Welcome A very warm welcome to the final day of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival 2021, featuring the most famous race of our season – the Sky Bet Ebor. This year’s renewal offers a purse of £500,000 making it both Europe’s richest flat handicap and more than double any other flat handicap, so no surprise that it has attracted a very high calibre field – have fun picking out the winner. Ahead of the Sky Bet Ebor we will welcome the riders in this historic race to the parade ring – do come and cheer them down the steps. It has been a week to savour so far, with Mishriff’s stunning performance in the top quality Juddmonte International, Snowfall bolting clear of her rivals in a memorable Darley Yorkshire Oaks and Winter Power flying home in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe for Yorkshire’s Tim Easterby. Add in a dramatic third Weatherbys Hamilton Cup title for Stradivarius yesterday, complete with flying dismount from Frankie Dettori, and it has already been an unforgettable few days. Some major Newmarket operations have declared fancied runners, for example Roger Varian who hopes Fujaira Prince can become only the second horse to win the race twice and so emulate Flint Jack from the best part of a century ago. The Sky Bet Race to the Ebor series sees three of the four contenders take up their slot, as William Haggas sends both Ilaraab (Sky Bet Jorvik) and Roberto Escobarr (Sky Bet Grand Cup) to do battle with Shanroe, the Karl Thornton trained Irish nomination. The recent Irish run of success could well continue - Willie Mullins has an interesting chance in the shape of Mt Leinster, while Johnny Murtagh saddles both Sonnyboyliston and Mirann. Consider that Malton based David O’Meara is responsible for York Group race winner, Eagles By Day in the colours of Leeds businessman, Steve Parkin, and it could be a landmark day for Yorkshire. Leeds based Sky Bet are fabulous partners and share a vision for this Ebor Festival, we are delighted that the City of York which is of one of 13 races to carry their support has been recently upgraded to Group 2. The prize money of £200,000 has drawn a classy field, headed by Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner, Space Blues. We are delighted to welcome the 22 Ebor Community Heroes to York as set out on pages 66-68 of the racecard, just after the runners and riders for the big race itself. These inspirational individuals have been nominated by members of their community, shortlisted from a large field and each are assigned a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor. The hero connected to the winning horse will win £5,000 for themselves and £15,000 for their charity. Wherever they finish, we hope they thoroughly enjoy their Ebor day and receive our thanks and admiration. We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors. We are particularly proud that Welcome to Yorkshire has chosen the Ebor Festival to showcase the county to the world as our title sponsor. Look up to see the RAF Falcons Display team dropping in at 1.15pm, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, enjoy the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Mercier Champagne for just £40 a bottle; whatever, I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?

Can you name this famous horse who won the Sky Bet Ebor over 40 years ago?

TRUE OR FALSE?

Here are some statements about today’s big race, the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, but are they true or false? Answers are on Page 93. 1. After winning four of the last five runnings of the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, six-year-olds are now the most successful age group in the history of the race. True or False? 2. The difference between the highest weight carried to victory and the lowest weight carried by a winner is more than five-and-a-half stones (77lbs). True or False? 3. Jonjo O’Neill is the only jockey to have won both the Champion Hurdle and the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap on the same horse. True or False? 4. No horse has ever won the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap twice. True or False? 5. Eleven times champion Lester Piggott, who won the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap five times in 25 years, is the most successful jockey in the history of the race. True or False?

YORK’S RACING CHALLENGE

1. The late Geoff Turnbull-owned Lord Glitters marked himself as a horse to follow when winning the 2018 Sky Bet and Symphony Group Strenstall Stakes, a race he’s become something of a regular in, and has gone on to top level victory since, but what we want to know is which fellow subsequent Group 1 winner was half a length back in second that day? Can you also remember which Group 1 races were won by both horses last season?

2. The Sky Bet City Of York Stakes was run as a Group 2 for the first time in 2019 and Shine So Bright was the first winner at that level. However, can you name the multiple Group 1-winning mare she defeated and how many top-level races that second-placed mare was successful in? 3. Fujaira Prince bids to do the Sky Bet Ebor double today after winning the race last year, but he’ll have to defy history as only one horse has managed to win the Sky Bet Ebor twice - can you name him? Extra credit if you know when he prevailed. 4. Sticking with today’s feature handicap, the links between York and Flemington are many, but which horses have gone closest to winning the Lexus Melbourne Cup, finishing second down under, after taking victory in the Sky Bet Ebor? We’ll need the years too please! 5. The Julia Graves Roses Stakes has been a proving ground for sprinting talent over the years, but can you name the crack sprinter who took the race back in 2013 and now spends his time producing the sprinters of today? Extra points if you can name the British Champions Series contest he won at three.

Answers to today’s puzzles can be found on page 93. 14

CODEWORD

Have a go at today’s Codeword, in which the numbers represent the letters of the alphabet. Four of the answers are the names of former winners of the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, DONINO (1948), DONALD (1956), DIE HARD (1961) and, most importantly, DAARKOM (1987). Find these names in the grid and you will be well on your way. When you have completed the grid and matched the letters to all the numbers, fill in the selection grid at the bottom of the page to find the selections for today’s seven races. Good Luck! Solution is on page 93

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

KNAVESMIRE TIP REAL WORLD is a standout in this contest having won emphatically at both Newbury and Royal Ascot. He remains open to more improvement on grass after just two turf starts and could easily be of Group 1 standard by the end of the season. The same age but with far more experience, My Oberon can give him most to think about after some solid efforts this campaign. Course specialist Brunch and previous winner Lord Glitters complete the shortlist.

