A very warm welcome to YorkMix Family Sunday with its feature race at record prize money of £70,000, the Listed BETGOODWIN Garrowby Stakes. It is a very special raceday for all the generations at York Racecourse, full of racing ponies, thoroughbred racehorses, mechanical racehorses, retired racehorses, meerkats, snakes, tortoises and one very famous Aussie pup! I hope you and your family thoroughly enjoy your day.

In terms of the attractions on offer today, I hope you can find time to visit the Racing Interactive Zone or to see Bluey, both set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room and its adjacent Lawn. Thankfully weather proofed, there is yet more entertainment based in our Entertainment Marquee in the middle of the course; Joe’s animal encounters, Meltdown and Diggerland, are just part of the fun and entirely free For more details of all the extra entertainment today see pages 6-7.

A tip for all County Stand Badgeholders is to watch the action from the Dante Suite on the second floor of the Ebor Stand; it has viewing seats as well as a bar, tote, toilets and more seating inside A further tip for all racegoers in the middle of the course – do come over to standside and enjoy seeing the horses in the Parade Ring and all that is on offer in the wider stands and lawns – just cross by the thatched head on box (please leave your picnic in the left luggage facility).

A big thank you to all the younger listeners who entered the “Design a racecard cover” competition with YorkMix. Well done to Elise Littlewood, aged 5, on her winning entry! Do visit the YorkMix website later this week to catch up on all the photos from today.

With prize money for the seven thoroughbred races at a record of more than £200,000 we have 66 declared runners vying for the honours. We have some top-class horses and jockeys racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of the YorkMix, our partners and sponsors. We are delighted to welcome reigning British Champion Jockey, William Buick, back to the Knavesmire today – William is currently also the leading rider on the Knavesmire this season.

The record value of our feature race has been rewarded with an interesting field of nine top-quality sprinters, all of the contenders have won over the six-furlong trip with a number having done so at York. Perhaps most eye-catching is Emaraaty Ana who won the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack of 2018, prior to Group One success at Haydock. Another with Pattern race pedigree is Al Suhail who has already won at Group 2 level in the Godolphin blue Rage of Bamby ran an eye-catching second at last month’s Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

Prior to the thoroughbred racing we are proud to host two legs of the Pony Racing Series, sponsored by Dragon Film Studios. York is delighted to welcome these ponies, young jockeys and their connections to the Knavesmire - who knows maybe they will return one day as professional pilots. The Bowen brothers, Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand are among previous graduates. You can bet on the outcome and I hope that you will enjoy the extra sport.

Our last race is contested by Apprentice riders, many from Yorkshire yards, so it is highly appropriate that it forms part of Go Racing in Yorkshire inspired “Future Stars” Series, which culminates in a Final at Doncaster in November Now in its ninth year, coming into round eight and this race, with 37 points in the bag, Elle-May Croot is just a point ahead of Connor Planas. After a win last time at Thirsk, Sam Feilden is up to fourth on 21 points, so with three races remaining it is all to play for! Sean Kirrane returns to the Knavesmire a little over a fortnight since his debut win at the highest level, when partnering Live In The Dream to Coolmore Nunthorpe success

Whilst today charts a route for future stars, a moment to reflect on the glittering career of jockey Edward Hide, who has passed away this week aged 86. A Yorkshire based rider who won all the British Classics, his success in the 1,000 Guineas aboard Mrs McArdy for Mick Easterby, is fondly remembered in these parts. Also notable for his association with Lochnager, a sprinter who won feature races such as the Nunthorpe Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife of more than 60 years, Sue, his son William and his daughter Lizzie

Today forms part of a special week for our sport, National Racehorse Week. I do hope some of you took advantage of the combined admission offer and visited the racing stables around Malton earlier today. Our equine ambassador, Remy, is here so do go and say hello to him whilst discovering the fabulous work of New Beginnings. Remy and his friend Poppy the pony will be making more community visits during this important week and into the autumn.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of this unique day in our season.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there disabled and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.

Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate.

Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

HERE’S THE PLAN

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for both horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to continue to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus for the next capital project being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

A planning application has been submitted for a £5 million investment to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers.

Subject to approval, work will commence following the October meeting and be open for the busy racedays in the 2024 season.

26
Architect impressions of the planned improvements

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing stand.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston’s Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates and improved accessibility.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Village Bar.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and rainwater harvesting, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Novice

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

We start the day off with a Novice contest , this race is limited to 2yo horses and is over the distance of six furlongs.

