Keeping you informed and connected

Hey NMC Family,
I wanted to take a moment to celebrate a huge milestone for our Lead Pastor, Rob McDowell. The year 2025 marks 20 years of Rob serving at NMC, and we are incredibly grateful for his faithful leadership to our church. I have the unique privilege of calling him not only my pastor, but also my boss— and more importantly—my friend.
When our team asked me to share something about Rob’s two decades at NMC, I asked myself: How do you summarize an icon? The only fitting way was to break his journey into ERAS—so those who’ve been around can reminisce, and those newer to NMC can better understand who Rob is and what God has done through him.
In 2005, Rob came to NMC as our College Pastor, fresh off leading a ministry at the University of Kentucky. He arrived with a heart for the students at KSU and worked tirelessly to build relationships on campus. And honestly— what college student wouldn’t want to hang out with Rob?
But Rob didn’t just influence the campus. He created two ministries: Emulate (college) and The Spin (Young Professionals), and launched an event at NMC known as ECHO in the fall of 2006. By the time he was done, he and his team were seeing 800+ college students on our campus every Thursday night. (Maybe that was the early sign of how excited he would one day be about Thursday Night Church!)
In 2009, our former Lead Pastor, Mark Henry, stepped away.
NMC entered a Lead Pastor search, and this marked a difficult chapter in our church’s story. While we searched nationwide, we had this “young gun” leading an incredible college ministry right under our noses.
Rob stepped in to preach on Sunday mornings, and it didn’t take long for the Elders to recognize his leadership and gifting. Six months later the search was cancelled, and the elders called Rob to be our Lead Pastor.
It was a tough season—staff transitions, leadership disruption, and a challenging economy. Rob led with conviction and passion through some of the darkest days in NMC’s history. With a Godgiven conviction, he pursued not just paying down but paying off our mountain of debt. God showed up in a huge way, and under Rob’s leadership, NMC found stability, health, and complete freedom from debt.
With NMC growing rapidly, Rob led us through a major renovation—all while staying debt-free and without launching a capital campaign. Immediately after that came a little thing called a global pandemic.
Rob pivoted, adapted, and guided our church and staff through unprecedented challenges—not only a health crisis, but some of the most socially and politically tense times in recent history. He learned to preach on Zoom and to empty rooms, but he stayed faithful, steady, and consistent.
Coming out of the pandemic, Rob felt a deep conviction for stronger biblical literacy. He knew the best way to navigate our cultural
moment was to root ourselves more deeply in Scripture. That conviction birthed a new idea— North Metro Church University.
It has been an honor to serve alongside Rob through all these ERAs, but this current one may be my favorite. After 20 years at NMC, Rob has experienced more than many pastors experience in an entire lifetime—and he is wiser and better for it.
But in true Rob fashion, he doesn’t keep that wisdom to himself. Many people may not know this, but Rob is a trusted mentor and sage to countless church planters and pastors. He invests his time, experience, and encouragement into leaders across other churches. Rob has always been for the Kingdom, and while he is personally called to NMC, many churches and pastors have been strengthened because of Rob McDowell.
While he is nowhere near done, and there are hopefully many more ERAs ahead, I wanted to pause and reflect on the last 20 years.
I know I speak for all of us when I say thank you, Rob, for your faithful service, leadership, and obedience to your calling. It is truly an honor to serve alongside you and to sit under your leadership.
If you see him around, make sure to thank him for 20 years of incredible service. And here’s to many more.
John Maggard
Executive Pastor

