Random Thoughts The staff of The Mountain Spirit, along with all CAP employees and volunteers would like to thank you for your continued prayers and support over this past year and ask for you to continue to pray for CAP and those we serve in the year ahead.

It has been a blessing to share with you stories about those we serve and the volunteers who come from across the country to give of their time to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

This past year we have received many beautiful Appalachian photos, poems and letters to the Editor, which are wonderful to share with the readers of The Mountain Spirit.

by Magaret Gabriel The importance of family as the building block of society is as present in the Appalachian region of Kentucky as it is anywhere in the world. Indeed, the strength of family is the backbone of much of the literature of such Appalachian writers as Jessie Stuart, Silas House and Garry Barker.

In areas served by the Christian Appalachian Project, areas with high rates of poverty, CAP programs strive to make families that are living in poverty stronger and more stable by providing education for children, youth and adults; advocating access to safe and affordable housing; and by reaching out with crisis intervention. Programs that address housing, family advocacy and education are among the core programs that CAP believes will help participating families to become strong and self-sufficient.

border is one of 37 described as “distressed” by the Appalachian Regional Commission, a designation based on per capita income and poverty rates.

In 1999, Tonya moved to Kentucky with her daughter, Jennifer, and son, Cody, from Orlando, FL, with her sister. “She was following a man,” Tonya said, with a note of regret in her voice.

For a while, Tonya’s family and her sister’s lived together in a cramped mobile home in McCreary County, but after receiving a settlement following a job-related injury she suffered in Florida, Tonya was able to purchase a small

trailer on several acres of land for her family. Her love of cooking prompted her to open a restaurant, “Tonya’s Home Cooking,” a business that also provided catering. The high cost of food and small profit margin forced the restaurant to go out of business. With pride, though, Tonya says that her last effort in the food service business was cooking and serving food for Christmas and Thanksgiving in 2001 and giving it all away.

“I just love to feed people,” she said. “I’ll feed anybody— even dogs and cats! I just ran out of money.”

Tonya heard about the assistance available through CAP from the Family Resource Center.

Today, Tonya provides for her family with a disability check. Jennifer no longer lives with her mother, but in addition to 15-year-old Cody, Tonya has custody of Jennifer’s five-yearold son, Nathan.

The mobile home where the family moved in 2001 sits somewhat askew on a flat bit of land a few miles from

the Kentucky state line. The porch on the front of the home was added only months ago and appears sturdier than the structure to which it is attached.

The metal facing on the trailer is rusting; the interior is dark, with ceilings a little over six feet high over the uneven flooring. Even when the sun shines brightly, the interior traps the damp cold

from the night before. A single stove is the heat source for the home which is usually freezing in the winter months.

Tonya heard about the assistance available through CAP from the Family Resource Center at Cody’s school several years ago. The family has received Christmas baskets and Tonya contacted Debra Jasper for assistance with home repair. “We helped with some emergency home repair, but couldn’t do much because of the shape of [it],” Debra said.

Although CAP’s housing program provides mostly rehabilitation of Appalachian homes, occasionally, if a family is able to provide most of the money needed, CAP will make a loan of the balance. Such was the service that CAP was able to provide to Tonya.

In order to pay the initial portion of the cost of the double­ wide mobile home she found on the internet, Tonya realized several thousand dollars from the sale of some land; CAP loaned her the balance, which she will repay in monthly installments over two years.

“She couldn’t afford a commercial loan,” said family advocacy and housing manager Robyn Renner. “But we made a small loan, that she’ll be able to repay with small monthly payments.”

suzette After taking on the responsibility of serving as foster parents, Suzette and Jimmy learned about ways that CAP can help them with the new members of their family.

Suzette, a stay-athome mom, and Jimmy, a quality control technician at a manufacturing plant, are parents of 16 and 12 year-old daughters, and foster parents of Country, 4, and Billie Jo, six months. Country has been a member of their family for two years and had been enrolled in Parents Are Teachers by her biological mother, who has given her up for adoption to Jimmy and Suzette. Suzette is an outgoing mom who loves to talk about her family and the help they’ve received from Parents Are Teachers, a home-based early intervention program for infants and children with disabilities or delays.

Suzette and Jimmy attended classes for potential foster parents for a year before receiving the call about Country. The decision was also discussed with Megan and Ashley, their older daughters.

“They were nervous, as we were, but we’ve had our adjustment time and now we all have a strong bond,” Suzette said.

