Welcome to King George Day at Ascot, as we celebrate the 75th running of the historic King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes

This year’s contest is worth a record £1.5million, highlighting our commitment to maintaining this historic race’s position as the best mile-and-a-half race worldwide, the position it held in the 2024 list of Longines World’s Top 100 Group 1 Races. With a roll call including Shergar, Nijinsky, Galileo and Enable, this is a race that has truly stood the test of time and has transcended the boundaries of the sport with its impact. Today we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the great battle fought out by Grundy and Bustino in 1975 and which to many represents the ‘Race of the Century’.

This year’s renewal looks high-class, with all five runners having winning Group 1 form. Jan Brueghel took this year’s Coronation Cup at Epsom, edging out Calandagan who has subsequently won at the top level in France. Kalpana brings course-anddistance form having been successful in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes here last October, and Rebel’s Romance will be chasing his eighth Group 1 victory after winning the Hardwicke Stakes last time out at Royal Ascot. Even the likely outsider and pacemaker, Continuous, is a Classic-winning horse after his 2023 St. Leger Stakes success.

To celebrate the 75th running of the race, there is a display of historic memorabilia from over the years inside the Grandstand, including programmes, racecards, and trophies from the past three-quarters of a century.

Today’s eight-race programme is a World Pool event once again in partnership with the Hong Kong Jockey Club and it is filled with quality throughout. The two Group 3 contests - the Sodexo Live! Princess Margaret Stakes and the Longines Valiant Stakes - as well as the £150,000 Moët & Chandon International Stakes serve as fantastic appetisers for the main event We would also like to thank today’s race sponsors, the British EBF, Betfred and Whispering Angel, for their support of today’s card.

The seventh race this afternoon, the Me2 Club Handicap Stakes, highlights the important work done by this local inclusion charity which helps children with additional needs take part in mainstream activities.

Our next meeting at Ascot is the ever-popular Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup & Concert on Saturday August 9th, with a worldwide cast of jockeys set to compete here in this unique team-based contest. We hope to see you then.

Yours sincerely,

The British EBF Crocker Bulteel

“Confined” Maiden Stakes

Today’s opener is a six furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds which have not run more than once. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory, most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

PAGES 24-26

2nd Race 1.40pm

The Sodexo Live!

Princess Margaret Stakes (Group 3)

This six furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, and 5lb for a Group 1 or 2 success.

PAGES 30-32

3rd Race 2.20pm

The Longines Valiant Stakes (Group 3)

The third race on today’s card is also a Group 3 contest, this time over a one mile trip. This specific race is for fillies and mares aged three-years and upwards. Initially, each of the fillies or mares will be allocated a weight depending on age before any penalties are awardedthree-year-olds will carry 8st 11lb, while four-year-olds and upwards will carry 9st 5lb If a horse has won a Pattern contest in 2025, they will receive the following penalties - 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb to Group 2 winners and 7lb to Group 1 winners

PAGES 34-37

4th Race 3.00pm

The Moët & Chandon International Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

This race is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

PAGES 40-42

5th Race 3.35pm

The Betfred Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100

PAGES 48-49

6th Race 4.10pm

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1)

This one mile and four furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 1 contest, the highest level of racing. Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland and occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the large levels of prize money available. Victory in a Group 1 race is the pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud.

PAGES 52-53

7th Race 4.45pm

The Me2 Club Handicap Stakes

The penultimate race is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PAGES 56-58

8th Race 5.15pm

The Whispering Angel Handicap Stakes

Our finale is a five furlong handicap sprint for three-year-olds and upwards. Just like the International Stakes at 3.00pm today, it has no specific ratings for horses, making this a highly competitive affair on paper

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

As Ascot prepares to host the 75th running of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Britain’s most prestigious open-age Flat race, it’s a good time to look back at some of the celebrated winners that have established this contest in the pantheon of racing’s legendary races.

The inaugural running in 1951 was won by Supreme Court with the following two editions also going to three-year-olds – Tulyar in 1952 and Pinza in 1953 who had both won that year’s Derby at Epsom. The first older horse to win the race was Aureole – and there could be no more apt victor Bred by King George VI, ownership of the colt passed to Queen Elizabeth II upon the King’s death in 1952. A boisterous individual, like many sired by Hyperion, the four-year-old unseated jockey Eph Smith on the way to the start but showed his class in the race itself, winning by three quarters of a length.

It wasn’t long before international eyes were drawn to this prize. The following two renewals both went to European trainers, first the French-trained Vimy in 1955 and then in 1956, Ribot came over from Italy looking to maintain his unbeaten record. Bred by the legendary Federico Tesio and trained by Ugo

Penco, ‘il cavallo super ’ proved himself the super horse when winning the King George by five lengths – his 14th race without defeat in a career that would finish a perfect 16 from 16 after a second success in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe that October.