Hello, my name is Joe, I have a new life in Christ, and I’m recovering from ego and an addiction to pornography.
I grew up in a culturally non-practicing Catholic household. My parents divorced when I was two, and I became the only child of a single working mom. Avoidance and grudges were family practices passed down generationally.
I had a lot of difficulty fitting in as a kid, and my primary way to get attention was to act out, be the weird kid, or mask my true self, based on the situation. I learned about pornography around age 8 from a high schooler, which began a curiosity, then addiction, that would follow me for the next 19 years. I resolved to die with this secret.
In school, I became a perfectionist, using my natural academic ability to define my self-worth, believing outward success would mask the inner turmoil I was coping with. This led to a new struggle with panic attacks. Eventually, this gave way to emptiness, resentment, being enslaved to my desires, and ultimately, fully exhausted.
When my wife & I got married, I believed that finding “my person” would finally silence my addiction, but instead it only worsened. We tried church a few times, but I loved my secret treasures too much to understand that God wanted to tear it all down, not to punish me, but to set me free.
In June 2024, I knew I had to stop lying and dump my relationship with pornography, or my marriage would crumble. That's when God spoke to me through my wife, who asked, "How do you know you’re saved?” I felt God’s hand heavy on me, and in that moment, I confessed Him as my Lord and Savior. I felt the lock on my heart open, and God got to work.
Over the next month, I leaned on my own understanding to reach Jesus, but battled constant guilt, shame, and intrusive thoughts. The Holy Spirit was simply incompatible with the diseased old spirit of my previous sin. I surrendered my life to Christ and begged Him to transform me.
It was then that we ended up at NMC, and I was eventually invited to Re:generation. I came alone my first night, nervous and skeptical. The Lord stirred in me that night to fully commit to a weekly, then daily walk that would transform how I see both Him and myself.
After years of walls, disappointment, and rejection in my early life, I was terrified of failure and desperate for control to make myself feel secure. I avoided trying because what I knew was what was comfortable. It had to be done my way because I felt no one else was looking out for me. But God was. He was simply waiting for me to feel secure in Him. I had to embrace the uncertainty of a true walk with God, the most uncomfortable steps being the 14 inches from my head to my heart.
With the help of my step group, I began to pursue a daily discipline of time with God, thanking Him for how far He’s brought me and exploring what His plans really were for me. Those plans required daily forgiveness, releasing to God the hurts I’ve suffered by others, daily amends, taking accountability for the resentment, pride, and lustful corruption that plagued my mind. For the first time in Re:gen, none of this was to gain favor for myself, but to glorify God through repentance.
Where I previously despaired in feeling lost, I’ve now found security in being found. Where I was anxious for what would come next, God continues to reveal Himself and remind me of His promise through His Word and His Church.
Where I cherished isolation, God has overwhelmed me with community. Wednesdays are my favorite day of the week. I get to close them with ten incredible brothers in recovery, and start them surrounded by a hundred more godly men to sharpen iron with and lift me up. Every day, I thank Him for a wife who is so much more than I deserve.
I once resolved to take my addiction to the grave. God agreed, but He made sure that addiction died with my life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” As of October 2024, I’ve been over 13 months sober from pornography.
Re:generation has shown me that my greatest reward is living to follow Christ and becoming more like Him. If you’re hiding from God, or you’re thinking, “Is this really God’s best for me?” “I can’t see a way out of this struggle,” or “I’m exhausted managing this on my own,” I encourage you to check out Re:generation. Every day, we see death turn into life and addiction give way to freedom through the power of the cross.

Last month, we celebrated over 30 people "commencing" from Re:generation! Our Commencement Celebration is a time when we gather to worship, celebrate all the hard work from participants, and ultimately, make much of the Lord. Below is a testimony from Joe Cantatore, a recent graduate, about how the Lord transformed his life through Re:gen.
Re:generation meets on Wednesdays at 7:00pm at the Barrett Campus. Join us on Wednesdays in the Theater. Visit northmetro.org/regeneration to learn more.

Welcome Home is designed to help you learn about everything that makes up North Metro Church and provide you with the next steps on how you can become part of our family. Visit northmetro.org/events to learn more and sign up.
At NMC, we genuinely believe we are better together. Therefore, we encourage everyone to circle up with others in a group. We have three different types of groups you can join. Connection Groups meet over shared interests such as hiking, board games,
or movies; Community Groups meet for fellowship, prayer, and study of the Bible; and Care Groups assist anyone walking through difficulty or a life transition. If you want to join a Connection Group, Community Group, or Care Group, or start your own group, check out northmetro.org/groups.
When we serve others, we set the table for them to experience God’s grace. That’s why, around here, we call our volunteers Tablesetters. Our goal is for everyone to experience the joy of serving others as a Tablesetter and serve somewhere within our church. Regardless of your schedule, experience, or gifting, there’s a fulfilling place for you to serve here.
Visit northmetro.org/serve to browse opportunities and take the next step to serve.
We offer classes for elementary-aged children, students, and adults once a quarter. After attending a class, one of our pastors will meet with you or your child to discuss the class content.
If you’re ready to take this step in your faith journey, we invite you to sign up for our next class on Sunday, January 11, or meet with a pastor at the Sewell Mill Campus. For more information about our beliefs on baptism and to sign up for a class, visit northmetro.org/baptism.

