Iain is a trainer with an excellent record at this track and regularly sends his horses on the trip from his Carrutherstown base near Dumfries to plunder our races. He likes to have his horses primed for big runs early in the season and comes here tonight with hopes of more success at a track where he saddled an impressive 14 winners in 2021. His runners include course and distance winner Rose Bandit in the five furlong handicap at 8.00pm.
Paul has been at the forefront of northern Flat jockeys for a few years now and has built up a great relationship with a number of trainers including Michael Dods and Jim Goldie. His exploits on some of Jim’s older horses like Euchen Glen and Sir Chauvelin are legendary. He is one of the best judges of pace in the weighing room and has a good book of rides this evening.

CLANSMAN was shock 50/1 winner on his first start for Liam Bailey at Redcar and there appeared to be no fluke about his win. It was his first start since being gelded and perhaps a mixture of that and his new surroundings looks to have rejuvenated him. Al Qaasim is respected having been in fine form so far this year, winning twice at Southwell and last time at Pontefract. Seven For A Pound hasn’t been seen since winning at Ripon in August but is worth a market check.

BREAKING LIGHT displayed plenty of promise when finishing a close second on her racecourse debut over course and distance last August and Karl Burke’s filly could be hard to beat with the benefit of that experience. Espressoo put in a career best on her final start as a juvenile and she is an obvious threat to the selection. Smiling Jayne is another with valid form claims, while Matti and Brazilian Beach should also be noted.

Rose Bandit may be a warm order at the top of the market following her recent success at Musselburgh, where RORY finished in behind. However, given the latter had to concede race fitness that day, it may be wise to opt for Jim Goldie’s gelding instead. Paul Mulrennan has been aboard for both career victories and returns to the saddle, which could be a further indicator of his chances. Spanish Angel performed with great credit at Catterick and he is not without a chance if he can build on that effort.

CHOOKIE DUNEDIN is arguably unlucky not to be coming into this on the back of a three-timer having just been touched off at Catterick earlier in the month. The Keith Dalgleish-trained sevenyear-old had previously scored at Southwell and Wolverhampton in March and a return to turf last time didn’t appear to be an inconvenience. Taskheer was third at Musselburgh 10 days ago and still looks relatively unexposed. Merricourt looked booked for the places last time until tiring late on, a drop to this trip may suit.
