1. FORM
EXPERT VIEW
A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.
How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
Look out for Letters: C D CD BF
= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite
MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r
= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified
d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION
Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and Ibs) 12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 13. Horse’s owner 14. Horse’s breeder 15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB)
BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

TRAINER: DAN SKELTON JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON OWNER: DARREN & ANNALEY YATES The 2022 renewal saw Ashtown Lad land another big prize for his connections with a stellar performance over the Grand National fences at the first time of asking. Steering a wide course under Harry Skelton, this well-handicapped sort was found in the market before the off and eventually sent off second favourite. Always travelling powerfully down the outside, he began his charge for the frontrunners three from home. The eight-year-old responded with immediate effect under the Skelton drive to lead approaching the last and asserted his dominance when touching down to score by two and a quarter lengths. Recent Grand Sefton winner Gesskille was unable to justify favouritism and had to settle for second, while Percussion picked up third a further three lengths and is back for redemption today.

KEY CONTENDERS ASHTOWN LAD
A fabulous display at the first time of asking over the Grand National fences when winning this race 12 months ago, Ashtown Lad bids to add his name to the history books for the Skelton team of dual-winners. He jumped with bags of conviction last year and albeit taking the wide track, he still showed he was levels above his opposition. The Grand National trip proved a stretch of his stamina in April but he looks a solid contender here.
HHHHH
COKO BEACH Gordon Elliot sends just the sole representative to the Becher Chase this year in Coko Beach. A recent surprise 20/1 winner of the Grade 3 Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan, Coko Beach confirmed he still maintains a lot of ability Subsequently raised 9lb for that two and a quarter length win on the soft/heavy going, he still seems to be improving and the beautiful grey could shine bright in this field.
PERCUSSION
HHHH
Following an excellent third 12 months ago, Laura Morgan bids to go two places better this year and saddles Percussion once again. He showed these fences hold no terror over him by finishing second and third in the previous two renewals of the Grand Sefton so he can go well once again.
HHHH CHAMBARD Kim Muir winner Chambard has shown much improved form since stepping up to staying distances and Venetia’s veteran was unlucky to run into a well-handicapped sort at Cheltenham last time out. He has been far from disgraced in other efforts over 3m+ too and has shown his best form on soft going. He could be worthy off an each-way chance at a bigger price.

SIXTH RACE
Following a lengthy absence, HIGHLAND HUNTER shaped with plenty of promise when runner-up at Kelso 6 weeks ago. With the forecast rain very much in his favour, he’s given the nod to confirm the promise of that run now. Last year’s winner Ashtown Lad was below his best on return but this has likely PLAY SMARTER been on his agenda for a while and better can be expected. Last month’s Grand Sefton runner-up Percussion, Undersupervision and potentially well-treated Now Where Or When complete the shortlist.

PARADE RING ACCESS In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
PHOTOGRAPHY Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human
and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Aintree Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

DECLARED RUNNERS 10 2022: QUICK WAVE (FR) 9 11 12 Charlie Deutsch 11-2 (Venetia Williams) 11 ran Blinkers worn by No. 5. Tongue Strap worn by No. 7, 8. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 1, 3, 7, 10. Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No. 9. Stewards Note: RAPPER: Following its run on 28/10/2023 it was reported that the horse had an irregular heartbeat. BOLDMERE: Following its run on 29/10/2023 it was reported that the horse was hampered by a faller. BROKEN HALO: Following its run on 29/4/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered post-race heat stress. Probable S.P’s: 10-3 Fontaine Collonges (FR), 4-1 Beauport (IRE), 7-1 Broken Halo (GB), 15-2 Certainly Red (GB), 10-1 Truckers Lodge (IRE), 11-1 Cyclop (IRE), 14-1 Fortescue (GB), 18-1 Boldmere (GB), 22-1 Rapper (GB), 33-1 Coeur Serein (IRE) The vote goes to CERTAINLY RED, a likeable type who should strip fitter following his reappearance spin at Wincanton and shapes as though well worth another try over a marathon trip such as this. The fact that he has winning form here is another plus point. Beauport hasn’t PLAY SMARTER gone on as hoped since his successful chase debut last term, but he’s edged down to a dangerous mark and is feared most ahead of Fontaine Collonges and Truckers Lodge.
