The transformation of the Zachry Engineering Center into a new, state-of-the-art Engineering Education Complex included the demolition, renovation and reconstruction of the 1972 five-story, 300,000 SF building and the addition of 225,000 SF of new space. The complex includes new classrooms, laboratories for fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, materials, controls, cyber/physical, electrical sciences, measurements, and instrumentation, as well as a unit operations high bay laboratory. The structural scope included major structural demolition, extensive permanent shoring, design of an atrium infill with new learning stairs, a 3,500 SF skylight over the central atrium, a partial two-level vertical expansion, multi-level additions on the north and south ends and a 30,000 SF green roof. The civil scope included the engineering quad oval project and engineer’s walk pedestrian pathways. Multiple buildings and points of access resulted in significant challenges for pedestrian access and stormwater runoff.

Additionally, the east end of the building has two distinct protruding architecturally exposed structural steel features, as does the interior courtyard. The Architecurally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) trusses support an infill structural steel louver system.

This four-story, 200,000 SF mechanical engineering building is primarily a reinforced concrete building segmented into four main wings. The laboratory research wing was designed with post-tensioned concrete pan joists and post-tensioned concrete girders configured to support highly sensitive imaging equipment while still providing future flexibility. The two classroom wings were designed with conventional concrete pan joists and post-tensioned girders, and they contain three longspan, post-tensioned concrete transfer girders. The “connector” wing was designed with an open first-story that provides access to the interior courtyard, and it is supported by two three-story-deep, 110-foot-long structural steel trusses.

The facility is designed to be a signature building on campus. New Services:ConstructionStructural Engineering Size: 104,690 SF Cost: $40.5M

Science & Technology AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES COMPLEX West Texas A&M University | Canyon, Texas Going beyond the typical academic classroom and faculty environment, this building includes a full meat science laboratory. Faculty offices, classrooms and research labs are located on the upper floors, and the meat science lab includes a harvest floor, a hot carcass cooler, an aging cooler, meat production and fabrication facilities, a kitchen, a smoker, a sensory lab and retail sales space. Adjacent to the academic building is an 18,000 SF multipurpose pavilion for students and the community. Additionally, a 60,000 SF covered arena seats approximately 300. All three buildings are connected via a central courtyard used for large events or a classroom. New Services:ConstructionStructural Engineering, Civil Engineering Size: 82,000 SF Cost: $38.6M

Designed to utilize the coastal environment it is set in, the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Tidal Hall Life Science Research Building houses laboratory spaces for graduate and doctoral-level programs. Tidal Hall consists of teaching labs, aquariums, marine-life observation rooms and zones that are designated for specific shared research functions like tissue culture and microscopy. Because the facility faces the bay, the overall design accommodates for the risk of hurricanes by placing the lab spaces in the center of the building. The perimeter acts as a protective shield that is primarily utilized for circulation. The new and innovative Tidal Hall aides in TAMU-CC’s pursuit of becoming of becoming a premiere research institution.

Tarrant County College District | Fort Worth, Texas

Science & Technology

The two-story facility was designed to house the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration program for the Tarrant County College District, as well as training programs for oil, gas and renewable energy technologies. With goals of LEED Platinum status and net zero energy, the Energy Technology Center will operate as a high-performance building and be a living, teaching and learning laboratory. The building’s structure and HVAC systems were largely left exposed to allow students to observe the systems, thus doubling as a teaching tool. Digital displays are provided around the building to provide real-time information about the building’s performance. The building also contains public gathering spaces, lecture halls, administrative offices, collaborative learning environments and exterior photovoltaic canopies for on-site power generation.

The new 140,000 SF, $100M Instructional Laboratory & Innovative Learning Building (ILSQ) Building will provide much needed instructional laboratory capacity for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and interdisciplinary learning for undergraduate core curriculum and will prepare students for advanced learning as they continue their academic careers. Allotting over three-fourths to direct instructional spaces, the new facility is programmed to provide the University with 28 science lab spaces for chemistry instruction and 8 interdisciplinary studios for art instruction. In addition to lab space, the facility will contain an interdisciplinary maker space and small and large study spaces for students to gather, study and collaborate.
