THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Hello and welcome back to Aintree Racecourse for another afternoon of quality racing.

We have so much in store for you today, from festive carolling to a racecard packed full of thrilling action The Boylesports Becher Chase Day is one we really look forward to each year and the team and I are delighted to have you all here with us. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Boylesports, for very kindly supporting the whole racecard today. We wish them and their guests a wonderful day with us. Things will get underway this morning at 11.45am, with The Boylesports Best Odds Guaranteed Novices’ Hurdle Race, with the last of today’s runners going to post at 3.15pm. Undoubtedly the highlight of today will be the Boylesports Becher Handicap Steeple Chase, where we will once again get to see some spectacular racing over the iconic Grand National fences.
We also can’t wait to see last season’s Randox Grand National Winner, Noble Yeats, return to the track to run in the Boylesports Many Clouds Chase at 1.30pm, where he is expected to take on the likes of the Nicky Henderson-trained Chantry House and Ahoy Senor for Lucinda Russell. Top-class racing is one thing we are never short of here at Aintree, and another thing you can always be sure of is entertainment and fun for the whole family The much-loved Haydock Band will be out and about providing the perfect musical warm-up to racing, while a choir singing Christmas carols will be located on the Earl of Derby balcony for two hours before racing begins.
Another thing we are really excited about is our brand-new sensory room, which we have been working over the last number of months and will be trialled today before a full roll-out later next year The room is designed to provide a safe space for those who need it most during racing and we hope it will be a great success.
After today it goes without saying that all of our attentions will be well and truly fixed on our next meeting The Randox Grand National Meeting. Taking place from the 13th 15h April 2023, with the Grand National itself being staged on Saturday 15th. Tickets are still available to buy online, and you can find out more by visiting https://www thejockeyclub.co.uk/aintree/
For now, we wish you all a fantastic afternoon with us here at Aintree Racecourse, and I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Warm Wishes,

STRONG LEADER was impressive in bumpers and wasn’t hard pressed to make a successful start over hurdles at Uttoxeter recently With big improvement on the cards, he’s taken to defy a penalty at the likely expense of Etalon, who made a positive start in this sphere in a novice at Warwick. Nollyador was fairly useful in bumpers and should take to this new discipline, so he’s also considered.

Old Victoria, another import from the other side of the Channel, can be expected to leave her Down Royal run well behind and she is second choice. The French connection continues with Galic-raider Isaline de Chandou, who looks the clear pick of the remainder

Nicky Henderson gives the greenlight on the former Turners’ winner Chantry House to return to action and he bolted up by 32 lengths on his only run at Aintree, while Ascot superstar Dashel Drasher also made his first start here a winning one last month and will be looking to add to his already impressive tally

Last season’s Grand National winner Noble Yeats took a Listed contest with ease at Wexford so could be well up for this company, matched by the fast-improving Sounds Russian from the Ruth Jefferson stable who can’t be dismissed either
This race is named in honour of Many Clouds after his victory in 2016.
National Hunt racing by nature breeds heroes, equine and human, who capture a special place in the public’s heart. The legacy of 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds continues to live on as racing returns to the scene of his greatest triumph.

Trevor Hemmings’ third winner of the Grand National (following Hedgehunter and Ballabriggs) was foaled in 2007, by Cloudings out of Bobbing Back. He was trained by Oliver Sherwood and ridden by Leighton Aspell, who partnered him in all his 27 career starts.
He won 12 races worth £927,732 in prize money, completing two Grand Nationals and winning the 2014 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury the only horse to have won both big races in the same season. He was a horse so hugely and warmly acclaimed that practically the whole population of Lambourn, where he was trained, turned out to welcome him home after his outstanding Aintree victory under 11st 9lb His honesty and battling determination were the qualities that made people love him, and these attributes were never displayed more vividly than in his final race, Cheltenham’s Cotswold Chase, in January 2017. That day, Many Clouds literally grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat when fighting back in a duel up the famous hill to overcome the brilliant Thistlecrack but tragically he subsequently passed away He is immortalised in Grand National history, not only on the boards of previous winners, but in the hearts of the public.

Owners Prize Money. 1st £34432, 2nd £14192, 3rd £7096, 4th £3552, 5th £1776, 6th £888. (Penalty Value £45016)

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): N Henderson (9 wins from 33 runners, 27%) runs CHANTRY HOUSE
Longest Traveller: NOBLE YEATS trained by E Mullins, Ireland.
AHOY SENOR proved a big disappointment in the Charlie Hall but Lucinda Russell’s most imposing 7-y-o is well worth another chance to confirm himself one of the top staying chasers around by bouncing back to winning ways here. Ruth Jefferson’s upwardly-mobile Sounds Russian takes a step up in grade but is still feared most ahead of Grand National hero Noble Yeats and the likeable Dashel Drasher in a fascinating contest.

