SUMMER
THE WILLIAM HILL STAKES (GROUP 3)
Safer Gambling
Take control. Own your game. Gamble responsibly.
Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire, the feature race of the day is a cracking renewal of the Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes – even the forecast weather has managed to match the race title! A dozen flying fillies are declared for this Pattern race worth £80,000. Flotus, trained by the Crisford family, looks set to be the sponsor’s favourite after a fine run in Group One company at Royal Ascot. Richard Fahey, Karl Burke and Kevin Ryan will all be hoping to revive the fine record of Yorkshire yards in this contest. This black type race and three others besides it, mark the great partnership between York and William Hill. It stretches back many years and now celebrates that the Leeds based betting giant plays a key role in the experience for York racegoers by operating the on-course betting shops - do go and meet their friendly team. The six-figure prize money today and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to William Hill, our locally based accountants Azets who return today, as well as Jigsaw Sports Branding who have the course looking so smart this afternoon. We continue to be hugely appreciative of the tremendous backing from our colleagues in the Emerald Isle ahead of Irish Champions Weekend this September and of the European Breeders’ Fund, who now back more than twenty contests here on the Knavesmire. In addition to racing today, we have some tremendous action to look forward to - be that a fascinating card on the 63rd John Smith’s Cup Day tomorrow, the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival culminating in the Sky Bet York Stakes on 23rd July or the Ebor Festival next month. The latter looks set to attract some of the best horses in the world to the Knavesmire, see p32-33 for some more detail. It would be wonderful if you could join us. I do hope you enjoy the racing, the various bands around the racecourse and the array of food and drinks on offer today. I wish you both a good time and a few winners. Thank you for your support this afternoon.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11
A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside 12

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Can you name the horse that won the first race on Friday last year? He’s since gone onto win at Cheltenham!
WHO AM I? Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? 1.
I am one of two horses to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes three times in a row. I enjoyed my success in the 1980’s and was trained by Jeremy Tree. I had a real love for the Knavesmire and soft ground! For some bonus points can you name the years in which I won the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes?
2.
In 2018 I trained the winner of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks; can you name the horse in question? This year I’ve sent 81 winners to the track, amassing over £2 million pounds in prize money. My stable star could well step up in trip and line up in this year’s Juddmonte International.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A B T
There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

AUGUST CALENDAR
With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the
17 Wednesday Things to do:
Win on of the best races in the world
Global superstar Mishriff joined the illustrious roll of honour by winning the 2021 Juddmonte International. This year looks to be another absolute cracker with a plethora of Group 1 winners from across the generations featuring in the early entries. It is a 50/50 split, of Classic generation runners, pitted up against their older, more experienced counterparts. Defending champion Mishriff looks set to return. In his way stands emphatic Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes and Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown. The Sir Michael Stoute trained three-year-old winner ran riot in the Derby and the form has since been franked when Westover decimated his rivals in the Irish version. Both look set to line up on the Knavesmire. Baaeed has already been spoken about as the best miler since Frankel and is currently rated the best horse in the world, it could be one of the greatest renewals we’ve ever had. While there are unanswered questions about his stamina, there are none about his class, which could well see him handle the extra two furlongs. Aidan O’Brien is not without his usual strong contingent and Luxembourg might well be the forgotten one. The once Derby favourite has been out with an injury but if anyone can get him back it’s the master of Ballydoyle. Joining him could be the likes of Stone Age, Point Lonsdale and Epsom Oaks winner Tuesday. John and Thady Gosden are well represented in the entries by the Group One winning pair Nashawa and Inspiral. Finally, how can we forget the Godolphin runners, in the entries is the 2021 Epsom Derby and King George winner Adayar, although not seen this season count him out at your peril. Joining him could be the St. James Palace winner Coroebus. Whatever happens, it will not disappoint!
Become the fifteenth colt to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Cazoo St Leger
Fourteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2022 could see number fifteen. Charlie Appleby was responsible for the 2021 winner Yibir who ineligable to take his place at Doncaster being a gelding but he may be tempted this year should one of his colts win the prize. Walk Of Stars and Nahanni both ran in this year’s Epsom Derby but failed to put their best foot forward. The flatter track should suit them more and should they return to form they will be lively players. Aidan O’Brien’s record speaks for itself and he should once again be well represented. He has no fewer than 10 entries and right at the top of the list is Changingofthegaurd. Fresh from his Ascot win, he looks tailor made for a race like this however does carry a 3lb penalty for that success. Joining him could be the likes of Star Of India, Blue Grass and Aikhal. Francesco Clemente may have slipped under most people’s radars after two low key victories. John and Thady Gosden may well have been keeping this unexposed son of Dubawi for a race like this and he very much falls into the could be anything category.
18 Thursday Things to do:
Second time lucky?
Last year’s second Albaflora is set to return to try and go one better and win the Darley Yorkshire Oaks for Ralph Beckett. In her way are some very talented three-year-old’s, that include the Clarehaven filly Emily Upjohn who has already tasted success once over the Knavesmire in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes. Alpinista was mightily impressive over in France last weekend, it looks as though she may be aimed at a tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, so a summer break could loom. The William Haggas trained Lilac Road hasn’t been seen since her brilliant victory in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Fillies’ Stakes. She sprang a bit of a surprise for the Haggas team but more than deserves her place in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, should she decide to line up. Tuesday would look to be the best chance for Ballydoyle and she could well go in search of a hattrick of wins in the race for Aidan O’Brien. 32
Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.
19 Friday Things to do:
All about the girls
We will see plenty of the world’s fastest horses on the planet here come August for the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe. Among those entered are Miss Yorkshire herself Winter Power. The King Power filly has already tasted success in this race and despite a slightly more subdued campaign, surely she will have been aimed at this race. Highfield Princess ran a screamer last time out at Ascot, that very much confirmed her win in the 1895 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics. Trained by John Quinn, she is a filly going places and could easily be up to winning this, though others would urge a tilt at the £400,000 Group 2 Sky Bet City of York over two furlongs further come Saturday. Dramatised could become the first two-year-old since Kingsgate Native in 2007 to win the race. She couldn’t have done much more this season after bolting up at Ascot in the Queen Mary.
Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar
The Ridler was somewhat of a shock in the Norfolk Stakes and his owners looked just as bemused as the rest of the racing public! Trained by Yorkshire’s own Richard Fahey, he could well turn up in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack. The Antarctic was narrowly beaten in a thrilling race behind Wadao, after a disappointing effort behind The Ridler. She could well be joined by stablemate Blackbeard, who can be a bit of a tricky customer for the stalls handlers before the race! Noble Style was forced to miss his engagement in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot but could be back in there. The last horse to mention is the Coventry winner himself, Bradsell. Bought by Victorious Racing after his win at the Knavesmire, he then went onto pummel his rivals under a triumphant Hollie Doyle.
20 Saturday Things to do:
Earn a place in the Folklore of the Knavesmire
That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor. The beauty of a handicap is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, never mind the full entry list. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race to the Ebor trial winners seem a great place to start. Valley Forge took home the Sky Bet Melrose last year, defeating all 21 rivals to place himself in the frame for the big one this year. Gaassee threw his hat into the ring for the Haggas team after an excellent staying performance. Earl Of Tyrone will be hoping he can follow in the footsteps of last year’s Irish raider Sonnyboyliston. Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £80,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