The boys (colts) start with a higher basic weight than the girls (fillies) however this is made simple as all the horses in this instance are colts. Any that have had a win already this season have to carry additional (so called penalty) weight which explains the extra burden for Ziggy’s Condor after success at Pontefract.

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

Perhaps the advice of our expert panel on the Winner’s Podium at 1pm will give you the answer.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Just a length separated Ziggy’s Condor (second) and PILGRIM (fourth) in the valuable Goffs UK Harry Beeby Premier Yearling Stakes over course and distance last month. However, the latter is 5lb better off here and that might be enough to see him get off the mark. The Coffee Pod finished a narrow third at Ripon 22 days ago and is likely go well, while the 450,000gns-purchase Bondy, a son of Kingman, is worth a market check ahead of his debut.

About One Mile (1,500 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 76-95

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 3

Stalls: Inside Rail

Now for the first handicap of the day, designed for close competition, the handicapper is an independent assessor who rates horses on their past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

Not all horses like running over the same distance and generally they improve with experience; so, to add a further competitive edge, this race is for 3yo horses only, over one mile. The ratings or handicap band of 76-95 is a further way to help make it an exciting and hard to predict contest.

The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight, Real Gain here. Perhaps take a close-up look in the Parade Ring before they go to post.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Real Gain is open to further progression now he switches to turf after two narrow-margin wins on the all-weather and fits the profile of a colt with a bright future. However, the previous Knavesmire experience held by CATCH THE PADDY earns him the vote. Having finished a close second in the Sky Bet Mile over C&D last month, he can go one place better off just 1lb higher. Bajan Bandit is closely matched with the selection and commands respect, while Harlem Nights is also seriously considered.

CHILDREN At York Racecourse

Baby-Changing facilities are available in a purpose-built facility on the ground floors of both Knavesmire & Ebor stands, as well as near the Parent and Toddler Room and a signed area in the Clocktower Enclosure close to the turnstiles.

There is a wide range of many food and drink options for families and children.

From fish ‘n’ chips and hot dogs at our Good Food to Go outlets in Grandstand & Paddock to an extensive sandwich selection and lasagne and chips in the County Stand at Eat Between Our Races. We welcome children in our main restaurants, and in the Gimcrack Restaurant we offer a half price option for under 12s covering both lunch and afternoon tea. Wherever you can buy food we also can provide juice for children, with water available from all the bars.

Our Parent and Toddler room, situated opposite the main Ebor Stand entrance in the Library Rooms, allows parents and children in the Stands SIde some quiet time away from the hurly burly of the main raceday atmosphere. A microwave is provided for parents to warm children’s bottles and televisions provide coverage of racing whilst another shows cartoons. Some comfy chairs should help recharge the batteries. A baby changing facility has been added next door to this room.

This facility has been generously supported by our local Tesco at Askam Bar.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

YORKINDNESS finished third at Musselburgh when attempting to make it a hat-trick of victories and Charlie Johnston’s filly, who brings the most solid recent level of form to the contest, has been found an ideal opportunity to strike once again. Tendentious is likely to be the main threat following his Redcar success when seeming to benefit from cheekpieces being reapplied, although he was also scheduled to appear at Thirsk on Saturday. Red Force One and Gibside both have something to prove on recent evidence.

A BIG HANDICAP? BRIAN TAYLOR 50

NOT OUT APPRENTICE HANDICAP

This afternoon’s Brian Taylor 50 Not Out Apprentice Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with eighteen closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology.

Narrowing down the field of eighteen declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form.

Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Thunder Moor is rated 85 is considered 1lb “better” than Looking For Lynda who is rated 84. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Thunder Moor should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Thunder Moor carries 1lb more than Looking For Lynda, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fifteen runners – but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all eighteen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance?

Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.

Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

1) FORM

Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Dream For Gold, Wen Moon & Star Of Lady M.

2) THE DRAW

Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Perhaps Profitable Edge can use this to his advantage.

3)

DISTANCE

Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Swift Asset, Looking For Lynda and Dream For Gold have all won over today’s distance

4) GROUND

If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Match Play is one who will enjoy a quicker surface. However Profitable Edge has previously won on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.

5)

YORK RECORD

“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year only two that have won at the course and distance, Pillow Talk and The Thunder Moor are the pair, to have completed the double.