Invest in “I DO!” Take your marriage from good to great, bad to better, or best to bestest. Marriages matter, deeply!
Marriage is hard—even the strongest couples face seasons of disconnect, stress, or unresolved conflict. Over time, small cracks can grow into deep divides, leaving couples wondering, “Is this really what we hoped for when we said, ‘I do’?”
Re|engage is a safe place for couples to reconnect, reignite, or completely resurrect their marriage and remember why they said "I DO" in the first place. Whether you’re struggling deeply or simply longing for more closeness, Re|engage offers a clear path forward.
Re|engage is a marriage enrichment ministry designed for couples ready to invest time and energy into building a stronger marriage. Our goal is to help you grow in enriching & restoring your relationship with your spouse, other couples, and with God. It’s not just for couples in crisis—it’s for anyone who wants to move their marriage from good to great, or from hurting to healing.
Through a combination of large-group teaching and small-group discussions, you and your spouse are challenged and encouraged to use practical, biblical tools to strengthen your relationship. You’ll grow in your walk with Jesus and learn how to apply gospel-centered principles to your marriage—all within a supportive community of other couples walking a similar journey.
We offer Re|engage twice a year, in January and August, at both campuses. Registration for the January semester is now open. Don’t miss this opportunity to reinvest in your marriage and experience growing together, reconnect deeply, and rediscover the joy of saying “I DO.” Because your marriage matters—to each other, to your family, and to God. To learn more, visit our Marriage page at northmetro.org/marriage.
BARRETT CAMPUS | MONDAY, JANUARY 26
The early years of marriage are filled with excitement and a fair share of challenges. The Foundation classes are designed for couples who have been married for three years or less and offer a unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for a strong, Christ-centered relationship that lasts a lifetime.
This spring, we’ll be walking through the book Marriage: 6 Gospel Commitments Every Couple Needs to Make by Paul David Tripp. This is a powerful resource that brings gospel-centered truth to the realities of married life.
We offer Foundation at the Barrett campus. The semester-based class meets on Monday nights during the semester. Together we will gather for dinner, fellowship, and meaningful conversation.
Registration for the January semester is now open—we'll explore biblical principles and practical tools to help you grow in unity and deepen your connection as a couple. To learn more, visit our Marriage page at northmetro.org/marriage.

North Metro Church University (NMCU) is our primary vehicle for studying the Bible together to form a biblical worldview. In NMCU Core, you'll move through a set sequence of classes and learn about the big picture of Scripture and how everything in Scripture points to and is fulfilled in Jesus. In this learning process, NMCU will also help equip you to understand and communicate your faith to others, so that you can become a more faithful follower of Jesus—a disciple who makes disciples. Each semester offered is 10 weeks and goes in sequential order.
Our spring semester enrollment opens on Sunday, November 16, and closes on January 11, 2026. We offer in-person groups for Core, as well as on-demand options for every course. Learn more by visiting northmetro.org/nmcu.

NMC has a faithful group of men looking to assist widows, single moms, and other ladies in our church. SUPPORT GROUP BRUNCH
BARRETT CAMPUS | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1 | 11:00AM
Scripture urges believers to look after the orphans in our community. One way we do this at NMC is to come around families participating in foster care or adoption. Additionally, this group provides a place to find support and encouragement from others who understand these specific challenges. This group meets several times throughout the year to foster fellowship among these special families.
Whether you're currently fostering, in the midst of an adoption process, or have been part of this special community of parents for years, we'd love for you to join us for fellowship and a delicious brunch on Sunday, February 1. To register, please visit northmeto.org/events.

WOMEN’S CANCER SUPPORT LUNCHEON

We can have the honor of praying continually for you and your family. We can be that safe group of ladies who get it without explanation or apologies; we get it all.
If cancer has affected you in any way, we encourage you to reach out to NMC's Cancer Support Group leader, Diana Pethel, at 678.357.2933. This group will lead you to a faithful community of brave, strong women who have learned to trust God no matter what because He is trustworthy.