The genuinely golden era of the race – and British racing in general – came in the 1970s, when the roll call of winners was truly something to behold. Nijinsky made it a perfect 10 in his career when taking the 1970 edition of the race, with jockey Lester Piggott – riding his fourth winner in the race – casually glancing round and easing up 100 yards before the line, such was his dominance. Mill Reef in 1971 was just as impressive, a six-length success barely getting to the bottom of his ability And Brigadier Gerard in 1972 proved himself tough as teak when contesting his fifth race in nine weeks and staying on dourly for success. Meanwhile the mare Dahlia set a track record in 1973 then followed up in 1974, becoming the first ever dual winner of the contest.

Then, we come to the ‘Race of the Century’ in 1975, the epic duel between the three-year-old Grundy, winner of that year’s Derby, and Bustino, the previous year’s St. Leger hero.

LESTER PIGGOTT AND NIJINSKY RETURN TO THE WINNERS’ ENCLOSURE AFTER VICTORY IN 1970

A prolonged battle between the two down the home straight resulted in the pair trading the lead multiple times before, eventually, Grundy prevailed in a winning time almost two-anda-half seconds quicker than the record Dahlia set two years prior – with the mare herself finishing back in third.

There’s no more iconic name in racing than Shergar, the horse who joined public folklore when disappearing whilst at stud in 1983. His last win on the track came at Ascot in 1981 when winning the King George by four lengths in the manner of a truly generational colt. Through the 1980s, Ascot’s middledistance showpiece was host to many more transcendent talents sporting famous colours, including Khalid Abdullah’s Dancing Brave, who made up for Derby defeat in 1986 with an authoritative success here, and Shadwell’s Nashwan who won the race in 1989.

The 1990s too served up some sumptuous equine specimens, with Lammtarra emulating his sire Nijinsky in winning the 1995 edition on just the third start of his career – that after taking the Derby on only his second. That would be the first of four victories in five years for Saeed bin Suroor, who trained Swain to become the second dual winner of the race when becoming only the fifth five-year-old champion in 1997, then the first ever six-year-old when following up the next summer. As if to demonstrate the Godolphin dominance, Daylami – fourth in 1998 – would go three places better just before the turn of the millennium.

And it was once we began the third millennium that the second modern superpower we now know of began to emerge. Montjeu’s success in 2000 then Galileo in 2001 saw the emergence of the Coolmore empire of Tabor, Magnier and Smith begin to assert their dominance, with Hurricane Run, Dylan Thomas and Duke Of Marmalade adding further success in consecutive years from 2006 to 2008.

Turning to the last 15 years and there were yet more record-breakers to wow the fervent Ascot crowd. In 2010, Harbinger established a new track record when beating Grundy’s 35-year-old record by 0.2 seconds, albeit on a track that had been redeveloped in 2005 His record stood for just three years, with the German-trained four-year-old Novellist taking more than two seconds off that figure to set a standard that still remains to this day – 2:24.60 And by the end of the decade, we had the new wondermare – Enable, matching Swain and Dahlia’s records in 2019 in a stunning battle with Crystal Ocean, then becoming the first ever three-time winner in 2020 when beating Sovereign and Japan.

As we approach the 75th running of the race, memories of Goliath’s victory last year, cruising into contention and streaking clear with Christophe Soumillon saluting the crowd, stay fresh in our minds But every race since the inaugural edition in 1951 has made memories, captivated crowds, and crowned champions This year’s renewal will be no different.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY

A valuable long-standing feature maiden in which preference is for NEW MONARCH, who found only an experienced odds-on favourite too good at Newbury last month and with further progress on the cards, Andrew Balding’s colt is taken to go one better Words of Truth proved less clued up than typical for this yard first time up, but he may prove a different proposition now gelded, while newcomers Dark Shore and Harbor Lock both tick plenty of boxes on paper so round off the shortlist.

SUMMARY

AALTO came clear of the rest when only narrowly denied a second successive Bunbury Cup by the progressive More Thunder at Newmarket a fortnight ago and looks the pick of the weights off effectively 1lb lower this afternoon. The Michael Dods team has really found form in recent weeks so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see last year’s winner Northern Express bounce back to form and provide the main threat. Billyjoh and Akkadian Thunder also make the shortlist.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree

as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

Every child deserves the chance to play, make friends, and feel like they belong. But for children with additional needs and disabilities, everyday activities like swimming, Scouts or youth club can be impossible without the right support. That’s where Me2 Club steps in.

Me2 Club matches children aged 5–19 with trained volunteers who support them to take part in mainstream activities Helping them grow in confidence, independence, and happiness. It also runs inclusive youth groups, giving young people safe spaces to build friendships, and just be themselves.

For many families, it’s often the first time they’ve seen their child included, accepted, and thriving.

The charity is currently running an Emergency Appeal to raise £80,000 to keep its services running. Without urgent funding, Me2 Club could face significant cutbacks –or even closure. Demand for its support is higher than ever and without vital donations, they simply can’t meet that demand.

In recognition of the charity’s work, we have named our 4.45 race The Me2 Club Handicap Stakes. The charity is also our official bucket collector so please donate if you are able either at exit or via the QR donation code.

Every pound you give helps a child with additional needs take part, belong, and thrive.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