6)

CONCLUSION

Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good to firm’ will be the description, the Mick and David Easterby-trained Miss Brazen might well take advantage of his falling mark on favourable ground. He’s won over the distance before and we all know how much the Easterby’s love to have a York winner!

Due to the competitive nature of today’s handicap, a Tote Trifecta is also suggested: Miss Brazen, Thunder Moor & Match Play.

In an open event, marginal preference is for TROPICAL ISLAND, who was only narrowly denied in a good novice event at Ripon. Now switched to nursery company, Richard Fahey’s filly could be hard to stop off an opening mark of 83. RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Centre

Our richest race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1.

This means it is in the top 300 races in the land.

Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is sharpened by the nuance that horses who have won this season in the top two divisions are excluded. Horses of the same age and sex start with the same weight, however, you can see that difference between an older male contender such as Al Suhail and a female opponent aged just three, like Perdika. Indeed, any three-year-old runners start with a lower weight, notice Desert Cop. The top weight, Commanche Falls, carries an additional burden for winning a Group 3 race at Newbury earlier in the season.

An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race

Our feature race went to Michael Dods and Gale Force Maya last year under a strong ride by Connor Beasley. The experienced mare was a comfortable winner in the end after travelling strongly throughout.

6th Race 4.25

The Hanson Springs 60th Anniversary Stakes

One Mile About Two Furlongs (2,000 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 61-80

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Inside Rail

Another ticklish handicap to solve, your key factors are it is for 3yo+ horses over a mile and a quarter

The opposite way around to golf, the best on past performance, will be the highest number, so Eeetee will carry most weight. Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance; see how Eeetee qualifies on both counts.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: Eeetee

Trainer: David O’Meara

Jockey: Mark Winn

Age/Weight: 4-9-4

Runners: 15 SP: 17/2

Eeetee stalked his rivals from the back of the field before making good headway over two furlongs from home He took up a commanding lead inside the final furlong to win by an impressive three lengths.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 2m 8.10s

Course Record: 2m 5.29s by Sea The Stars (18-Aug-09)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (17-22): T Easterby (29 wins from 487 runners, 6%) runs HIGHWAYGREY and JEWEL MAKER

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Varian (8 wins from 33 runners, 24%) runs MATHEMATICIAN

Weightwatcher: JEWEL MAKER won off a handicap mark of 74, his rating is now down 10lb to 64.

Longest Traveller: MATHEMATICIAN trained by R Varian, Newmarket, 163 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 8th September

KNAVESMIRE TIP

ANJO BONITA appeared to win with something in hand on just her second appearance for Roger Fell and Sean Murray at Hamilton recently The Harry Angel filly is fancied to complete a double off 4lb higher at the expense of Mathematician, who enters the reckoning on the back of his all-weather success at Newcastle last month. A 3lb rise is unlikely to prevent another bold bid, while Highwaygrey and Feel The Need are others to note.

The Brian Taylor 50 Not Out Apprentice Stakes

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 71-90

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 3

Stalls: Centre

A final handicap, the shortest distance in British racing of only five furlongs usually makes for a tight finish.

The key consideration here is the rider, as all of them are still apprentices. Connections can gain relief on the weight allocated to their horse, stepped according to the record of the rider So, you need to decide who has got it right, the owners of Spirit of Applause when choosing the recent Group One winner, Sean Kirrane; or those of Looking For Lynda who think the benefit of the 5lb reduction afforded to the less previously successful, Sam Feilden, will see the partnership home in front

Could be time for a pin or your favourite colour

However, you finish the day as winner or unlucky loser, do come back and try to win at the Saturday 23rd September

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The impressive recent Doncaster winner Squealer could be vulnerable after a 7lb rise in the ratings. Dream For Gold, Brooklyn Nine Nine and Star Of Lady M all have to be of some interest but PILLOW TALK may take some stopping if a first-time visor has the desired effect. Karl Burke’s lightly-raced filly showed up well at a higher level over course and distance last time out and looks more than capable of winning off her current mark.

B g Mehmas (IRE) - Sunny Hollow Jockey: Alex Jary (5)

Trainer: Nigel Tinkler, Malton Form: 000431 CD Breeder: Tally-Ho Stud

He has won three times at 5f on good ground. A winner at 4-1 at Doncaster over 5f (good) on his latest outing last month, beating Bedford Flyer by 2 1/2l. Readily took advantage of a falling mark on that occasion but has shot up 7lb and now has little margin for error

York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