The nine-year-old set a relentless gallop out front, after taking the lead after the sixth, and jumped with conviction at each of the Grand National fences to prove she could be a player for the big one in April.
Up 5lb from her previous success and back up in trip, she proved she was a true stayer when battling all the way to the line to fend off the late surge from the Sandy Thomson-trained Hill Sixteen. The pair pulled a further 16 lengths clear of the third-placed Checkitout, who ran with credit to finish third.
The mare subsequently went on to win again at Exeter, before contesting the Grand National, albeit pulled up after the 16th fence, but could still be one to follow again this season.

ASHTOWN LAD
The Skelton’s have been in flying form all season and Ashtown Lad could be beautifully placed here. Although tackling the Grand National fences for the first time, he stayed on promisingly here on his return to action over hurdles, suggesting that this extra two furlongs could be within reach. He proved a very smart novice chaser last season, which could be backed up today.
SNOW LEOPARDESS
History seems to have a case of repeating itself in this contest and Charie Longsdon’s mare could be up for the task again. She bowled out in front last year under Aidan Coleman and with the champion jockey taking over in the saddle, she could prove very hard to oppose Her prep run for this race was cut very short however, pulling up after the first, which would the only concern.
FIVE STAR GETAWAY
Following the trends, Five Star Getaway must come out near the top. He is one of only 5 horses in this year’s field to carry under 11 stone and has the age on his side only being 8-years-old. He finished just fourteenth in the Topham last year but could prove a whole lot better for the experience over the Grand National fences. The longer trip looks to be a bonus too.

HILL SIXTEEN
Last year’s runner-up in the race Hill Sixteen must be worth a mention once again for the Sandy Thompson stable He ran a blinder in this last year and has continued to run with credit ever since. The third in a hot race at Kelso behind Russian Ruler and Aye Right was nothing but creditable and is a proven stayer unlike some others. 9lb higher than last year’s effort would be the slight worry
CAPTAIN KANGAROO
Willie Mullins sends two candidates overseas to conquer this premier handicap. Captain Kangaroo is the best option to side with, looking all the better stepping up in trip last time out over 3m 4f The ground was soft/ heavy on the day, however, and if the heavens open, he could be a serious player for the champion trainer.

GESSKILLE took really well to these fences when narrowly denied in the Grand Sefton and is taken to go one better now stepping back up in trip The Dan Skelton stable has notched big chase wins on the last 2 weekends and Ashtown Lad heads the dangers on the back of a solid reappearance run over hurdles. Dr Kananga, another who should be sharper for a recent spin over hurdles, likely has more to offer over fences and is also on the shortlist along with last year’s runner-up Hill Sixteen.

Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Riders Onthe Storm (IRE), 7-1 Brave Seasca (FR), 8-1 Gunsight Ridge (GB), 9-1 Knight In Dubai (IRE), 11-1 Kiltealy Briggs (IRE), Cooper’s Cross (IRE), 12-1 Elvis Mail (FR), 14-1 Clan Legend (GB), 18-1 Wishing And Hoping (IRE), 20-1 Empire Steel (IRE), 22-1 Kap Auteuil (FR), 25-1 Schiehallion Munro (GB), 33-1 Handsworth (IRE)

A high-class chaser in his pomp, RIDERS ONTHE STORM capitalised on his much-reduced mark under an excellent ride to land the Old Roan Chase (strong form) on return. Consistency hasn’t always been his strong suit but a 2lb higher mark certainly doesn’t look prohibitive if arriving in the same groove and he could be worth siding with to enhance his already sound C&D record Improving 7-y-o Cooper’s Cross, Brave Seasca and Irish-raider Handsworth head up the dangers.

WALKING ON AIR found his relative inexperience catching him out in Grade 1 company here at the National Meeting but he’d looked a most exciting prospect when successful on hurdles bow at Newbury previously and he could be worth siding with to get back on track now handicapping on return. Foster’sisland, who arrives on the back of a smashing second at Wetherby, Harbour Lake, back at 2 1/2m, and Langer Dan head up the dangers in the finale

PLAY SMARTER
There should be more to come from BRIDGE NORTH now stepping back up to 3m so he gets the vote for the Henry Daly team. Halo des Obeaux saw it out well under gruelling conditions over 2 1/2m here last time and could also benefit from this longer distance so he’s feared most. Sirobbie is also of interest now setting out for new trainer Ian Williams, particularly if the betting vibes are strong.
BONUS SCHEME
After getting off the mark at Warwick on his previous start, Edwardstone arrived in fine form for the Alan King team.

Tom Cannon was happy for Harry Skelton and Third Time Lucki to get on with things out in front and he positioned Edwardstone in behind the leader
Third Time Lucki made sure they went an honest pace but his early exertions and over exuberance at his fences soon bought him back into the grasp of Edwardstone. He cruised into the lead coming into the turn and quickly put the race to bed once Tom asked for his effort. It was a fine effort in what would turn into a memorable season.

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Aintree Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
