Welcome to the second day of the Ladbrokes November Racing Weekend.

This is often an extremely informative day of racing with a brace of Grade 2 races alongside two valuable handicaps which showcase stamina in the Windsor Horse Rangers Berkshire National and speed in the Castello Banfi Hurst Park Chase.

The first running of the Berkshire National in 2024 was won by Beauport who went on to run very creditably in the Grand National so we might see another Aintree contender emerge today.

On this day last year, we also saw the future Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace who finished fourth behind Lucky Place in the Ladbrokes Ascot Hurdle and today we look to have another good-quality renewal with Grade 1 winners Potters Charm and Crambo running. We are particularly pleased to welcome the exciting Wodhooh from Ireland, a Cheltenham Festival winner whose only defeat over hurdles came in the Aintree Hurdle in April at the hands of Lossiemouth.

We are extremely grateful to Ladbrokes for their support of this weekend including three races today. The pick of those looks to be the Ladbrokes 1965 Chase where Pic D’Orhy bids for a record-breaking third win in the race up against high-class rivals in the shape of Il Est Francais, Jango Baie, Gidleigh Park and Master Chewy.

Our thanks also go to Restorations UK, Castello Banfi and Remix Dry Mortar for their support as race sponsors today.

We were absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to be named RCA Showcase Champion Racecourse at the annual RCA Showcase Awards at York Racecourse last week. Ascot is the first racecourse to win this award three times and the last time was in 2016 so this is a great accolade for the whole team here after a very successful year delivering the best possible experience to customers. We look forward to hosting the 2026 RCA Showcase Awards next November.

Our next meeting is the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend, itself the winner of the Exceptional Raceday Delivery Showcase Award last week. We hope to see you back at Ascot on 19th-20th December for what is always a fantastic two days of racing filled with Christmas spirit.

Yours sincerely,

His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile, five and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

PAGES 18-20

2nd Race 12.55pm

The Get Your Ladbrokes Free Ascot Bet Mares' Handicap Hurdle Race

This race is restricted to fillies and mares aged four and above, which have been rated from 0 to 130 It will be run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125

PAGES 24-25

3rd Race 1.30pm

The Ladbrokes 1965 Steeple Chase (Grade 2)

The first of our two Grade 2 contests today, these races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up Initially, the weights in this two mile and five furlong steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, with four-year-olds in receipt of a 9lb allowance. Penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success.

PAGES 30-32

4th Race 2.05pm

The Windsor Horse Rangers Berkshire National Handicap Steeple Chase

This is a three mile, five and a half furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

PAGES 40-41

5th Race 2.40pm

The Ladbrokes Ascot Hurdle Race (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle) (Grade 2)

Like our third race, this is another Grade 2 event, although this one is a hurdle race to be run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. The penalty structure remains the same, but there would be no allowances for any four-year-olds taking part.

PAGES 52-54

6th Race 3.15pm

The Castello Banfi Hurst Park Handicap Steeple Chase

Our penultimate race is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards, run over two miles and one furlong. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, this has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races

PAGES 58-59

7th Race 3.45pm

The Remix Dry Mortar Novices' Handicap Hurdle Race

Our final race is another novice hurdle, these races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular three mile novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have seen the risk of falling reduce by 11 per cent while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY

An intriguing renewal of this contest and, with a strong pace likely, JANGO BAIE could be the answer. He wouldn’t have won the Arkle had the favourite Majborough not underperformed, but he did remarkably well to emerge on top that day, all things considered, and he backed that up when third at Aintree on his final run of last season. If Il Est Francais brings his A-game he will be a big threat, while Pic d’Orhy must be feared in his bid to win this again and Gidleigh Park also merits respect.

We are a volunteer led educational charity based in Fifield, near Windsor Our mission is to give young people the hands-on skills to care for, handle, ride and connect with horses in a supportive, nurturing and fun environment. Through building relationships with horses and each other, rangers develop as individuals, build self-confidence and resilience, learn communication and team-building skills, have fun and make new friends. Being a horse ranger promotes lifelong love and respect for horses and contributes to the world-wide aim of every horse being treated with respect and compassion.

The children are taught from a syllabus which gets more in depth as they progress. This is achieved via being taught practical skills on the yard and through weekly classroom- based learning sessions The rangers are given ranks and are promoted to give them more responsibility as they prove themselves. The older children teach

the younger children the skills they have learnt. We have 23 horses and ponies who are mostly older and enjoy their semi-retired lifestyle.

Around 10% of the children who attend have autism, ADHD or anxiety and we see improvements in social skills, communication and well-being. Over the years thousands of local children have been members of Windsor Horse Rangers and many have gone on to further education and careers with horses.

If you fancy volunteering with us on one of our weekend sessions, then please get in contact by emailing windsor.horse.rangers@gmail.com

It’s possible JPR ONE’s stamina was just stretched by rain-softened ground in the 17.5f Haldon Gold Cup on his reappearance. He’s now well treated on his best form and might be worth chancing in first-time cheekpieces. The main threat may come from Brookie and recent C&D 1-2 Teddy Blue and Gabriel’s Getaway

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
