The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

In 2006 she took on the roll of assistant trainer to Aidan Howard and after 15 years, she felt the time was right to take out her own trainers licence. There are a number of reasons as to why Jenny chose to set up training on The Curragh, the main reason being the strong support network in the racing community based here on The Curragh. CURRAGH COMMENT Plenty of top stables are represented in this juvenile contest and experience may prove to be a valuable commodity, with the Joseph O’Brien-trained AMORTENTIA looking the most appealing candidate. The son of Caravaggio has shown plenty of promise in his two starts to date and, with the promise of more to come, he gets the vote. Paris Lights is bred to be smart and his debut fifth over course and distance suggested he has plenty to offer once fully up to speed, while the Ballydoyle newcomer Dalmatian Coast also boasts a striking pedigree and looks capable of having a say in proceedings.

CURRAGH COMMENT There are plenty of improving contenders lining up for this contest and marginal preference goes to the son of Invincible Spirit, NEW YORK CITY. The 600,000gns purchase is related to plenty of Group winners and, after struggling in the Middle Park Stakes last time, this looks like the perfect opportunity to get off the mark. He gets the nod, while Special Power rates the most immediate danger after finishing second on his last four outings. Life In Colour was denied a clear run on her racecourse debut and she may have more to give today.

RACE FOUR

CURRAGH COMMENT A difficult puzzle to solve, with the relatively exposed Anner Castle likely to be popular in his bid to break the maiden tag at the sixth time of asking. Preference, however, is for the lightly-raced FLORA, who has gone off favourite on both career outings thus far, only to display greenness on both occasions. She appeals as a filly that is gradually learning her trade and much better is expected here, with the Curragh’s long straight expected to suit. The consistent Lusaka can also get involved, along with Merlin Giant and the class dropping Seattle Creek.

WIN:FLORA

DANGER: ANNER CASTLE

THANK YOU The Curragh would like to thank Eva Bucher–Haefner’s Moyglare Stud for the generous sponsorship of the Stable Staff Canteen for the 2021 season.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

CURRAGH COMMENT In an open race the marginal preference is for FRANNO, who won twice in July and was far from disgraced at Galway a couple of starts ago. Her most recent effort at Bellewstown was not her best but it is far too soon to be writing her off. Crassus is a consistent performer who is more than capable of making the frame, while the unexposed Breffni Girl and Easily are the pick of the remainder.

John C McConnell T

CURRAGH COMMENT Jim Bolger has tried Business Speak over a variety of trips and he has hinted that his time could be near if seeing out this distance, while Angel In The Sky proved she acts at this trip when successful at Bellewstown and could go well despite a 7lb hike. Racy Lacey is another maiden worthy of consideration, but perhaps this could be CHACHA DANCER’s chance to open her account. Chris Timmons’ grey has got within half a length of success in two of her last three outings and was not too far away in the other. She has been bumped up 5lb as a result, but still gets the vote.

WIN: CHACHA DANCER

DANGER: BUSINESS SPEAK

CURRAGH COMMENT BORN INVINCIBLE caught the eye when recording a second-placed finish at Limerick earlier this month. The five-year-old mare appeared to be outpaced in the closing stages, but she gets the vote to build on that performance now stepping up in distance. Dromod Lad hinted at a return to form with a promising display at Thurles last week, while Dutch Schaefer merits respect shouldering a 6lb penalty for her latest success.

CURRAGH COMMENT RED WASP is the least exposed member of the field having only had two starts, but the filly got off the mark at Down Royal last month and she commands the utmost respect with her attentions now switched to handicap company. Dandy Spirit has stepped forward on his latest outings at Bellewstown and he is likely to enter calculations, while others to warrant consideration include Amazing Emma, who has been mostly consistent in recent months, and Showmolina.
