C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E

Welcome to the second day of the Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Racing Weekend.

The Flat season is now fully up to speed, and we have already seen plenty of potential stars out on the track both here and elsewhere. Royal Ascot Trials Day, presented by Eventmasters, saw Big Mojo, Sardinian Warrior and Wise Approach all announce their credentials ahead of the Royal Meeting. The 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket looked to be high-class renewals and we look forward to seeing the protagonists clash with the winners of the Irish and French equivalent races at Royal Ascot.

Today is our last raceday before the Royal Meeting and there is over £275,000 in prize money across the eight-race card. We thank Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% for their sponsorship of the weekend as a whole, as well as five races today. We also extend thanks to race sponsors Carey Group, Mariner Systems, and Schweppes, who join us as an Official Supplier from this year.

Schweppes has a long and memorable history in racing and it is very good to see them sponsor our feature race, the Victoria Cup, which was first run at Hurst Park Racecourse in 1901 and moved to Ascot in 1963. It is always an exciting contest, with no better example of that than last year’s renewal, which was won in thrilling style by The Wizard Of Eye in a three-way head-bobbing finish.

Off the track, we are thrilled to welcome the winners and runners up from this year’s Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition. They will be presented with their prizes at a celebratory tea. The selected entries are available to view on page 12-13 of the racecard and will soon be added to our gallery of previous winners in the Heath Tunnel.

We hope you enjoy the day and look forward to welcoming you back for the Royal Meeting in just over five weeks.

Yours sincerely,

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Novice Stakes

Today’s opener is a five furlong Novice Stakes which is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

PAGES 22-23

2nd Race 2.05pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% British EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

This race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old fillies and upwards. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

PAGES 28-31

3rd Race 2.40pm

The Schweppes Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap)

Our feature race is a seven furlong heritage handicap which has the same conditions as the previous race but is for four-year-olds and upwards. A heritage handicap in more basic terms is a handicap that is worth more than £50,000 and is open to horses rated 0-105. Due to the decent prize money on offer, they are usually highly-competitive and attract many top handicappers from both Britain and Ireland.

PAGES 38-40

4th Race 3.15pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap Stakes

Our fourth race is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for four-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

PAGES 42-43

5th Race 3.50pm

The Carey Group Handicap Stakes

This race is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 69 to 88 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PAGES 48-49

6th Race 4.25pm

The Mariner Systems

Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

The sixth contest is a one mile and two furlong handicap that has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 66 and 85 However, horses officially rated in excess of 85 are also eligible to take part. The conditions of this race stipulate that the maximum weight to be carried by a horse rated 85 would be 10st 2lb, so should a horse rated 87 be entered to run, they would be asked to carry 2lb more than the top weight – 10st 4lb, unless receiving the weight allowance for being a three-year-old.

PAGES 52-54

7th Race 5.00pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%

Blue Ribbon Handicap Stakes (DIV I)

Our penultimate race is a six furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

PAGES 56-58

8th Race 5.35pm

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%

Blue Ribbon Handicap Stakes (DIV II)

Some races can often prove very popular with Owners and Trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for To avoid horses being denied a run which is disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Crafted using innovative dealcoholisation technology, Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% delivers the same crisp, refreshing flavour and delicate balance of bitterness and citrus notes that define the original lager Whether you’re celebrating a thrilling raceday, savouring the moment, or enjoying a mindful drink, Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% lets you indulge responsibly, without compromise.

At Schweppes we owe our name (and eternal effervescence) to our founding father – Jacob Schweppe – a Swiss jeweller, craftsman and restless innovator. Unsatisfied with simply being one of the best watchmakers in Geneva, in 1783, he mastered the art of bottling bubbles and became the first person in history to create carbonated soft drinks on a mass scale. Soon after, he set sail for England to quench his thirst for something a little more exciting.

Causing quite the stir among the high society, his sparkling creation was a big hit. More than 225 years later, our effervescence – and innovative spirit – is just as iconic as it was then.

Formed in 1969 by the three Carey brothers, the Carey Group is a leading familyowned construction business, delivering a range of specialist civil engineering and dry lining services across the UK. At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
