BECHER CHASE DAY SAT 4 DECEMBER TICKETS FROM £20 THEJOCKEYCLUB.CO.UK/AINTREE

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

We are delighted to welcome you back to Aintree Racecourse for our new season. This is a fantastic time of year as the Jump season begins to pick up pace and we all look to the months ahead with great excitement and anticipation. It is wonderful to be able to welcome you all back through the gates. While we were honoured to witness incredible moments last year with Rachael Blackmore making history as the first female jockey to win the Randox Grand National, it just wasn’t the same without you all there to welcome her back to the Winners’ Enclosure in true Liverpool style. Today we have an exciting seven race card on offer for Jewson’s Countryside Day, which begins with the ever-popular Charity Race in aid of the Countryside Alliance. We wish all the riders the best of luck and congratulate them on raising a fantastic sum of money for the Countryside Alliance. This is always a special day as we celebrate a number of Countryside Activities from the Lamb National to pony rides, the Red Rum Lawn will be buzzing with complimentary entertainment throughout the afternoon. A moment not to miss will be a Q&A with Hannah, the Red Shepherdess, who is a first-generation farmer who had never stepped foot on a farm until after her degree. A truly fascinating story and well worth dropping by to learn more about Hannah. As I am sure many of you will be aware, Aintree and racing lost a true friend earlier this month. The great Trevor Hemmings sadly passed away aged 86. Trevor was affectionately known to many as “Mr Aintree” due to his love for this racecourse, the Grand National and our sport in the North West. Trevor will be hugely missed by us all and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time. Our thanks go to today’s sponsors Jewson. We thank them for their support and wish them, and their guests, a wonderful day with us. We wish you all a very enjoyable day’s racing and look forward to seeing you back at Aintree on Saturday 6th November. NICHOLAS WRIGLEY

ANNIE MANIA

Annie Mania, who hunts with the Berwickshire where in the past she whipped in to husband Ryan has two children aged one and three, packs an enormous amount into her day. After she has ridden out several lots for her stepfather Sandy Thomson every morning, Annie runs her own company producing a delightful range of embroidered bags and other items littlebagcompany.com which she operates from home. Annie who will be riding her own horse in the race has experienced passing the winning post in front when she won the hunt race at her home point to point. She has an excellent tutor in husband Ryan who she says is responsible for her riding in this year’s race.

AMY MORGAN Amy Morgan hunts with the Heythrop but grew up in the former Vale of Aylesbury (her mother, Jane Vowles is master of the Kimblewick). Amy works for a firm of land agent looking after farms and estates and in addition she is an organiser of The Cotswold cup, a hugely popular series of unaffiliated horse trials which take place at 6 different venues culminating in a Championship at Gatcombe. Amy has been riding out at Ben Pauling’s yard and has been focusing on her fitness in preparation for Aintree. Her 5 year old son Henry will be coming to Aintree with his Grandparents to cheer Mum on.

HELEN WESTMORLAND-NICHOLSON Helen Westmorland-Nicholson is a personal fitness trainer and lives in the Lakes with husband Michael who hunts the Coniston. Helen has a gym on the farm where she looks after patients recovering from serious illness as well as more professional fell and marathon runners. Helen loves her eventing but has taken time to recover from a serious fall competing a year ago and this race has been a target for her to get back to full riding fitness. However, she has proved that she has done exactly that, emerging from the fitness test undertaken by all our jockeys with top marks.

ARTHUR OWEN Arthur Owen is racing secretary and handles owner communication for Trainer Tom Dascombe. He took on the role in May and was previously working for Hazelwood Bloodstock where he was involved in prepping yearlings for the sales. Arthur has spent time in Australia working in Bloodstock Management, but despite being heavily involved in the bloodstock industry, being in the driving seat will be quite a change for him.

ELLEN JONES Ellen Jones whips in every Saturday to the Teme Valley following in the footsteps of her mother who whipped in to Roy Savage for many years. In the day time Ellen is training to be an accountant through a wealth management firm. A farmer’s daughter, Ellen will be riding a horse provided by Shelia Lewis where she has been riding out regularly in preparation for this race.

REMEMBERING TREVOR HE

Few people have contributed to Jump racing and loved and supported the Randox Grand National quite like Trevor Hemmings, who sadly passed away aged 86 on October 11th. Hemmings was brought up in Woolwich Arsenal, South-East London, where his father worked at the Royal Ordnance factory. He was sent to Lancashire as a five-year-old during World War II and began his working life as a bricklayer’s apprentice after leaving school aged 15, before becoming involved in the Pontins holiday business. It was during his time working for Pontins that his interest in horseracing and Aintree in particular was sparked, with Sir Fred Pontin owning the 1971 Grand National hero Specify. His success in business eventually saw him become the owner of Pontins, while his myriad of interests over the years included the Blackpool Tower and Winter Gardens, Scottish & Newcastle brewery, Arena Leisure and Preston North End FC, which he rescued from near oblivion in 2010. Hemmings’ love of Aintree and the Grand National is probably best summed up by the fact he has had at least one runner – and often more - in the race every year since the turn of the century. Rubika was his first National runner, finishing 14th in 1992, but his lifetime dream was achieved in 2005 when the Willie Mullins-trained Hedgehunter carried his colours to success at Aintree. Hemmings went on to enjoy another two victories in the world’s greatest steeplechase courtesy of Ballabriggs (2011) and Many Clouds (2015). His three Grand National wins are a joint-record for an owner. Ahead of the 2021 Randox Grand National, Hemmings explained why he loved Aintree and the great race so passionately. He said: “The Grand National is the ultimate in my life as far I am concerned. I built a holiday village next to where Ginger McCain used to bring Red Rum, the beach at Ainsdale. I had to work the weekend Fred won the Grand National and that also captured me - I had to finish the holiday village at Ainsdale and he went off for the weekend and won the Grand National with Specify! “If you look at the Blue Riband, which is the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is probably the ultimate in the UK and you look at the Grand National which is worldwide - it’s the Wembley of all of racing. That’s why I cherish Liverpool and that wonderful few days you can have in Grand National week. “My most precious moment is winning the Grand National (with Hedgehunter in 2005) in what I call the old stadium – the previous winner’s enclosure to the one used today. The history of all that had happened before was still in that winner’s enclosure - that area where the horses were brought in to.

