GEORGE’S COLUMN THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT, THE FUTURE IS FEMALE! Racing has moved a long way from when I started as a kid in 1985, but along with a lot of commentators, I fear we are still behind the curve in many ways. I still hear phrases such as “oh that’s just racing for you” as though racing has its own set of laws and standards. It doesn’t, it must abide by the same standards as the rest of the UK, other sports, and sectors.

But it is still all too common for male staff to “banter” female staff, all too often that banter is sexual discrimination and/or harassment and wouldn’t be acceptable in any other workplace or public place for that matter.

A simple rule of thumb is if you wouldn’t say it to a stranger in public don’t say it to your female work colleagues. The reason I bring this up is because if trainers don’t address this fewer female will want to remain and we already have a staff shortage, when did we not? However, the newer staff that are coming into racing are predominately female.

in 2021 he spoke to 208 students of which 153 were female and 55 were male. That means 73% of those joining the industry are females!

This is where trainers as employers need to get up to speed, to recognise that our workforce will be mainly female within a few years. The workforce is currently 52% female and 48% male, it was more 80/20 in favour of men when I started. In the years to come that will be completely reversed, yet I am unaware of a single yard that has enhanced maternity pay, or anything in place for women in racing who want to start (or currently) have a family.

We do have mums working around the normal training yard hours, but little in the way of any policy or strategy. With retention a big issue in racing employers need to start looking at proactive ways of retaining skilled female workers. If that means flexible working hours (not every day needs to start at 6am or earlier) or a contribution to childminding then so be it, but to do nothing is to sleepwalk into a staff crisis at a time when we are already stretched.

MEET GEORGIE EDGECOMBE, THE NEW NARS OFFICE MANAGER I have been working in the NARS office for four months now, it has been extremely enlightening to be able to see racing from another angle and from a staff perspective. Until this role within NARS I had no idea the number of issues that staff within racing faced daily, it has been a real eye opener and is a rewarding role knowing you are helping those who give so much of their lives to this industry.

At fifteen I joined a point-to-point yard based outside Newmarket at the weekends, then once in college I worked as many days as I could in the yard alongside studying in Forensic Science & Law. On the completion of this I became a full-time member of

I am looking forward to continuing to work for NARS and help the staff throughout the industry navigate the issues they may encounter. I hope that with all the work the NARS team do that we can make the relevant changes, lift up the industry and bring positivity to a workforce that dedicate so much of their lives to a sport we all love.

NARS LONDON MEETING On Tuesday 30th November both the Executive Committee and the Racecourse Inspectors met in a joint meeting to discuss all relevant topics.

At the meeting we were also joined by the BHA Chief Executive Julie Harrington.

Julie came for a scheduled slot, and was with us far longer than anticipated, listening to all of the views of those around the table from a staff’s perspective, on a variety of topics. It was a very productive meeting between her and those representing NARS and we look forward to working with her in both the short and long term.

Facilities at racecourses was the major topic of discussion with her, and we discussed at length how progress with setting and maintaining standards across the country could be achieved. We also discussed Pool Money and how it could be monitored better, and how repeat offenders not carrying out the correct process could be investigated by the BHA. The whole meeting began with a presentation from the BHA Safeguarding team on racecourse regulations from that perspective, what they are trying to achieve, and how it mirrors our own goals. The collective goal of NARS and the BHA safeguarding team is that everybody staying overnight at a racecourse should have their own individual room with en-suite bathroom. This would be the same expectation as anyone going away with work would do in this century, not sharing a room with a stranger, or even someone you do know.

This was carried on by the great discussion with Julie Harrington. Next up we discussed the racecourse reports and previous scoring, how we started to where we have got to, and how we can continue improving on what we have done, this was followed on by the RCA report on staff accommodation at racecourses.

The RCA report was a great in-depth report covering overnight facilities for racing staff at racecourses, disappointingly 11 courses chose not to participate in, covering what facilities each racecourse has in place, do they have single rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and lastly what it would take to achieve this.

This was a great look into our standing on each course’s list of priorities as well as in their business plan.

Following on from this it was then agreed that all Racecourse Inspections would commence once again in 2022, each course gets inspected twice a year and at the end of the year the inspectors will once again score each course for our end of year ratings chart.

The meeting then moved on to the official Executive Committee meeting. This started off following up on points with updates from the previous meeting, covering various topics such as; • Sunday Racing payments • Road Crossings • Newsletter • Exit Interviews • Sports Days • Sunday Racing Then it was a presentation on the NARS Education programme, the numbers, its progress, and the courses currently running. The courses in planning and the development of the online learning, both on the Racing2learn platform and the work in conjunction with West Suffolk College to provide courses online to all nationally, as well as the projects funding for the future.

