Welcome to the Spring Family Raceday, our final Jumps meeting of the 2025/26 season.

We have seen some spectacular racing over the winter months, headlined by the brilliant Jonbon winning both the Grade 1 BetMGM Clarence House Chase and the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase in the space of four weeks.

Plenty of Ascot formlines were well represented at the Cheltenham Festival with Wodhooh, who started her season winning the Ladbrokes Ascot Hurdle, taking the Grade 1 Mares’ Hurdle as well as Wilful, who won the Festive Handicap Hurdle in December, landing the County Hurdle. Meanwhile, Jango Baie, an impressive winner of the Ladbrokes 1965 Chase, found only Gaelic Warrior too good in the Gold Cup. We are pleased to offer over £185,000 in prize money on today’s seven-race card with the Sodexo Live! Veterans’ Handicap Steeple Chase set to feature popular jumps stalwarts such as Copperhead and Certainly Red. We would also like to thank Sodexo Live! for their sponsorship of the £40,000 Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at 3.05pm whilst we wish a very happy birthday to David Keen, who sponsors the second race on the card.

Off the track, there will be plenty for the whole family to enjoy. This year, young racegoers can step into a world inspired by Enid Blyton's 'The Magic Faraway Tree', with free themed entertainment throughout the day.

The Ascot Racecourse Supports Horse Rangers Hampton Maiden Hurdle Race

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this extended two mile, three furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and will almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience they gain today.

The David Keen Handicap Chase

Our next race of the day is a two mile, five furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

The Sodexo Live! Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Race

The third race on the card is a two mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds only, also known as juveniles To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.

Our next race of the day is a two mile and half a furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allows them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This particular two mile, seven and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races and have a handicap rating between 0-110.

The Sodexo Live! Veterans’ Handicap Chase

Our penultimate race, as the race title suggests, is a veterans’ steeple chase designed specifically for those in the later stages of their National Hunt careers. These types of races often attract some past stars of the sport and provide a perfect opportunity for fans to catch a final glimpse of their equine heroes before they are retired. In order to qualify for this three mile handicap, horses must be ten-years-old or older and be officially rated between 0 and 150.

The Colts and Fillies Club Handicap Hurdle Race

Our finale is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race which has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards rated from 0 to 140. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Local Schools Art Competition

2025 Winning Entries

We are delighted to present our annual Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition, which invites local schools to submit artwork inspired by the theme “Royal Ascot,” celebrating the spectacle of our international event.

This community initiative gives children and schools from the local area the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, creating a colourful walkway for both Royal Ascot visitors and local residents Pupils aged 4–14 from local schools have submitted their creative pieces for the chance to win cash prizes of £1,000 for their school, along with Amazon vouchers for themselves.

Our weekend sessions offer progression through four badge levels, with young people learning at their own pace and supporting each other through peer to peer learning. Working with the horses helps them develop practical skills, grow in confidence and build lasting friendships

Riding for the Disabled (RDA)

Our RDA sessions support children, young people and adults with physical, neurological and learning disabilities Led by qualified coaches, sessions focus on individual goals and help improve balance, core strength, coordination, confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Stable Minds

Stable Minds is a five week wellbeing programme for children and young people facing barriers to participation, including care experience, neurodivergence, learning differences and financial disadvantage. Led by trained staff, this programme offers structured, unmounted sessions that build confidence, improve emotional regulation and strengthen communication and resilience.

The Healing Horse

The Healing Horse programme is delivered by a qualified mental health practitioner and offers therapeutic, groundwork sessions for children and young people experiencing challenges with their mental wellbeing.

Through guided horse centred activities, participants develop self awareness, confidence and healthier coping strategies The programme is available as a five week group course or as 1:1 or paired sessions

Prior’s Court exists to transform the lives of autistic young people with complex needs; to empower them to achieve the impossible and give their families the magic moments they never thought they would have

A registered charity, Prior’s Court provides education and residential care services for young people aged 5-25 Young people at Prior’s Court are autistic, have severe learning disabilities and complex needs such as epilepsy, ADHD, communication and sensory processing needs As a result, the vast majority of young people at Prior’s Court live at the charity’s West Berkshire site all-year-round, away from the family home.

This is one of the reasons why Prior’s Court runs its Enriching Experiences appeal. The complex needs and sensory challenges of the young people at Prior’s Court can make it hugely difficult for them to attend seasonal events in the community that others their age do - such as music festivals, summer fairgrounds, fireworks displays, and Christmas Carol Concerts - so this appeal provides these same experiences but tailors them to the needs of the young people to ensure they are able to access them.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have seen the risk of falling reduce by 11 per cent while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

HORSE WELFARE

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:

a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.

b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund

Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.

In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
