A very warm welcome to YorkMix Family Sunday with a record prize fund of £240,000 on offer for our seven thoroughbred races with the featuring race being the £70,000 Listed Starman at Tally Ho Stud Garrowby Stakes, at 4pm. It is a very special raceday for all the generations at York Racecourse, full of racing ponies, thoroughbred racehorses, mechanical racehorses, retired racehorses, meerkats, snakes, tortoises and one very famous Aussie pup! I hope you and your family thoroughly enjoy your day.
In terms of the attractions on offer today, I hope you can find time to visit the Racing Interactive Zone, Sublime Science Show or to see Bluey, both set in the picturesque surroundings of the new Bustardthorpe Development so under the Churchill Tyres Canopy. Thankfully, also weather proofed, there is yet more entertainment based in our Entertainment Marquee in the middle of the course; Joe’s animal encounters, Meltdown and Diggerland, are just part of the fun and entirely free. For more details of all the extra entertainment today see pages 6-9
A tip for County Stand Badgeholders is to watch the action from the Dante Suite on the second floor of the Ebor Stand; it has viewing seats as well as a bar, tote, toilets and more seating inside A further tip for all racegoers in the middle of the course – do come over to stand side and enjoy seeing the horses in the Parade Ring and all that is on offer in the wider stands and lawns.– just cross by the thatched head on box or by the wind sock (please leave your picnic in the left luggage facility).
A big thank you to all the younger listeners who entered the “Design a racecard cover” competition with YorkMix. Well done to Elsie Littlewood, aged 6, on her winning entry! Do visit the YorkMix website later this week to catch up on all the photos from today.
There are 96 declared runners vying for the honours, amongst them we have some top-class horses and jockeys racing, made possible by both your support and the backing of the YorkMix, our partners and sponsors. We are delighted to welcome a three-time British Champion Jockey, Oisin Murphy, back to the Knavesmire today; a few more winners and the 2024 title will be all but sealed.
The record value of our feature race has been rewarded with an interesting field of a dozen top-quality sprinters, one with proven York Pattern Race pedigree is Azure Blue who has already won at Group 2 level on the Knavesmire for Darlington based trainer, Michael Dods. Whilst Quinault a victor in the big Macmillan Charity Raceday sprint last year, is now looking to make it three Listed Race wins on the spin, having travelled up the A1, from Stuart William’s Newmarket base Rage Of Bamby always runs a good race at York.
Prior to the thoroughbred racing we are proud to host a leg of the Pony Racing Series, sponsored by Dragon Film Studios. York is delighted to welcome these ponies, young jockeys and their connections to the Knavesmire - who knows maybe they will return one day as professional pilots. The Bowen brothers, Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand (riding here today) are among previous graduates. You can bet on the outcome and I hope that you will enjoy the extra sport.
Appropriate to a family raceday, there is an added story to our final race, as three siblings from the Easterby clan, William, Emily and Tom race against each other; each of them on a horse from the yard of their father, Tim.
Today forms part of a special week for our sport, National Racehorse Week. I do hope some of you took advantage of the combined admission offer and visited the racing stables around Malton earlier today. Our equine ambassador, Remy, is here so do go and say hello to him whilst discovering the fabulous work of New Beginnings. Remy and his friend Poppy the pony will be making more community visits during this important week and into the autumn.
With the leaves beginning to turn, remember you can follow all the action from major Flat racecourses, such as York as well as the big Jumps meetings at the likes of Cheltenham and Aintree, all on Racing TV Visit their website to see some great deals for joining the thousands of subscribers who already enjoy the action and expert analysis.
As always, our thanks to today’s sponsors, David & Sue Ward, the European Breeders’ Fund, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, PJ Staffing Group, Hanson Springs and the Elevator Company.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of this unique day in our season.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times
is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Non-runner
Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.
Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.
• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.
• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.
• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.
• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.
• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.
We hope you enjoy it.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.
There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 1m
Race Type: Novice
Prize Money: £40,000
Age: 2
Stalls: Inside Rail
We start the day off with a very valuable Novice contest , this race is limited to 2yo horses and is over the distance of a mile.
The boys (colts) start with a higher basic weight than the girls (fillies) which explains the lighter burden for Harswell Ruby as the lone female Any that have had a win already this season have to carry additional (so called penalty) weight, however this year it is level pegging for the boys.
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
Perhaps the advice of our expert panel on the Winner’s Podium at 1.15pm will give you the answer.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
WINDLORD bumped into an exciting juvenile when second over 7f at Sandown and a repeat of that effort would see him difficult to beat. This could be a stepping stone for the son of Dubawi, who has Group entries later on in the campaign, and he can shed his maiden tag. The biggest danger is likely to come in the form of Shah, who has occupied the runner-up berth in his two appearances to date, including in the Convivial here. Newcomer Spirit Of Murray heads the remainder

Now for the first handicap of the day, designed for close competition, the handicapper is an independent assessor who rates horses on their past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
Not all horses like running over the same distance and generally they improve with experience; so, to add a further competitive edge, this race is for 3yo horses only, over the shortest distance in UK racing, just five furlongs. The ratings or handicap band of 71-90 is a further way to help make it an exciting and hard to predict contest.
The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight, Law of Average here. Perhaps take a close-up look in the Parade Ring before they go to post.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The hat-trick seeking Law Of Average arrives in very good heart and should be taken seriously, but a further 9lb hike in the ratings may leave him susceptible to a better-treated rival. A chance is taken on MAKE IT EASY, who was only narrowly touched off from a tricky draw at Chester and this looks a good opportunity to go one better. Nigel Tinkler’s filly has been raised 3lb, which doesn’t appear out of her reach. Cover Point also makes appeal.

