Make an impact while celebrating our 13 years

Matthew’s Hope serves the homeless men, women, and children of our community and welcomes all individuals, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, economic status, religious belief, disease/diagnosis, sexual orientation, or employment. ​ omelessness is defined by the H United States government as when a person “lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and if they sleep in a shelter designated for temporary living accommodations or in places not designated for human habitation.”

The ministry does not take a traditional approach to serve needs within the community. Our overall goal is to create an organization that helps the homeless to grow emotionally, mentally, spiritually, physically, and vocationally. Through relationship building and access to a wide range of services and education; we engender an environment where each guest, irrespective of ability, can cognitively and demonstratively achieve some semblance of growth and success for themselves.

FOUNDER’S FORUM March 30th marks our 13th Anniversary here at Matthew’s Hope and recently I’ve taken some time to reflect on all that I have witnessed and have had the privilege to be a part of in the Kingdom building ministry we call Matthew’s Hope Ministries. Throughout this journey and the year after year growth, I have been called many things… Polarizing, Free Spirited, Gruff, Brutally Honest, Visionary, a Jesus Freak (my favorite). But the one that really got my attention was Radical Fundamentalist.

A number of years ago, after planting a church, I had a pastor from another church contact me and asked if we could meet. He said that he wanted to pick my brain on outreach and my Kingdom Building mentality. In any case, after I had shared with him some of my thoughts and theological views, he leaned in towards me with his focused green eyes, took ahold of me by my wrist and in an inquisitive voice said to me, “Scott, you are a Radical Fundamentalist... You actually believe this stuff.”

At first, I was a bit taken aback but the only response I had for him was that yes, I do believe in this “stuff” and that I have been saved to serve a Radical God that has given me a Radical Freedom to walk on water! Here we are, thirteen years later serving God in a radical way through Matthew’s Hope!

Matthew’s Hope is a ministry of reconciliation born out of my own need to be reconciled to the One who created us all. It exists to reconcile people to God and to one another. This is done through gaining an honest understanding of His truth while biblically living out His word serving our neighbors, scouring its richness, and discipleship through inviting others into the journey. Our mission is to live, love, and serve like Jesus.

Living – Walking with those that Jesus walked with.

Loving – Helping the hurting to find healing and hope.

Serving – Equipping people to pass along the hope they found in Jesus by serving others.

While we are not perfect, we strive to do all that we can do to shower those we serve with the Grace of Jesus. In all things we have done, are doing, and will continue to do; we are called to live up to this verse, in which our ministry’s namesake is rooted in – Matthews 25:35-36 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

These past thirteen years, we have been blessed with so many amazing team members, wonderful volunteers, and dedicated community partners.

I want to thank everyone who has had a part in making Matthew’s Hope what it is today. So here’s to the first thirteen years and to the many more years to come!

ministry has had over the past 13 years. Because of everyone that has been a part of Matthew’s Hope over the years, our mission of “Help Us. Help Them. Help Themselves” has been realized over and over again.

Over the course of the past 13 years, Matthew’s Hope Ministries has taken on massive growth, which has increased our opportunities to serve the homeless men, women and families in West Orange County and now in Central Brevard County. President and CEO Scott Billue founded Matthew’s Hope more than a decade ago with the intention of getting homeless residents and families back on their feet and off the streets. That critical mission still holds true today.

What started as a temporary shelter for the homeless during freezing weather conditions, has rapidly expanded multiple times over the years. Today, Matthew’s Hope encompasses our flagship outreach campus in Winter Garden, two preschools and daycares, our new campus in Cocoa, two workshops, and multiple transitional housing units.

Thanks to the tremendous resources we have, along with the dedicated staff and volunteers of Matthew’s Hope, we’re providing much-needed access to social and government services, medical and mental healthcare, clothing and hygiene care.

These are just some of the opportunities for our guests to help themselves towards a life of self-sustainability for the numerous communities we serve.

During the pandemic era of Matthew’s Hope, while the doors of our outreach center were temporarily closed, our services continued to be provided to the vulnerable men, women and children of West Orange County by taking our services mobile and directly to the homeless.