YESTERDAYS RACING CTION THE WEATHERBYS HAMILTON LONSDALE CUP (GROUP 2)

After a head-to-head battle up the length of the Knavesmire straight, the great Stradivarius edged his way into the history books, nosing out the brave Spanish Mission to secure his third Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup title. Despite there being just a four-runner field after Trueshan was taken out on account of the quickening ground, the race itself developed into a classic, with the Andrew Balding-trained Spanish Mission and John & Thady Gosden’s popular stayer quickly taking charge as they swung around the final bend. Stradivarius, in the familiar Nielsen colours, travelled the stronger to begin with, but the further they went, the clearer it became that his younger rival was not for shaking off. Frankie Dettori had to ask his mount for everything he had, but as his trainer himself said afterwards; “He used to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, but he’s a bit more rope-a-dope these days,” and so it proved, with Stradivarius saving his final charge for the last 50 yards, where he edged in front of Spanish Mission to win by the barest of margins. It was a fine effort from the runner up, who looks set to head to Flemington in November for the Lexus Melbourne Cup, but for Stradivarius, it was history - the first horse to win the race three times. His pilot, Dettori, was visibly emotional after the win: “He got the job done. I was really choking up when he got an amazing reception. I love him so much.”

THE COOLMORE WOOTTON BASSETT NUNTHORPE (GROUP 1)

It was glory for Yorkshire in this year’s Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe as the Tim Easterby-trained filly, Winter Power, blasted away from a world-class field of sprinters to take a sensational first Group 1 triumph. With global Group winners, Golden Pal and Suesa in opposition, as well as Dragon Symbol and Arecibo, who had both gone so close at the top level this season, the race was packed with quality. It was therefore no surprise that the contest was run at a breakneck pace right from the start, with the Wesley Ward-trained speedster cutting out the early fractions, company coming from the three-year-old filly hailing from Great Habton and Liberty Beach who also broke smartly. As the field passed the two furlong marker, the distress signals were beginning to come from Frankie Dettori on board Golden Pal, thus handing the lead to Winter Power, who was still skipping along powerfully. Despite the best efforts of the chasing pack, including Emaraaty Ana from Kevin Ryan’s Hambleton yard, Dragon Symbol and the French-trained filly Suesa, who stayed on strongly for second, third and fourth respectively, Winter Power was not for catching under Silvestre de Sousa, blitzing her rivals in the same way she had already done twice on the Knavesmire this season. “She’s an incredible filly. She just came right for the day,” said Easterby. “It’s the best, isn’t it. What more can you get than a winner at York? It’s a great feeling.”

FACES BEHIND THE RACES • What is your current role at York Racecourse? General Manager of Stableside

• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? 15 years, starting as summer help in the Bookings Team

• Outside the racedays at York, what do you do the rest of the year?

At Stableside we welcome hotel guests when we are not looking after stable staff, we can’t wait till next Monday, being 17th May, so there is a never a quiet day for us! From school children exploring the wonders of the city, to leisure guests looking for that proper Yorkshire welcome. You will usually find me up and down our corridors ensuring everything is just right for our next visitor! To add to the welcome, we recently opened a campsite for visitors on summer weekends, all very exciting, so check us out on pitchup.com (think tripadvisor for tents!).

• At the end of the raceday at York Racecourse, tell us what makes it a good one?

Probably under 30,000 steps and where everyone leaves happy, having sampled what I think are the best racing staff facilities in the country, eager for their next visit and at least seven having a winner in the back of their horse box!

• How did you become involved in racing at York?

My family have always been involved, from my Grandfather being an on-course bookmaker and my Dad following in his footsteps. Racing was always going to be my path, I started at the Racecourse as work experience and never left!

• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York

Come and stay with us at Stableside! We have some beautifully renovated rooms courtesy of our very talented facilities team, complete with a floor laid by the Chairman and walls painted by the Clerk. We believe we offer the best value stay in York.

FAY WAUDBY-GREEN • Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire

The Gimcrack Restaurant offers a really fantastic 3 course meal or later in the day afternoon tea in a beautiful traditional setting that screams “proper” York Racecourse to me whilst not ignoring my Yorkshire roots I think it offers “proper” good value as well!

• Thinking of racing personalities, past and present, what question would you most like to ask them? How do you pick a future winner?

• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?

Juddmonte International Day (18th August this year) which you can’t beat for the absolutely high-class racing, nothing gives me a bigger thrill then seeing some of my favourite horses throughout the year battling it out in the Group One feature, which regularly appears in the top 10 races in the world.

Mecca’s Angel

• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?

This is really difficult; I think Mecca’s Angel winning her first Coolmore Nunthorpe, so giving Paul Mulrennan his first taste of Group 1 glory really sticks in my memory. She reeled in Wesley Ward’s American Raider, Acapulco, and was a real star that day.

• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?

Absolutely this has to be Sea the Stars, I used to have a picture of him in my bedroom! For me he was the complete racehorse, he won over different distances, in different countries and took on all comers and I don’t think they ever truly got to the bottom of him, he always pulled out more. Some people say horses have a look when they know they’re the best and when I saw Sea the Stars in the Parade Ring before his Juddmonte victory he had that look.

• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?

These questions are getting harder! I’m going to go for a “girl power” table here, Katie Walsh, Clare Balding, Henrietta Knight, Denise Coates and York Racecourse’s very own Jane Richardson, what she’s forgotten about York Racecourse is more than I’ll ever know, so we need to make the most of her before her retirement!

• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?

When Marcus caught Brian the Snail, who had managed to get loose in the Stable Yard. Brian didn’t live up to his name, he was extremely fast! 33

WHAT’S NEW IN THE WORLD OF EBOR?

Today sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a five-year partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet.

York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race. Today sees the culmination of the 2020/21 series entitled the “Race To The Ebor”, and the beginning of the 2021/22 series, which features four high-class staying contests as ‘qualifiers’ for today’s feature contest, including a brand new Irish race which debuted in the series this year. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are: Sky Bet Melrose Sky Bet Jorvik Sky Bet Stakes Sky Bet Grand Cup Handicap (3YO only) Handicap (4YO+) (Handicap, 4YO+) (Listed, 4YO+) York - 1m 6f Saturday 22 August 2020

York - 1m 4f Wednesday 12 May 2021

The Curragh - 1m 6f Thursday 3 June 2021

York - 1m 6f Saturday 12 June 2021

The winners of the four races above were guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2021 provided they were entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2021 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money. While last season’s Sky Bet Melrose winner, the Andrew Balding-trained Coltrane does not use his ‘golden ticket’, the Sky Bet Jorvik hero, the impressive Ilaraab for the William Haggas team, does take his place in the 22 this afternoon. In the inaugural running of the Irish ‘qualifier’, Shanroe justified the favourite’s price when winning at The Curragh earlier this month and lines up in today’s field as a result, while the Sky Bet Grand Cup winner Roberto Escobarr also represents William Haggas, giving the Skipton-born trainer a strong hand in the race through two big race winners. In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process. Though entry no. 22, Shanroe, has the same rating and so natural weight as Makawee, above him. To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration and used for the very first time in 2019 as Mustajeer scooped the pot in the Sky Bet Ebor.

1m 6f Heritage Handicap 0-105 £125,000 3 Inside Rail

One Mile About Six Furlongs (2,800 metres) See page 94 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for just three year olds run over a mile and three quarters. The winner is the first to qualify for the Sky Bet Ebor of 2022 subject to the terms of the Race to the Ebor programmes. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The horse considered by the handicapper as the best, on past performance, will carry the most weight; King Of The Castle carries the top weight today. Listen to the experts on ITV Racing to form a view.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Imperial Sun looked to be improving when winning very easily at Wolverhampton and although this is a much tougher event, he may still be a small step ahead of the handicapper. True Courage goes from strength to strength and is looking for his four-timer, but KING OF THE CASTLE may yet be better than a handicapper. A brother of Derby winner Serpentine, he got off the mark at Limerick and could go on from that to better things.

KNAVESMIRE LEG SERGEANT CECIL

NDS

The British public have always loved an underdog and Sergeant Cecil was certainly that. Sergeant Cecil was bred in the South West of England, a metaphorical million miles from the breeding epicentre of Newmarket. He was the first foal of Jadidh, a modest hurdle winner, by the less than fashionable stallion King’s Signet but despite these humble beginnings he soon found an owner in Terry Cooper. Interviewed following Sergeant Cecil’s victory in the 2007 Matchbook Yorkshire Cup, Cooper said of his purchase: “I liked his mother, Jadidh. She was a lovely mare and I always thought I’d like to have her first foal. I first saw Sergeant Cecil when he was three weeks old and bought him at six months. I’d rather not say how much I paid. It was a private sale but he wasn’t expensive.” Initially, Sergeant Cecil was in training with Seamus Mullins and he made a rather inauspicious start to his career, failing to land a blow from six starts. In the summer of 2002 he joined the ranks of Rod Millman’s Devon-based team but even then he failed to win, although he was placed in six races. In May 2003, he finally lost his maiden tag at Sandown over 1m6f. At this point he was still only officially rated 79 but the bandwagon had started to roll. Over the next couple of seasons he equipped himself well in handicaps but it was 2005 when he really hit the big time. Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate was his first major scalp and although he was beaten next time at Goodwood the vibes were strong as he lined up for the Sky Bet Ebor at The Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival. Always a hugely competitive race, our hero was positioned at the back of the field by Alan Munro through the early stages. As the field turned into the home straight the pair began to make relentless progress. As his rivals sent out distress signals, Sergeant Cecil appeared to become stronger the further he went.