Next was a discussion about the fixture list and racing on Sunday’s, always a huge debate around the table, whilst the understanding of Sunday’s being an entertainment day in the sport we represent, the work/life balance is also a huge issue with retaining staff in the industry, the job can be a relentless one, and as in most yards having just one Sunday off every two weeks, if you did have to go racing on that day off it is then four weeks between your Sunday’s off.

The AGM was next up for discussion, reviewing the previous one in Newmarket 2021 and plans for 2022. This followed on with a look at roles for committee members and who would be interested in a various specific role, from heading up pool money to traffic officer. This is going to be covered in more detail at the next meeting.

RACECOURSE INSPECTIONS The NARS appointed racecourse inspectors will re-commence their racecourse inspections in January 2022 The last 22 months have been very difficult on all of us, but apart from 78 days, racing has not stopped its relentless race program.

Initially this meant no canteen’s, even covered areas were initially frowned upon by many local environment health officers, thankfully common sense prevailed and although there were many occasions when the staff had to return to a horsebox for shelter gradually our day racing looked a bit more normal.

However, it was obvious some standards had slipped and without the RCIs it was very difficult to address them. Covid certainly played a part as racecourses struggled with staff themselves, but it was also all too often used as a scapegoat.

Nottingham and Redcar were the worst places to find yourself racing, basics such as hand sanitizer and wash facilities seemed beyond them, or at least to much trouble to concern themselves about.

So, I am looking forward to the RCIs tackling racecourse facilities again in 2022, covering the four specific areas of Overnight Facilities, Day Facilities, Canteen and Stables, from bedrooms to water pressure, advising each course on areas of improvement and following up on progress on each report. From their first report published in the racing post, to their second one a year later, we saw racecourses improve by a huge 81%. But due to covid we had to stop the reports, how do you rate a canteen that’s closed? The reports can be found on our website.

LYCETT’S TEAM CHAMPION

WRITTEN BY KEVIN PARSONS This year’s Team Champion award was pretty much back to normal (having been an online version due to covid last year) and once again a fantastic initiative that NARS fully support. I was lucky enough to have been asked to be part of the judging panel since its first year, and from a staff perspective it has been excellent to be a part of.

There were a few slight tweaks to the awards this year. Firstly, it was opened to all yards in one overall award, in the past it has been in two categories, large yards and small yards, in previous years the smaller yards (who originally thought they wouldn’t be able to compete with the big yards) had regularly scored higher points than those bigger yards.

This also saw the four individual areas of the written submission have awards for each area themselves, whilst many yards are exceptional in certain areas this was a great addition to reward those with ‘Excellence awards’ for these and they were generously sponsored by George Smith Horseboxes.

The Overall award was changed to the ‘Leadership award’, for the trainer that the judges felt was the best across all four excellence categories. This was a slight change to the original Team Champion award and saw a shortlist of six trainers put forward from the various excellence categories and all received yard visits from the judges before the winner was decided.

The ‘Team Champion’ award was tweaked, where the team itself could enter, via written submission or video. This was an opportunity for the team themselves to tell the judges why they are the best team, and for a chance to win the prize money to share between them, this saw a few entries whittled down before a shortlist was drawn up. Zoom calls were done with a selection of team members to be quizzed by the judges before selecting the winner.

The addition of the Farm and Stable sponsored award in ‘Innovation and Well Being’ was also good to recognise those going further than most

in looking after their team and was judged by the sponsor themselves.

These awards have been excellent for us at NARS and the industry, to see over the years since its inception the best practice going on out there, those that go above and beyond in caring for, developing, and rewarding their staff.

NARS GOLF Due to the current circumstances, we were unable to hold our usual golf series of three qualifying events and a final, it was decided that we would try and get a one-off event in, open to all.

With The Warwickshire again our venue for the event, a place that looks after us so well and a stunning venue with two excellent courses, it was the Kings Course that would test our golfers on a mild September Tuesday.

Once again thanks must go to Morrish Solicitors and Newmarket Financial Solutions who sponsor the event, and this year saw Ollie McPhail of Racing to School take the honours with 41 points on the day, with Marc Halford and Kieran Watson both running him close on 39 points each.

With prizes again for the nearest the pins on the par 3’s these were won by Chris Durham, Jack Findlater, Marc Halford and Jody Mogford. The longest drive of the day went to Aaron Rid. OR MORE PRECISELY, YOUR DATA AS STORED BY WETHERBY’S FOR THE BHA. When you start your employment in a racing yard you are asked to fill out a form called the SER1, stable employee register.

