Welcome to Ladies Day, the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival , the biggest and richest jumps fixture in Scotland which features some outstanding National Hunt racing.

It’s a joy to welcome crowds back after losing the Festival in 2020 and having to race behind closed doors in 2021.

This afternoon we stage the first of five Class 1 races over the two days – the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase, Listed Race.

Hillhouse Quarry have sponsored at this meeting for 29 years and are our longest running sponsor. Their loyalty down the years is greatly appreciated by everyone at Ayr Racecourse and I thank the Vernon Family for their generosity and support.

The race is established as one of the outstanding middle distance chases of the season in the north and we have witnessed some terrific renewals in the past and I am sure today’s contest will be another to savour.

I’d also like to say a big thank you to this afternoon’s other sponsors beginning with Coral who have been synonymous with this Festival since 2007. The Coral Mares’ Handicap Hurdle is a Class 2 contest, and a contest that is always a competitive race and has attracted a good field with some leading trainers represented.

It’s always good to see Davy Russell in action here at Ayr and he teams up with Gordon Elliott this afternoon on Irish Blaze in the Quiz Clothing Novices’ Hurdle and Coach Cater in the feature, the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase, Listed Race. Davy rode Two Taffs to win the Hillhouse back in 2017 and will be hoping for another victory today.

Brian is having an unforgettable season and approaching the milestone of 200 winners and it would be great to see him achieve that this weekend. He has been leading jockey at Ayr for a number of years and has a really strong book of rides this weekend with mounts in both the Coral Scottish Grand National and the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle. His association with Donald McCain has kicked in big time this season and should prove fruitful again this weekend.

BRYONY FROST

It’s hard to believe it was only four years ago this month that Danny rode his first winner on his first ever ride here at Ayr on Western Rules in a National Hunt Flat race. Since then he has established himself as one of the top young jockeys not only in the north but in the UK and has some interesting bookings this weekend. He is on board Nietzsche, who won the arce last year, in this afternoon’s HIllhouse Quarry Handicap Chase.

Bryony makes her first visit to Ayr this afternoon and her first ever ride comes in today’s feature the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase on Flic Ou Voyou for Paul Nicholls Her record in big races in Britain is outstanding and Bryony will be in with a good chance of adding to that today. She also rides Skatman in the Thistle Cabs Handicap Hurdle and has a good book of rides tomorrow.

DEREK FOX

Ryan took a five year break from the saddle before returning in October 2019. He has enjoyed a great number of successes since particularly for Sandy Thomson and Sue Smith. He has a good book of rides this weekend and would dearly love to add the Coral Scottish Grand National to the Grand National he won back in 2013 on Aurora Encore. He came close last year on Dingo Dollar who was second to Mighty Thunder.

Derek is enjoying a terrific season and capped it with a superb ride on board Corach Rambler in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham. A fantastic horseman who always gets the best out of his mounts he is partnering a couple of horses for Lucinda Russell this afternoon – Thereisnodoubt in the Remus Uomo Handicap Hurdle and Your Own Story in the Thistle Cabs Group Handicap Hurdle.

SEAN QUINLAN

Harry has a superb record at this meeting and continued in that vein last year when partnering three winners with the highlight coming on Allmankind in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Chase.

Harry will again be riding the pick of his brother Dan’s runners this week and these include Ashtown Lad in the Coral Scottish Grand National and West Cork in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle.

Sean’s partnership with the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National winner Takingrisks boosted his career and he hasn’t looked back since and has topped the 70 winner mark for the first time this season. He will have rides this weekend for a number of top trainers including Nicky Richards, Brian Ellison and Nick Alexander.

LUCINDA RUSSELL

DAN SKELTON

A lady who has a knack of saddling big race winners and continued that pattern with Mighty Thunder in last year’s Coral Scottish Grand National Festival.

Lucinda will have at least one runner in the race this year and will have many horses in action over the two days including some good young talent. Her horses are in great form as was shown a couple of week ago at Cheltenham when she saddled Corach Rambler to win the Ultima Chase and had a gallant second in the Brown Advisory with Ahoy Senor.

Since taking out his trainer’s licence in 2013 Dan has trained over 1,000 winners including a few at this meeting. He is currently third in the trainers’ championship behind his old boss Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson. Dan has a particularly good record in the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase, a race he has won three times with Two Taffs (2017), Value At Risk (2018) and Born Survivor (2019). He comes here this week with a strong squad of horses and will have runners on both days.

NICKY HENDERSON

Many years ago Alan was assistant trainer to John Wilson at Cree Lodge and over the years has enjoyed some big wins at this Festival with Godsmejudge winning the Coral Scottish Grand National in 2013 and Raya Star capturing the Scottish Champion Hurdle in 2012. He has entries in both these feature races this weekend and will be hoping for more success.

