Let the race begin!
Dr. Peter FitzGerald CBE FREng DL Randox Managing Director
Welcome to Aintree Racecourse for day two of the Randox Grand National Festival – Ladies Day. An occasion synonymous with Liverpool, we are thrilled to have you with us for what promises to be an unforgettable day of world-class sport, stunning fashion, and incredible entertainment.
Yesterday we were treated to some exceptional performances on the track, and today promises even more excitement, with the feature race over the Grand National fences The Randox Supporting Prostate Cancer UK Topham Handicap Chase, taking place at 4:05pm.
While the afternoon is sure to be jam-packed with action on the track, today is also special for our annual Style Award Competition as part of Ladies Day. We are delighted to once again partner with River Island as our Official Style Partners for this year’s event. The Style Awards Competition kicks off at 10.30am, with racegoers able to enter by having their photograph taken by our official team and completing the competition form. You have until 2pm to enter, with the winner being announced at 3.10pm on the DJ Platform in the Red Rum Garden. With some fantastic prizes up for grabs, we wish you all the very best of luck!
Earlier today, several top jockeys from across the UK and Ireland visited Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for our annual Jockey Visit. This is always a heartwarming event, and we are deeply grateful for the continued support from the jockeys who give their time to brighten the day of the children and families at the hospital. Neptune Collonges, winner of the 2012 Grand National, was also in attendance, bringing smiles to the faces of the children. Our relationship with Alder Hey spans over two decades, and it’s a partnership we are incredibly proud of
From 12.40pm, a Punter’s Panel will take place in the Winner’s Enclosure, so make sure you head over to get your tips for the day from a team of racing experts. Straight afterwards at 12.55pm, the annual Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) display will take place, with a line-up of old favourites all coming to Aintree to strut their stuff in the Parade Ring. Among others, Kemboy, Melon and Duke of Navan will be in attendance, and we’d like to give a special shoutout to Top Wood, who will be making his last public appearance with Jasean Spraggett in this year’s parade
This afternoon, former Pussycat Doll and DJ Kimberly Wyatt will set the Red Rum Garden alight with her high-energy electrifying set. Once racing wraps up Glitterbox Resident Fat Tony will take the stage, cranking up the vibe and keeping the celebrations going strong.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all of the sponsors of today’s card. Firstly, we’d like to extend our gratitude to Randox, our headline sponsor It is a pleasure to work with them, and we are incredibly appreciative of their continued support. We’d also like to thank Huyton Asphalt, William Hill, TrustATrader, My Pension Expert, Oddschecker and Hallgarten and Novum Wines for their sponsorship of races throughout the day.
We would also like to thank all of our hugely valued racegoers who are here today. For now, we wish you all a truly memorable day with us and look forward to welcoming you back again very soon.

DON'T MISS THE PARADE OF FORMER RACEHORSES
12.55 - 13.15pm THIS AFTERNOON IN THE PARADE RING!
Join us at the parade ring on Friday 4 April at 12.55pm to 1.15pm before the first race for the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade. This inspiring showcase highlights the versatility of former racehorses and the many paths they can take beyond racing. Thanks to the work of RoR – the official charity of British horseracing, dedicated to the welfare of retired racehorses –these horses are given the support they need to thrive in their lives after racing.
Today's parade features 12 remarkable horses, each with their own story. Many are former champions who have excelled on the racecourse, while others have found new success in disciplines like dressage, showing, eventing, and more. No matter their size, shape, or ability, all these horses are thriving in active, fulfilling second careers.
At RoR, our mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of all former racehorses, helping them find new purpose and loving homes once they retire from racing. We provide education and support to owners of former racehorses, ensure traceability through our membership, and offer a welfare safety net for those horses facing difficult circumstances.
To stimulate demand within the wider equestrian market, RoR stages a number of competition series annually across various disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. For more information visit www.ror.org.uk

'To win' is for your horse to come first.
'Each-way' is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It's two bets, so '£2 each-way' = £4 total bet.

Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day.
Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race This is your chance to see the horses up-close Look for signs of their fitness and attitude A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good.
Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.
Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength.
Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes.
On average, Jump horses race - or 'travel' - at 30mph.
Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race
At 12.30pm today, we will be presenting the third Rose Paterson Community Award in memory of our late Chairman. The winner this year is Becky Easton of the LFC Foundation, here is her nomination in full:
Becky is a huge part of our Women’s football both in participation and support. As representatives of the Liverpool FC and LFC Foundation 'Red Neighbours' team are on the ground in the local community, Becky is key figure in the support we offer in Merseyside With Becky’s contribution it became clear to us early on that her heart not only belongs to football but also to the people
In a short space of time, Becky has had a huge and very positive impact upon our diverse and needy community. Becky has been a very active supporter in all Red Neighbours community events such as Breakfast Clubs for local families, Women’s Walking Football to improve physical activity, environmental volunteering and life changing inspirational chats with local groups and schools.
Sharing her personal journey of working a full-time job in the NHS for 18 years, while training of an evening or any moment she could find to show she had what it takes, has inspired so many women and girls in paving the way to believe that one day, they could be playing on a pitch as prestigious and Anfield or at the top of their very own game in life.
Along-side the support she gives to our communities and her charity work, Becky is an extremely motivational, kind and positive human being who has a genuine heart for people and their wellbeing. Always making herself available and going the extra mile, doing all she can to help Women, the community and our grassroots support grow
We are always and forever grateful.

