Welcome A very warm welcome to York Racecourse for Matchbook Yorkshire Cup Day, wherever you are following it from. We have a tremendous day of racing action in prospect to round off a stellar Dante Festival – with a record five races on terrestrial television on ITV4 and all races on Racing TV, I hope you can follow the action from afar. As the picture for Epsom perhaps has become clearer after Snowfall won the Tattersalls Musidora on Wednesday and Hurricane Lane yesterday’s Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante; attention today switches to the stayers. We are delighted to host leg one of the QIPCO British Champions Series for this division, which will take in the “Cup” races at all the major racing festivals in the months ahead, including the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, back here at the Welcome To Yorkshire Ebor Festival. During the winter, York was honoured to see our flagship race of the season, the Juddmonte International, ranked as the Longines World’s Best Race 2020 based on year end global ratings. The prize fund for this race was recently announced as back at the £1m purse of pre-covid times. That is an indication of the commitment of York Racecourse and its tremendous supporters to back our sport and so bring top class horses to the Knavesmire. Some of those quality thoroughbreds will go to post in today’s seven races, headlined by those star stayers in our feature contest. The likes of Nayef Road from the Middleham stable of Mark Johnston or Red Verdon travelling up from Newmarket under Ed Dunlop’s care, are well established figures at this level. Some young pretenders have also emerged including Sir Ron Priestley who was most impressive at Newmarket earlier this month, it will be fascinating to see them in opposition. Notebooks or iPad to the ready wherever you look today as some highly regarded fillies undertake the Langleys Solicitors EBF Marygate Stakes and Oaks Farm Stables Stakes, a pair of Listed contests. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. After a string of near-misses in Pattern company, Queen Power added the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton to her resumé in authoritative style, giving her trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, a seventh success in the contest.

Keeping an unbeaten record intact and boosting his claims for the Cazoo Derby, Hurricane Lane ran out a tenacious winner of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante for Charlie Appleby and the Godolphin team.

The consistent five-year-old was sent off a strong favourite after a close second in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes on her previous outing and duly justified that status with ease, pulling well clear in the final stages. Tracking the early pace set by Chamade, the mount of Silvestre De Sousa was a little free to begin with, but soon found her rhythm as the field swung around the bend for home. King Power Racing’s mare only needed pushing along to challenge for the lead and once she had stretched past the leader just inside the two-furlong pole, the game was up for the rest who ultimately were chasing in vain. Queen Power is a daughter of the sadly missed sire Shamardal, himself of course a memorable York winner when Royal Ascot was staged on the Knavesmire in 2005, and she quickened clear in similarly powerful style, eventually winning by a superb eight lengths. Assistant trainer James Savage said: “Today everything went right for her, she relaxed and got into a lovely rhythm early doors which meant everything went very smooth. She’s always threatened to do something like that and it’s great to see her do it.”

Sent off a 6/1 chance, the son of the great Juddmonte International winner, Frankel, showed quality, stamina and a superb attitude to get the better of a high-class field. Breaking from the outside stall, William Buick positioned his mount right in the middle of the field for the opening stages of the race, with the Aidan O’Brientrained Roman Empire cutting out some solid fractions on the head of affairs. As the field turned for home, Roman Empire kicked clear of the field and it looked for a moment as if his challengers might not be able to reel him back in under a positive Hollie Doyle ride, but both Hurricane Lane and Megallan responded generously to pressure, staying on strongly to pass the long-time leader. Inside the final furlong, Hurricane Lane battled on bravely to gain the upper hand and kept on well to win by three-quarters of a length from Megallan, with O’Brien’s High Definition running an intruiging Cazoo Derby trial, beaten just two lengths back in third. Cut into a general 15/2 for the Cazoo Derby after the race, his jockey was suitably impressed; “It rode like a good race and this horse will benefit from going over a mile and a half.” said Buick, “He has a lovely attitude and loves nothing more than having a battle.”

It is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, forming part of the second tier of four categories; Listed, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. KNAVESMIRE TIP Plenty of these have claims but none more so than CRAZYLAND, who created a big impression when making a winning debut at Windsor last month. She is a half-sister to the Group 3-winning juvenile Queen Of Bermuda and the daughter of Kodiac should not be underestimated this afternoon. CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are beneﬁting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff. 16

• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? 15 years, starting as summer help in the Bookings Team

• Outside the racedays at York, what do you do the rest of the year?

At Stableside we welcome hotel guests when we are not looking after stable staff, we can’t wait till next Monday, being 17th May, so there is a never a quiet day for us! From school children exploring the wonders of the city, to leisure guests looking for that proper Yorkshire welcome. You will usually ﬁnd me up and down our corridors ensuring everything is just right for our next visitor!

• At the end of the raceday at York Racecourse, tell us what makes it a good one?

Probably under 30,000 steps and where everyone leaves happy, having sampled what I think are the best racing staff facilities in the country, eager for their next visit and at least seven having a winner in the back of their horse box!

• How did you become involved in racing at York?

My family have always been involved, from my Grandfather being an on-course bookmaker and my Dad following in his footsteps. Racing was always going to be my path, I started at the Racecourse as work experience and never left!

• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York

• Thinking of racing personalities, past and present, what question would you most like to ask them? How do you pick a future winner?

• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?

Juddmonte International Day (18th August this year) which you can’t beat for the absolutely high-class racing, nothing gives me a bigger thrill then seeing some of my favourite horses throughout the year battling it out in the Group One feature, which regularly appears in the top 10 races in the world.

Mecca’s Angel

• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?

This is really difficult; I think Mecca’s Angel winning her ﬁrst Coolmore Nunthorpe, so giving Paul Mulrennan his ﬁrst taste of Group 1 glory really sticks in my memory. She reeled in Wesley Ward’s American Raider, Acapulco, and was a real star that day.

• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?

Absolutely this has to be Sea the Stars, I used to have a picture of him in my bedroom! For me he was the complete racehorse, he won over different distances, in different countries and took on all comers and I don’t think they ever truly got to the bottom of him, he always pulled out more. Some people say horses have a look when they know they’re the best and when I saw Sea the Stars in the Parade Ring before his Juddmonte victory he had that look.

• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?

These questions are getting harder! I’m going to go for a “girl power” table here, Katie Walsh, Clare Balding, Henrietta Knight, Denise Coates and York Racecourse’s very own Jane Richardson, what she’s forgotten about York Racecourse is more than I’ll ever know, so we need to make the most of her before her retirement!

• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?

When Marcus caught Brian the Snail, who had managed to get loose in the Stable Yard. Brian didn’t live up to his name, he was extremely fast! 23

FACT FILE: WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

Distance One mile, ﬁve furlongs abt 188yds (2,770 metres)

Prize money £120,000

It had been intended to launch a new two mile handicap in 1926, but racing was cancelled because of the General Strike and so it began 12 months later. After the war it became a Conditions race and in 1966 the distance was reduced to one mile and six furlongs. In 1971 it achieved Group 2 status.

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

The Matchbook Yorkshire Cup is the ﬁrst of the major stayers’ Cup events, what you might term the “Grand Slam”. It pits the established stars against the young pretenders. The status of the race is such that it forms the opening leg of the Long Distance Championship category of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

Ardross

In this case anyway, as Ardross, winner in 1981 and 1982, was the ﬁrst thoroughbred to claim two Matchbook Yorkshire Cups. The previous winner, Stradivarius, make history and became only the second back-to-back winner of the race in 2018 and 2019.

Incredibly, given Irish success in almost every sphere of modern horse racing, this race has always eluded raiders from the Emerald Isle. Southern France pushed Stradivarius all the way in 2019, but apart from that, their best effort in the last decade was from the then Thomas Carmody-trained Royal Diamond who ﬁnished third to Glen’s Diamond in 2013. Perhaps Aidan O’Brien’s runner this afternoon - Santiago - can break the succession of British-trained winners?

The legendary Cecil Boyd-Rochfort bagged seven victories in a career that spanned four decades – The Scout II (1931), Kingstone (1945), Premonition (1954), Dickens (1960), Sagacity (1962), Raise You Ten (1964), and Apprentice (1965). Saeed bin Suroor and Sir Michael Stoute both have trained ﬁve winners, after the latter’s Royal success of Dartmouth in 2017. John Gosden has two successes in the race thanks to the great Stradivarius, but is not represented this afternoon.

LEADING RIDER? Lester Piggott has eight wins - Pandofell (1961), Aunt Edith (1966), Knockroe (1972), Bruni (1976), Bright Finish (1977), Noble Saint (1980) and Ardross (1981, 1982). Of the current crop Frankie Dettori leads the way with six winners – Arzanni (1991), Kayf Tara (2000), Marienbard (2001), Mamool (2003) & Stradivarius (2018 & 2019). Ryan Moore, partnering Santiago today, has four winners after his most recent success on Dartmouth in 2017.

Plenty of local winners down the years with both the Peacock and Elsey families making their mark. Middleham-based Harry Peacock and his son Dick both saddled a winner, as did the legendary Malton trainer Captain Charles Elsey, followed later by his son Bill. In more modern times Zindabad landed the spoils for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston in 2002 as did Glen’s Diamond for 3000 man, Richard Fahey in 2013, whilst Clever Cookie kept the Yorkshire end up with victory for Peter Niven. But there could not be a more local winner than Templestow who took the very ﬁrst running in 1927, for he carried the colours of Colonel Hugh Stobart, a former Steward at York who lived at nearby Middlethorpe Hall, now a popular resting place for owners and racegoers alike. KNAVESMIRE TIP Santiago was disappointing on his seasonal debut in the Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes but a much better performance here would come as no surprise. However, Mark Johnston looks to have the strongest hand with consistent duo Nayef Road and SIR RON PRIESTLEY. The former wasn’t far behind the legendary Stradivarius on his comeback run in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes and he is likely to show up well again, but his hat-trick seeking stablemate Sir Ron Priestley looks the one to beat. KNAVESMIRE TIP TOM COLLINS wasn’t at his best on stable debut at Thirsk earlier this month, but he was beaten less than six lengths despite ﬁnishing down the ﬁeld and could bounce back on just his second start for William Haggas. The four-year-old is on a fair mark of 85 and could prove too strong for penalised Haydock winner Boardman, who wouldn’t want the ground to dry out too much.
