Royal Ascot: ABrief History

“Ideal

Thesewerethe words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the historyofAscot Racecourse. It waswhilstriding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she firstsaw theland that hadsuch potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she haddiscovered, Ascot’sinaugural event –Her Majesty’s Plate –was held here upon her requestthat very same year. For morethan300 years since, the patronageoftwelvemonarchs has helped makeAscotone of the world’s best-lovedracecourses.

The racecourse waslaid out by William Lowen and Ascot’sfirst event washeld on Saturday 11th August1711, with its firstfour-daymeeting takingplace in 1768.Apermanentbuilding waserected to hold justover1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later.Itwas at the beginning of the nineteenth century wherethe origins of today’sRoyal Meeting lie.

It wasaroundthe same timethatthe rootsof today’straditionalRoyal EnclosureDress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, aclose friend of the Prince Regent, decreed thatmen of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.

Over the years, this evolvedinto the wearing of morning suits and equallyformal attirefor ladies, including of course, hats –and today, the issuing of Style Guides maintains RoyalAscot’s unique, stand-alone event experience.

Ascot’sfirstmajor redevelopment came to fruitionin1954 withthe relocation of the Straight Mile north to allowmorespace behind the stands. This wasquicklyfollowed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.

Ascot’smuch-lovedtradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardshipofLadyBeaumont, wife of then Clerk of theCourse, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.

2002 sawplenty of changetothe established pattern of RoyalAscot as it expanded to five days for HerMajesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The Cork &Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes, which wasrenamed again in 2012 to The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and this year becomes The Platinum Jubilee Stakes.

AscotRacecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting wasstaged at York in 2005.The new AscotGrandstand wasofficiallyopened by Her Majesty The Queen, on time and to its £220 million budget,on20th June 2006.

In 2009,the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup,beating the recordset by Sagarointhe 1970s.Astatue commemorating the greatstayer’sremarkable achievement nowstandsinthe Parade Ring.

Ascotcelebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the followingyear, the RoyalMeetingplayed its partinThe Queen’s DiamondJubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankelwon TheQueen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar justclung on in adramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

In 2013,Estimate wonThe GoldCup in HerMajestyThe Queen’sfamous colours to rapturous applause, havingthe previousyear wonThe Queen’sVase.

2015 wasall about one man –RyanMoore. Arguablythe world’sbestjockey,Moorewon no less than nine of the 30 races over the week, amodern dayrecord.

Alsothat year,Royal Ascot hosted the inaugural runningofThe Commonwealth Cup,bringing thenumber of Group 1races at the meeting to eight. The race has quicklyestablished itself as afeatureofthe week and in 2019 it wasthe joint-highest rated three-year-old race in the world.

2016 sawTepin land The Queen Anne Stakes for Mark Casse, whofollowed in thefootsteps of compatriotWesleyWardasanAmerican RoyalAscot-winning trainer

In 2017,the VillageEnclosurewas opened to great acclaim, the firstnew enclosureatthe RoyalMeeting for 100 years.Returning this year after the covid-19 pandemic, it provides a unique perspective being located on the inside of the track looking back towards thefinal furlong withAscot’s famous Grandstand as a backdrop.

In 2018,prize money topped£7million for the firsttime and this year it is arecord£8.65 million. No race willberun for less than £100,000 and twoGroup 1races –The Prince of Wales’sStakes and The Platinum Jubilee Stakes become RoyalAscot’sfirst£1million races. This has been significant in terms of maintaining the worldwide appeal of the Royal Meeting as it continues to attract the best horses from across the world.

2014 sawanamazing Group 1sprint double for the PowerfamilywithSole Powerwinning TheKing’s Stand Stakesand Slade Power following up in The Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

In recent years, the magnificent Stradivarius hasclaimed three Gold Cupsunder Frankie Dettori who has nowridden morethan 75 RoyalAscotwinners with Palace Pierand Campanelle among hishigh-profilesuccesses lastyear.

Royal Ascot -Race Histories

2.30pm The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

Founded in 1840, the Queen Anne Stakes commemorates the monarch who established racing at Ascotin1711. Run as the Trial Stakes until 1929,the Queen Anne Stakeswas first awarded Group 3statusin1971,becomingGroup 2in1984. The race, attracting Europe’s top older milers, achieved the highest three-year average rating of any Group 2race in Britain from 1999 to 2002 according to the then International Classifications and was elevated to Group 1status accordingly in 2003. Run as the opening race of the week since 2008 it will once again get the Royal Meeting underway this year.

