In humid conditions, Phytophthora infestans produces sporangia and sporangiophores on the surface of infected tissue.

This sporulation results in a visible white growth at the leading edge of lesions on abaxial surfaces of leaves.

Some spots turn grayish brown, but most lesions may coalesce or undergo secondary enlargement and become irregular and much darker, acquiring a "frog-eye" appearance.