RACE DESCRIPTION
A competitive handicap, for 4yo+ horses run over a mile and a half.
Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best in past form will be the highest rated horses, Bollin Joan finds himself at the top and so will carry most weight. The high upper rating band of 90 means that it will attract some pretty smart types. If you are looking for help, follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SOUTHERN VOYAGE progressed nicely throughout last season, landing a hat-trick of victories including twice in handicap company at Ascot and Thirsk, and the son of Wootton Bassett appeals as the type to step forward once again, especially after a gelding operation. Forza Orta ran with plenty of credit here behind Gaassee earlier in the season and a drop in class is likely to see him enter calculations, while My Little Queens could have more to offer on her first attempt at 1m4f.

The William Hill Summer Stakes
FACT FILE:
Distance Six furlongs
Prize money £80,000
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS HAVE ANY RACE?
The William Hill Summer Stakes was first run in 1996 when it was a Listed contest for fillies and mares aged three and above. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2003.
WINNERS SCALED WHO WAS THE EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS? FIRST WINNER? Carranita won the first renewal for trainer Bryn Palling and jockey Tim Sprake.
Serious Attitude won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes during her juvenile season and after her win here went on to land another Group 1 in Canada.
The 2004 winner Tante Rose was arguably the classiest as she won the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup two months after victory here.
WHAT IS THE FASTEST TIME FOR THE RACE? That honour falls to Ladies Are Forever, owned by the much missed Reg Bond, who recorded a time of 1min 9.18secs in 2011. She also ran the second fastest time of 1min 9.30secs in 2014. The late Reg Bond with his star mare
ANY OVERSEAS-TRAINED WINNERS?
Theann became the first overseas-trained winner when landing the spoils for Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan in 2007. In 2012 the prize went to Germany when Gracia Directa was partnered to victory by Robert Winston for the Hamburg-based trainer Dominik Moser. That filly will remain the last winner based overseas as all of today’s competitors hail from British yards.
Gracia Directa 42
LEADING TRAINERS?
Geoff Oldroyd
Geoff Oldroyd won this race three times in recent years courtesy of his flying filly Ladies Are Forever. Toby Balding managed to win the race twice with Palace Affair in 2001 & 2002 whilst Richard Hannon Snr also won the race twice with Nanoushka in 1998 and Lucky Spin in 2005. Handlers with a runner today who have already won the race include Kevin Ryan, who saddles Hala Hala Athmani, with regular jockey Kevin Stott booked. Ed Walker won the race in 2019 and this year sends Tenaya Canyon to see if she can claim the spoils.
LEADING RIDER? Two jockeys’ have won this race more than once. Steven Carson partnered Palace Affair to back-to-back victories. Paul Hanagan joined him in 2019 when guiding Royal Intervention to victory for Ed Walker. Nine years prior he had won the race on Rose Blossom, for the Yorkshire based Richard Fahey. Today he does not have a ride, however there are three riding today who could: Silvestre De Sousa, Stevie Donohue and Daniel Tudhope all have a ride and will be hoping to join them on two winners.
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
In 2014, Ladies Are Forever achieved the quite remarkable feat of winning this race three times. Interestingly, for each of her three victories in 2011, 2013 & 2014 she was ridden by a different jockey - Silvestre De Sousa, Graham Lee & Danny Tudhope respectively. She didn’t take part in 2012!
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the most trusted brands in the marketplace, attracting millions of customers from around the world.
Steven Carson
Paul Hanagan
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Initially not all that well. Tim Easterby won it with Hot Tin Roof in 2000 but we had to wait until 2010 for another Yorkshire-trained winner when Rose Blossom scored for Richard Fahey. Since, then Geoff Oldroyd has boosted the tally thanks to the success of Ladies Are Forever, while Kevin Ryan’s Queen Jo Jo made it four of the last ten winners for the White Rose. It falls to one of Kevin Ryan, Karl Burke, Michael Dods (well he’s near enough to claim!) or Richard Fahey to defend the home county’s honour today.
They now bring that expertise to the Retail betting shops here at York.