Pick up your Family Christmas Guide anytime on campus!
Christmas is quickly approaching along with all of our expectations and hopes for a perfect holiday season! What if this year was a little bit different? What if, this year, your family focused on the truth and heart of the season? What if everything we sing about and celebrate at Christmastime is true? Walk alongside NMC Kids with our 2025 Family Christmas Guide 2025, A Curious Christmas: What if it's true?!
Each week leading up to Christmas, you and your family will begin with a new question like, “What if it’s true that God keeps His promises?” Then, you'll take the time to read a few verses or passages and discuss the truth that answers each question. There are also activities to complete as a family each week. Our prayer is that as your family reads the Bible, completes activities, and make memories together, you also allow the truth of Christmas to change everything.
We never want to lose the shock, awe, and wonder that is the Christmas story because, if the Christmas story is true, it changes everything! This year, as kids and families are going through weekly "What if?" questions, the Christmas series in the auditorium will too! All family members of NMC will be exploring how the birth of Jesus changes everything—because if it’s true, it changes us.

MISSIONARY
Did you know that NMC supports missionaries all over the globe? Last month, one of our missionary couples visited and shared their story with our Student Ministry and College students. They are serving among people who have never heard the gospel, faithfully following God’s call to go to hard and unreached places. They spoke about how God stirred their hearts and compelled them to go overseas—simply by saying “yes” and being obedient. Remarkably, one of them grew up right here at NMC, once a student in our very own ministry. It’s a powerful reminder that God can raise up anyone from within our church to go and make His name known among the nations. If you’re interested in learning more about going overseas or supporting those who do, reach out to our Mobilization Director, Meagan Vinson, at mvinson@northmetro. org. Together, we want to be part of proclaiming God’s name to the nations.
North Metro Church has the opportunity to partner with many incredible organizations, one of which is Georgia Kids Belong. Georgia Kids Belong is a nonprofit that equips communities to improve the experiences and outcomes of kids in Georgia's foster care system. GKB works to find permanent, loving homes for children in care. They facilitate events where children are able to tell their story with a video and photo shoot while having a fun experience. One of the recent events was held at the Atlanta Falcons' Practice Facility. If you are interested in being involved or finding out more at americaskidsbelong.org/states/ga/
Also, if you’re a business owner and want to learn how your business can become Foster Friendly, visit americaskidsbelong. org/foster-friendly-business.
BARRETT CAMPUS | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7 | 12:15-1:15PM
Every child matters and deserves love, support, and a safe place to call home. Our church is partnering with WinShape Homes and hosting an informational meeting for families interested in learning more about foster care—what it entails, the current needs, and how they can get involved.
Whether you’re considering fostering, adopting, or simply want to support those who do, you’re invited to come learn how you can make a difference in the life of a child. Together, we can be part of God’s plan to care for every child. Register at northmetro.org/events.

Every student deserves a caring adult in their corner. MFL connects Marietta City Schools middle and high school students with mentors who meet regularly to listen, encourage, and help build confidence, character, and leadership. Mentoring works—MFL students have achieved a 100% graduation rate for the past five years, and mentors often say they grow just as much as the students they support.
We provide training, simple tools, and ongoing staff support so you can make a real difference in a student’s life.
Take the next step: Sign up to mentor at mentoringforleadership.org or email kthompson@mentoringforleadership.org to learn more.
You can invest in the next generation by becoming a mentor to encourage students once a month at Kennesaw Mountain High School during the 20252026 school year. As a mentor, you'll help facilitate the social-emotional curriculum, Habitudes by Dr. Tim Elmore. This is an opportunity to engage students in the public school environment where they spend so much time, all while equipping them with tools for healthy leadership in their world and the world around them. Take the next step by emailing Jill Stewart at jstewart@northmetro.org or check out the details at northmetro.org/serve.
Join us as we work with our international ministry, Casa de Redentor (Redeemer's House), in Panajachel, Guatemala. We have two exciting opportunities this spring for individuals and families to go and serve. Head to northmetro.org/events to find out more. The deadline to sign up for the April trip is Wednesday, January 14.
Ivan Mijango Casa del Redentor Director
An update from Ivan Mijango. Redeemer's House, or Casa del Redentor, is North Metro Church's international ministry in Panajachel, Guatemala.

