E.H. HEREFORD UNIVERSITY CENTER ENTRY

Student Life

After several additions to the building throughout the years, the University of Texas at Arlington’s Hereford University Center was unsightly and lacked identity. The goal with this project was to improve the visitor experience by creating a front door to campus that could also house large events for students, faculty, and the surrounding community. The project scope included refacing the entry, designing a new two-story glass façade vestibule, pedestrian walkway, formal promenade, and expanding the parking lot for better vehicular circulation. While it once was nondescript, Hereford University Center now the heart of UTA and prominently welcomes students and visitors to campus.

The 34,556 SF facility is in the southern quadrant of the 40-acre development designed to serve 2,400 students initially, but is planned for expansion to serve a future residential population of 4,000. Civil engineering services included the design of water, sanitary sewer and storm drain services for the proposed building, as well as the site grading and new loading dock for food deliveries.

Student Life NEW STUDENT UNION AT HUBBARD HALL Texas Woman’s University | Denton, Texas The New Student Union at Hubbard Hall houses food services, meeting rooms, retail, an auditorium, recreation space, academic, student organizations, and administrative support services. JQ’s scope included replacement of utility systems, realigning driveways and access points along Oakland Street and replacing the exterior drainage system. New Cost:Size:Services:ConstructionCivilEngineering125,000SF$54M

Renovation of the existing Union consisted of a partial demolition of the structure and full abatement of approximately 180,000 SF. The expansion included new dining and retail spaces, a new theater/academic space, an accessible rooftop green space and a new ballroom. A key architectural goal was to bring large amounts of natural light into the building, which was achieved by demolishing a large section of the existing building to create a multi-story solarium space that serves as the building’s main circulation area. The clerestory at the top of the solarium filters natural light from the roof level down to all other levels. The existing structure presented many structural challenges — from the incorporation of a new building skin to incorporating new loads associated with dining food preparation and vertical expansion. Site improvements included rerouting utilities servicing the adjacent Eagle Student Service Center, modification of Union Circle and modifications to a parking area.
