We would like to thank Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% for their continued sponsorship of this exciting and often illuminating weekend of racing as it includes several races which routinely throw up key formlines for Royal Ascot and beyond.

On this raceday last year, Get It broke the six-furlong track record and then backed that up by making all in the Wokingham Stakes in June. Meanwhile, Fearnot won the mile handicap for three-year-olds and then finished third in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, before winning again at Ascot on King George Weekend. We should get plenty of pointers for the Royal Meeting today.

We are pleased to offer more than £200,000 in prize money across the seven-race programme, which represents a 32% increase on last year As a result, declaration numbers are significantly up and it looks set to be a very competitive day of action.

The Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap Stakes

Today’s opener is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

The Juddmonte EBF Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes

This race is a five furlong maiden stakes for two-year-old fillies only, which are EBF eligible Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This one mile and two furlong contest is for fillies aged three and is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are many reasons horses may not win as a two-year-old, stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season, whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

Handicap Stakes

The fourth race is a handicap over six furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating it is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has

been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

The Ascot Hospitality Handicap Stakes

This contest is another race over six furlongs However, this is for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the Flat, this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like all handicaps on today’s card, this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

Our finale is a two mile apprentice handicap for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 70 would have to carry 5lb more than a horse rated 65

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

More than 3,500 votes were cast both online and in person. Winning artists received £1,000 for their school, along with Amazon vouchers to spend themselves.

Equine and human welfare at Ascot Racecourse

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses

This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals

There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

HORSE WELFARE

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:

a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.

b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund

Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.

In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
