FEATURING THE ASCOT BEER FESTIVAL, IN ASSOCIATION WITH CAMRA

Welcome Welcome to the second day of The Big Ascot Food & Wine Racing Weekend. Off the track, this weekend offers a taste sensation with star chef demonstrations, artisan food and drink stalls to enjoy. There is also wine tasting with Hallgarten & Novum Wines as well as masterclasses with Silent Pool Gin. Our feature race is the Tote.co.uk Money Back 2nd Handicap, a £100,000 Heritage Handicap over a mile and a half for three-year-olds. Last year’s contest was won by Tenability who has since recorded two Listed successes. Meanwhile the opening two-year-old contest proved to be extremely informative with one of this year’s star three-year-olds, Maltese Cross, making his debut, finishing in second place ahead of Royal Ascot winner Lost Boys. We would like to extend a warm welcome and grateful thanks to this year's race sponsors Tote UK, Silent Pool Gin and Schweppes for their support of today’s card. Last week was National Racehorse Week, which celebrates the life of the thoroughbred, enabling everyone to have the opportunity to see the first-class care and attention that all racehorses receive throughout their lives. We were delighted to take our Equine Ambassador, Side Glance, on some more adventures to meet the public in Windsor Great Park and St. James’s Church in London. ‘Sidey’ will also be in his usual position on the Cedar Tree Lawn this afternoon ready to greet racegoers. Ahead of racing, we will be hosting a special bloodstock forum in the Parade Ring called ‘Foal to Finish Line’ where you can hear from a panel of industry experts as they share their experiences on the sales process and what it takes to spot the stars of the future. Our next race meeting is the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October, featuring the ever-popular Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA. We hope you can join us then. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RAC I N G PAG E S Your guide to all of today’s races

PAG E S 1 6 -1 8 1st Race 1.40pm The Schweppes Handicap Stakes This race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAG E S 2 2 -2 4 2nd Race 2.10pm The tote.co.uk Money Back 2nd Handicap Stakes (Heritage Handicap) This race is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds only. Just like the previous race, it has no rating restrictions attached to it but this still impacts the higher rated horses, as they concede weight to their lower rated rivals. So expect this race to be just as competitive as the opener. PAG E S 3 0 - 3 1 3rd Race 2.45pm The tote £75K Guaranteed Placepot Today EBF “Confined” Maiden Fillies’ Stakes This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds which have not ran more than once. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking. PAG E S 3 8 - 39 4th Race 3.25pm The Silent Pool Gin “Confined” Handicap Stakes This is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 76 to 95 and have not won more than one race. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PAG E S 4 4 - 4 6 5th Race 4.00pm The Download The tote App British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95. PAG E S 5 0 - 5 2 6th Race 4.35pm The CLUB26 Handicap Stakes This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. PAG E S 5 6 - 5 8 7th Race 5.10pm The tote.co.uk For Racing & Sports Betting Handicap Stakes The finale is over the shortest distance, five furlongs, and is another handicap for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Today’s sponsors Ascot would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s race sponsors for their generous support.

RACE 1

At Schweppes we owe our name (and eternal effervescence) to our founding father - Jacob Schweppe - craftsman and restless innovator. He mastered the art of bottling bubbles and became the first person in history to create carbonated soft drinks on a mass scale. Causing quite the stir among the high society, his sparkling creation was a big hit. More than 225 years later, our effervescence – and innovative spirit – is just as iconic as it was then.

Equine and human welfare at Ascot Racecourse

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy. Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

Our official photographers are: Getty Images – gettyimages.co.uk Megan Coggin - meganrosephotography.photoshelter.com Nicole Hains – nicole@nicolehains.com HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse. ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a)

Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.

b)

Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund

Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality. In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions. HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.