When he saw daylight inside the closing stages he surged to the front to win by a length from Carte Diamond, earning a place in the history books as the first winner of the Northumberland Plate and the Sky Bet Ebor in the same year since 1911. The third leg in his record-breaking season came in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket. A mammoth field of 34 went to post but this redoubtable performer again showed his class to win a shade cleverly from King Revo. His exploits of 2005 meant that Sergeant Cecil was now considered a serious ‘Cup’ horse and on his second start of 2006 he ran well to finish runner-up to Percussionist in the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup. In common with many decent sorts, he was no match for the iconic Yeats in the Gold Cup at Ascot and Goodwood Cup but he secured his first Group race success in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup on favoured Knavesmire turf, that August. Two weeks later he was a York winner once again when wining the Doncaster Cup, which was held here due to re-developments on Town Moor. And a month later he secured a big-race hat-trick when winning the Prix du Cadran at the prestigious Arc meeting. Sergeant Cecil’s final victory came at this very meeting when he won the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup, beating Geordieland by three quarters of a length. He did return to the Knavesmire twice more, finishing fifth in the Weatherbys Hamilton Londsale Cup and the following season’s Yorkshire Cup. From 53 starts, Sergeant Cecil won ten races, four of which came at York, amassing prize money of £828,127 in the process. He was a real favourite with the crowd at York and richly deserves the title Knavesmire Legend.

RACE DESCRIPTION Again, part of the Pattern pyramid, this race has recently been elevated to Group 2 status; it is for 3yo+ over seven furlongs. Weight allowances are in play for this race, as well as penalties for previous high-level wins, see how Fivethousandtoone benefits being a younger horse. Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Space Blues as one that carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP While some of these candidates seem to be experimenting at this trip, SPACE BLUES has become a 7f specialist through his globe-trotting exploits. The son of Dubawi had questions to answer after a lacklustre effort in the Al Quoz Sprint, but it’s fair to say his gallant performance in the Lennox Stakes confirmed that he retains all the ability and enthusiasm required to win another Group contest. The five-year-old may prove too classy for his rivals, with the progressive Primo Bacio appearing the most immediate danger on her return to 7f. Glorious Journey wasn’t disgraced in the July Cup and he warrants the utmost respect stepping back up to his optimum trip.

THE RAY GILPIN AWARD

Ray Gilpin (1942-2015)

FOR THE TOP JOCKEY OF THE WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR FESTIVAL

This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015. A proud welshman, you’ll notice the armband worn by the rider in front, is in scarlet. The colour of the scarf that Ray always wore to the races. With just one day to go, Oisin Murphy, Ryan Moore and David Allan are neck and neck and neck with two winners each, but with Oisin and Ryan engaged elsewhere, Allan is in pole position to fend off the six other pilots who have one win each so far this week and are booked to ride on today’s card. 51

AGE The seven-year-old Litigant became the oldest winner since Sea Pigeon back in 1979 when landing the spoils four years ago but the group to focus on is the five and six-year-olds, who between them have landed eight of the last ten renewals. They represent over half of the twenty-two runner field this time around.

RECENT FORM Unexposed, dark horses do not win the Ebor. Nine of the last ten winners had achieved a top five finish on their most recent start. We can take this trend one step further when you consider that seven of the last ten winners had achieved a top two finish on either or both of their two latest starts.

DRAW Usually in races such as this, being drawn on the rail is an advantage but that hasn’t proved the case in the Sky Bet Ebor. The fact that eight of the last ten winners have been drawn in stall 10 or higher suggests that is in fact the higher drawn horses which seem to be favoured. With victory in the Ebor being held in such high esteem, those jockeys drawn low have shown a tendency to break far too quickly from the stalls in order to take advantage of their draw but only end up setting a furious early pace which can often set the race up for more patiently ridden rivals.

BETTING Whichever way you look at it, this is not a race in which following the favourite has proved a fruitful strategy - there have only been three winning favourites since 1998. In the last ten years, we have had winners at 20/1, 25/1 and 33/1 so the best advice is to back your selection regardless of the starting price.

OFFICIAL RATINGS Horses rated between 99 and 108 may have won the race nine times in the last ten renewals but as the weights continue to compress, you need to be rated that high to even get in nowadays. The highest rated winner in recent years was Muntahaa, who won off a mark of 109 in 2018, with the last two winners, Mustajeer and Fujaira Prince, rated 108.

KEY TRENDS Drawn stall 10 or higher Five or Six-year-old Top five finish last time Rated 105+

Muntahaa

CONCLUSION A genuniely top-class renewal of this famous Heritage Handicap and with 15 of the 22 runners rated at least 105, it's a sensational race in prospect. The trends point to a highly-rated five or six-year-old who's been in good form and the Andrew Baldingtrained TRIBAL CRAFT certainly ticks all those boxes. A powerful winner of the Group 3 Bronte Cup over this same C&D in May, this mare is coming on leaps and bounds, so much so that she gave the Group 1 filly, Wonderful Tonight a scare at Goodwood last time out. With two sadly departed stallions in the shape of Mastercraftsman and Galileo running strongly through her pedigree, it would be a poignant victory. Others to merit noting include Away He Goes, who has the Lexus Melbourne Cup in his sights down the road and the Sky Bet Ebor has often been the ideal race before that task, plus Ilaraab, who blew his rivals away in the Sky Bet Jorvik here earlier this year. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 57

The Sky Bet Ebor

FACT FILE: WERE YOU HERE THE DAY WHEN…

Sea Pigeon

Distance One mile & six furlongs (2,800m)

Prize money £500,000

Where have four decades gone, Sea Pigeon was a most popular winner in 1979. The nine-year-old gelding, once ante-post favourite for the Derby and a future dual Champion Hurdle winner, represented Yorkshire trainer Peter Easterby and humped 10 stone to victory. He was ridden to victory by jump jockey Jonjo O’Neill – now a highly successful trainer.