CHILDREN At York Racecourse
Baby-Changing facilities are available in a purpose-built facility on the ground floors of both Knavesmire & Ebor stands, as well as near the Parent and Toddler Room and a signed area in the Clocktower Enclosure close to the turnstiles.
There is a wide range of many food and drink options for families and children. From fish ‘n’ chips in the new Roberto Pavilion. To an extensive sandwich selection and lasagne and chips in the County Stand at Eat Between Our Races. We welcome children in our main restaurants, and in the Gimcrack Restaurant we offer a half price option for under 12s covering both lunch and afternoon tea. Wherever you can buy food we also can provide juice for children, with water available from all the bars.
Our Parent and Toddler room, situated opposite the main Ebor Stand entrance in the Library Rooms, allows parents and children in the Stands SIde some quiet time away from the hurly burly of the main raceday atmosphere. A microwave is provided for parents to warm children’s bottles and televisions provide coverage of racing whilst another shows cartoons. Some comfy chairs should help recharge the batteries. A baby changing facility has been added next door to this room.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
YES I’M MALI showed a likeable attitude when running on gamely to claim a nursery over C&D at the Ebor meeting and although he’ll have to defy a 5lb rise, Richard Fahey’s colt should be a tough nut to crack. Brighton Boy didn’t get the run of the race when caught wide and struggling to land a blow over 7f at Glorious Goodwood, and a more straightforward passage could see him to better effect. Mythical Composer is also worthy of consideration on his handicap bow.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
It is way too early to be giving up on the well-bred MARKOON, who was his own worst enemy when pulling too hard on his handicap debut at Newbury The son of Kingman showed tenacity when successful on his two previous starts and, assuming he settles better back over a mile, he can give his trainer back-to-back winners of this race. Class-droppers Apiarist and Marcella offer some each-way value, while Old Cock is two from three in handicaps and also rates a serious contender

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 6f
Race Type: Listed
Prize Money: £70,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Centre
Our richest race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1.
This means it is in the top 300 races in the land.
Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is sharpened by the nuance that horses who have won this season in the top two divisions are excluded. Horses of the same age and sex start with the same weight, meaning Frost At Dawn starts with the lowest amount being the only 3yo filly You can see that difference between an older male contender such as Twilight Calls and a male opponent aged just three, like Night Raider. The top weight, Quinault, carries an additional burden for winning a Listed race at Newmarket earlier in the season.
An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.
LAST YEAR’S RACE
Winner: COMMANCHE FALLS
Trainer: Michael Dods
Jockey: Connor Beasley
Age/Weight: 6-9-9
Runners: 8 SP: 100/30
Our feature race went to Michael Dods and Commanche Falls last year under a strong ride by Connor Beasley. The six-year-old was a comfortable winner in the end after travelling strongly throughout.

Quinault is a strong contender as he bids to complete a hat-trick of Listed wins after admirable efforts at Chester and Newmarket However, the likes of Marine Wave and Rage Of Bamby can also race prominently and this could unfold to suit a closer TWILIGHT CALLS appeals as one who might have the race run to suit and, having not been beaten far in the Hackwood at Newbury last time, he can deliver another sucker punch for a yard that won this race with Limato in 2018. A double for Andrew Balding on Sky Bet Ebor day moved him one clear in the 2024 standings.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 6f
Race Type: Handicap
Rating: 61-80
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 3+
Another ticklish handicap to solve, your key factors are it is for 3yo+ horses over three quarters of a mile (six furlongs).
The opposite way around to golf, the best on past performance, will be the highest rating number (though carrying number one saddlecloth), so will carry most weight; that is Lil Guff today.
Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; see how Abate qualifies on both counts.

MUSCIKA arrives here on the back of two narrow defeats, the first of which came over this C&D in July, and it would be no surprise to see the veteran return to winning ways. Huddle Up has also been running well in defeat of late and could give the selection plenty to think about. Others who make the shortlist are Roundhay Park, Dance And Romance and It Just Takes Time

RACE DESCRIPTION

The key consideration here is the rider, as all of them are still amateurs Connections can gain relief on the weight allocated to their horse, stepped according to the record of the rider So, you need to decide who has got it right, the owners of Young Fire when choosing to give the leg up to Simon Walker, a multiple time Champion Amateur. Or those of Continuance who think the benefit of the 7lb reduction afforded to the less previously successful, Freddie Keighley, will see the partnership home in front; looking at the surname of trainer and rider then family supper won’t be short of conversation either way Nor will it around the Easterby table as three siblings, William, Emily and Tom all compete here.
Could be time for a pin or your favourite colour
However you finish the day, as winner or unlucky loser, do come back and try to win at our Finale on 11th & 12th of next month.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Cases can be made for many of these but marginal preference is for FAST STEPS, who did not appear to get home over 1m4f at Epsom. However, that was still a very respectable effort and his previous second over this trip at Sandown is also strong form. Highwaygrey has made the frame in both starts since winning at Pontefract in July and is likely to be in the mix once again. Others to note are Young Fire, Poet’s Dawn and Glistening Nights.
