THE BETFAIR TINGLE CREEK FESTIVAL SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER 2020

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Sandown Park for Betfair Tingle Creek Chase Day. We’ve partnered once again with Aintree, another Jockey Club Racecourse, and Racing TV, in order to bring you all the races from the Becher Chase card. You will see in your racecard we’ve included 14 races in chronological order, with live coverage of all races being shown on the big screens at both courses. We really do hope you enjoy this action packed ‘double header’! We are pleased to support the safe return of spectators to our racecourses. Your raceday now will likely be quite different to previous visits but we’re determined to ensure you have a great day with us. For the safety of yourself and others please adhere to the social distancing rules and wear face coverings at all times, unless eating or drinking. What a fantastic day’s racing we have in store, including two Grade 1 races; the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase and the Planteur At Chapel Stud Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, not to mention the Betfair Exchange Back And Lay London National Handicap Chase to sign the day off in style. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to today’s sponsors for their generous sponsorship again this year. The Tingle Creek Chase has a rich history having first run in 1979 and named in honour of Tingle Creek, a popular National Hunt racehorse in the 1970s. The race has an impressive list of previous champions with the likes of Desert Orchid, Moscow Flyer, Kauto Star, Sprinter Sacre and, attempting a second win today, Altior, taking their place on the roll of honour. We hope you have a great day with us and I look forward to welcoming you back in the New Year. PHIL WHITE London Region Director for Jockey Club Racecourses

A very well-related individual, DARGIANNINI looked a most exciting prospect when making a winning debut in a Sedgefield bumper in October, always in the firing line in a well-run race and going clear impressively for a 20-length success. The type to make his mark in a big way over hurdles, he can come out on top, with Mackenberg and Straw Fan Jack heading up the dangers.

He’s back again to try to record an historic Becher Chase treble and the Robert Walford-trained veteran is clearly a huge player given his love for Aintree and the National fences. He does run from an 8lb higher mark here than for his last win though and that could drag him back to the pack.

HHH LE BREUIL Seventh in this last season from a 9lb higher mark, the Ben Pauling-trained winner of the 2019 National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival has long appealed as a potential Grand National type and he looks on a good mark here not only to win this, but to go on and run well in the April showpiece as a result.

CALETT MAD

HHHHH

Although he’s been off the track for almost 700 days, Nigel TwistonDavies’ only entry in the race could well turn out to be well-handicapped and well-suited to a spin over these National fences. This eight-year-old is a smart type, already a Listed winner over hurdles and a Grade 3 second over fences in the 2019 Classic Chase at Warwick.

Always prominently-positioned in a competitive contest by jockey Adam Wedge, Esprit Du Large came home the strongest of all to spring a 14/1 surprise for Evan Williams. 9/4 Favourite Torpillo, Summerville Boy and Nube Negra helped set a generous early pace, but when the 2018 Tolworth Hurdle winner fell at the seventh and Torpillo began to weaken out of it at the Pond Fence, it left Esprit Du Large and Nube Negra to battle it out up the hill. But it was the Welsh-trained fiveyear-old who saw the trip out best after almost being joined over the last, stretching two lengths clear of his gallant rival at the line.

HHHHH ALLMANKIND Although four-year-olds don’t have the best record in this race, the Dan Skelton-trained youngster made a super chasing debut at Warwick and his juvenile hurdling form certainly entitles him to his place in this classy field.

HHHH GA LAW Another four-year-old who, along with the Paul Nicholls-trained Hitman, is very capable of playing a hand here. Ga Law’s runaway Grade 2 Rising Stars Novice Chase win at Wincanton in November was a serious effort from the front and he’s open to further improvement.

A small but select field and cases can be made for each member of the sextet. ELDORADO ALLEN was a fortunate winner at Cheltenham last time and has to concede weight to a trio of exciting 4-y-os in Allmankind, Ga Law and Hitman. Conversely, there’s real substance to his form and his sure-footed jumping will stand him in good stead round here in what is bound to be a strongly-run race.

