listed Race.
The Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes was only introduced in 2018 and has quickly established itself as one of the leading races at the Festival. This year’s contest has attracted a quality field of 18 runners and should be a terrific spectacle.
I must give a special mention to today’s sponsors without whose support, we wouldn’t be able to stage such high-quality racing. To Virgin Bet, the European Breeders Fund, Rems Group and Tennent’s a big thank you.
WELCOME TO AYR
Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns with some fabulous prizes on offer and I’d like to thank all the companies who sponsor these awards.
The Bronze Cup has a maximum field of 25 horses all vying to win the first of our three sprint cups this week. There are some real speed merchants in the field and we should see another exciting renewal of the race which was first introduced in 2009 and gives us a taste of what to expect in the Virgin Bet Gold and Silver Cups tomorrow
Days like this take a lot of planning and I’d like to extend my thanks to the team at Ayr Racecourse for ensuring everything runs smoothly
David Brown Managing Director Ayr Racecourse

I hope that you all enjoy an exciting afternoon of racing, style awards and entertainment.
The British Stallions EBF Harry Rosebery Stakes invariably produces a worthy winner with the brilliant Quiet Reflection in 2015 just one example of that. Today’s field again features some talented young horses from leading stables and an exciting race is in prospect.

No Ayr Gold Cup Festival would be complete without runners from the Michael Dods yard on all three days and he runs Commanche Falls in tomorrow’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup. This afternoon he runs the in-form Gale Force Maya in the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies Stakes, Listed Race which he won back in 2018 with Intense Romance. Another interesting runner from the yard is Prairie Falcon in the EBF Nursery Handicap at 2.00pm.

2018 – INTENSE ROMANCE
VIRGIN Bet Ladies Day features some quality races which have over the years produced some worthy winners.
Jim Goldie’s progressive sprinter was winning his third race on the bounce in the ultra-competitive Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup. Sent off the 4-1 favourite, Paul Mulrennan settled his mount in the rear and gradually worked his way into the race and pouncing deep inside the final to win comfortably by half a length from his stablemate Be Proud.
Owned by Cheveley Park Stud and trained by Richard Fahey, Exceptional came into the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies Sprint, Listed Race on the back of a disappointing run at Pontefract. But on softer ground she turned that form around and gave Paul Hanagan his 100th Ayr win. This was a class performance.
2018 marked the first running of the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes and 15 runners lined up for this contest over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs. Intense Romance was always up with the pace and led from halfway under Callum Rodriguez. She showed her tenacity close to home by running all the way to the line to fend off the sustained challenge of Mayleaf Shine and win by a short head.
THIS DAY IN
Here we pick out four horses who brightened up this day in years gone by.
Mike Smith’s great reputation as a trainer who can turn bargain buys into top horses was further enhanced when the filly Sophie P won the mile handicap on Ladies Day at the Gold Cup Festival back in 2016 Sophie P cost connections £3,500 and this was her first career win. She then went on to land three more successes before being sold for 160,000 guineas to race in America where she won a Grade 1. After her racing career ended she was covered by Frankel and produced a foal The Parent who won at Goodwood last month.

TODAY’S TIPS BOLT ACTION can count himself slightly unfortunate to have bumped into some smart rivals in recent starts, with a four-length defeat at the hands of Little Big Bear the pick of those. However he’s still improving and, if taking another step forward, he could gain a deserved success at this level. Kerindia has been competing in a higher grade and she with her sights lowered. Looking For Lynda and New both are capable of being involved, along with Prince who in the Flying Childers last weekend.

THIRD RACE 2.35
Listed races are high-class and only bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this five-furlong contest for two-year-olds will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially weight is allocated according to sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 3lb for a Listed success to 5lb for a Pattern race victory

FIFTH RACE 3.45
TODAY’S TIPS In a typically wide-open renewal of this contest, the tentative vote goes to previous C&D winner BELTANE Keith Dalglish’s three-year-old lost a race in the stewards’ room here in July on his second start following wind surgery, but that solidified his liking for the track and the lightly-raced gelding could have more to offer Music Society won this in 2019 and looks more than capable of another bold bid along with Admirality, who has similarly gone well at this meeting in the past. Monsieur Kodi has been in good form this season and would have a chance if putting a below-par effort at Windsor behind him, while Beattie Is Back and Grantley Hall are others to consider
This race is a six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

TEMPER TRAP has won on four occasions in recent months and the five-year-old is expected to bounce back from his latest performance in the Leger Legends race at Doncaster. Flylikeaneagle has been a model of consistency since joining Lucinda Russell and another bold bid is likely, with the drop back in trip no issue for him. Ayr Poet, a winner at Hamilton on his latest start, is capable of a decent showing, along with Do I Dream.

BETTING
Last year’s winner ECLIPSE DE LUNAR returns off a 10lb lower mark and having produced a solid effort at Wolverhampton last month, he looks set to mount a bold bid in first-time blinkers. The ultra-consistent Gift Of Raaj must have a good chance despite the burden of top weight, but the main danger to the selection is Mister Camacho, who has been knocking hard on the door in recent outings.