The master of Seven Barrows always sends a strong team north for the Coral Scottish Grand Ntaional Festival and this year is no exception. Last year he saddled Theinval to win The Scotty Brand Chase, Listed Race, for the second time and he could have a runner in that contest again. The Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle is another race in which he has a good record having won it with Verdana Blue in 2019 and he will be hoping for a repeat this year.

NICKY RICHARDS

OLLY MURPHY

Nicky has a great record at Ayr down the years and has enjoyed a fair degree of success at this Festival too. The most recent was with saddled Takingrisks in the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National and other notable wins include the Jordan Electrics Ltd Future champion Chase with Monet’s Garden in 2006 and Eduard (2014) plus Noble Alan in the Scottish Champion Hurdle in 2009. He has high hopes of winning that race again this year with his novice Nells Son.

Olly has been in excellent form since joining the trainers’ ranks in 2017 and has a particularly good strike rate here of 21 per cent. This could be a big weekend for Olly as he runs The Wolf in the Coral Scottish Grand National. He has a few other runners over the two days and will be hoping he keeps up his good form at the track.

PAUL NICHOLLS

NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES

Another trainer who has an outstanding record at this fixture and who will be hoping that continues this week. He has saddled three winners of the Coral Scottish Grand National – Belmont King in 1997 and Vicente in 2016 and 2017. He will have runners in the big race again this year and also has a strong hand in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle. A loyal supporter of the Festival he should enjoy another few successes over the next couple of days.

Nigel, like Paul Nicholls, has trained three winners of the Coral Scottish Grand National with Hello Bud (2009), Earth Summit (1994) and Captain Dibble (1992). He will be hoping for win number four this afternoon when he runs Bristol de Mai. In addition he has other entries dotted amongst the 15 races and could have a successfulk couple of days.

BRIAN, RYAN AND SEAN LOCKED IN BATTLE SEVERAL riders go into the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival this week with a chance of being top jockey for the 2020-2021 season at Ayr. Brian Hughes leads the way by two points from Ryan Mania. Sean Quinlan is a further point away in third spot with Derek Fox and Conor O’Farrell also in contention.

All five will be in action this weekend so it really is all to play for and of course we also have the leading protagonists for the British Jump Jockeys title with Brian Hughes, Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden all with mounts.

The Ayr Trainers Championship is also a tight affair with long-time leader Nick Alexander on 33 points, only a point to the good over Lucinda Russell, with Sandy Thomson five points further away in third and Nicky Richards on 26 points in fourth.

In the Owners Championship Trevor Hemmings is in pole position four points clear of Mr and Mrs Duncan Davidson. Trevor has several runners this week including Vintage clouds in the Coral Scottish Grand National.

IN MEMORY OF TO M M Y M O RTO N

TOMMY MORTON 10 SEPTEMBER 1931 – 12 MARCH 2022 One of the true characters of the Betting Ring Tommy Morton sadly passed away after taking ill here at the track on March 12.

Tommy, aged 90, spent 65 years working at Ayr and other Scottish courses and was a really well known face to all racegoers.

Born in Govan, he went to Catterick aged 18 to complete his two years of National Service with the Army. Following that Tommy got a job at Butlins in Ayr as a cook where he met Margaret who was to become his wife.

Tommy opened a grocers shop in Dorset Street in Glasgow and his customers included Billy Connolly and a young Lena Martell later to have a hit with One Day At A Time which was one of Tommy’s favourite songs.

After betting shops became legal in 1961 Tommy opened his first shop in the Finnieston area of Glasgow and soon opened others in Kingston Street, St Vincent Street, Scotland Street, Govan Road and Baillieston. The Govan Road shop is still open today and run by his daughter Elaine.

Right up until his death Tommy loved working, especially at Ayr, and he vowed he would never retire so it was fitting he passed away doing the job he loved at a course he loved and surrounded by close family, colleagues and friends.

He was looking forward to the Coral Scottish Grand National which was the highlight of his year and he loved the camaraderie with bookies and punters alike.

Tommy was predeceased by his wife Margaret and daughter Christine. Our condolences go to his daughter Elaine and sons Billy and John, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His family would like to thank everyone for all the support and kind messages received over the last two weeks.

Tommy will be greatly missed by the team at Ayr Racecourse and by the racing community in general.

This is a three miles handicap hurdle race for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October.

disgraced when last seen in a Grade 3 at Sandown. Olly Murphy’s charge takes a big drop in class here and though this looks competitive, the son of Shirocco can regain the winning thread today. Perhaps the biggest danger is Grey Skies, who has won on his previous three outings and further progress looks likely. Of the Irish raiders, Irish Blaze looks most interesting, for a trainer who does well when bringing his horses over to Scotland. Clondaw Hollow is the eldest in this field but, like a few others, has improved this year. With Kieren Buckley claiming 5lb off his back, he should not be discounted.

Dan Skelton made it three winners in a row in this race when Born Survivor followed Two Taffs (2017) and Value At Risk (2018) in winning this prestigious contest which is the feature race on the Friday at the Coral Grand National Festival.