3.05pm The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)

First run in 1890, the race was named after the ninth Earl of Coventry, Master of the Buckhounds between 1886 and 1892. This is traditionally the first Group contest of the year for juveniles and as aresult attracts some of the very best precocious young horses, forming part of the high-class opening day card. Many top quality horses have won this race before going on to achieve greatness including Canford Cliffs, Dawn Approach and Caravaggio since the race was promoted to Group 2status in 2004.

3.40pm The King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

AStand Plate was first run on the round course in 1837, becoming the Royal Stand Plate in 1858. The race was re-named the Queen’s Stand Plate in 1860 for two-year-olds, over the sprint distance of four furlongs, finally becoming the King’s Stand Plate in 1901. Today the race remains a sprint, although now run over the minimum trip of five furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards. In 2008 it was promoted to Group 1. The 2019 renewal was officially the highest-quality sprint race in the world with arating of 120.25 after Blue Point and Battaash fought out the finish.

4.20pm The St James’s Palace Stakes (Grou.p 1) (British Champions Series)

Named after the Tudor Royal residence, the inaugural running of the St James’s Palace Stakes in 1834 was awalkover for the Derby winner Plenipotentiary. This race features the best male milers from the Classic generation, often attracting horses that have run in the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. Frankel, Kingman and Circus Maximus are recent superstars to have won the race while the 2020 renewal was particularly memorable, producing the race of the week as Palace Pier defeated Pinatubo and Wichita in athrilling finish.

5.00pm The Ascot Stakes (Handicap)

First run in 1839, the Ascot Stakes is run over two-and-a-half miles. Like the Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, this race provides athoroughtest of stamina.Itisone of just fourraces at theRoyal Meeting in which thefield passes the winning post twice. As wellas attracting somehigh-classhorses from the Jumps sphere, the race normally features horses that will go on to runinthe major staying handicaps throughout the season including the Northumberland Plate and the Ebor.

5.35pm

The Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race)

First run in 2002 as part of the five-day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, this is aListed race over 10 furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards, having been aListed Handicap until 2017.

6.10pm

The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)

Staged over amile and three quarters, the Copper Horse Stakes was one of the six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020. Open to four-year-olds and upwards, Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to the race’s name to be included and it now forms part of the permanentlyexpanded programme. It is inspired by the magnificent statue of King George III–mounted on horseback –which marks the end of the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. The inaugural running was won by Fujaira Prince who went on to win the Ebor at York and was then second in the Group 1Irish St. Leger and third in the British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.

Celebrating the success of Lester Piggott at Royal Ascot

Lester Piggott passed away in Maythis year at the ageof86. In Ascot’sthree-hundred-plus-year history no jockey has dominated the RoyalMeeting likehim. His tallyof116 RoyalAscotwinners stands alone in the modern era, atotal that is unlikelytobesurpassed and one that came at atime when the meeting wasjustfour days long.

Piggott’s firstRoyal Ascotvictory came in 1952 on Malka’sBoy for trainer Walter Nightingall in the Wokingham Stakes.‘The Long Fellow’ went on to be associated with some of the greatesthorses to have graced RoyalAscot.

He wonthe Gold Cup arecord11times,including athen-recordthree-times on Sagaroin1975, 1976and 1977,one on boardLeMoss and abrace with Ardross in 1981 and 1982.

In modern history, healso remains the mostsuccessful jockey in the King’s Stand Stakes, RoyalHuntCup,Norfolk Stakes, Coronation Stakesand Platinum JubileeStakes (formerlythe Corkand Orrery Stakes). His sevenwinners in the King’sStandStakes included three for Vincent O’Brien in the 1970s as well as one of the leading post-warsprinters,Right Boy, in 1957 who he subsequentlypartnered to victory in the 1958 and 1959 Cork and Orrery Stakes. Of those 116 winners, herode 18 apiece for trainers Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. The Coventry can produce an occasional shock result but the betting is usuallya good guide and this year’s market principals look strong, with PERSIAN FORCEthe pick. This imposing son of the 2016 runner-up Mehmas has impressed with his professionalism in winning both his starts and it’shigh praise indeed that his trainer RichardHannon has made comparisons with the stable’ssuperb 2009 winner CanfordCliffs. There’salso infectious confidence behind Blackbeard’sbid to provide Aidan O’Brien with atenth success in the race, and it’seasytosee whyafter such ataking displayatthe Curragh. Of those at greater odds,Harry Time, Rousing Encoreand Scholarship all merit asecond look.

