Dance4 is an international centre for the development of 21st century dance. As well as this season’s events, Dance4 provides an ongoing dance development offer across the East Midlands. We work with a range of cultural partners to create exciting opportunities for people from all walks of life to experience and engage in the richness of dance.

WELCOME For over 20 years Dance4 has supported dance artists and performance makers working with choreography through a programme of residencies and this season focuses on how we support the creative process of artists when making new works.

These residencies offer artists the space, creative input, funds and time to create new work, investigate ideas and take risks in a safe and supportive environment.

We will further develop this work in our new International Centre for Dance and Choreography. You can read more about our new home on pages 4 and 5.

This spring we are continuing to ease you into your Sunday mornings with our relaxed and informal Sunday Supplements. These sharings are your chance to be a part of artists’ and performance makers’ creative process, share your ideas and have a cuppa and a croissant.

We also support artists by producing, commissioning and presenting their works both nationally and internationally. This season look out for an exciting European preview from dance artist Lucy Suggate of her work Swarm Scultures, taking place in Germany. There are also lots of opportunities to see innovative and new works taking place around the region.

We are once again thrilled to be supporting U.Dance in 2016. Dance4 is looking forward to working with regional partners to present five county youth dance platforms across the region. These fantastic events showcase the wealth of young people’s dance performance work and lead to the crossregional MY Dance festival, co-produced with DanceXchange, this year held in Birmingham.

A Conversation Place (ACP) is a series of digital conversations where experts in their field come together in a virtual meeting space to talk about an idea or theme and its relationship to choreography.

Past themes have included architecture, migration, the urban landscape and more.

Conversations are recorded through a computer, last 15 minutes and are then shared to the wider community.

Following Roberta Jean’s residency with Critical Path, Australia, Dance4 in partnership with InDialogue have invited Roberta to be in conversation to explore her recent time spent in Australia. Roberta and InDialogue will also discuss the themes and documentation from her current work Brocade.

A darkened room. A velvet curtain. An uncanny sense of familiarity. Awakenings invites the audience to experience the reimagining of filmic narratives by exploring the mise en scène of cinema and memory through an intimately choreographed performance for two guests.

Sally Doughty is nearing the end of rehearsals for her new show Renaissance. There’s one week left in the studio before the work is previewed at Curve Theatre, Leicester. Sally and collaborators, including dance artist Pete Shenton, have been grappling with making full-length improvised performance for larger-scale venues rather than for smaller intimate spaces in which improvised performances are more commonly presented.

In Tracing Gestures three performers use a range of visual media to trace each other’s movements. The intention is to bring the audience closer to the intimate negotiations that take place between them, and to the images that are being created alongside.

This new work is choreographed by Stephanie Schober in collaboration with performers Richard Court, Stephen Moynihan and Aaron Markwell and multimedia artists Mamoru Iriguchi and Sophia Clist. Tracing Gestures will premier in summer 2016 and tour to theatre and gallery spaces.

A collective of people including food and farming industry experts, general public, academics, artists and researchers are becoming active stakeholders in A Field of Wheat in Branston Booths Farm, Lincolnshire.

Artists Anne-Marie Culhane and Ruth Levene, and the farmer, will journey with participants through the cycle of winter wheat from drilling the seed to harvest in autumn 2016.

A Field of Wheat aims to provide a lively, creative platform to explore the complexities of contemporary arable farming first hand, bringing together elements of performance, walking, culture and ritual with global markets, ecology, local history and the future of farming.

GABRIELE REUTER (UK / GERMANY) Teachers’ Twilight Session Teachers’ Twilight Session, with Learning Officer (Drama) at Nottingham Lakeside Arts Rachel Feneley and choreographer Gabriele Reuter, looks at how teachers can integrate dance into science and music classes at key stage 3.

Teachers’ Twilight Session is based on the performance The Amplitude, a collaboration between sound artist Mattef Kuhlmey and Gabriele Reuter, which was previewed at Nottdance Festival 2015.

This session is the starting point for a larger educational project for secondary schools, which aims to integrate dance performance into science and music curricula of years 7–9.

Building on the feedback gathered, this educational project will offer unconventional and creative ways for students to engage with the topic of acoustic waves and practical experiments into the production and electronic amplification of sound for the classroom. A pilot phase for this educational project is planned for autumn 2016.

Inviting teachers to collaborate at an early stage, it will present ideas and gather feedback on the development of a lecture performance; workshop and resource pack tailored specifically to physics and music students of key stage 3.

SALLY DOUGHTY (UK) Dance Improvisation: the estranged cousin

This one-day symposium of provocations and performances is aimed at artists, academics and producers. It will address a range of issues concerning the status and perception of contemporary dance improvisation including the reluctance to programme within mid-scale venues and risky aspects of improvised work, from the perspectives of artist and producer.

The day includes a keynote presentation from American scholar and dance artist Kent De Spain, contributions by Sally Doughty and Vida Midgelow, and offers an open space for dialogue and sharing.

DANCE4’S CENTRE FOR ADVANCED TRAINING IN DANCE FREE School Workshops Dance4’s Centre for Advanced Training in Dance is offering FREE school workshops to secondary schools across the East Midlands. Workshops can take place during term time until Thursday 21 April 2016.

Dance4 is offering schools the opportunity to host a workshop for students that show potential in dance and who may have the desire to become professional dance artists. We are also encouraging schools to invite additional students from surrounding schools in their area who might also benefit from this opportunity.

Workshops are aimed at years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 and specific boys only workshops can also be arranged on request.

Notts Young Peoples Dance (NYPD) Weekender is an exciting new showcase of Nottinghamshire’s most talented young dancers and choreographers. Each evening performance will celebrate the best in Youth Dance talent from across Nottinghamshire.

Young people performing during this weekend will be given the opportunity to get involved in a range of workshops in the day and perform their own choreography during the evenings’ events to paying audiences as a celebration of their achievements. A panel of dance industry experts will be selecting groups from these events to perform at the cross-regional MY (Midlands Youth) Dance Festival and U.Dance 2016 national event.

Xzibit Young Creatives, curated by Gareth Woodward and supported by County Youth Arts is a choreographic programme that aims to enhance young people’s skills and knowledge of choreography and gives them the opportunity to present their own work in a professional environment. Xzibit is also supported by One Nottingham, Dance4 and Nottingham Lakeside Arts.

Open Taster Session Dance4’s Centre for Advanced Training in Dance is offering a FREE Open Taster Session for young people aged 11-17 to take part and experience a CAT workshop before auditioning for the programme. The workshop includes contemporary technique and creative as well as an opportunity to watch current students take class.

She is a dancer, choreographer and teacher from India who has firmly established a professional reputation in the West.