While our campus has long since been reopened to provide all of our services to the homeless, our signature mobile outreach program is still going strong today; continuing

So, from the entire team at Matthew’s Hope Ministries, we thank everyone who has made our first 13 years of success a reality and we look towards the future to see how Matthew’s Hope continues to grow and continues to serve the homeless men, women, and children of Central Florida.

In 2022, Matthew’s Hope Ministries embarked on an ambitious journey to open a second campus to expand our reach to the homeless men, women and families of Central Brevard County. With the acquisition of our new campus in Cocoa, the dreams of our CEO Scott Billue are coming to fruition. Each day the Cocoa campus takes another step closer towards providing life-changing services to those in need in Brevard County. Staff is being hired, volunteers recruited, and construction rapidly moving forward every day.

How Firm Foundation Preschool is a Preschool and Daycare – Combining the Two to Help Our Families and Students Achieve Their Goals Meagan Galamback

Many families use preschool and daycare interchangeably, but the benefits of daycare and preschool are not the same. At Matthew’s Hope Firm Foundation, our preschool program has been developed to meet the learning goals of the children we work with and the goals and needs of the families we serve.

The Goal of Preschool vs. the Goal of Daycare A Preschool Program • Ensures young children between the ages of two and five have a safe and engaging environment • Prepares children to enter kindergarten with an emphasis on early education, both academic and social/emotional • May offer different methodologies (such as our Montessori-based environment) which can help parents tie the way that their child learns into their parenting style • Often follow a school year schedule with time off for the summer and holidays A Daycare Program • Provides safe childcare for young children, and many go from infancy to school-aged • Generally offers more free play with a focus on social interaction, a

wider age range and longer hours • May offer flexible childcare options with drop-in care, after-school care, and holiday break care • May provide more scheduling options What Are Some Similarities Between Preschool and Daycares Firm Foundation Preschool aims to provide our children with a safe place for whole-child growth, including social-emotional development, play-based learning, physical activity, and developing their communication skills. Children’s brains are developing rapidly during their early years and nurturing connections between a child and their parent/ teachers plays a big role in healthy brain development.

It is very important for families to look for high-quality interactions between children and the childcare provider. Our children often spend more time in their learning environment than they do at home, so it is important that children feel safe, loved and cared for in this environment.

A healthy early learning environment should allow children to have free and structured play, hands-on learning through sensory play, and plenty of outside time. Music, reading, and art are also important parts of a curriculum-rich learning environment.

When considering childcare options, it is important to understand that the primary focus of early childhood education is, or at least should be social emotional development.

Children must begin to focus on life skills, like empathy and be set on a path to responsible decision-making.

Our Montessori-based environment sets our students up for increased

confidence, independence and dayto-day practical life skills to achieve these goals.

Learning Standards in a Preschool Classroom Pre-K is the final year for a preschooler before entering kindergarten. More academic emphasis is placed on this age group, however, academics are part of all of our Firm Foundation early learning goals for each school year. Healthy, achievable goals begin in our classrooms upon entry, as early as 12 months, in our classrooms.

Our Firm Foundation students who entered kindergarten after our preschool program met, and in most cases, exceeded the expectation for entry into kindergarten.

How Firm Foundation Preschool Combines Preschool and Daycare Our Firm Foundation Preschool program is committed to continuing to provide a high-quality early learning environment by providing highly qualified early childhood professionals and high-quality learning materials to support our Faith/Montessori-based curriculum.

Our preschool offers extended care for families over holiday breaks and holidays when most preschools are closed, we open our extended care and summer camp to students who have previously been students of Firm Foundation Preschool, and we offer a summer camp program for families who need year-round childcare, and we ensure child-care availability for elementary-aged children of our Matthew’s Hope Moving Forward Program guests.

RETHINKING HOMELESSNESS What would it be like to be homeless?

Have you ever thought about that? I sure have and it is my hope that I can help you rethink how you see homelessness. So, while you’re reading this today I would encourage you to take a moment to stop and think about this reality. The reality is that most of us are just a paycheck away from experiencing the challenges that our guest faces each and every day.

Many questions come to mind when the community talks about homelessness. For example, what do we do about homelessness as a society? Do we open a shelter?

Do we have an answer to homelessness?

