LEADERBOARDS BRIAN Hughes and Nick Alexander look certain to clinch the top jockey and top trainer awards at Ayr for the 2021-2022 jumps season as we go into today’s last meeting of the season. We still have a jumps fixture to come on Tuesday May 3 but that falls into the 2022-2023 season so after this afternoon’s results we will know who our champions are. Brian, who rode Autumn Return to win the Golf Inn Prestwick National Hunt Flat Race on Coral Scottish Grand National Day, leads Sean Quinlan by 15 points in the jockeys table with Conor O’Farrell in third. Nick was also on target at the Scottish National Festival with Dubai Days landing the Seko Logistics Limited Handicap Chase on Friday and that result put him 16 points to the good over Lucinda Russell in the Trainers’ Championship with Nicky Richards inb third. Suzie and Mark Russell remain top of the Owners Championship by a point from Mr and Mrs Duncan Davidson and Willie Young.

FORM RATINGS Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by, weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc. Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

TREE PLANTING
AYR RACECOURSE PARTICIPATES IN QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY INITIATIVE Ayr Racecourse is marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by participating in a nationwide project to plant trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. Several trees have been planted in and around the grounds of the course and Western House Hotel. The Queen’s Green Canopy was launched last May and its aim is to create a national legacy in honour of the Queen’s monarchy over 70 years. Ayr is one of many British racecourses to take part in the initiative and commemorative plaques have been placed beside the trees. Ayr Racecourse and Western House Hotel Managing Director David Brown said : “Both the racecourse and hotel were keen to mark this landmark occasion and the Queen’s Green Canopy gives us the perfect opportunity to do so. “This project promotes planting sustainably and also creates a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the nation.” Racecourse Head Gardener Simon McKay supervised the planting of the trees which included ornamental pear trees and cherry trees. Western House Hotel General Manager Zac Warr and Catherine Stewart pictured with one of the trees at Western House and Simon McKay and the grounds team with one of the Racecourse trees.

AILIE ROSE scored over 2m4f here earlier in the year and the daughter of Fame And Glory is clearly the one to beat having placed in a Grade 3 at Limerick when last seen. Hasty Brook won over 2m in Ireland before putting in a promising display on his stable debut here a month ago and he may give the selection plenty to think about. Perfect Arch is hard to recommend based on all known form.

A few have questions to answer in this race and the Irish raider Mourne Lass is more appealing than most, having run creditably when second at Carlisle on her latest start. In the hands of Brian Hughes, the daughter of Kalanisi should go well but it may prove best focusing on TFOU, who was sent off second favourite on his hurdling debut at Newcastle last month and looks capable of progressing. Hogan finished behind the useful Lac De Constance when fifth on his first racecourse start at Warwick and cannot be discounted either.

Houston Texas is looking for his hat-trick after wins at Carlisle, but an added 5lb from the handicapper may stop his winning run despite the drop in class. DONNA’S DELIGHT saves his best for this course with three of his four career victories coming here, one of which was over C&D in January 2020. Narrowly beaten here last month, he may make his course expertise tell. The rapidlyimproving Destiny Is All is another to consider.

HIDDEN COMMANDER got off the mark under Rules in impressive fashion when scoring by 20 lengths over 2m5f at Kelso last month. That performance suggests that he will be very hard to beat this afternoon, despite carrying a 7lb penalty. Monsieur Co has made the frame on his last three starts and he should be thereabouts once again, while Upandatit and Ardera Cross are others to note.
Win: Hidden Commander

Miss Bamby is the only runner with recent winning form to her name in this event, having got off the mark at Hereford last October, and should make a bold bid. However, the unexposed RACKS CROSS showed much more after attracting market support at this track last time and, on just her second run in a handicap, may prove the best option. On We Go registered her sole win over C&D and is another to note on her first run for a new yard.

Askgarmor is beginning to look well handicapped despite remaining a maiden over hurdles and he could go close at a track he does well at, but SHOESHINE BOY could have his measure. Second on his last four starts including a short-head defeat over C&D last month, he may finally get off the mark with some luck in running. Your Place has a similar profile and is another to consider with his jockey claiming a useful 10lb in the saddle.