Jimmy Because Country was a “CAP kid” before her placement, she also introduced Suzette and Jimmy to CAP programs. “I had heard people talk about CAP, but didn’t know that much about it,” Suzette said. She is happy to report, though, that Billie Jo is also being helped by Parents Are Teachers. “She was small and when we had her evaluated, we found out that she needed some help, too.” Billie Jo now weighs 15 pounds and is catching up with her developmental level.

When they became involved as foster parents, Suzette and Jimmy didn’t picture being asked to take an infant, but with the help of CAP, as well as their extended family and the members of their church in Mount Vernon, they have all the support they need. “We hope and pray to make a difference in the lives of these children.”

That difference comes with the assistance of Parents Are Teachers. “I can’t say enough good things about CAP,” Suzette said. “I’m a stay-athome mom, but I don’t have the knowledge and years of experience that Country needs.

But she’s very smart and she’s learning constantly!”

Only three days earlier, Tonya and her family had moved in and over the last several days, Tonya has carried armloads of clothing and household goods to the new space. She entered the front door by climbing forklift battens and

Tonya hopes to have the porch from the old home (which will become a storage shed) moved to the new one and raised to the height of the new front door.

applied paint appliqués of sunflowers that match the tablecloth and the curtains. The room looks sunny and inviting.

With the help of CAP volunteer Kelly Reis, Debra and Tonya hoist the large chair to the top of the wooden slatted battens and maneuver the chair into the new living room. Tonya is thrilled to have a place to sit in her new living room.

The living room also features a computer that Tonya uses for the on-line computer classes that she is taking through a local community college. She has not yet decided on a major, but for now is taking beginning classes. While she’s enjoying the class work, Tonya says she has also returned to college to set a good example for Cody and Nathan. The five-year-old is Jennifer’s son, but Tonya was

A CAP program in Floyd County, about 125 miles east, is helping two girls, ages 13 and 15, who were abused by their mother and her boyfriend. Their father had received custody of the girls.

Laura and Beth were first involved with CAP when they were enrolled in Magoffin County Child and Family Development Center several years ago, then became reintroduced to CAP through Trish Joseph, a community educator who teaches character, conflict resolution and drug education classes in public school classrooms. “I told them about Camp Shawnee and invited them to come.”

After becoming reacquainted with Laura and Beth, Trish learned that their father had recently passed away. They had lived with their grandmother before being moved to residential programs where they could receive monitoring, counseling, and appropriate behavioral medication.

“We worked with them and gave them the access to the resources we had. They’ve really come a long way,” Trish said.

“They’re good little girls that have had a rough life.”

Heather In Clay County, CAP has helped to make life a bit easier for another family that struggles with the effects of drug abuse.

Heather and her husband returned to Manchester after moving to Toledo in order to find work when they were younger.

While her husband worked in a factory, Heather held a variety of jobs, working as a nurses’ aide, a cashier and in a sewing fac­ tory. “I’ve worked most of my life, but after we retired, we wanted to come home to Manchester,” said Heather. “We were tired of living in the city. We have family in Ohio and in Kentucky. When we were there, we came home to Kentucky anytime we could.”

Heather’s daughters, Amy and Teresa, now ages 32 and 30, were also anxious to return to Clay County in order to escape the gangs that were prevalent in Toledo. “My girls like it better here.”

Heather has custody of her two granddaughters, Destiny, 9, and an 11-year-old, also named Heather. “Their mother was on drugs and couldn’t care of them, but now she’s straightened up and been off drugs for two or three years.” The girls are enrolled in elementary school and from their teachers Heather hears that they are progressing well.

CAP assisted the family by building a ramp for Heather, who uses a wheelchair. “And they fixed our roof, windows, doors and siding. And they built me a little back porch, too. I’m really proud of it. Now we don’t have cold cornin’ in the house no more. They’re just good people,” Heather says of CAP. 8

Tonya believes that the warmer, brighter, safer and more comfortable home is well worth the payments she will make to CAP because of the improved standard of living that she will be able to provide for Cody and Nathan.

Cody, a freshman in high school, is enrolled in the school’s gifted and talented pro­ gram. “His teacher told me that he’s a pleasure to have in class, that he’s a nice, respectful kid,” Tonya said with pride. “I like to be able to show people that a single woman can raise a kid right!”

The good-natured teasing and laughter between Tonya and Debra is evidence of the easy camaraderie that has developed between the two, demonstrating that CAP has not only assisted Tonya and her family with the safe, warm home she dreamed of, but gives her the support of friendship, as well.