OR FOR THE POST MILLENNIUM GENERATION…

When Sergeant Cecil won another great race on Knavesmire? He won the 2005 Sky Bet Ebor on his first visit to York and added the Stobart Rail Northumberland Plate and the Cesarewitch in the same year to make history by becoming the first horse to land the three premier staying handicaps. The gelding always raised his game on the Knavesmire and later added the Yorkshire Cup, the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup and the rearranged 2006 Doncaster Cup to his triumphs here.

FIRST WINNER?

Pagan was the first winner of the race, ridden by Slim Templeman and trained by John Scott. The 6-1 shot carried 7st 13lbs and was a popular winner. Soon the betting public was hooked and York’s fortunes blossomed.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

Simply it is York’s most famous race, and shares its name with the Roman city, EBORACUM that is now known as York. It is the biggest gambling heat of the week here on the Knavesmire and the oldest race of the Festival, first run 1843.

WILL IRISH EYES BE SMILING?

They were in 2009 and 2010 when Sesenta and Dirar won for Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott respectively and again in 2014 when Mutual Regard won for Johnny Murtagh. But overall, runners from over the water don’t have the greatest of records, after a lean spell in the later years of last century and first decade of this, illuminated only by the Aidan O’Brientrained Mediterranean in 2001, fortunes have been better of late. With the ill-fated Heartbreak City’s impressive triumph in 2016 and Mustajeer winning 2019’s race, perhaps Irish fortunes have really turned a corner, so Sonnyboyliston, Mt Leinster, Mirann and Shanroe could add to the recent good record for the Irish. Mutual Regard

LEADING TRAINER?

Saeed bin Suroor

The recently-retired Luca Cumani was the trainer to follow, having won it three times - Vicious Circle (1999), Mephisto (2004) & Purple Moon (2007). Saeed bin Suroor has won two of the last ten renewals, including the 2008 substitute race at Newbury, and with Willing Foe in 2012, but isn’t represented today. Three other trainers with runners today have tasted past success - John Gosden (Humanitarian), Roger Varian (Fujaira Prince) and Willie Mullins (Mt Leinster).

LEADING RIDER? Lester Piggott, whose statue is now on the Edwardian Weighing Room Lawn, leads the way with five victories. When it comes to the current crop, the only riders to have won the race before are Andrea Atzeni, who partners defending champion Fujaira Prince, and Dane O’Neill, on board Away He Goes.

THE 3-YEAR-OLD QUESTION?

With the Sky Bet Ebor becoming one of Europe’s richest and best handicaps, it was the right time to consider how the race best fits in to the overall racing programme. For the three-year-olds, the established Pattern programme has a proven rhythm and it is not the intention to alter running plans for the best of the Classic crop. In a typical year, the investment in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur keeps the pathway to the Cazoo St Leger. The Ebor will now focus on stayers aged four and upwards. The Race to The Ebor also links the more valuable Sky Bet Melrose with next season, so retaining a 3-y-o connection. In practical terms, the stats show that as the quality of the Ebor has increased, only two horses aged three actually made the stalls in the last decade, with the last classic generation winner back in 2001, when Mediterranean took the spoils.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker. We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of RequestABet, First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a five-year partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of a lucky 13 races this week.

Lester Piggott

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

Yorkshire-trained horses have a good overall record, although Moyenne Corniche became only the fourth winner in the past 26 renewals when triumphing six years ago for Brian Ellison. The late Jimmy Fitzgerald saddled Sapience to score in 1989, the now recordbreaking Mark Johnston’s Quick Ransom was the hero in 1992 and Les Eyre won with Far Ahead in 1997. But with none of the above represented in this year’s Sky Bet Ebor, only David O’Meara, double handed with Eagles By Day and Makawee, can join that list today.

One Mile About Six Furlongs (2,700 metres) See page 94 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our feature race, the Sky Bet Ebor, remains the richest flat Handicap in Europe. It is open to 4yo+ horses and over a trip of a mile and three quarters. This race is theoretically open to any horse regardless of its official mark. The highest rated, still set to carry the most weight in this race today, is Euchen Glen. The runners are undoubtedly amongst the best in their class in Britain so remember to follow their progress in future contests, they could star in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Tough to win, harder to pick the winner, perhaps pay close attention to the Parade Ring before investing your cash.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Last year’s hero Fujaira Prince finished ahead of ROBERTO ESCOBARR (fourth), Away He Goes (fifth), Sonnyboyliston (sixth), Max Vega (seventh) and Quickthorn (eighth) when third in a Group 3 over this course and distance, but the selection gets 7lb from him in this and William Haggas’ charge could be better suited to this big field after being too keen on that occasion. Mt Leinster improved rapidly on the Flat last autumn and looks a major player, while Tribal Craft went close behind Wonderful Tonight in a Group 2 at Goodwood latest and must be considered.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO

EBOR COMMUNITY HERO FUND

The inaugural Ebor Community Hero Fund is an innovative initiative which seeks to reflect our times and to thank, celebrate and reward some of the countless thousands who have served our communities over the challenging pandemic of the last 17 months. Working with our partners at Welcome to Yorkshire, we invited nominations. Out of the many entries, we now have shortlisted 22 heroes who will all be joining us on Saturday – they will each be assigned a runner in the Sky Bet Ebor and the hero attached to the winning horse will receive both a prize of £5,000 for themselves and £15,000 for their chosen charity.