Often with shelters if you are not in line by 1:00 - 2:00 pm you won’t have a spot that night in the shelter. So, how does this really help a person who has or wants to work in order to move forward?

Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime -M. Loane 10

How about this question that often gets brought up during discussions about the homeless? Do we open a soup kitchen?

How do these services really help a homeless person move forward?

Sure, it gives them shelter for the night and a little food in their bellies. In these cases, are we really giving them back their dignity?

What has always been so important to me in any work I’ve done is helping people move forward, whatever that looks like.

Coaching people is my passion - “Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime.” Did you think that was from the Bible? I did at one time. It’s not, this is a well-quoted verse that comes directly from

the Common Growth by, M. Loane Published in 1911.

If we are not willing to help our homeless people start their lives over at a basic level, we are not helping them. We cannot just give them tools and not teach them how to use them. Would I hand an infant a drill? Or hand a teenager keys to a car without any driving instruction? Never!

So, with this being said, I invite you to come visit with me and take a tour of Matthew’s Hope Ministries, you’ll hear us say, putting me in a garage does not make me a car. I’m still a human, not a car. So putting a homeless person in a house does not make them any less homeless. Until they are retaught the tools to succeed, how can really we expect them to?

We pride ourselves here at Matthew’s Hope for our Moving Forward program.

This is one of the many things Matthews Hope offers to those in need in our community. We look at each individual person and not just the label “homeless”. We guide them and help them restore themselves from the mistakes of their past.

Then after that journey, we can walk alongside them as they move forward towards a life of independence and self-sustainability.

We equip them with building blocks to give them a firm foundation and to help them be successful citizens who will want to give back to our society.

As you can see, this has never been just a job for me, these are my people. The people I get to get up for every day and help even in the littlest of ways. Because I see them for who they are - I see mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers.

So, with this being said, I invite you to come to visit with me and take a tour of Matthew’s Hope Ministries. Hopefully, you’ll be able to open your heart to see them the way I do - they are people, my people.

The other day I went through the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru and it was $8 for coffee and a bacon egg and cheese sandwich. This got me thinking about the common question we often receive from the homeless on the side of the road. “Do you have any spare change?”

This question is uncomfortable for most of us. And now given this inflationary economy, what would “spare change” actually accomplish? How will $1, $5, or even $10 benefit our friend on the side of the road? There has to be a better way!

Thankfully, Matthew’s Hope has programs that will take your “spare change” and multiply it so your dollars go further. In addition to the food do-

nations we receive at our food pantry, Matthew’s Hope often uses the dollars it receives to purchase food and clothing for homeless guests at wholesale prices. For example, Matthew’s Hope will often purchase t-shirts for as little as $2.00 each.

Matthew’s Hope offers its homeless guests “Pastor Bucks”. Guests are provided Matthew’s Hope Pastor Bucks “money” to spend in the food pantry.

If they want more “bucks” to spend, Matthew’s Hope has work opportunities which give them additional ways to earn more Effort Points to be spent in the pantry.

THROUGH THE YEARS

MOVING FORWARD PROGRAM Since 2010, the Moving Forward Program has evolved to become a multi-faceted list of options from which a guest may choose to engage. The intent is to offer many “levels” of entry that seek to meet a person where they are, yet challenge those who desire more for their life than their present circumstances to move closer to who they may become.

The manila-colored options of “Serving First Time Guests” and “Meeting Basic Needs” are self-explanatory.

These options occur within the Tuesday Ministries Services Day. The gray-colored options of “Getting Started,” “Showing Effort” and “Working Part-Time” are all opportunities for guests to earn Effort Points that can then be used to obtain items of need.

These options also offer a chance for somebody to demonstrate their work ethic and desire to rebuild and repurpose their life, as well as build self-worth and restore dignity.

The “Working Full-Time” option, whether attained in the combination of work external to Matthew’s Hope Ministries or attained entirely through the ministry, opens the door to housing assistance, possibly in one of the ministries’ Transitional Housing units located in Winter Garden, Florida.

The purple-colored options of “Attaining Graduate Assistant” and “Completing the Program” are the final steps to walk alongside a formerly homeless person as they prepare for a life of independence and self-sustainability.

