Welcome to York for the Finale Meeting of our 2022 season. A raceday with seven fascinating races, record prize money, and a market open to all stand side racegoers, located on the ground floor of the Ebor Stand with lots of ideas for Christmas present ideas (see page 46). I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and successful day.
It has been a tremendous year on the track so far, with some of the very best racehorses and jockeys in the world having competed at York and gone on to further glory elsewhere. Whether it was Alpinista winning the Yorkshire Oaks and then the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for Kirsten Rausing and the trainer- jockey combination of Sir Mark Prescott and Luke Morris; or local heroine Highfield Princess landing a Group One sprint double in Yorkshire and Ireland for John Quinn, Jason Hart and owner, John Fairley. You can read a little more about York form as it tracks into autumn on p26-27. The likes of Baaeed, Trawlerman and Quickthorn carry strong Knavesmire runs into QIPCO British Champions Day next weekend. We will then hope to see York form taken to the Breeders’ Cup, Melbourne Cup and possibly Japan Cup in the weeks ahead. I hope you have enjoyed an action-packed season to date and thank you for your support.
The 3.15pm is a brand-new race offering connections of two-year-olds a chance for a £100,000 prize as the British European Breeders’ Fund have backed the final to a valuable series for juveniles. York Racecourse is proud to be staging the inaugural Colts and Geldings Final, which has drawn a suitably strong field. Another horse to have won at the Ebor Festival and then landed a subsequent big prize in Ireland is Streets of Gold, trained by Eve Johnson Houghton. Shouldvebeenaring similarly won a big pot at Ebor and then followed up with Listed success at Ripon. What a race we have in store.
This afternoon’s feature handicap is the £100,000 William Hill backed stayers race for three-year-olds over 14 furlongs. Top weight is Dark Moon Rising for local trainer Kevin Ryan, an early win would help narrow the gap in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship where Hambleton Lodge sit three behind Karl Burke. A strong showing could see connections interested in a return for the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 26 August 2023 over the same trip
The fifth race today celebrates Copper Knight, currently the joint winningmost horse on the Knavesmire in the modern era, alongside Dakota Gold and the recently retired Stradivarius. Since the Denham family first raced their favourite here at York, he has already won on six occasions from twenty starts. Trained by reigning leading trainer at York, Tim Easterby, the first win was on his Knavesmire debut back in May 2017. You can see a plaque in his honour on the pre parade ring side of the Weighing Room, you’ll notice we have just said “winningmost”, as he may well not be done with the six-timer, he runs in his own race today.
The meeting will also see the conclusion of the season long contest to be top jockey at York. In the Living North-sponsored contest, Danny Tudhope and Clifford Lee sit tied on seven winners apiece. It would be a fourth title for the former yet a debut success for Clifford who is engaged at Newmarket in today’s Group One, creating a window of opportunity for Danny. Others will retain hopes that they may mount a late charge. Please see p44 for the story so far.
We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors; William Hill, Parsonage Country House Hotel, the connections of Copper Knight, European Breeders’ Fund and it being a Friday, one final visit for this year from the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing.
Thank you for your support.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing.

York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale.
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
Is there disabled and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row.
Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and tracksideA left-handed track which joins the straight course just under five furlongs from home. Races of seven furlongs start on a spur which joins the main circuit at a tangent after two furlongs.

Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided?
1. Born in 2000, I was crowned Champion Apprentice in 2018. My first major victory came aboard Gifted Master in the Steward’s Cup at Goodwood. Bonus point if you know who trains him. This season I’ve ridden 67 winners, which has included two at York.
2. Sired by Royal Palace, I began my racing career in 1976 and ran twice as a juvenile. I placed twice before being put away for the winter.
I recorded my first win in the Pretty Polly Stakes before taking arguably my biggest victory of all at Epsom in the Oaks. I then took my chances over the Knavesmire but was unsuited by the slower pace and finished third.
Later in the year she tasted more classic success in the St Leger at Doncaster.
1. A hit song for Hue and Cry
2. The spiritual home of Gordon Banks, Pat Jennings, Peter Schmeichel, Dino Zoff
3. An iconic 2009 track by Alicia Keys
4. Home of the novelist, playwright and politician Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton
5. An Australian designer brand or the man considered responsible for driving the USA into World War 1?
6. A lighthouse built in 1806 so understandably now a Listed building
7. The Fighting Quaker, a key lieutenant to George Washington
8. Napoleon famously preferred his Generals, like this man, to be lucky rather than good
9. A US comedy show that has garnered Golden Globes and Emmys aplenty
10. The father of The Little Mermaid
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York.
1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower.
Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.
If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
EACH WAY A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.
Ground The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

See page 77 for conditions of this race.
A new and valuable race, limited just to 2yo colts and geldings who are European Breeders’ Fund eligible This new series seeks to reward those younger horses of real potential who missed out on the usual programme of Pattern races, perhaps due to an niggling injury All the runners have finished in the top six of an extensive programme of Maiden and Novice races backed by the EBF All would start from a 9st weight however previous success adds weight at varying amounts depending on the grade of the race won; that explains the burden carried by three-time winner, Shouldvebeenaring. To add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowerd (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively chealy at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse in from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher Band benefits from an allowance (see Corsican Caper here)

The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his six races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come.
He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb sixth victory came at last year’s Ebor Festival.
A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet!
At this year’s Dante Festival both the Michael Dods trained Dakota Gold and the mighty Stradivarius joined Copper Knight with a record equalling sixth win, will Copper Knight go one better today?
See page 77 for conditions of this race.
Still a handicap, this time for 3yo+ horses over five furlongs.
“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar
Need some help? If you want to talk York form, then Copper Knight has it in spades being the joint winningmost horse here, will today mark a magnificent seven?

Race six is a novice race so limited to 2yos, run over six furlongs. At this stage in their career there is a natural difference between the colts and fillies with the former expected to start from a higher weight to deliver a fair contest. Beyond that, it is level weights, except if you have won already which then generates a weight penalty; see how both Shaquille and Hoof it Hoof it shoulder a heavier burden than their peers.
To encourage the breeding industry and to create competition, it is also limited to horses who’s sire (father) was a stallion whose progeny (children) were bought at one or more sales for a median (average) price depending on what age they were purchased. It means that the market has judged their genes to be of a similar standard, so today may show up a bargain. If you don’t want to concern yourself with that complexity, then it is probably “favourite colours “ time