Named after the course which the race is ran on, the Mildmay, this contest was first ran in 1981 A race for those who contested the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase (the Broadway) at the Cheltenham Festival, this test is ideal for those three mile chasers looking to gain more experience before taking the step into open company next season First ran as a Grade 1 in 2014, Might Bite and Chantry House have both completed the Cheltenham-Aintree double
Landing a gamble in the Kim Muir last March, Inothewayurthinkin took the step up to Grade 1 company in his stride to follow-up just a month later. He wasn't the most fluent over his fences yet again but was able to unleash his customary strong finish after being last of the six-strong field heading into the home straight He picked up like a flash when asked to win the race, just like in this season's Gold Cup, having to be switched wide under Mark Walsh. He finished the strongest to defy owner-mate Iroko by four lengths, giving J P McManus a 1-2 in the Mildmay

This two and a half mile handicap hurdle is always a competitive contest and is one of the only intermediate trip handicap hurdles. Many trainers target this due to the favourable trip, with novices holding a particularly strong record thanks to the lateness it is staged in the season With a big field, horses with good tactical speed are able to excel and it is always a highly competitive race.
Harry and Dan Skelton landed the prize in 2022 with the recently retired Langer Dan, and they recorded another success 2 years later with Kateira. Given a patient ride by Harry, the pair were more than happy to watch the race play out in front of them, in what can only be described as a thrilling finish. They began to creep into the race gradually and soon found themselves at the front after the long-time leader Inthewaterside ran out of steam to eventually finish third. This left Kateira and Jango Baie to fight out the finish but the Skelton's prevailed by two lengths.

This Ladies Day at the Randox Grand National festival, Tony Collier will be proudly representing Prostate Cancer UK and helping deliver a lifesaving message to fans visiting Aintree this year.
“Hearing about my prostate cancer diagnosis almost eight years ago was a shattering experience Prostate cancer was scarcely on my radar. It changed my life. You immediately ask so many questions, like will I be able to walk my daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, or see my grandson grow up? The following days and months were horrendous, with so many dark moments. I was terrified of what the future held.”
“Working with Prostate Cancer UK, and with the support of friends, loved ones and the local community, including my football club Altrincham FC, has been so important as I started to adapt to my life-changing news To hear the Ladies Day title race, the Topham Chase, has been dedicated to the charity to raise awareness of prostate cancer is fantastic. And it’s an honour to represent Prostate Cancer UK together with my wife Tracey, who has been an immense support to me since my diagnosis. I’ve enjoyed so many amazing moments in the past eight years, and I carry with me a renewed purpose to make a difference for men, like me, and their families. Hopefully, Ladies Day at the Randox Grand National is another of those special days.”
Prostate Cancer UK’s presence at one of the biggest sporting occasions of the year will raise vital awareness about the most common cancer in England. 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, and the risk doubles for Black men. The good news is the earlier you find prostate cancer, the easier it is to treat. With thousands of racegoers attending Aintree Racecourse and millions watching worldwide, this collaboration provides a powerful platform to support Prostate Cancer UK’s mission to give every man the power to navigate prostate cancer, and give them the information to make the next step.
No jumps. No hurdles. Three questions and 30 seconds is all it takes to find out your risk of prostate cancer.

Another Grade 1 with a rich history, the Melling Chase was added to the racing calendar in 1991, with Grade 1 status handed for it's inaugural running Named after the nearby village of Melling, situated on the famous Melling Road which crosses the racecourse, this is for many the feature race of the meeting Another event over the intermediate trip of two miles and four furlongs, the likes of Don Cossack, Finian's Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre feature on the roll of honour
GRADE 1
Nicky Henderosn saddled superstar Jonbon in hope of his redemption after being overturned at 1-4 in the re-arranged Clerence House Jack Kennedy opted for new fron-running tactics on the 2022 Irish Gold Cup winner Conflated who saw a positive reaction at the age of 10 He got the better of the Ryainair Chase winner Protektorat who was let down by a few early errors. However, the eye was always drawn to Jonbon who had stamina to prove upped to two and a half miles for the first time Even though this turned into a true test for the distance, his jumping was by far the best of this strong line-up to make it 3-3 at Aintree, proving the doubters wrong.