No easy task for any person, and a cause for celebration in our shared community!

The key to each of the options of the Matthew’s Hope Ministries Moving Forward Program is choice. Each guest must choose where they desire to be, and be ready, willing and able to work to earn their path--much as is in real life.

MOBILE MINISTRY RESPONSE TEAMS & OUTREACH CENTER SERVICES

Dignity and trust built through food, clothing, hygiene and meeting other basic needs.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, staff members and volunteers serve many of the “least of these” of our community. Hundreds of people are served weekly.

Guests arrive at our Matthew’s Hope Outreach Center located at 611 Business Park Blvd. in Winter Garden between 7:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., check in**, and enjoy a hot breakfast and lunch & dinner to go. Each is offered a warm shower, shave, a haircut, laundry service, and new clothing as needed. They can visit one of our Medical Team, shop for nonperishable food items in the Garden of Eatin’ food pantry or select hygiene items through a volunteer personal shopper.

Some guests visit with staff members who assist them with various benefits, identification cards or other services. Other guests and volunteers simply visit, play games, and share in fellowship with others.

Most importantly, every guest is shown the Love of Christ through the Call to Serve as detailed in the book of Matthew 25:35-40, from which the ministry derives its name.

Each guest, in their own unique and special way, departs at the end of each Ministry Service Day better for having been present, and better prepared to “hide in plain sight” in our shared community.

Any and all who are within the scope of “Who We Serve” including any person who is currently homeless and has some connection to our community is welcome to arrive at the Outreach Center to participate in the services offered. *NOTE First Time Guests participate in an extended Intake Process, including a background check. Only those with prior sex-related criminal offenses are exempted from becoming a welcomed guest of the ministry, for legal purposes.

DIRECTOR SPOTLIGHT VALARY BRETT Bobby McCulley-Stacy

Those who have a background experiencing hardships in life often can be the brightest light of joy and have the biggest heart to help those around them. With a strong academic background and real-world professional skills, Matthew’s Hope Ministries welcomes Valary Brett as the new Brevard County Campus Director.

“I grew up in Jersey, in a house full of chaos and turmoil.” Stated Valary Brett when asked about her childhood and where her call to ministry stems from. “We were very poor, moving from place to place, and always needing help ourselves. My mom always had a heart and passion to help others. Even in the poorest of times, she always stopped to give somebody in need something to eat.”

“When we were stable, we started feeding the homeless in Asbury Park out of the back of my mom’s van every night. We would make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and provided blankets, hats, coats, gloves, scarves, anything we could get for very cheap or free.” Valary

recalled. “We passed them out to all the homeless underneath the boardwalk. I can remember the light in their faces as we become someone that showed them, that they were cared for.”

Valary’s mother instilled in her a heart and passion to help those in need around her each and every day.

Because of her passion to help others, Valary obtained her bachelor’s degree in biomedical nursing and science from Eastern Florida State University.

Thanks to the life lessons she learned at an early age and her desire to help others, Valary has worked in a hospital for over twenty years caring for those in need.

Experienced in event coordination, with a proven leadership and organizing background, Valary will be a strong leader for Matthew’s Hope’s new campus in Cocoa.

Valary has been married to her husband Bruce, who also works at Matthew’s Hope Ministries, for nearly twenty years. They have seven beautiful children and two

grandchildren. Besides helping others, Valary enjoys music, reading, and spending time with her family.

“We are almost empty-nesters, and we are excited to be able to travel and enjoy life together.” Stated Valary. “We have done ministry and community outreaches for over ten years. As the Brevard County Campus Director, I’m excited that I get to continue my mom’s legacy by working in a ministry that is very near and dear to my heart.”

LOVE AND GRACE ARE LEADING THE WAY FORWARD BREVARD COUNTY CAMPUS DIRECTOR’S THOUGHTS Valary Brett and Bobby McCulley-Stacy

What amazes me about Matthews Hope Ministries is the ability of the ministry to be fluid and adapt to the ever-growing and changing needs of the homeless population that we serve. The progress that has been displayed throughout the years has been a blessing to so many of those in need in West Orange County.

