A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Dear friends and families, I am honored to welcome you to the 2026-2027 performance season at Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA)! This year’s incredible lineup of performances and events showcases the immense talent and creativity of OCSA students – a fitting way to commemorate our milestone 40th Anniversary season! As we embark upon this landmark year, I find myself reflecting on our school’s remarkable history and the community that has made these past four decades possible – from teachers and visiting artists to parents and students. A group of visionaries came together with a bold and inspiring idea in 1987 to create an after-school arts program on the campus of Los Alamitos High School. Over the past 40 years, OCSA has grown into a one-of-a-kind charter school serving nearly 2,450 students across 17 conservatories. I am so proud of OCSA as we know it today. While we have grown from our modest roots, our mission has remained the same: to provide young people with a place where artistic and academic excellence can thrive together and students can be challenged, supported, encouraged, and inspired. Our ability to provide this unique environment and high-level programming is due in no small part to the support and leadership of the individuals, corporations, and institutions in the following groups. They have my heartfelt appreciation for their role in our continued success. Board of Trustees Season Sponsors Foundation Board of Directors Strategic & Educational Partners Emeritus Board Encore President’s Circle People Supporting OCSA (PSO) Finally, I would like to recognize the vital contributions of our parents, alumni, administrators, faculty and staff, members of the local community, and – most importantly – our talented student artists. We believe deeply in nurturing their creativity and growth, and it is incredibly rewarding to see the results of their hard work in front of you today. Thank you for being a part of this performance season and our anniversary celebrations. I now invite you to immerse yourself in the artistry, energy, and inspiration that define the OCSA experience. With gratitude,
Teren M. Shaffer President & CEO Orange County School of the Arts
We provide an unparalleled arts and academic education in a creative, challenging, and nurturing environment to a diverse group of students who are passionate about the arts, preparing them to reach their highest potential.
Established in 1987, the nationally recognized Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) offers a dynamic school culture that enables students to flourish as artists and scholars. The school currently serves a diverse student body of approximately 2,440 students in grades 7-12 from more than 100 cities throughout Southern California. In addition to offering a challenging college-preparatory academic program that produces high-achieving, motivated scholars, OCSA provides aspiring young artists with the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish in one of 17 arts conservatories. Each year, more than 200 concerts, recitals, staged performances, and exhibitions are presented at a variety of venues in Orange County and throughout the world, providing students with the unique experience of entertaining and inspiring thousands of audience members. OCSA is a donation-dependent public charter school; no student is offered or denied admission based on financial capacity. The school’s rigorous academic education coupled with advanced arts training has impacted many students, molding generations of creative thinkers, leaders, artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Marriage Proposal
Great art holds a mirror up to the audience, Anton Chekhov is truly a master mind in this aspect, in all of his work he seems to tackle a very poignant truth that we all carry with us and that is this; The only person standing in the way of your happiness is YOU. All of his characters long for a better life, there are always instances of wishing they lived somewhere else or did anything else or were with anyone else but truly…they are the only ones that are capable of making that brave leap into changing their circumstances if they really want to…but they don’t…because isn’t complacency the more comfortable option? What’s more human than that? In the case of The Marriage Proposal, we have Lomov and Natalia, star crossed lovers that could rival Romeo and Juliet solely based on how much they are meant to be with each other, there is just one problem, they can’t seem to put their extremely petty ego’s aside, arguments ensue that are not just pointless but downright stupid. Hopefully they can reconcile and just be happy, or maybe they will just keep getting in their own way and let pride take the wheel. A note on setting: I wanted to set this in a way that we can see ourselves in these people and have SEEN these people in our culture and media, so our production takes place now in 2026 in or around Montana where there are vast meadow lands. Our Tschubukov and Lomov families are very successful farmland owners with proud Russian roots. Their wealth from the land they own has maybe gotten to their heads a bit, or maybe their ego was always there.
Significant Other
Relationships change. Some things stay, some things leave, and some things we desperately want to hold onto simply cannot be held forever. Significant Other asks us to look closely at the timelines we create for ourselves, the milestones we imagine we should have reached, the relationships we think should have happened, and the futures we assume are waiting for us. Have these hopes quietly become expectations? We begin measuring our lives against others, finding ourselves on a timeline we may not even remember choosing or maybe one that doesn’t even exist. Jordan Berman is searching for his place in life and love alongside his three best girl friends. We watch Jordan navigate friendship, love, and loss. Is he somehow missing out on the life everyone else seems to be living? Are we looking at life through deficits or fullness? Are we trusting in our own path or living in comparison? Some have labeled this piece an ‘unromantic rom-com’. I’m interested in how much value is placed on romantic partnership, that we can sometimes overlook the many forms love takes. The friends who show up, the people who know us, the relationships that shape us, and the communities that hold us. Significant Other invites us to engage with our relationship to ourselves, our own loneliness and what it means to be alone. Harmon presents the difficult truth that nothing is promised or permanent with humor and humanity. Significant Other is, for me, a reminder to loosen our grip on the life we think we are supposed to be living and to open ourselves up to the life that is actually here. To the people who love us. To the people we love. To the moments we cannot keep. *** SPECIAL THANKS

OPPORTUNITIES TO INSPIRE, IMPACT, AND INVEST IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARTIST-SCHOLARS CREATE ENRICHING OPPORTUNITIES The Hearts for the Arts campaign provides additional support for arts conservatory needs beyond each conservatory’s annual budget. Donations help to fund special equipment and supplies, performances, field trips, and other arts enrichment opportunities for our talented OCSA students.
HELP STUDENTS IN NEED The Artist Scholar Sponsorship Program supports economically disadvantaged students who attend OCSA. Donations help to fund the arts conservatory portion of their school day and ensure they have access to the full OCSA experience, including yearbooks, technology, school supplies, and more.
PROVIDE GUEST ARTIST EXPERIENCES The Carole Pickup Master Artist Series supports high-profile visiting artists who create meaningful experiences for our student artists. Donations help to bring master artists and industry leaders to OCSA’s campus to share their career stories and expertise with students through residencies, master classes, lectures, and performances.
READY TO GET INVOLVED? To learn more about these important campaigns or give today, please visit www.ocsarts.net/Give. We would love to talk with you about how you can support OCSA’s talented students! Please contact Anna Belmer Jackson, Director of Development, at anna.jackson@ocsarts.net.