1

Euchen Glen (GB)

Ebor Community Hero: Dianne Illingworth Location: Malton

Nominated Charity: Ryedale Dog Rescue

A stalwart of Ryedale dog rescue, helping with donations, organising events, home checks, & getting volunteers.

2

Fujaira Prince (IRE)

Ebor Community Hero: Judy Olby Location: Otley

Nominated Charity: Otley and District Riding For the Disabled Association

Judy is a volunteer with the Otley and District Riding For the Disabled Association. An ex-dressage rider she devotes so much of her life to these horses and the programme. Guiding and ensuring all the volunteers and connections are picking up on every improvement in the riders as their confidence and skill levels rise.

3

Ilaraab (IRE)

Ebor Community Hero: Jean Sengelow Location: Dewsbury

4

Away He Goes (IRE)

Ebor Community Hero: Andrew Bodley Location: York

Nominated Charity: SASH

Andrew supports and accommodates young people through SASH. In just one example, he helped a vulnerable young female move in from an isolated situation at the height of the first lockdown despite the personal risks. Following his help, she is in a better place emotionally and back in education.

5

Eagles By Day (IRE)

Ebor Community Hero: Pierre Olesqui Location: Knaresborough

Nominated Charity: Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Pierre is a serving North Yorkshire Police Officer who in 2018 lost his best friend, PC Mick ‘Aky’ Atkinson to suicide. To date, the cash raised amounts to over £50,000.

6

Hamish (GB)

Ebor Community Hero: Charlotte Walton Location: York

Nominated Charity: York Women’s Counselling Service

Charlotte and her team have really made a difference to the lives of so many women who have suffered more than ever in these times. She recognised very early on in the pandemic that referrals for domestic abuse would soar and to this end she secured an extra counselling room as well as five volunteer therapists.

7

Alounak (FR)

Ebor Community Hero: Gordon ‘Kenny’ Dalgeish Location: York

Nominated Charity: St. Leonard’s Hospice and Home Leone

Kenny is often to be found helping neighbours doing odd jobs for those who would struggle otherwise and using his computer skills to decipher the digital world for older people. With his wife he has raised thousands of pounds for local charities helping Jo with a community art gallery. 66

8

Mekong (GB)

Ebor Community Hero: Raymond Wrigglesworth Location: Bedale

Nominated Charity: RSPCA

Raymond has been going the extra mile for the Community of Bedale for the last 20 years. He cooked meals and delivered them to vulnerable adults during the lockdowns. One of the residents developed dementia so, out of his own pocket, he moved him to a more suitable home, even buying a new bed.

9

Blue Cup (FR)

Ebor Community Hero: Cheryl Mitchell Location: Leeds

11 Roberto Escobarr (IRE) Ebor Community Hero: Andrea Petch Location: Otley

Andrea had 50 people answer her call for to sew scrubs for an under pressure NHS. For 18 months she organised the Sewing Collective to make 615 sets of scrubs and 900 masks over 6500 volunteer hours. Humbled to play a small part in Otley having one of the lowest Covid infection rates.

12 Max Vega (IRE)

Nominated Charity: The Mayor’s Charitable Trust, Keighley Town Council. Their charities this year are Manorlands Hospice and Martin House Children’s Hospice Long Lee Medical Centre, set high above Keighley, was amongst the first vaccination centres but traffic was a challenge in this village community. Step forward, Christine, who formed then ran a volunteer group to oversee directions and car parks, leaving the medics to do their thing! Ebor Community Hero: Christine Graham Location: Keighley

13 Pablo Escobarr (IRE) Ebor Community Hero: Stuart Wildridge Location: Rotherham

Nominated Charity: Rotherham United Community Sports Trust

Stuart (71) represents the best of Yorkshire, reliable, honest, & committed. Before the pandemic, he was welcoming supporters to the local rugby ground. He is also the oldest ball boy in the football league. Stuart is a military veteran and helps the clubs to liaise with groups that support ex-veterans who are isolated.

14 Humanitarian Ebor Community Hero: Lesley Stephenson Location: Huddersfield

Nominated Charity: Greenfields

Lesley devoted hours of her own time to ensuring no-one in the Dalton area went without food and basics. She managed a Christmas Hamper appeal last Christmas and distributed 150 Hampers containing at least £150 worth of food and toiletries to families in need. Also running a food bank for two decades.

15 Mt Leinster (IRE) Ebor Community Hero: Hilary Patchwork Platt Location: York

Nominated Charity: Bellfram Social Hall Charity

Hilary has volunteered since day one of lockdown at the food bank, as well as battling her own health being disabled. She’s helped families with money problems filling out forms and, I suspect, even given out of her own pocket.

67

16 Global Storm (IRE) Ebor Community Hero: Yvonne Copley Location: Easingwold

Nominated Charity: The Kyra Women’s Project. York

Yvonne founded Kyra Women’s Project York in 2013 as a support centre for women, run by women. Instead, Yvonne ensured that the 40+ volunteers could meet and support women online and by phone.