RACE DESCRIPTION The William Hill Summer Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1. In the search for competition, this race is only open to three-year-old and older fillies and mares. Weight allowances are made for the natural variation in strength of 3yos; notice how Flotus is one of six to benefit. KNAVESMIRE TIP FLOTUS was unfortunate to bump into a progressive rival when finishing second at Haydock two starts ago and she then made the frame in the Commonwealth Cup. A reproduction of either of those efforts today would give her a big chance in this company. Zain Claudette was not disgraced in the same race at Royal Ascot and last year’s Lowther winner should not be underestimated today. Similar comments apply to Hala Hala Athmani, while Umm Kulthum is the pick of the remainder.

RACE DESCRIPTION A race limited to 2-year-old fillies over 5 furlongs. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme. The Punters Panel at 1.15pm might offer some clues.

KNAVESMIRE TIP With several appealing prospects going to post, marginal preference is for YAHSAT, who has been markedly eased in grade having not been disgraced in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot last month. She has proven form over this course and distance, beaten a neck by Pillow Talk in a Listed race in May. The Platinum Queen is another worthy of consideration, along with the down-in-trip Mersea.

See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Getting the hang of handicaps? Your vital statistics are; 3yo, rated 66-85, going a mile and a quarter. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 85 means that these are still quality horses but they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. If you are seeking inspiration (or someone to blame), look at the Press Selections Board, adjacent to the Winner’s Enclosure.

KNAVESMIRE TIP After being headed, Animato showed a willing attitude to land his second career win at Redcar last time and warrants plenty of respect. However, Roger Varian’s ASAASSI looks the type to build on his recent Salisbury maiden win now handicapping and the son of Sea The Moon gets the nod. Kalahari Prince arrives on the back of a creditable fourth in a novice event at Redcar last month and the handicap debutant is another to consider.

KNAVESMIRE TIP SALEYMM has been knocking on the door in similar contests this season, most notably when runner-up in the Lincoln, and a recent gelding operation may be the key to him gaining a first success in 2022. Northern Express went up 4lb for a recent success over course and distance, travelling strongly throughout that event, and he commands plenty of respect. Escobar also won here earlier in the season and is respected, along with Major Partnership, whose stable have a fine record with horses returning from a long absence.

Distance: Race Type: Rating: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:
5f Handicap 66-85 £17,500 3+ Centre
See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Another competitive handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over five furlongs. Remember, it’s a handicap so the best on past performance in the eyes of the handicapper will be the highest rated horse and start by carrying the most weight. However, connections can opt to use an apprentice jockey and so claim a reduction, see how Van Gerwen has 5lb lifted from his back as Ryan Sexton takes the ride. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name- James Watt carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Ghathanfar has been raised 5lb for his win at Pontefract but perhaps the application of cheekpieces could eke out enough improvement to defy the handicapper, though PEGGY SIOUX is marginally preferred. Kevin Ryan’s filly showed plenty of grit to keep on for third once headed in a valuable handicap at Royal Ascot and a 3lb rise for that looks fair. Chester winner King Of Tonga, the consistent Eeh Bah Gum and Nottingham second James Watt also merit respect.

About One Mile (1,500 metres)
See page 75 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A final handicap but with an added dimension to the contest, in that this time, all the riders are still apprentices. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. Rising star Fay McManoman has enough winners in the bank that Piastrella gets no relief; whereas the Jazz Samba/Brandon Wilkie partnership are 7lbs better off as the young pilot learns his trade. Pick the winner and then you can bask in the glory until around 1.47pm tomorrow afternoon.

KNAVESMIRE TIP BEAUTIFUL SURPRISE showed plenty of promise when scoring on her debut at Epsom, before finishing a well-beaten third on the all-weather at Wolverhampton last September. A return to turf could be perfect for Hugo Palmer’s charge. Piastrella may not be far behind her having finished a good third at Beverley over an extended 7f last month, while International Boy is another entitled to improve up in trip and he completes the shortlist.