2025 marks the centenary of Double Chance’s victory in the Grand National. Bred for the Flat in 1916 at the de Rothschilds’ Southcote Stud near Leighton Buzzard, the chestnut’s ancestry was questionable, being out of Kelibia, though his sire was given as "either Roi Herode or Day Comet".
Like so many previous winners, his was an unlikely story on paper Having shown little promise on the racecourse he was consequently gifted by his owner Captain Anthony de Rothschild to an ex-trooper, Frederick Archer, with whom he had served during World War I, and who was just starting out on a training career at Malton. Archer was the nephew of legendary Flat jockey Fred and grandson of William who had won the 1858 Grand National on Little Charley. He hunted Double Chance and, recognising he had a flair for jumping, won two minor races with him before the horse broke down twice with leg problems. Archer then moved from Yorkshire to Newmarket together with Double Chance who, after a successful firing operation, won five more ‘chases.
Shortly before the 1925 Grand National, Archer sold a half-share in Double Chance to Liverpool cotton broker David Goold in whose colours he made his first and only appearance at Aintree, winning by four lengths at 100/9, beating no fewer than four past or future National winners and also that year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup victor This was the first time
the single-strand starting tape was used in the big race
The man entrusted to partnering Double Chance that day was the amazing Major John ("Jack")
Philip Wilson DSC The 35-year-old Yorkshireman had played First Class cricket for his home county as well as having served with bravery and dedication in the Royal Naval Air Service throughout the First World War He flew in airships, bombed German submarines and in June 1915 was responsible for destroying a Zeppelin at night on its base in Belgium when he negotiated fog and, by judicious use of his pocket lamp, fooled the anti-aircraft batteries into thinking he was friendly
He received the Distinguished Service Cross by order of the King and retired with the rank of Major in 1919, after which - despite a life expectancy given as only six months - became a well-known amateur jockey, riding over 100 winners and competing three times in the Grand National.
Fred Archer had particular affection for Double Chance and left clear instructions in his Will for the horse to be cared for by fellow trainer Jack Colling, who duly kept him for the rest of his days and reported him to have a mind of his own and to particularly dislike being clipped. He made a public appearance at Olympia’s 1925 London Food Exhibition and, until a few years ago, the Malton Brewery produced ‘Double Chance’ - their premium best-selling ale - named after the Grand National winner who was once humbly stabled behind the village’s Crown Hotel, locally known as Suddaby’s.
To celebrate the centenary, Jack Wilson’s grandsons and some of his grandchildren are attending the Aintree Festival this year
The second of three races run over the famous Grand National fences, the Topham is staged over almost half the distance of the Randox Grand National Always Waining landed his race for three successive years from 2010 to 2012, with Ultragold winning back to back renewals in 2017 and 2018 This race is always a tough ask, so it's not a surprise to see that horses with plenty of previous experience over the fences fare the best
Winning his last two starts in dominating fashion, Arizona Cardinal showed he wasn't finished improving to land the Topham Completing a remarkable hat-trick, he took well to the Grand National fences and was giving an excellent ride by Ciaran Gethings who always kept his mount prominent. It looked as though Paul Townend looked to have the job wrapped up, being 2 lengths clear at the Elbow, but the winner stayed on tenaciously to reel in his rival at the line. The first three home were all ridden positively but Celebre d'Allen was the one who stayed on best of the rest of those rid dent patiently to just get denied a podium medal by a short head

This race is one for the stayers, with plenty of previous winners going on to achieve great things over longer trips and over fences. First ran in 1988, the race rose through the Graded ranks to achieve Grade 1 status in 1995, with Morgan's Harbour becoming the first winner of the race as a Grade 1. This is one race at the meeting where 'fresh' horses go well, so keep a keen eye open on the ones who didn't run in March. However, if looking at the Cheltenham Festival, Albert Bartlett form is often a good starting point

CALIFET EN VOL finished with a notable late flourish to come out on top over an inadequate test in the Sidney Banks at Huntingdon and, with his previous second to The New Lion reading extremely well in light of that one’s Cheltenham Festival exploits, Nicky Henderson’s 6-y-o makes plenty of appeal now stepping up to 3m. THE HALLGARTEN AND NOVUM WINES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS' AND AMATEUR RIDERS' RACE)
A two mile and half a furlong handicap hurdle, this race is a chance for the Amateur and Conditional riders to shine. The likes of Jamie Codd, David Mullins and David Bass have all won this previously. Always ran at a furious pace, hold up horses fare well in these kinds of races. Previously rounding off the Festival on Saturday, this race has switched place in recent years to finish off Ladies Day in style.
Our finale on the second day was concluded by the biggest priced winner of the Festival, as El Jefe returned a surprise winner at 40/1 Rounding off a fifth win of the season, 7lb claimer Ben Smith used his incredibly low weight to his advantage. Looking like tailing off four out (albeit his rider was still sitting against him) and 14 lengths down at the back of the field taking three out, it was a remarkable effort from the young rider. Switched down the inside and coming from a mile of the pace, he swept through to land the spoils, fending off Ballee and Afadil
