TERMINAL D EXPANSION

JQ’s role as civil engineer included development of construction drawings, specifications and Basis of Design report for utilities, pavement markings, traffic flow and erosion control. The utility design included 1,200 LF of 12-inch water lines, 550 LF of eight-inch and four-inch sanitary sewer and 1,500 LF of storm drains connecting to proposed trench drain inlets around the newly expanded terminal and hardstand. JQ’s role as structural engineer included development of construction drawings, specifications and Basis of Design report for all structural systems and underground tunnels. The expansion included the design of three levels, 130,000 SF of new concourse space and accommodates four swing gates, both domestic and international flights with two wide body, four narrow body aircrafts. The physical connection to Terminal D involved partial demolition and tie-in to the existing building.

As part of the $1.9 Billion Terminal Renewal and Improvement Plan (TRIP) for DFW International Airport, JQ was hired to perform inspections and subsequent repair documents for the three garages at Terminal E. Working closely with the joint venture of AECOM/EJES, JQ completed inspections of the 1,500,000 SF of parking garages, documented all necessary repairs, created repair drawings, and performed cost estimating to verify potential costs. The completed repairs will extend the useful life of these garages for another 30 years.

GARAGE

The project consisted of planning, programming, and phasing of the overall expansion of Terminals A & C, inclusive of two additional double loaded piers, starting out with approximately 110,000 to 140,000 SF total floor area to accommodate nine new incremental gates. At the planning stage two options were considered. Bridging documents to a 10% level were created to allow the airport to solicit design build proposals from qualified teams. Once a design builder was selected our role is changed from planner to that of oversight on behalf of the airport.

The project consisted of planning, programming, and phasing for the abatement and demolition of the existing Terminal C - High C Gates to be replaced with a new two-level, 111,000 SF terminal building. Bridging documents to a 10% level were created to allow the Airport to solicit Design Build proposals from qualified teams. Our role changed from planner to that of oversight on behalf of the airport as the design builder started their efforts.

Assessment, Repairs Services: Civil Engineering

This project consisted of plan review, field investigations, dye testing, and mapping to verify the stormwater conveyance system and industrial drainage system on the air terminal side of Terminal D at DFW International Airport. The goal of the project was to confirm the routing of all drains and collector lines through separator units prior to discharge to the stormwater conveyance system. A summary memorandum of all findings was prepared that included drawings and descriptions of the system along with preliminary pipe sizing and routing for drain lines that were not currently connected to the separator system. The project also included preliminary construction cost estimating for proposed improvements.

GUIDEWAY ASSESSMENT

DFW International Airport | DFW Airport, Texas JQ provided assistance with the investigation and report on the causes and extent of spalled, cracked and deteriorated concrete at 12 guideway support structures. Inspection services were also provided for much of the guideway surfaces during nighttime shutdowns, examining and documenting conditions of the concrete guideway surfaces, side rails and expansion joint systems. Repair recommendations were provided for the noted deficiencies. Structural Engineering

SKYLINK

Following the unexpected failure of a high mast light pole along a service road at DFW International Airport, the Airport issued an emergency delivery order to inspect all of the high mast light poles on airport property. JQ mobilized quickly to assemble a team to assist with the on-site inspections of 131 of the over 350 light poles. All observable welds at the poleto-base connections were visually inspected, and metal thickness detectors were used to measure and document the thickness of the metal near the base of the poles. Upon notification that a few of the poles were found to be significantly corroded, the airport proactively removed the deteriorated light poles.

LOVE FIELD MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

Civil Engineering, Geospatial

Dallas Love Field | Dallas, Texas

The modernization of the passenger airport terminal replaced the existing 15-gate concourse with a modern 20-gate concourse. The project included 390,000 SF of new concourse space. The modernization made it easier for the facility to accommodate a greater influx of travelers. The project also brought significant upgrades to the terminal lobby, baggage claim hall and ticketing hall. JQ was involved in the design and coordination of the ticketing and baggage claim wings.

JQ provided structural engineering services on the 680,000 SF, 25-gate international airport terminal facility, which is roughly 1,720 feet long and five levels high. The basement level houses baggage claim; the Apron level contains operations areas for airlines; Concourse level houses ticketing, check-in, and gate hold rooms; the Mezzanine level houses airport management; and the Roof level incorporates exposed structural trusses spanning 120 feet. The facility was designed to provide for future expansion of up to 20 additional gates, and provides an elevated/lowered roadway system for arrival and departure vehicle traffic.

JQ provided structural engineering design and construction administration services for the the five-level Ready/Return/ Storage parking facility that consolidated all rental car operations including all support areas for upkeep maintenance, preparation and fueling for approximately 1,900 vehicles. The project is made up of many different structural systems, from the post-tensioned concrete slab and beams for the main structure, to large, exposed steel wide flange beams and tubes for the customer service area. There is also a large amount of precast concrete elements incorporated into the structure, both from a cost and ease of construction purpose to a necessity, in order to keep existing roadways that serve ongoing airport functions open during construction. The design of the elevated floor in the Ready Return area included additional loading scenarios to account for future flexibility in the various rental agency layouts and space allocations. Structural scope also included the design of an elevated roadway of almost one quarter mile for easy departure.
