Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.

If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

n June 2nd, 1953 Ayr Racecourse staged the opening day of the Ayr Coronation Meeting.

Just a few hours earlier in Westminster Abbey Queen Elizabeth II was crowned some 16 months after she succeeded to the Throne following the death of her father King George V1.

There were six races on the card and some of today’s races are named after the race titles that afternoon.

A huge total of 112 horses lined up with the opening contest, the Braemar Selling Plate attracting 19 runners. The biggest field of the day was in the Holyrood Plate over a mile where a field of 24 took part.

The feature race was the Ayr Coronation Cup with prize-money of 1,000 sovereigns and was won by Paragonaria.

Some of the top jockeys of the day were riding including LC Parkes, renowned as a leading lightweight rider and who rode Dawn Watch (1960) and Brief Star (1969) to win the Ayr Gold Cup. Also in action was Norman McIntosh, a native of Buckie in Banffshire, who listed his 1966 Ayr Gold cup success on Milesius as his greatest ever win.

A third Ayr Gold Cup winning jockey who rode at the Coronation Meeting was Joe Sime who partnered Whistling Victor to win the 1959 running of the race.

Trainers who saddled horses that day in 1953 included Richard Peacock, George Boyd, Captain Bill Elsey and Snowy Gray.

TREE PLANTING

AYR RACECOURSE PARTICIPATES IN QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY INITIATIVE Ayr Racecourse is marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by participating in a nationwide project to plant trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.

Several trees have been planted in and around the grounds of the course and Western House Hotel.

The Queen’s Green Canopy was launched last May and its aim is to create a national legacy in honour of the Queen’s monarchy over 70 years.

Ayr is one of many British racecourses to take part in the initiative and commemorative plaques have been placed beside the trees.

Ayr Racecourse and Western House Hotel Managing Director David Brown said : “Both the racecourse and hotel were keen to mark this landmark occasion and the Queen’s Green Canopy gives us the perfect opportunity to do so.

“This project promotes planting sustainably and also creates a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation.”

Racecourse Head Gardener Simon McKay supervised the planting of the trees which included ornamental pear trees and cherry trees.

CABALLERO was hugely consistent towards the back end of last year and, given he has finished runner-up in each of his last four outings, he could go very close if picking up from where he left off on his return. He was only half a length behind Temper Trap on his last outing over this course and distance and seems to be a strong contender. The form of that race may not have worked out since but he still gets the vote ahead of Red Force One, who boasts every chance if turning up here following his second at Catterick on Saturday.

HORSE CARE AT AYR At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race.

MEDIA COVERAGE & RECORDING FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES All Attendees (which for the purposes of this clause also includes horses and for the avoidance of any doubt includes families with children) are reminded that many races and fixtures are given coverage on television, radio and in print and various other forms of media. By entering the Racecourse Attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage which may also include printed or electronic material used for the promotion of the Racecourse.

Accordingly, Attendees shall have no right to object to their inclusion in any much coverage whether produced by the Racecourse or by third parties authorised by the Racecourse.