What happens on a regular basis is that a racing secretary will fill out the form for you but put in the yards email and phone number, that then makes it impossible for anyone to communicate with you other than through your employer. One employer even put himself down as next of kin, and he most definitely wasn’t!! Even then the SER does not ask enough detail to understand its own workforce.

When our education project was funded by Union Learn, the government funded company, we had to collect (as contracted to receive the funding) the standard information as well as gender, ethnicity, highest qualification level, Is English your first language as well as do you consider yourself to have a disability, physical, hidden or a learning difficulty. And believe me we as a workforce do have disabilities, some of us aren’t even aware of them, but by not even having the chance to register any qualifications, abilities, or disabilities on the SER1 from we are lumped as one into a huge melting pot of over 7,000 people, with no qualifications, which is ridiculous.

We are a professional work force and many among us have ridden winners, many of us have both academic and practical qualifications such as holding a HGV licence, a Jockeys licence, have studied before coming into racing (one secretary at NARS was a qualified nurse but preferred to work in racing). Hundreds if not thousands of you have been to the British Racing School or the

National Horseracing College on other courses, from work rider to trainers’ courses, secretary to senior staff courses. And virtually all of you will have taken the online Covid questionnaire to access the racecourse. Yet none of this is recorded on your employment records.

This saw us change our own membership forms to include all the information we had to collect; our own database also saw us collect all learning data from anyone taking part on learning with us.

This means our own database on our members is far more comprehensive than any information the BHA hold on those that work in the industry.

Therefore, NARS has been developing our own database, working with a company called beech Design and having signed an agreement with the BHA to merge the stable employee register (that we had access to anyway) with our own every month, for an even more in depth and more importantly, up to date database.

Having also linked with dot digital a communications company this will allow us to send you various communications such as racecourse reports from a staff and equine welfare point of view, newsletters, information on any upcoming ballots for regional committees, Executive Committee places and even the position of Chief Executive. You will start to receive more communications directly from NARS about what we are doing on your behalf, how and why, rather than through a newsletter via your office that in some cases we know of were binned first rather than given out.

Things like letting the staff know about covid protocols, which racecourses are providing a meal free of charge, 42 now, and the 17 that we are still working on. Information on best turned-out prizes and bonuses such as the one at Warwick where it is possible for the staff of one yard to win £10,000 between them. And of course, the National Joint Council which negotiates wages, terms, and conditions with the NTF. We are a modern, talented workforce and I look forward to engaging with you on a modern and regular basis going forward.

GREAT BRITISH RACING British Horseracing’s ‘Racing is Everyone’s Sport’ campaign showcased support for Stonewall’s annual Rainbow Laces campaign in December. The campaign invited everyone to show support to demonstrate that everyone, regardless of their sexuality, should feel welcome within sport and to emphasise racing’s inclusiveness to all groups.

On Saturday, December 4 the industry showed support of Racing’s LGBT+ community at Sandown, Aintree, Chepstow, Wolverhampton and Wetherby racecourses. Anyone on the racecourse had the opportunity to show their support by wearing a rainbow armband or rainbow pin badge. Jockeys wore a rainbow armband for one race at each fixture.

Great British Racing would like to thank everyone for their support and look forward to it being bigger and better in 2022.

Rainbow saddle cloths, kindly organised by sponsors the Kindred group (through its Unibet brand), Betfair and Betway, were worn for a number of races across the day, including the Betfair Tingle Creek at Sandown, the Unibet Bechers Chase at Aintree and The Betway Handicap stakes at Wolverhampton.

NARS EDUCATION PROGRAMME We are most pleased to have been up and running with face-to-face learning again, (for how long though, who knows?) with classes back on in Newmarket at The Racing Centre, this has seen us running once again our courses in ESOL, Maths, Mentoring, Leadership and Team Skills course as well as the launch of our newest and exciting Equine Photography course.

Our work with West Suffolk College and the team there has seen us be able to offer many different courses for staff, these now include online courses for staff based anywhere across the country, all at no cost to you!

original advertisement of the course, we could have filled it three times over, and those first to sign up, completed the places. With much interest from around the country, we are looking to progress this elsewhere after this successful pilot.

The launch of the padlet, our online hub in conjunction with West Suffolk College is full of information of what is on offer and how to sign up. These online courses are live and we have already had nine people sign up for some of the courses and are underway gaining further experience and qualifications to help them in their own development.

Firstly, the courses wouldn’t have been possible to have even begun if it wasn’t for the generosity and help from Canon, with a delay in the cameras and lens’ we had ordered from them originally, (due to Brexit/Covid) it was through their education department they were able to loan us some very high-quality equipment, for all students to use on the course until our own order was fulfilled.

