SATURDAY 9TH MAY 2026
Official Programme £5.00

Welcome to the second day of the Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% May Racing Weekend.
It is an exciting time of year as the Flat season went up a gear last weekend with the first Classics being run at Newmarket Bow Echo was particularly impressive in the 2,000 Guineas and we cannot wait to see him reappear in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The 1,000 Guineas winner, True Love, won the Queen Mary Stakes last year and it was great to hear that she will bid for further Royal Ascot glory in the Coronation Stakes
Meanwhile, at Royal Ascot Trials Day last week, the likes of Adaay Of Scarlett, Coppull and Jonquil won well and we look forward to seeing them back here next month.
This is our last raceday before Royal Ascot and there is over £295,000 of prize money on offer across the seven-race card. We thank Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% for their sponsorship of this weekend, as well as four races on today’s card. We are also very grateful to race sponsors Carey Group and Mariner Systems for their support.
The feature race is the £100,000 Carey Group Victoria Cup over seven furlongs, which is always a thrilling contest Last year, Hickory got up right in the nick of time to pip Qirat at the post – the former would win again at Ascot in September whilst Qirat went on to cause a huge shock when winning the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. It should be another exciting renewal today with Hickory and 2024 winner, The Wizard Of Eye, both bidding to become the first dual winner of the race since it was first run at Ascot in 1963.
Off the track, we are delighted to welcome the winners and runners-up from the annual Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition to the racecourse. They will be presented with their prizes and have a group photo in the parade ring after the Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition Handicap Stakes at 3.30pm.
We hope you enjoy your day and look forward to welcoming you back here for the Royal Meeting in just over five weeks.
Yours sincerely

Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His
Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 1.10pm
Your guide to all of today’s races
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap Stakes
Today’s opener is a six furlong Novice Stakes which is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 1.45pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% British EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
This race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old fillies and upwards, rated between 0-100 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
PAGES 38-42
3rd Race 2.20pm
The Carey Group Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap)
Our feature race is a seven furlong heritage handicap and is for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 44-46
4th Race 2.55pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Italy Handicap Stakes
Our fourth race is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for four-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure
competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 50-51
5th Race 3.30pm
The Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition Handicap Stakes
This race is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
PAGES 52-54
6th Race 4.05pm
The Mariner Systems Fillies’ Handicap Stakes
The sixth contest is a one mile and two furlong handicap that has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 66 and 85 However, horses officially rated in excess of 85 are also eligible to take part The conditions of this race stipulate that the maximum weight to be carried by a horse rated 85 would be 10st 2lb, so should a horse rated 87 be entered to run, they would be asked to carry 2lb more than the top weight.
PAGES 56-59
7th Race 4.40pm
The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Blue Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a six furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
This Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Race weekend, Peroni Nastro Azzurro is bringing a taste of Italian aperitivo culture to Ascot with Il Fresco di Peroni.
The striking Renaissance inspired 3D installation invites visitors to step inside the artwork itself, capture the moment and enjoy a refreshing Peroni –celebrating creativity, craftsmanship and effortless Italian style.
A brilliant example of how culture, design and premium beer can come together in unexpected ways.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)
22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY
MUDBIR’s defeat on his final 3-y-o start shouldn’t be taken as evidence that the handicapper has got him and he’s taken to resume his progression on his reappearance. Shiplake impressed with 2 all-weather wins for new trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy over the winter and is second choice. Defence Minister, Great Acclaim, Shafdar and Ascot specialist Hickory head the many dangers.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses
This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.
Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

We are delighted to announce the winners of our annual Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition, which this year received 1,680 entries from pupils aged 4–14 across 34 local schools
More than 3,500 votes were cast both online and in person. Winning artists received £1,000 for their school, along with Amazon vouchers to spend themselves.
Since 2018, this much-loved community initiative has given local children the opportunity to see their artwork displayed in the Ascot Heath Tunnel, transforming it into a vibrant walkway enjoyed by Royal Ascot racegoers and local residents alike.
To celebrate their achievements, winners, runners-up and teachers from the representative schools have also been invited to enjoy a special prize giving afternoon tea at Ascot today.
In honour of the competition, the 3.30pm race has also been named the Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition Handicap Stakes, with the young artists given the special role of selecting the Best Turned Out Horse.
A commemorative photograph will be taken on the day and will take pride of place alongside the children’s artwork in the Ascot Heath Tunnel.

JUAN LES PINS arrives here in fine form and looks the most solid option in a wide-open race. Arantes Nascimento usually does his racing over further nowadays but he’s a consistent sort and the anticipated strong pace could bring him into play, with Dicko The Legend, who might’ve won granted a better passage at Southwell last week, is also a likely player if able to break on terms

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.
