HERITAGE CONTINUES… INTRODUCING THE 2022 CORAL GOLD CUP

It gives me great pleasure to be writing to you as we approach a new era in the history of one of the most historic races in the jumps calendar.

Under a new commercial relationship between Newbury Racecourse and Entain Group, Coral has become the title sponsor of the two-day Coral Gold Cup Meeting and its highlight the Coral Gold Cup, previously known as the Hennessy Gold Cup and more recently the Ladbrokes Trophy.

As a result the ‘Gold Cup’ has been restored to the race title of the £250,000 showpiece and a new perpetual trophy created for the winning owner. The new link strengthens Coral’s portfolio of sponsored races and betting partnerships and cements its position as the longest-standing and most committed sponsor in British Racing with the fixture becoming one of the brand’s flagship sponsorships, sitting alongside The Coral-Eclipse, Coral Welsh Grand National and Coral Scottish Grand National.

Coral has entered into a partnership with a race which has an illustrious history with a roll of honour comprising some of the biggest names in jumping, such as Arkle, Burrough Hill Lad, One Man, Denman, Many Clouds and Native River, and has continued to deliver compelling storylines. The narrative for last year’s race centred on Cloth Cap’s bid to repeat his success of 2020 and deliver a poignant triumph for owner Trevor Hemmings, a huge supporter of jumps racing who passed away in October.

Glen, trained by Venetia Williams, defeated Fiddlerontheroof to pull off a 33-1 success. It was the Hemmings family’s fourth win in the race following Cloth Cap in 2020, Many Clouds (2015) and Trabolgan (2005).

At Newbury, preparations are well underway for this year’s fixture with over £700,000 in prizemoney will be on offer with Friday’s highlight the £60,000 Coral Long Distance Hurdle providing the appetiser to the £250,000 Coral Gold Cup on Saturday.

On Tuesday 15 November we will once again be hosting our annual gallops morning which is open to trainers with potential runners across the two days of the Coral Gold Cup Meeting, so please save the date in your diaries.

Once again we will be offering a travel allowance for any overseas runners, details of which are outlined on the adjacent pages along with the conditions of all races and a breakdown of prizemoney.

Airport transfers will be provided for any connections with overseas runners who are declared to run on either Friday 25 November or Saturday 26 November 2022.

BADGE ALLOCATION: We offer six badges for every runner in single ownership and ten badges for syndicates/partnerships, which can be collected from either the official Owners Club VIP entrance, located in Car Park 2 or the Owners & Trainers entrance in Car Park 4. Additional badges can be purchased for half price.

OWNERS AND TRAINERS FACILITIES: We are delighted to welcome owners back to the Coral Gold Cup Meeting, for the full experience across the weekend. On arrival, please make your way to the main Owners Club Entrance, located in Car Park 2, where you will be greeted by our staff who will be able to show you around. Up to six lunch vouchers per horse will be issued, which are valid for the restaurant in The Owners Club. Owners with lunch vouchers will be able to enjoy a complimentary two course lunch and it is advisable to book a table in advance.

CORAL has kindly sponsored this race and will present a memento winning owner, trainer, jockey and groom. In addition a Challenge trophy will be awarded to the winning owner, to be returned to Newbury Racecourse by September 30th next year. A best turned out award will also be presented. A cash prize will be awarded to the stable employee responsible for the best turned out horse. The Newbury Racecourse Executive will also pay a sum of £750 for any horse Starting in this race, which has travelled from outside Great Britain with the express purpose of running in this race. All number cloths to be carried in this race have been sponsored and will carry the name/logo of Coral. The sponsorship payment of £500 will be distributed equally amongst all horses starting in this race in accordance with paragraphs 24 to 27 of the Stakes and Prize Money Code. This race will be restricted to 24 runners plus two reserves. The two reserves will be nominated as R25 and R26. The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed 'Reserves' which has been published in The Racing Calendar and which also appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Internet site www.racingadmin.co.uk. The British Horseracing Authority will amend paragraphs 34 to 38 of the Weights and Handicapping Code and paragraphs 62 to 65 of the Race Entry Code in the event that raising of the weights

at the 24 hour stage proves necessary. Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The British Horseracing Authority will modify the Rules of Racing as a consequence of providing two reserves for the Ladbrokes Trophy Steeple Chase (Handicap). The penalty referred to in Rule (F)96 will be waived for any horse which is deemed a non-runner by 1.00 p.m. on the day before the race. The British Horseracing Authority has modified paragraph 6 of the Weights and Hand icapping Code for the purposes of this race, such that racecourse performances up to and including Sunday, October 30th, 2022, may be taken into account. The British Horseracing Authority has also modified the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entry Code and the Division of Races section of the Race Administration Code for the purposes of this race.
