Ascot Racecard - Friday 2nd October

Page 1

Welcome Welcome to the first day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend, featuring the 19th Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA. The feature race is the BetMGM Noel Murless Stakes. This valuable Listed event has launched the careers of the likes of Scope and Big Orange, with the latter going on to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot after winning this contest. In that race, Infraad will also be one of the first runners for ARM Racing, the new name for the late Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's racing operation, with Ibtekar also declared in the second race. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Sheikh Ahmed following his recent death and wish ARM Racing and connections, as well as all the other runners on the card, the very best of luck. We extend our grateful thanks to BetMGM for their support of that race as well as two others on the card, and of course their sponsorship of the weekend as a whole. We would also like to extend our gratitude to today’s other race sponsors, Colliers and the Victoria Racing Club, which is promoting the world-famous Melbourne Cup Carnival. Off the track, there are over 160 beers, ciders and perries to sample at the Ascot Beer Festival in association with CAMRA. You will be able to find the Festival at the east end of the Grandstand. Today, Racing to School is hosting students from the Berkshire College of Agriculture who are attending an “Equine College Careers Raceday”, which encourages students to consider racing and thoroughbred breeding as a possible career route. We also welcome our bucket collectors on behalf of Strength & Learning Through Horses, the Equine Assisted Therapy Centre based near Barnet. We hope to welcome you back tomorrow for the second day of the BetMGM Autumn Racing Weekend, as well as for Qatar Racing British Champions Day on Saturday 17th October, our final Flat fixture of 2026 and a thrilling conclusion to the British Flat season. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

RAC I N G PAG E S Your guide to all of today’s races

PAG E S 1 6 -1 9 1st Race 1.50pm The Autumn Racing Weekend Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. This specific handicap is also limited to male amateur jockeys. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PAG E S 3 6 - 3 7 4th Race 3.35pm The BetMGM Noel Murless Stakes (Listed Race) This one mile and six furlong contest for three-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 3lb for colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a pattern success.

PAG E S 2 4 -2 5 2nd Race 2.25pm The BetMGM EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes This seven furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-old fillies but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

PAG E S 4 2 - 4 5 5th Race 4.10pm The BetMGM Handicap Stakes This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

PAG E S 2 8 - 3 0 3rd Race 3.00pm The Colliers Business Rates Experts Classified Stakes This race is a one-mile classified stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90. Unlike a handicap when a horse’s rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals.

PAG E S 4 8 - 49 6th Race 4.35pm The Melbourne Cup Carnival Handicap Stakes This is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

Making a Difference Beyond the Racecourse At Ascot Racecourse, we believe in supporting the communities around us, and our recent Staff Volunteer Week demonstrated the impact that can be achieved when colleagues come together for a common cause.

During the week, 89 Ascot colleagues volunteered their time to support local charities and community organisations across Berkshire and the surrounding area. Working alongside our charity partners, teams took part in a range of practical projects, including gardening, decorating, maintenance, cleaning and sorting donations, helping to improve spaces and facilities that provide vital support to local people every day.

up their sleeves to make a real and lasting difference. In total, colleagues contributed more than 470 volunteer hours, equivalent to 67 volunteer days, demonstrating Ascot’s commitment to giving back and supporting the organisations that play such an important role in our community. We are proud of the enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication shown by everyone who took part, and grateful to the 15 organisations that welcomed our teams: Ascot Day Centre, Camp Mohawk, Dingley’s Promise, First Days, Jealott’s Hill Community Landshare, Just Around the Corner, Quest RDA, Riding A Dream Academy, Slough Foodbank, Sport in Mind, Thames Hospice, The Cowshed, Windsor Foodshare, Windsor Homeless Project and Youthline. Our sincere thanks go to every volunteer and charity partner who helped make the week such a success.

From refreshing outdoor areas and community buildings to restoring equipment and tackling long-overdue improvement projects, volunteers rolled

A Stable Future for Young People

Strength & Learning Through Horses (SLTH) Equine Therapy is delighted to be fundraising at Ascot Racecourse today, raising vital funds to help build a brighter future for young people. Based in Barnet, North London, the charity uses horses to provide specialist therapy, education and wellbeing support for children and young people aged 6 to 25, many of whom are struggling with their mental health, finding it difficult to engage with education, or facing significant challenges in their lives. The horses are at the heart of SLTH’s work. Through carefully designed activities alongside the horses and a team of psychologists and education professionals, young people develop confidence, emotional regulation, communication and relationship skills in an environment that feels very different from a classroom or traditional therapy setting. Last year alone, 648 young people accessed SLTH’s services across 982 sessions, with 93% reporting increased confidence in their abilities. Ascot Racecourse has already played an important role in supporting this work. Its generous contribution funded the construction of the charity’s 60m x 30m arena, proudly known as The Ascot Arena, providing a safe, purpose-built space where young people and horses can work together. The charity is now seeking support for the next stage of its development. The Fit For The Future Appeal aims to raise £800,000 to transform the site into London’s first purpose-built equine therapy centre for young people, with enhanced facilities for therapy, education, the horses, and the young people it supports. The SLTH Equine Therapy team are today’s official bucket collectors. Please donate at the exit gates or via the QR code if you are able to support their life-changing work. Equine and human welfare at Ascot Racecourse

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy. Further information on safety and welfare in horse racing can be found at horsepwr.co.uk

During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse. ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a)

Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.

b)

Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund

Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality. In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions. HBLB The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.
