PROGRAMME £5.00 Friday 5th September 2025
Welcome to the first day of The Big Ascot Food & Wine Racing Weekend.
Across both days there is entertainment and inspiration on and off the track with demonstrations from Michelin-starred chefs, cocktail masterclasses, wine tasting and artisan food stalls to accompany some entertaining and competitive racing.
On the track, today’s seven-race card features plenty of variety. Three two-year-old races have the potential to again unleash future stars, as with the Classic winning Paddington which emerged from this card in 2022. Raaheeb, who runs in the Charbonnel Et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes, is one of the most exciting newcomers, as he is a full brother to the exceptional Baaeed and Hukum, both Group 1 winners at Ascot.
Our opening contest is the ever-popular LK Bennett Lady Amateur Jockeys Handicap. This was won last year by Terries Royale and Serena Brotherton, who bid to go back-to-back in the race this year. Our thanks go to LK Bennett for their continued support of the race, as well as our other race sponsors today, Wesco Anixter, Sodexo Live!, Molton Brown, and Juddmonte.
Last week was National Racehorse Week and as part of this vital industry initiative, we were delighted to take Side Glance out into the community to Camp Mohawk, a multi-functional day centre for children with special needs and their families Side Glance is Ascot’s equine ambassador through the ‘Horses For Courses’ initiative This is run by Retraining of Racehorses and highlights the fulfilling lives that racehorses live after retiring from racing.
This weekend, Ascot Racecourse Supports will also be making a donation of £1 to City Harvest for every meal purchased across Ascot-branded food outlets City Harvest puts surplus food to good use in a sustainable way by delivering the equivalent of over 1.2 million free meals a month to those in need. For every £1 donated, City Harvest will deliver enough food for three meals and you can read more about their work in the racecard. In addition, today’s charity bucket collector is Berkshire Guide Dogs so please do donate if you can.
We hope to welcome you back to Ascot tomorrow when the feature race will be the £100,000 Silent Pool Gin Handicap.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The LK Bennett Lady Amateur Jockeys Handicap Stakes
Today’s opener is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75
PAGES 22-23
2nd Race 2.20pm
The Charbonnel et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes
This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
PAGES 28-30
3rd Race 2.55pm
The Wesco Anixter EBF
Maiden Fillies' Stakes
This one mile contest for two-years-olds is another maiden stakes or in other words a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory Unlike in a handicap when the weight that each runner carries is dictated by their official handicap rating, in a maiden race all of the runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form.
PAGES 36-37
4th Race 3.30pm
The Juddmonte British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes
This six furlong Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
PAGES 40-42
5th Race 4.05pm
The Molton Brown Classified Stakes
This race is a seven furlong classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90 Unlike in a handicap when a horse's rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals
PAGES 50-53
6th Race 4.40pm
The Ascot Iron Stand Membership Handicap Stakes
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 86 to 105 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
PAGES 56-58
7th Race 5.15pm
The Sodexo Live! Handicap Stakes
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Charbonnel et Walker, purveyors of Fine English Chocolates and Truffles celebrate 150 Years
On November 22nd,1875, Madame Charbonnel and Mrs. Walker opened their first store on London’s Bond Street.
King Edward VII championed their arrival, an ardent admirer of Madame Charbonnel – a distinguished chocolatier from Paris joined forces with Mrs Walker, a British artisan known for crafting ornate hat and jewellery boxes. Mrs Walker learnt the art of making fine chocolates with Madame Charbonnel, a shared love of refinement saw decadent creations made and presented in beautiful gift boxes.
150 years later, the story continues, still crafted by hand from this famed chocolatier

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RAAHEEB leaps off the page as a brother to the top-class Hukum and Baaeed, who both had good records at Ascot, and the Royal Lodge entry could be primed to make a successful start for a yard who have struck with 3 of their last 5 newcomers. Norman Invasion and Behike are interesting debutants also.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree
as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

TIMEFORM SUMMARY
Lots with chances but it could pay to side with William Haggas’ lightly-raced HIGH DEGREE who advanced his form on his handicap debut when fifth in a big field at Goodwood and should find this return to 1m a plus. Both Bopedro (second choice) and Witch Hunter are far more exposed but figure on decent marks and can have a say too, while Mr Swivell, Ebt’s Guard and Star Anthem also warrant plenty of respect.

The pick of several appealing candidates is TACTICAL PLAN, who gave the leading pair too much rope when an eye-catching fourth at Haydock last time and, provided the ground remains on the slow side, he should go close here with Jim Crowley back in the hot-seat (he’s 2-3 when partnered by Crowley). Sea Suite is greatly respected on the back of his solid Sandown effort, while the unexposed Forty Years On and hat-trick seeking Excellent Echo are others to consider

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund
Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £560,463 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd June to 14th September 2025.
