W E L C O M E

Welcome to the Spring Family Raceday, our final Jumps meeting of the 2024/25 season.

We have seen some thrilling action on the track throughout the winter months, including Crambo winning the Howden Long Walk Hurdle for the second year in a row, Jonbon impressively taking the BetMGM Clarence House Chase, and Pic D’Orhy once again leading from start to finish in the Betfair Ascot Chase.

Some of that Ascot form played out well at the recent Cheltenham Festival with Jonbon second in the Queen Mother Champion Chase while Lulamba filled the same spot in the Triumph Hurdle after a successful British debut here. BetMGM Mares’ Hurdle runner-up Kargese won the County Hurdle, and runaway Ebony Horse Club Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase winner The Changing Man finished second in the Ultima Handicap Chase.

Today we have £150,000 in prize money across the six race card with the Sodexo Live! Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase set to feature plenty of old favourites including 2023 winner and 2024 runner-up Two For Gold.

Off the track, there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy and there is a map of all the activities available in the racecard. Elsewhere, the shortlisted entries for the 2025 Royal Ascot Schools Art Competition are on display in the Pavilion for you to cast your votes.

Our grateful thanks go to today’s race sponsors Howden, LK Bennett, Sodexo Live! and Dentakay. The last race of the day is sponsored by the Colts and Fillies Club, our free membership club for under 18s. Today, members of the club Austin and Isla will judge the Best Turned Out horse and present trophies to winning connections.

Ascot Racecourse Supports is also proud to welcome three families from the Barrie Wells Trust Box4Kids charity today and they will experience the day from one of our boxes.

We hope you and your family have a fantastic day and we look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot soon. Our next meeting, on Wednesday 30th April, is our first Flat fixture of the 2025 season, Royal Ascot Trials Day presented by Eventmasters.

Yours sincerely,

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

The Howden Maiden Hurdle Race

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, three and a half furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and will almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience they gain today.

PAGES 22-23

2nd Race 2.45pm

The Sodexo Live!

Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Race

The second race on the card is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds only, also known as juveniles To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.

PAGES 28-29

3rd Race 3.20pm

The LK Bennett Handicap Chase

Our next race of the day is a two mile and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

PAGES 34-35

4th Race 3.55pm

The Dentakay Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allows them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This particular two mile, seven and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races and have a handicap rating between 0-110

PAGES 38-39

5th Race 4.30pm

The Sodexo Live! Veterans’ Handicap Chase

Our penultimate race, as the race title suggests, is a veterans’ steeple chase designed specifically for those in the later stages of their National Hunt careers These types of races often attract some past stars of the sport and provide a perfect opportunity for fans to catch a final glimpse of their equine heroes before they are retired. In order to qualify for this three mile handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be officially rated between 0 and 150.

PAGES 42-43

6th Race 5.05pm

The Colts and Fillies Club Handicap Hurdle Race

Our finale is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race which has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0 to 140. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)

22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Today, we are delighted to again welcome beneficiaries of The Barrie Wells Trust, a charity founded and funded by Barrie Wells MBE, that runs the Box4Kids initiative. The charity is unique in that it does not ask for any monetary donations, just simply the kind donation of executive boxes.

Box4Kids invites seriously ill and disabled children to enjoy a sporting or entertainment event in the luxury of an executive box. Comfortable and safe, a box is an ideal environment for a child who is normally unable to attend these events due to their illness or disability Most importantly, it’s the perfect way to make a child feel special for the day, giving them a VIP experience to remember.

The Trust collaborates with over 250 sports clubs, entertainment venues and boxholders who kindly donate their boxes. To date, over 22,500 children and their families have enjoyed a Box4Kids experience. The Trust has a network of 206 hospitals, hospices and charities across the UK including Great Ormond Street, Royal Manchester Children’s, Great North Children’s and Alder Hey who nominate children to attend.

Getting involved is easy. Whether you’re a business, a club, event venue or an individual, Box4Kids invites you to donate your box and aims to make it as simple as possible. Just choose an event you’d like to donate your box for and the charity does the rest, organising logistics, inviting children from local hospitals and hosting them with their families on the day.

We hope that Annika, Connie, David and their respective families enjoy their special day with us.

If you are interested in donating your executive box or would like to find out more about the Trust and Box4Kids, you can contact the team directly at info@barriewells.org or via the office on 01524 590600.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.

More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses

During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty

generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals

There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

At our 2024 Spring Family Raceday, we were delighted to open our dedicated sensory room. The room offers guests aged 16-years-old and under with neuro-diverse conditions the space to enjoy a quiet moment away from the excitement of an Ascot raceday.

Since opening, over 100 families have used the room with 77% of those who responded to the survey reporting that they would likely return knowing that the room is available. We are proud to have been the first UK racecourse to have this dedicated space and the feedback received has been very positive:

“…the sensory room actually rescued our day out. Our daughter was becoming overwhelmed - she was panicking and wanted to go home. However after 20 mins in such a peaceful space, she was able to calm and then enjoy the rest of the day - and we got to stay for the day too. Knowing the room was there if she needed it helped hugely. “

Today, as part of our ongoing desire to make the racecourse a more diverse event space, we have the Social Tree Climbers with us. They are running two tree climbing activations for children, with one of the trees dedicated to providing those with disabilities/accessibility needs the opportunity to scale a tree via a special pod. If you get a moment, please do go and watch the climbers in action in The Gardens

With Neurodiversity Celebration Week having taken place 17th-23rd March 2025, we are also shining a light on Parenting Special Children, a Reading-based charity who help parents and carers navigate the world of SEND. The charity will benefit from our bucket collection today so please donate if you are able.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