The eight year-old gave a fine display of jumping under Harry Skelton and led before four out and was left clear two out, to win convincingly by seven lengths from Sizing Granite who had Robbie Power in the plate.

Trainer Dan Skelton secured back to back wins in the feature race of the opening day of the Coral Scottish Grand National Festival, when Value At Risk won the 2018 running under a positive Harry Skelton ride.

The nine year-old travelled well throughout and piled it on in the home straight winning by a length from Sizing Platinum.

Value At Risk lines up in the race again this afternoon.

NIETZSCHE OWNER: D GILBERT, M LAWRENCE, A BRUCE & G WILLS TRAINER: BRIAN ELLISON JOCKEY: JONATHAN BURKE Dan Skelton came into this race trying to make it four wins in a row having won previously with Two Taffs (2017), Value At Risk (2018) and Born Survivor (2019). He saddled the 15/8 favourite Not That Fuisse but in a thrilling finish he went down by a neck to Brian Ellison’s game Nietzsche.

The eight year-old made some progress in the home straight but fiddled the third last and was then pushed along and was three lengths down in fourth place jumping the last but kept on gamely to lead inside the final half furlong and hold off the favourite.

A maiden over hurdles coming into this race, Two Taffs built on his third in a novice handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival and scored in fine style given a confident ride by Davy Russell.

A winner at the meeting in a hurdles contest the year before. the Dan Skelton -trained horse was driven out to win by three lengths.

It was a fine performance from the seven year-old who was enthusiastically greeted by his owners in the winners enclosure.

TRAINER Brian Ellison had previously won this race with Bocciani in 2013 and was dropping Definitly Red significantly in trip after he had fallen in a four miler at Cheltenham.

Well supported in the market for his first time in a handicap chase and sent off the 7-4 favourite, he had a battle on his hands with the Paul Nicholls trained Orbasa who actually took the lead at the last but Definitly Red showed huge heart in running on all the way to the line to win by a length under a forceful ride from Danny Cook.

THE HILLHOUSE QUARRY HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 1) (Listed Race) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles, about four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards and because of its quality, the race has been awarded Listed status. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part.

Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive.

In an open race the marginal preference is for BEAKSTOWN, who travelled well for a long way when failing to stay 3m at Kempton last time. That followed an encouraging second over 2m4f at Cheltenham in January and a reproduction of that level of form today would give him a big chance. The recent Carlisle winner Whoshotthesheriff is an obvious threat to the selection, while Flic Ou Voyou and Presentandcounting also merit places on the shortlist.

THE CORAL MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This three miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

THE SEKO LOGISTICS SCOTLAND NOVICES’ LIMITED HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for novice five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 7lb in this race, as is usually the case.

Club Enclosure – The club enclosure operates a smart/casual dress code.

We cannot accept trainers, non-tailored shorts, vests, football and rugby shirts.

Smart jeans are acceptable.

Grandstand – informal and casual dress but no vest tops of football or rugby colours.

FIRST AID The Ayr Executive take this opportunity to thank the St. AndrewsAmbulance Association for their help throughout the season. The First Aid Point can be found behind the main Grandstand.

FOOD & DRINK Food and drink must NOT be brought into the Racecourse. Glasses and bottles must not be taken outside Bars or designated enclosures.

CCTV Closed Circuit Televisions are provided in all bars. These show live racing from Ayr, followed by replays after each race.

They also show action from other tracks racing today covered by SIS. Replays of the first 5 races from Ayr will be shown after the fifth race.

HORSE CARE AT AYR At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race.

MEDIA COVERAGE & RECORDING FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES All Attendees (which for the purposes of this clause also includes horses and for the avoidance of any doubt includes families with children) are reminded that many races and fixtures are given coverage on television, radio and in print and various other forms of media. By entering the Racecourse Attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage which may also include printed or electronic material used for the promotion of the Racecourse.

Accordingly, Attendees shall have no right to object to their inclusion in any much coverage whether produced by the Racecourse or by third parties authorised by the Racecourse. Furthermore by entering the Racecourse each Attendee consents to the passing of still or moving images of them to third parties authorised by the Racecourse for the purposes of the production of printed or electronic material to be used solely for the Promotion of the Racecourse.

Each Attendee will give any additional consents or waivers required for the unrestricted lawful use of any coverage (if any) without request for payment or imposing any other conditions.

MOBILE TELEPHONES & RADIOS The use of mobile telephones is not permitted except by permission of the Clerk of the Course. Bookmakers who have paid the appropriate fee may also use mobile telephones. In addition the use of any transmitting or receiving device, other than the official racecourse, Tote or Police service is prohibited.

SMOKING Ayr Racecourse adheres to the government’s National No Smoking Policy. All indoor areas are No Smoking Zones. Those wishing to smoke may do so in the designated areas outside.

USE OF SCREENS It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflecton the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity in a calm environment, in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse!