KEY CONTENDERS ALTIOR The 2018 winner of the race, Nicky Henderson’s brilliant ten-year-old is back to try to add to his one Tingle Creek crown. He’s likely the best horse in the race, but can he be caught out by younger legs?

HHHHH POLITOLOGUE Another previous winner of the race, this time in 2017, this will be Politologue’s first run of the season - a repeat of his Champion Chase victory last season would give him a great chance.

HHHH GREANETEEN A big improver this season, Paul NIcholls further strengthens his hand in the race with this Haldon Gold Cup winner. This six-year-old is on an upward curve and hasn’t reached the peak of his ability just yet.

National Hunt racing by nature breeds heroes, equine and human, who capture a special place in the public’s heart. The legacy of 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds continues to live on as racing returns to the scene of his greatest triumph. He was a horse so hugely and warmly acclaimed that practically the whole population of Lambourn, where he was trained, turned out to welcome him home after his outstanding Aintree victory under 11st 9lb. At the village’s Open Day and all over the country he drew similar crowds when making public appearances. His honesty and battling determination were the qualities that made people love him, and these attributes were never displayed more vividly than in his final race, Cheltenham’s Cotswold Chase, in January 2017. That day, Many Clouds literally grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat when fighting back in a duel up the famous hill to overcome the brilliant Thistlecrack but tragically he passed away. Trevor Hemmings’ third winner of the Grand National (following Hedgehunter and Ballabriggs) was foaled in 2007, by Cloudings out of Bobbing Back. He was trained by Oliver Sherwood and ridden by Leighton Aspell, who partnered him in all his 27 career starts. He won 12 races worth £927,732 in prize money, completing two Grand Nationals and winning the 2014 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury - the only horse to have won both big races in the same season. His loyal groom and friend Chris (CJ) Jerdin looked after him throughout his career at Sherwood’s Rhonehurst yard and reckons “Clouds” loved all the attention, cameras and people visiting him, while his trainer simply describes him as “the horse of a lifetime, a real soldier, one who would go over a cliff for you.” His jockey Leighton Aspell agreed: “Many Clouds was way above anything else I have ridden he just had the whole package.” He is immortalised in Grand National history, not only on the boards of previous winners, but in the hearts of the public.

A stunning performance from Hogan’s Height marked last year’s renewal of the Grand Sefton and it was all the more incredible as it was his first run over fences for 13 months. After travelling and jumping sweetly under Tom Cannon, the eight-year-old hit the front two out and proceeded to gallop 16 lengths clear of the field, making a mockery of his mark of 134. He’s likely to be back at Aintree this year for the Grand National or the Topham in April and could become another in a long line of Grand Sefton winners to go well in one of those big races in the Spring.

The Nicholls yard excel in this race, and their representative carries the famous silks of J P McManus. He warmed up for this with a brilliant win at this venue, and races off only a 9lb higher mark, which may prove to be lenient from the handicapper. He will be a tough one to beat if running a similar race here.

HHHHH

SPRINGTOWN LAKE Second behind Modus a month ago was Springtown Lake, but with a 9lb swing in the weights and likely softer ground could mean that the Philip Hobbs-trained eight-year-old could drastically reduce the eight-length gap between the two. He’s got plenty of smart form in the book and should go well in a race that suits him nicely.

FLYING ANGEL A Grade 1 Manifesto Novices’ Chase winner here at Aintree back in 2017, Flying Angel has become a solid handicap chaser, running in all the big races yet winning just once from a mark of 140 in November 2019. After a below-par showing at Ascot on his reappearance run this season, he’s back down to that last winning mark and could be a danger to all.

PLAY SMARTER

Lots with chances so at the likely odds DIDERO VALLIS is worth siding with to build on his good fifth here 12 months ago off a 2lb higher mark with his yard firmly among the winners. Huntsman Son made an impressive winning return at Wetherby and this good jumper is fancied to go well too with in-form Springtown Lake and veteran Sametegal also well worth considering in a very open handicap.

PLAY SMARTER

The ease in which MISTER COFFEY came through from the back to score impressively over C&D last time sticks in the mind and, with more to come, he’s well fancied to defy a rise despite this tougher assignment. Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
