25th July 2026

Welcome to King George Day, one of the great summer occasions at Ascot.
We are delighted to be running the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes for a record £2 million today and earlier this week we announced that the prize money on offer will increase again in 2027 to £2.5 million.
This is our midsummer showpiece, and we are focused on ensuring that it continues to maintain the profile and prestige of the mile-and-a-half division across the globe. With that in mind it is fantastic to see some of the very best horses from Britain, Ireland, France and Japan in today’s field.
Last year the race was won by the 2025 Longines World’s Best Racehorse, Calandagan, and he returns today, bidding to become the fourth horse to win back-to-back renewals of the race. A rematch with Japanese star Masquerade Ball is just one of the storylines on show. The Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini represents the Classic generation of three-year-olds and in addition we have other top-class older horses Minnie Hauk and Kalpana as well as the 2024 winner Goliath. It is a truly mouthwatering prospect
The Longines Valiant Stakes and Princess Margaret Japan Cup Stakes provide excellent supporting action at Group 3 level. Our sincere thanks go to all of today’s race sponsors, Dentakay, the Japan Racing Association, Longines, Moët & Chandon, Betfred and Whispering Angel. Their support is so important in enabling us to continue to invest in prize money.
Our next meeting is the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on Saturday 8th August. We hope to see you back at Ascot then.
Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Dentakay EBF Crocker Bulteel
“Confined” Maiden Stakes
Today’s opener is a six furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds which have not run more than once. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory, most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
PAGES 24-26
2nd Race 1.45pm
The Princess Margaret Japan Cup Stakes (Group 3)
This six furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, and 5lb for a Group 1 or 2 success
PAGES 30-31
3rd Race 2.20pm
The Longines Valiant Stakes (Group 3)
The third race on today’s card is also a Group 3 contest, this time over a one mile trip This specific race is for fillies and mares aged three-years and upwards. Initially, each of the fillies or mares will be allocated a weight depending on age before any penalties are awarded - three-year-olds will carry 8st 11lb, while four-year-olds and upwards will carry 9st 5lb If a horse has won a Pattern contest in 2025, they will receive the following penalties - 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb to Group 2 winners and 7lb to Group 1 winners.
PAGES 38-41
4th Race 2.55pm
The Moët & Chandon International Handicap Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
This race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races
PAGES 48-50
5th Race 3.35pm
The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1)
This one mile and four furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards is a Group 1 contest, the highest level of racing. Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland and occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the large levels of prize money available. Victory in a Group 1 race is the pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those horses that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers at stud.
PAGES 54-56
6th Race 4.10pm
The Ascot Shop Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130
PAGES 60-62
7th Race 4.45pm
The Betfred Handicap Stakes
Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100
PAGES 64-66
8th Race 5.20pm
The Whispering Angel Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a five furlong handicap sprint for three-year-olds and upwards. Just like the International Stakes at 2.55pm today, it has no specific ratings for horses, making this a highly competitive affair on paper

22. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Ascot’s much-loved Equine Ambassador, Side Glance (“Sidey”), is with us today and looking forward to meeting racegoers from gates open until 14.00 on Cedar Tree Lawn.
In 2023, Retraining of Racehorses launched “Horses for Courses”, an exciting new initiative to showcase the care given and opportunities available to racehorses once their racing days come to end. A former international racehorse and now a favourite with families and young racing fans, Sidey continues to help people learn more about racehorses and life after racing through his community work and appearances at Ascot.
His new children’s book, Side Glance: Life After the Finish Line, written by award-winning author Laura Allain-Henry MBE and illustrated by Lou Baker Smith, tells the heartwarming story of Sidey’s journey beyond the racecourse.

CALANDAGAN can become the fourth dual winner of this midsummer highlight. Minnie Hauk looked very much back on her game in the Prince of Wales’s at the Royal meeting and, with the step back up to 1 1/2m promising to be in her favour, may provide a bigger threat than Irish Derby winning stablemate Benvenuto Cellini. Masquerade Ball is also closely matched with the selection on last year’s Japan Cup form.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses
This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals
There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.
Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

Retraining of Racehorses is the sport’s charity, helping former racehorses thrive in new careers after racing.

SPOKEN TRUTH: Following its run on 4/7/2026 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run.
FRANKIES DREAM: Following its run on 10/7/2026 it was reported that the horse ran too free.
BETTING FORECAST: Correct as of 2 30pm (24/07/26)
4-1 Blue RC (IRE), Grizedale (GB), 9-2 Asmen Warrior (IRE), 13-2 Crown Board (IRE), 10-1 Christian David (IRE), Spanish Voice (GB), 14-1 Spoken Truth (IRE), Frankies Dream (IRE), Urban Lion (GB), 16-1 Hickory (IRE), 22-1 Salam Dubawi (GB)
A case can be made for most of these but BLUE RC showed himself to be still on the up with an excellent second in the Hunt Cup over C&D last month and is hard to side against. Grizedale continues to impress and rates a big danger though in his bid for a third victory of 2026, while Hickory’s good record here means he can’t be ruled out either. Asmen Warrior completes the shortlist in a cracking handicap.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