EMMINGS CVO 1935 – 2021 “I was there with Willie and Jackie Mullins, his father Paddy and mother Maureen and his son Patrick, who we know now as a grown mature jockey, but was a kid back then. I will remember the passion of everybody.” Cheltenham was also a happy hunting ground for Hemmings, where his 12 winners at The Festival were headed by dual Ryanair Chase winner Albertas Run. His most recent Festival success came in March of this year courtesy of Vintage Clouds in the Ultima Handicap Chase. Away from racing he was a philanthropist to the core and was chairman of the TJH Foundation, a charity which makes grants to organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Relief, St John Ambulance, Crimestoppers Trust, Royal National Lifeboat Association, the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Racing Welfare. In 2011 he was appointed a Commander of the Victorian Order (CVO) for his work as vice-president of the Princess Royal Trust Carers. Hemmings, who was made an honorary Jockey Club member in December 2006, was based on the Isle of Man. He also owned a number of eventers who were ridden by Zara Phillips and she rode the Hemmings-owned High Kingdom (nicknamed “Trev”) when winning team silver in the three-day eventing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Dickon White, The Jockey Club’s Regional Director for the North West, said: “All of us at The Jockey Club were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Trevor Hemmings. “His passion for Jump racing was unrivalled and his support for the Randox Grand National was second to none. It was hugely satisfying for everyone to see his support rewarded with a joint-record third Grand National winner six years ago and it is no exaggeration to say that it is due to Trevor’s passion that the great race’s profile remains as high as ever. “His support of Jump racing went far beyond one race, however, and he was also a major supporter of Haydock Park, where he also enjoyed significant success and was a regular attendee over the years. All our thoughts are with his family and friends today as the new Jump season at Aintree gets underway.”

Several in with a chance but it could pay to side with BLACK OP. Tom George’s charge was unable to make a splash in graded events last season but, having showed up well for a long way in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on his penultimate start, he’s taken to make his first go in a veterans’ chase a winning one. Last year’s winner Minellacelebration rates as the main danger, ahead of Captain Chaos.

A win for the North last time around as the gallant Nuts Well provided trainer Ann Hamilton and hubandowner Ian, cattle farmers from Northumberland, with a first win at Graded level. The Dylan Thomas gelding defied top weight and odds of 18/1 to score under Danny McMenamin, who punched the air with delight shortly after crossing the line. Connections will be hoping for a repeat performance this afternoon, with their ten-year-old having already landed the same prep race at Kelso that he took en route to victory here 12 months ago.

A competitive renewal despite the relatively small field with the vote in favour of Paul Nicholls’ TAMAROC DU MATHAN. Clearly not himself at Ayr in the spring, he had previously looked one to keep firmly onside, landing the Grade 2 Pendil at Kempton in February, and he can go well. Grade 1 winning novice Allmankind shaped well over hurdles on return and is feared, ahead of Killer Clown.

Today’s Old Roan Chase is named after three-time winner of the race, Monet’s Garden. It was evident very early on in Monet’s Garden’s career that he had the potential to become a National Hunt legend, claiming 17 race wins, including several Grade 2 crowns, and notching up victories across the country from Ascot to Perth, Carlisle to Huntingdon. He proved to be a versatile and capable runner, amassing £683,265 in prize money. It was at Aintree, though, where Monet’s Garden truly asserted his dominance, winning three out of his four attempts at the Old Roan Chase with jockeys Sir AP McCoy, Dougie Costello and Tony Dobbin on board. A premature retirement awaited the triumphant grey, with illness cutting short a career which, no doubt, would have gone on to include further honours. In 2016, Monet’s Garden won the Retraining of Racehorses Veteran Final at the RoR National Championship Show in front of a packed audience at Aintree’s International Equestrian Centre. In November 2018, the hugely popular chaser, loved for his flamboyant jumping, died at the age of 20 – he will always be remembered as a much loved Aintree legend. 25

PLAY SMARTER

POUNDING POET takes a step up in grade, yet he could hardly have been more impressive when supplementing his breakthrough Southwell success at Warwick in May and an 8lb rise shouldn’t prevent a bold bid to complete the hat-trick for his in-form yard on return. Mackelduff, a winner himself at Southwell in the spring, is interesting now handicapping, along with Winningseverything.

CORACH RAMBLER looked a dour stayer when making it 2-3 over hurdles at Carlisle earlier in the year and there was definite promise to glean from his reappearance/ chase debut third over a trip on the short side at Perth last month. Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Aintree Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Parade Ring Access In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

Photography Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. Flash photography is not permitted anywhere in the Parade Ring or Winner’s Enclosure areas, or anywhere in the close vicinity of horses.