The impact of the progress that Matthew’s Hope has made has already been felt by so many of the homeless guests we serve right here in Brevard County. I have seen lives changed; not only the guests but the volunteers and staff are forever changed by the love and grace that

Matthew’s Hope eludes.

I see a future full of hope, love, and promise as Matthew’s Hope Ministries moves forward with helping our guests help themselves to have a better quality of life that’s rooted in self-sustainability and independence.

Being on campus every day here in Cocoa, I’ve seen all the progress from the ground up and the investments that have been made into ensuring we have the necessary resources and facilities to truly care for the needs of the most vulnerable in our society. Our shower facility is currently under construction and our Montessori preschool and daycare

here in Cocoa are now open and lives are being impacted beautifully every day.

I’m excited to see the entire operation here at the Brevard County Campus finally come to fruition and to be able to fully serve our guests here in Cocoa, Rockledge, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island and Port St. John like we do currently in Winter Garden.

The last thirteen years of Matthew’s Hope Ministries have been that of growth and miracles for those we serve. Can’t wait to see and experience all the life-changing stories that we have here over the next thirteen years!

EXCITING GROWTH BRINGS EXCITING FUTURE ORANGE COUNTY CAMPUS DIRECTOR’S THOUGHTS Andrea Pumar and Bobby McCulley-Stacy

Looking back at the growth we’ve experienced last year I can’t help but reflect and think about all the progress that Matthew’s Hope Ministries has had over the past thirteen years.

The Orange County Campus has seen so much growth in both the staff and volunteers we have, as well as the needs of the homeless men, women and children we serve daily. Our team in Winter Garden is mission-driven and everyone is on board with making our mission of “Help Us. Help Them. Help Themselves” a reality every day. I can’t thank the team enough for being so solid and strong in their roles and contributions to the team overall.

Each day I get to see how we utilize technologies such as Square and our KDS System to keep track of not only the number of guests we serve, but also what resources we are supporting our guests with each and every outreach day. As the campus director, these reports allow us to keep track of our resources and efficiently rally our community supporters and volunteers to secure the appropriate donations needed when they’re needed.

One area that makes me so proud and leaves me simply amazed is the work that’s coming out of our Matthew’s Hope Chest Shop and the one-of-a-kind artisan crafts and furniture that’s being sold in

our store. Our staff and guests are doing amazing things every day, like repairing and repurposing customer-brought furniture pieces, building furniture that’s being utilized at both of our campuses, and creating such unique items that are for sale in our store.

Looking forward, I’m excited to see all the progress that’s being made in Brevard County and can’t wait for the campus in Cocoa to be offering all the same services we provide in Winter Garden. The future is bright for Matthew’s Hope Ministries, and I can’t wait to see how our mission and ministry make changes in the lives of the homeless guests we serve.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A VOLUNTEER?

Community members get involved in many unique ways, falling into five main categories: 1) Tuesday & Thursday Ministries Services Day Volunteers arrive at the Outreach Center each week by 7:45 a.m., engage in a brief Volunteer Prep Meeting, and then step into a dozen different roles that serve the most basic needs of those who arrive. Most stay to volunteer until at least 1:30 p.m. when services conclude.

2) Skilled Volunteers Several community members with specific

skills and experience volunteer in a variety of roles, from administrative support, computer skills, grant writing assistance, financial counseling, life skill and Bible study class facilitation, and more!

3) Group Service Projects Student groups, church groups, meet-up groups, corporate groups, or any gathering of people can partner with ministry leaders to plan a service project. Projects may vary depending on the ministry’s needs and are fully determined based on the age group, size, time frame and season of service.

4) Design a Project Many students and groups have created their own ways of having a meaningful impact on the ministry and its work. The sky is the limit with creative ideas! Many have conducted item collection drives, designed cards and crafts to share with guests, and prepared meal items or snacks to share on Tuesdays, Thursdays and more!

5) Prepare and Serve Meals A rotating group of teams assume one meal (breakfast, lunch or to-go dinner) for each Tuesday & Thursday Ministries Services Day of the month. They prepare or purchase the food, and then have the option to deliver or stay and serve the meal to fifty or more guests each week.

There are also opportunities to prepare a meal for our Tuesday and Thursday Life Skill Classes and Bible Studies.