17 Tribal Craft (GB) Ebor Community Hero: Holly Bilton Location: York

19 Mirann (FR) Ebor Community Hero: Timothy Bilton Location: Barnsley

Nominated Charity: Weston Park Cancer Hospital

Despite been given 12 months to live in 2019, Tim is still going strong! An inspiration to other young men facing up to the reality of living with cancer. He’s continued to both work and cook for others, during his pioneering intensive immunotherapy. A credit to the hospitality industry.

20 Quickthorn (GB) Ebor Community Hero: Karen Simeson Location: York

Define a hero? - Karen was the first volunteer in the world for a Covid antibody trial!

22 Shanroe (GB) Ebor Community Hero: Nick Smith Location: Harrogate

Nominated Charity: Muscular Dystrophy UK

Operating in the travel industry it’s been a tough time for Nick’s business, yet he was undeterred in his mission to help others. Becoming a well known face behind his own mask when volunteering at Harrogate Hospital as front of house on the mask station.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

The Julia Graves Roses Stakes (Listed Race)

5f Listed £70,000 2 Centre

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 94 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION The final leg in our Pattern Race journey this week, this Listed race is for two-year-old horses over five furlongs. The shorter distance usually makes for a tight finish. Weight allowances mean the boys carry more weight to reflect their greater strength; York winner, Eternal Halo, is one of the six fillies who start from the lower mark today. All colts are on an even 9st apart for Caturra who carries a 3lb penalty for a previous Listed victory. Maybe an in-form yard is the way to go, check out the table before this race.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: ACKLAM EXPRESS Trainer: Nigel Tinkler Jockey: Tom Marquand Age/Weight: 2-9-0 Runners: 10 SP: 100/30F Justifying favouritism, Nigel Tinkler’s speedster made all in the hands of Tom Marquand, keeping on well to hold off the challenge of 50/1 outsider Queen Of Rio in the closing stages.

KNAVESMIRE TIP BOONIE has made the frame in all three starts since making a winning debut earlier in the year and that includes third-placed finishes in the Molecomb and Windsor Castle. Kevin Ryan’s colt should find this to be slightly easier than those two assignments and he may also benefit from the application of first-time cheekpieces. Attagirl was only beaten by a head in a similar event at Newbury eight days ago and that form gives her a big chance today. Others to consider are Thunder Love and Caturra.

One Mile And Two Furlongs About 88 Yards (2,000 metres)

1m 2f Handicap 0-105 £70,000 3+ Inside Rail

See page 94 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION Getting the hang of handicaps? Your vital statistics are; 3yo+ rated 0-105, going one and a quarter miles. The handicap rating band means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The best will be the highest rated, in this case 2020 John Smith’s Cup winner, Sinjaari, and so will carry most weight. If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: LUCANDER Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Harry Bentley Age/Weight: 3-8-7 Runners: 15 SP: 10/1 The softening surface suited Lucander down to the ground as he stayed on strongly inside the final 110 yards to overhaul Sky Defender, Fifth Position and Cockalorum, eventually winning by just under two lengths.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Many have pressing claims in this competitive handicap, but a chance is taken on the progressive WAHRAAN. The son of Le Havre is now bidding for the hat-trick after supplementing his breakthrough triumph with an easy victory at Newmarket, and he looks to be well treated with the three-year-old allowance. Qaader could be the danger after an impressive success at Goodwood and remains unexposed at this distance. Last year’s winner Lucander is not to be discounted now lurking on a tempting mark, while Migration and Strait Of Hormuz also make the shortlist.

THE APPRENTICE Today’s Sky Bet Apprentice Stakes is the richest of its type in the land and one that gives the young lads and lasses an opportunity to shine on a big stage. There are a host of exciting talents amongst this year’s field but here are four worth keeping an eye on:STEFANO CHERCHI partners the smart top-weight here, Atalis Bay, for trainer Marco Botti and the spin on this Listed winner (also second behind the speedy Winter Power here in May) is a reflection on his excellent last three years riding in Britain. WIth 55 winners to his name already, from just 477 rides, he’s ticking along at a fantastic strike rate of 12%. This season has been his most productive yet, with 22 winners from 163 rides and with plenty of time to go, Stefano will be setting an impressive new bar in 2021. His partnership with Botti has been excellent for both jockey and trainer, while regular rides for the likes of Amy Murphy, Mark Loughnane have been instrumental in his development. Stefano has even been getting his foot in the door with Saeed bin Suroor’s Godolphin stable, so his is a name we’re sure to be hearing plenty from in the coming years! PIERRE-LOUIS JAMIN has already found his way into the Winner’s Enclosure this week at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, partnering the Tom Dascombe-trained Flaming Rib to Sky Bet Nursery Stakes victory on Wednesday. His 5lb claim made all the difference there and Dascombe isn’t the only trainer to have seen the value in that this season given Pierre-Louis’ talents. Archie Watson, Karl Burke and William Knight are but three of the trainers to have trusted in his skills and they’ve been richly rewarded in 2021 with 16 winners from 115 rides, a very strong 14% strike rate. Watch out when he rides for Burke (15%), Dascombe (29%) or Grant Tuer (50%!) - today’s ride on Rebel At Dawn could well be a winning one.