Race Summary: Howlucky it is for us that connections of the twohighest-ranked sprinters in the world, Nature Strip and Golden Pal, have taken the very popular decision to bring them over from Australia and the United States for what promises to be avintageKing’s Stand. The main hope is that they will do themselvesjustice but this is notaneasytrack for afront-running sprinter and Golden Palmay justhave to give waytoNatureStrip, who can be ridden anyway, inthe closing stages They arenot the onlyones to consider, though, as MAN OF PROMISE looked out of the top drawerhimself when winning at Meydan in March and he is afascinating prospect dropped to 5f. King’s Lynn can provehimself abetter horse herethan elsewhereand he has realistic hopes of improving considerablyonlastyear’s unlucky seventh. Twilight Calls, who ran so well behind the latter at Haydock, also has asqueak.

Charlie Appleby has enjoyed aremarkable season so far and will be hoping to add further Group 1 success with Coroebus in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Alightly-raced potential superstar for Godolphin, Coroebus landed the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and will be looking to enhance the fine record of those who have run in the Guineas ahead of the royal meeting. Renewing rivalries with Coroebus from Newmarket are Berkshire Shadow, Lusail, Light Infantry and Checkandchallenge, with the first-named finishing best of the quartet in fifth for Andrew Balding at amassive price of 80/1, but still has five lengths to find on the winner.

The now-retired Poetic Flare bolted home for the Bolger/Manning partnership last year and will be hoping history can repeat itself with Wexford Native.Heran ablinder in the Irish 2,000 Guineas to finish fourth, while New Energy could be one to keep on side after his second in the same Classic. Aidan O’Brien is the leading trainer in the St James’s Palace with eight wins to his name and has the final runner from overseas with Aikhal, who hasn’t been seen since getting denied by Angel Bleu in the Criterium International in France. The unbeaten Maljoom makes plenty of appeal on paper, landing the German 2,000 Guineas, but Tom Marquand seems to prefer his stablemate My Prospero.Following his success over the highly respected Reach For The Moon in the Heron Stakes at Sandown, he could be akey player to try and turn over the odds-on favourite. Bayside Boy had asolid juvenile campaign and also defeated Reach For The Moon in aGroup 2atDoncaster, before going on to place in the Dewhurst and Futurity Trophy Stakes. Frankie Dettori gets the leg up on Mighty Ulysses, who still looks on the upward curve for John and Thady Gosden and could also play apart in the finish, if improving again.

Race Summary:

Willie Mullins has proved time and time again that he can choose the right candidate for this race, so his Bring On The Night has to be the starting point for calculations.Gordon Elliott tries to pull off the same trick with Pied Piper, who is among several other notable hurdlers in this field. John Queallyhas avastlysmaller string but his Irish challenger ARCADIAN SUNRISE (nap) has already proved himself in competitive staying handicaps on the Flat, as well as over hurdles, and today’sextra distance can help him turn tables on the highlyrespected Coltrane who wasjustahead of him in the Chester Cup.That maywell be good enough to win, as they arethe top twoonthe list. MakeMyDay is very interesting among those at longer odds, with Golden Flame and lastyear’s winner Reshoun also requiring amention.

Reserves At RoyalAscot

The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.

This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.

Up to three reserves can replace non-runnersany time up to 1.00pm the day beforethe race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the nationalmedia and bookmakershave to prepare markets in the full knowledgeof the fields at this stage.

Each reserve horse is givenanumber and adraw at the 48-hour stage.Inthe event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawnhorse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers goingupto33although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.

Today’s race with areserve running is The Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)Danehill Kodiac

Horse Welfare at Royal Ascot

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeysisparamount at RoyalAscot. In recent yearsseveral major changes have been made to the racecourseto improve welfare standards.

During the redevelopment between 2004-2006,asafer race track wascreated by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossing over the track, replacing them with underpasses

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a£700,000 project to create anew enhanced unsaddling area in 2016.Increased in size to accommodate largefield races more comfortably, the Unsaddling EnclosureLawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crownofanadjacent maturetreeas well as arepositioned tuliptree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

The Flat course pop-up irrigation system underwent a£150,000 overhaul in 2017.

All 300 of the pop ups around the track were replaced and anew filter system fitted to the pump station delivering amoreefficient watering system.

Five specificallyqualified equine vets areon duty everyday at RoyalAscot, dedicated to the welfareofall the horses.During each race, vets followthe runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generallywithin aminute –asfastasthe paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

Thereare three equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for anyincidents involving injuries to jockeys. Aseriouslytight Listed race in which ahostcan be givenachance. JUAN ELCANO won this second time up lastseason and might be capable of repeating the feat. FoxesTales (second choice), who also wonatthis meeting lastyear, finished in front of the selection at Sandown in April and had lack of stamina as aplausible excuse for aslightlybelow-par run at Newbury, sohe could pose amajor threat if the outside stall isn’ttoo troublesome.
