Welcome to Spring 2017. This season looks to the future of choreography in the UK, no more so than in Nottdance 2017 when Dance4 continues to open new possibilities for future artists, dance performance and knowledge.

Our new international Centre for Choreography (iC4C) will continue to offer time and space to artists in order to research and explore new choreographic works. Our residency programme supports artists exploring new territories in choreography and during the residencies there will be opportunities to meet, talk and experience artists’ work. We showcase iC4C as our Nottdance festival hub and we are excited about being able to welcome you.

This spring we’re also showcasing the depth of dance performance in Nottingham. Our partnership with Nottingham Lakeside Arts continues to offer a rich diversity of work from both young and established artists. Our collaboration with Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall as well as Nottingham Playhouse enable the city to host the world’s leading dance companies, ensuring Nottingham continues to offer a dance season that is arguably unrivalled outside of London.

Spring is that time of year where we celebrate the brilliance of our dance talent in the region, with celebrations of youth dance from across the East Midlands. If you need a pick-me-up from the dark winter months, then these are the events to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step (see pages 18–21).

We have some extraordinary participatory opportunities (see pages 10–11). And why not join us for Sunday Supplement – an informal sharing of work where you can meet new friends and have breakfast, all while engaging in creative conversation.

SALLY DOUGHTY, RACHEL KRISCHE AND LISA KENDALL (UK) Body of Knowledge Undertaken by dance artists Sally Doughty, Rachel Krische and Lisa Kendall, Body of Knowledge is a research project that explores the body as a living archive and how it might be treated as such through collection, articulation and dissemination, so challenging traditional archival methods reliant upon artefacts and documents.

In partnership with Derby Museums, the first research phase has included residency time at Dance4’s international Centre for Choreography, discussions with the Silk Mill curators and archivists and presenting initial research as part of the international symposium InDialogue, Nottingham. The artists explore the body as a means of making: past, present and future, drawing from the Silk Mill and its collections of Making and Social History.

Phase two provides an opportunity to expand the research further through open dialogues and residencies, and will include some opportunities to meet the artists including a Sunday Supplement (see page 7).

WHAT’S IN YOUR ARCHIVE?

Q&A VIDEO SERIES

Working with themes from the Body of Knowledge research, join Sally to practically explore the potential for using movements and memories from your personal archive to generate new ideas and materials. You will write and move but you do not need any dance experience to take part.

MATT SHILCOCK (AUS) As part of Dance4’s ongoing exchange programme with Critical Path, Australia, South Australian based contemporary dance-theatre artist Matt Shilcock will be in residency at iC4C throughout January and February.

Matt’s movement style, osteogenuine, comes from finding ways to move and function, minimising pain and risk of injury as much as possible. It is a practice of adaptation and discovering strengths in diverse abilities, drawing on structured improvisation to navigate the challenges of frequent injury, a constantly changing human landscape.

Matt has a keen interest in alchemy and holistic Eastern medicinal practices and philosophies, which he incorporates into his practice to create a dance form that is nurturing, regenerative and accessible.

LUCY SUGGATE (UK) Future Dancer Future Dancer is part of a research project inspired by Isadora Duncan’s 1903 manifesto, The Dance of the Future.

Come and join in this conversation and sharing with dance artist and choreographer Lucy Suggate. It is an opportunity to reflect upon the state of our dancing nation and re-vision the future of dance. Through questioning and collaboration, the project will tap into the dimensions, perspectives and research around the notion of a future dance and future body, forming an intricate web that will be part performance, protest, movement research, guidebook, series of propositions and advice columns.

ROSANNA IRVINE (UK) Ah kissing Ah kissing is a new public art piece that works with slowness, augmenting awareness within the environment, seeping into public spaces, with multiple acts of kissing silently emerging… and slowly melting away…

Rosanna’s work is often based on simple instructions around how we focus our attention in action.

Ah kissing is part of the larger choreographic project Figures Series, which addresses choreographic works that quietly invite experiences or imaginary possibilities of more radical and political ways of being together. www.figuresseries.com

SIONED HUWS (UK) Odori-Dawns-Dance: Forest and Clearing

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Odori-Dawns-Dance: Forest and Clearing is a new project by choreographer Sioned Huws. It will be performed alongside Japanese artists Reina Kimura and Honami Shimizu.

KEY DATES To participate in the project, we need you to be able to attend all of the dates below. All rehearsals will take place in Nottingham:

Odori-Dawns-Dance: Forest and Clearing will explore a sense of place to reveal the poetry of dance and community as a large family, the situations and the friendships. Individuals will be asked to share photographs and physical memories of people and place, and from this collaboratively form rituals alongside traditional, modern and post modern Japanese movement.

Dance4 is seeking up to 10 participants aged 18+ to be part of the work. You do not need any experience of performance.

LOST DOG (UK) Paradise Lost

When do we stop being children or feeling young?

There is a possibility that God made everything because he was terrified of doing nothing.

Here is a re-telling of the story of the beginning of everything inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost told through words, music and dance.

H2DANCE’s latest work is created in collaboration with a cast of five dancers aged 9 to 65. The work explores the meetings between generations and how we feel about our public and private selves at different stages.

Mixing movement and text, Staging Ages covers themes of generational dignity and pride, expectations, prejudices, norms and taboos.

XZIBIT YOUNG CREATIVES 2017 An exciting, fast paced evening of unique dance pieces created by young choreographers, drawing from different genres of urban, street, classical and contemporary dance styles.

FREE CENTRE FOR ADVANCED TRAINING SCHOOL WORKSHOPS Dance4 Centre for Advance Training is offering FREE dance workshops to secondary schools across the East Midlands.

Workshops are two hours in length and can take place during term time between January and 28 April 2017. A professional dance artist would come to your school to deliver a contemporary dance workshop aimed at year groups 7,8,9,10 and 11.

The workshops are ideal for students who show potential in dance and who may have the desire to become professional dance artists. We are encouraging schools to invite additional students from surrounding schools in your area.

The workshops are FREE but booking is essential.

JÜRG KOCH (SUI) Professional Development for Dance Artists and Teachers

‘It is in this way that disability and disabled students become a part of the full spectrum of diversity in our dance studios, our universities and our societies, rather than being isolated as an issue or group to be taught outside the regular curriculum.’

Professional dance artists and teachers are invited to explore Jürg’s approach to dance training in this workshop informed by Universal Design of Instruction. Jürg will unpack key aspects of Universal Design and its application in dance to allow a deeper understanding of his inclusive approach.

Jürg’s approach in dance is a result of his experience with Candoco Dance Company and his vast experience in higher education in the U.S. Instead of a disability specific approach or working with adapting movements for or by disabled dancers, this approach allows everyone in the class to work with shared principles and processes, allowing them to recognise and push their individual movement ranges and possibilities.

LUCY SUGGATE (UK) Pilgrim Pilgrim is a physical journey through the mystical sound scores created by electronic musician James Holden, and a reminder of the ancient and enduring kinship between dance and music and the deeply transformative qualities of both.

The work is haunted by remnants of English folk heritage and pagan sensibilities shifting between hypnotic and euphoric states.

Lucy’s physical vocabulary is irreverent and eclectic; she guides us through minimal sophistication towards acid house and arduous repetition, resulting in a variety of perceptual and physical shifts. Coaxed along