Having launched the Equine Photography course in September with West Suffolk College it has been far better than anticipated. From the

We were every keen to make sure we had cameras and lens’ available so any staff member working in the industry could take part, whether you had your own camera or not, and a huge thanks must also go out to the Racing Foundation who sponsored the equipment and course.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE WRITTEN BY DOMINIQUE TORTICE

At the beginning of the year, we sent out a survey monkey to gather feedback on courses that could be provided by NEP, which the staff are interested in. It transpired that there was a great interest in a photography course.

Kevin and I decided that if we were to have this as an offering to staff, we wanted to make it a bespoke Equine photography course not just a standard photography course, so we sat down with our contacts at West Suffolk College and hashed out the finer details regarding how we wanted the course to look and what we wanted included.

We settled upon a 12-week course, four field days to various industry venues and 8 weeks of classroom sessions, these would include general camera use, lenses, photoshop, editing and much more...

We were sure that we wanted this course to cater for all levels and made sure that was reflected in the course content, one other point we were very clear on was that we did not want this course to cost the participants a penny, including equipment, this was a course that we wanted anyone working in the industry to be able to take part on for free!

The following couple of weeks were spent in the classroom to start looking at Photoshop and the editing process, it was a great opportunity for all the students to start looking at the photos they had taken and discuss where they had gotten it right and wrong with their tutor.

The second field day was to the races at The Rowley Mile, the forecast was dreadful, and the weather didn’t favour the students. They encountered rain, hail, sun, and plenty of cloud but the silver lining was that it meant they were having to learn to adjust on their feet! And this showed with some cracking shots taken by the students.

By this point in the course, it was clear that all the students were really enjoying themselves and learning a great deal, and it was igniting a flame

We had ten participants ready to start in September, a full course, we had worked hard to secure four excellent trips out in the industry and all the equipment was ordered and had arrived.

The first couple of sessions were classroom based, familiarising the students with the cameras and lenses, the third week was our first field day.

It was a freezing but beautiful morning out on Warren Hill gallops in Newmarket, followed by a fantastic visit to James Ferguson’s Saville House Racing Stables. The team at Saville House were incredibly welcoming, the setting was beautiful and some very obliging equine models made the first trip a huge success.

This field day enabled the students to really get a feel for their photography and the difficulties in

in some of them. That was exactly what we were hoping for, some were starting to think about how they could take their skills further once the course had finished.

Social Media and Technology play such a huge part in the industry these days, and with more and more jobs opening within yards relating to Photography and social media, it is giving people more options, and we believe it is important to stay ahead of the curve rather than behind it.

Therefore, it is so important to NARS to develop racing staff to retain them in the industry.

The classroom sessions were so important for the students to learn different lighting and how to adjust their cameras and lenses accordingly, it gave them an opportunity to discuss their concerns with their tutor and to really reflect on where they needed to make changes and improvements when they were out in the field.

The third field day was to The National Stud, on what was a very wet and cold day. It proved to be particularly tricky as a lot of the equine models were hiding from the weather, however this ensured that the students had to get more creative with their surroundings, the setting itself was stunning and many of the students thought outside the box on this trip, which made for some beautiful Autumnal shots.

We thought it would be really beneficial to the students to hear from an industry photograper whilst on the course, we asked Dan Abraham who kindly agreed to spend a couple of hours with them.

Dan is a renound Racing Post photographer and has previously won the HWPA Photographer of

the year. It was a great experience for the participants, Dan talked about how he got started in the industry, his experience and went through some of his award winning photography on the projector with them. Having an experienced industry guest speaker definitely encouraged the students to consider where their enjoyment in photography, particularly equine might take them.

The fourth and final field day for the students was to Tattersalls Foal Sales, it was bitterly cold but beautifully crisp. The group were split in to two and by this stage of the course were feeling much more confident in their skills, this enabled them to seek out the shots they were looking for but still have the guidance of the tutor should they need advice.

The last few weeks of the course were again classroom based, this was where the students were fine tuning their work. There were thousands of photos taken during the course and the students needed to short list their favourites and edit them in any way they felt would improve the shot.

The course ended with the most amazing student feedback, inspired budding photographers and a very happy NEP team.

Whilst the course was not accredited with a formal qualification, it was a practical skills course which we will be celebrating with an exhibition on the 10th February.

The students will have a portfolio of six photos form which they will choose their favourite image, and there will be a competition for the best overall photo and the best portfolio,

these will be judged at the event and there will be prizes for the winners.

From NARS perspective this course was the first of its kind in the industry and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how it went, it created an opportunity for ten participants to learn a new skill, for many of them ignited a new found passion and has created ten budding new photograpers whos specialty is Horseracing!

NARS will be holding the Photography exhibition alongside our Education awards at The Racing Centre in Newmarket on the 10th February, this event will be open to the industry.