For many of them, it was their very first time visiting the capital— and certainly their first time at a zoo—so it was a privilege to share in that excitement. Families in the villages tend to be quite protective of their children, so their willingness to let them travel with us meant a lot. We wished every child could have joined, but this time we took those between the ages of 8 and 13—25 children in total—along with a few volunteer moms who helped us care for them.
The day started early; we left at 5:30am in a traditional Guatemalan school bus, often called a “chicken bus.” We stopped halfway to enjoy breakfast together—each child had brought their own, so it turned into a fun little picnic.
When we arrived, the weather was perfect: sunny but not too hot. It took us about three and a half hours to explore the entire zoo, and it was wonderful to see the children’s faces light up as they saw their favorite animals up close. The capybara was the one they were most curious to meet, but the penguins and giraffes definitely caused the biggest excitement. Each child got to take an instant photo next to their favorite animal—a simple but treasured keepsake to bring home.

To end the day on a high note, we took everyone to McDonald’s— every Guatemalan child’s favorite restaurant—where they all enjoyed a Happy Meal (fun fact: it was actually invented in Guatemala!). After lunch, we headed back to the villages to drop the kids off with their families.
This trip was part of the Children’s Day celebration, which takes place every October 1st in Guatemala. It was also a wonderful way to encourage the children as they prepare for their final exams in November.
We know experiences like these will leave a lasting mark on their hearts, giving them the chance to witness firsthand God’s incredible creativity through some of the many animals He made—and inspiring awe and gratitude toward Him.
As I write this letter, we’re preparing for our next mission trip in December—“Hope for Christmas”—which we’ll celebrate in the communities we serve. I’d like to encourage you to take a look at next year’s mission trip calendar and consider joining one of the teams to meet these children and serve alongside us.

Since 2007, I have had the privilege of walking through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU). Over the years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible life change that can result from applying its principles. I’ve also had the pleasure of serving alongside other wonderful facilitators who share the same passion for helping others experience financial freedom. FPU isn’t just another budgeting course—it’s a mindset shift, a spiritual awakening in the area of money. Whether you’re someone who’s struggling to make ends meet or someone who feels confident in handling finances, this class is for you. It speaks to the heart of stewardship, teaching that everything we have ultimately belongs to God, and we are called to manage it with wisdom and integrity.
I share this not from a place of having it all figured out, but from a place of gratitude for what I’ve learned. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Investment Finance and have worked as a finance manager for many years. While those experiences gave me knowledge of financial systems and strategies, they didn’t teach me how to steward money in a way that truly honors God. It wasn’t until I went through FPU that I began to understand what it means to manage resources as a servant, not an owner. I thought I was doing well with money, but FPU challenged me to dig deeper—to align my heart, habits, and decisions with biblical truth. That shift has made all the difference.

The freedom that comes from living without debt, having a plan, and honoring God with your finances is life-changing. FPU equips you with the tools and biblical wisdom to make a lasting change. It’s not just about dollars and cents—it’s about peace, legacy, and obedience.
So, here’s the question: Are you trusting Him not just with your eternity, but with your bank account, your budget, your future? If not, maybe now is the time to take that step. Financial Peace University could be the beginning of the life change you've been praying for. So why not take this important step by registering for our next Financial Peace University class that begins on Thursday, January 29, 2026? As we near the end of 2025, we are praying our guts out and are entirely dependent on the Lord! He has entrusted us with our vision to “Be Missed” and our mission, “We Help People Find and Follow Jesus.” To live that out, we have set three God-sized goals to aim for as a church. PEOPLE ENROLLED IN NMCU
We’re telling our friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers about our great God, who loves us immeasurably more than we can imagine. We want to celebrate with you if you’ve played a part in helping someone move from death to life or if you came to faith in Christ! We invite you to share your story by visiting the Contact Us page at northmetro.org.
We currently support seven church plants, including Take Hold in Scotland, Grace Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, Creekside in Dallas, Georgia, Deeper Church in Dallas, Georgia, Heirloom Church in Kyle, Texas, Oaks Community Church in Naples, Florida, and Compassion International in Guatemala.
Before Jesus left the disciples, He said, “Go make disciples.” A tangible way to see that hope realized is through our discipleship program, NMCU. We’re looking to see 1,000 people faithfully following Jesus, equipped with knowledge of Scripture, to share their beliefs with others ultimately. NMCU creates disciples that make disciples.
Church plants are an expression of our multiplication strategy, multiplying the mission to help people find and follow Jesus.
Thursday Night Church kicks off our weekend services, including the same message and worship as Sunday. We hope you join us.
NMC Kids (Infants-5th grade) will not be available.