FAYE McMANOMAN is one of the most trusted apprentices anywhere in the country, racking up almost 900 rides over the past five years and landing the spoils on 67 occasions. Many of those rides have come courtesy of a very productive assoiciation with Nigel Tinkler and the pair team up once again today with Imperium Blue. McManoman and Imperium Blue have made it into the Winner’s Enclosure twice already, including here at York where the pair were successful in the Langleys Solicitors Nursery Stakes back in October 2020. Faye is a go-to claimer for many Yorkshire trainers, including Lawrence Mullaney, Marjorie Fife and Les Eyre and if she were to take the spoils in this race, she would have plenty of local supporters cheering her home! SAFFIE OSBORNE , in an interesting twist of fate, has also partnered Imperium Blue to victory in that horse’s career, back in his two-year-old season at Ripon. That was one of Saffie’s early wins and her career has really taken off since, with over 300 rides under her belt in the last two seasons, including no less than 35 winning performances. Her father, Jamie, has certainly benefitted from his daughter’s talents - of which being a European Championship Eventing gold medallist is another, rather significant one - but she’s ridden successfully for the likes of Ed Walker, Charles Hills and Roger Fell, so she’s already making a name for herself in the racing arena as well. Saffie goes for gold on Digital for Kevin Ryan this afternoon.

The support of Sky Bet sees this race run at £70,000 - so a seriously big stage to help develop a future star. 87

7th Race 5.20 The Sky Bet Apprentice Stakes Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

5f Handicap 0-105 £70,000 3 Centre

See page 94 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A farewell handicap but an added dimension to the contest is that all the riders are still apprentices. Connections can reduce the weight carried by their contender by choosing which apprentice jockey to use; the level of the reduction depends on the past success of that apprentice. You can see this reflected in the bracketed figure after the rider’s name. Faye McManoman has plenty oif success under her belt already and so gets no relief for Imperium Blue, whereas the developing talent of Elle-May Croot lifts the full 7lb from the back of Kevin The Minion. If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until Sunday 5 September. Thank you for your support this week.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The race BLACKROD won at the Newmarket July meeting has produced some smart types in the past and Michael Dods’ colt looks exactly that. Runner-up here on his penultimate start, the son of Mayson looks the one to beat if handling the drop back to the minimum trip. Digital and A Pint Of Bear come here with similarly progressive profiles and they could be in the shake-up. Atalis Bay also warrants consideration on the drop in grade.

STABLESIDE B&B Rooms stablesideyork.co.uk PUZZLE CORNER ANSWERS Guess Who? The 1979 Sky Bet Ebor winner, Sea Pigeon. True Or False?

1. False. Since the race was first run in 1843, only 15 six-year-olds have won, though six of them have won since the year 2000. The most successful age group are the four-year-olds, who account for 62 winners, though only three, Saint Alebe (2003), Purple Moon (2007) and Tiger Cliff (2016) have won since the turn of the Millennium. Next best are three-year-olds, who have won 44 times and then five-year-olds with 41 victories. Horses older than six account for just six wins. 2. True. The actual weight difference in 5st 8lbs (78lbs). The highest weight carried to victory was 10st by Sea Pigeon in 1979, when he eclipsed the previous best of 9st 12lbs set by Corrie Roy in 1883. The lowest winning weight was set by Godfrey in 1844 with jockey John Barwick when he carried just 4st 6lbs. 3. True. Champion jumps jockey, Jonjo O’Neill rode Sea Pigeon in 1979 when the nine-year-old set new records as the oldest horse ever to win and with a record weight. The following March, Sea Pigeon won the first of his two Champion Hurdles with Jonjo again in the saddle. The double paid over 142-1. The only other horse to win the two races is Brown Jack, who won the Champion Hurdle ridden by L.Rees in 1928 and the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap with champion jockey Steve Donoghue three years later. 4. False. Flint Jack, trained by Captain Oswald Bell won at 5-1 in 1922 and returned a year later to win again at double the price. He is the only horse so far to win the race twice. 5. True. Surprisingly for a big handicap, multiple wins for jockeys are pretty rare. The great Victorians George Fordham, Fred Archer and John Osborne won it twice each before Otto Madden became the first to win three times between 1897 and 1901. Gordon Richards rode four winners between 1925 and 1938 before Lester won on Gladness (1958), Primera (1959), Die Hard (1961), Tintagel II (1970) and Jupiter Island (1983) to set a new record. Jamie Spencer with two winners is the only current jockey with more than one victory. York’s Racing Challenge

1. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Mustashry was just behind Lord Glitters in 2018 and he went on to win 2019’s Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, while Lord Glitters himself took Group 1 glory in the Queen Anne and has since bagged further G1 success at Meydan in the Jebel Hatta. 2. Shine So Bright got the better of Laurens by a nose in the 2019 Sky Bet City Of York Stakes and it was a serious effort considering that rival won no less than six Group 1s in three different countries - the Fillies Mile and the Sun Chariot Stakes in the UK, the Prix Saint-Alary, the Prix de Diane and the Prix Rothschild in France, and the Matron Stakes in Ireland. 3. Flint Jack is the only dual winner of the Sky Bet Ebor, all the way back in 1922 & 1923, so Fujaira Prince would be a modern history maker indeed! 4. Purple Moon (2007) and Heartbreak City (2016) both were victorious in today’s feature, but found only one too good at Flemington in the Lexus Melbourne Cup later in the same season. 5. Hot Streak was the 2013 sprinter in question’s suitably speedy name and his finest hour came in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock Park.

Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised.
