Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) and The Jockey Club are bringing together the excitement of horse racing and educational demonstrations on retraining former racehorses for showjumping, eventing and other jumping disciplines.

The RoR demonstration is scheduled to take place before racing at 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Aintree Equestrian International Centre. Entry to the RoR demonstration is entirely free for racegoers, providing attendees with a fantastic opportunity to gain insights into the retraining process for former racehorses and to appreciate the skills involved in this transformative journey.

1. Definitly Red - Star chaser with a tremendous CV, winning the Many Clouds Chase twice, the Cotswold Chase, Charlie Hall Chase and the Grimthorpe, and his final win in Kelso’s Premier Chase in 2020, he won 15 times from 38 starts and finished sixth in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup and ran in the Aintree Grand National for Brian Ellison when owned by Phil and Julie Martin. Was ridden and looked after at home

by Ellison’s travelling head lad Andrew Robertson way back when he arrived at the stable in late 2014, Andy is now enjoying retraining Red in his retirement from racing.

2. St John’s Square - 9yo gelding by Milan. Ran over hurdles for owner/breeder JP McManus and is now enjoying a career eventing with owner Lizzie Lea. 3. Bryn Telescope - Previously trained by Peter Bowen in West Wales. He ran four times in two bumpers and two hurdle races, but unsuccessfully! He is a five-year-old gelding, by Telescope. Louise Harwood bought him at the beginning of September straight out of the field where he had been having a break since his last race on 21st December 2022. He has a lovely temperament and is so willing to learn. He has been to two combined training shows, a couple of show jumping shows and a morning autumn hunting. He is being produced towards being an eventer next year.

4. Cogryhill - 13 yo last raced under rules in Ireland 2018, point to pointed with owner/rider Bella Higham since. Also hunted team chased and done some Eventing BE90’s since finishing pointing last year. Won 2 from 3 ROR showing classes this year qualifying for the Tattersall’s championship at Hickstead and the London International Horse show in December.

THE COURSE IS FOR HORSES

In the event of abandonment before racing, or up to the ‘Weighed-In’ of the first race there will be a full refund of admission and car parking costs.

In the event of abandonment after the ‘Weighed-In’ of the first race up to the ‘Weighed-In’ of the third race or nominated feature race, whichever is later, there will be a 50% refund of admission and car parking costs. In the event of abandonment thereafter there will be no refunds. No cash refunds to be paid on the day. All refunds to be administered after the meeting by post.

Please keep off the track. The track is for horses, their jockeys and stable staff, please keep them and yourselves safe by remaining inside the barriers.

Anyone trespassing on the track will be: Liable to arrest and prosecution; Ejected immediately; Banned from all future Aintree race meetings; May face a nationwide racecourse ban.

Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human

and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Aintree Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team.

Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