Families are Building Blocks As families are the building blocks of society, programs that help those families to grow and remain strong are the building blocks of the Christian Appalachian Project.

Education programs like the Child and Family Development Centers and Parents Are Teachers successfully support families along with public schools, where children can gain the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty Families like Tonya’s and Heather’s can access the housing programs they need to provide warm and safe shelter for their children.

CAP helps hundreds of families in dozens of programs through education and housing. Or, like Laura and Beth, they stand quietly with a family that has many needs but more than anything else, needs a friend.

Your magazine has blessed me. I love the stories and recipes. The stories bring back childhood memories when I was a poor child of a family of seven. We also had an outhouse to go to. I remember the cold times we had to use it and sometimes food was scarce. But God seen us through them. I am a Grandma of three.

Back in the early 1990s, I spent a week with CAP and stayed at a former motel with a mixed group of volunteers. I worked in the store, with the day care for mentally and physically challenged children, and spent one day with a social worker.

I have never forgotten the people I met, and have tried, and in some small ways, succeeded in using my facilitation of outreach in various churches to inspire others to support CAP. More than that, now I am retired and have a tiny outreach ministry to homeless, abused seamen at port of Wilmington, prison ministries, senior services, premature infants in area hospitals, and more.

I first became aware of the possibilities through CAP and I continue to bless CAP for your work in your area, but also for the inspiration you instill in so many others!

My memories of CAP will never fade!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month o < D

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Family Life Abuse Center’s Family and Community Advocates conducted a wide variety of activities throughout the Cumberland Valley Area Development District. All eight counties (Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Rockcastle and Whitley) participated in the Purple Ribbon Campaign, with ribbons and domestic violence statistics being distributed at local football games and events. Approximately 5,600 ribbons were distributed at Harlan County football games following the theme of “Real Men Wear Purple” to emphasize male awareness of domestic violence. Approximately 10,200 fact sheets were distributed through coordination with local grocery stores. All eight counties hosted a variety of awareness displays in local libraries, community colleges, courthouses and high schools.

To increase awareness, Public Service Announcements regarding domestic violence ran continuously on local radio stations in all eight counties and weekly domestic violence articles ran in local papers. In addition, October 19 was designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Sunday in Harlan County, with 21 churches participating by speaking with their congregations about

domestic violence and listing the crisis line number on their church bulletins.

Advocates engaged local elementary and middle schools in awareness events, by conducting essay contests on the subject of domestic violence, with the winning essay being published in local newspapers.

Brown-Bag Workshops on the Dynamics of Domestic Violence were held at Community Colleges in Bell and Harlan Counties to educate college students and community members about domestic violence.

Candlelight vigils were also held in Middlesboro, Pineville, Harlan, Mt. Vernon, McKee and Manchester with over 200 people in attendance.

First Lady Jane Beshear coordinated a state-wide program to promote domestic violence awareness month while helping those who are victims. The Kentucky Domestic Violence Association (KDVA), the Department of Corrections, the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Commission on Women all participated in collecting donations through the Shop and Share Initiative. All monies and supplies donated were divided between Kentucky’s 15 Domestic Violence Shelters. Peggy Hancock, Program Manager, stated that the generosity of Kentucky people was amazing.

In the past, elderly participants have been provided a Thanksgiving dinner for the Holiday. Although CAP was unable to provide one big dinner this year, we have been able to give individuals a meal. Monetary donations have allowed CAP caseworkers to have the means to cook and provide meals this year.

Two days before Thanksgiving, caseworkers spent the day cooking and delivering Thanksgiving dinner while also visiting Appalachian homes in need.

At the Rainbow Respite Care Center in Mt. Vernon, the Thanksgiving Holiday was celebrated by a week of company and food for those participants who do not have family to spend the holiday with. Thanksgiving dinner was also provided to these participants through CAP.

Every year, CAP provides Christmas Baskets to needy families who do not have the luxury of buying gifts or food for the holidays. Sponsors throughout the United States are matched up with families in Appalachia. A sponsor is given information about a family, including names, ages, and gift requests. These sponsors buy, wrap, and mail the gifts to the Family Advocacy Program for distribution to their respective families. Food vouchers are also given to families. In addition to the needy families who receive Christmas Baskets, elderly participants are also given gifts and food vouchers. These gifts can either be provided through a sponsor or through CAP. Most elderly are not matched with a sponsor, but a sponsor can choose to provide Christmas for an elderly person.

Eighty percent of sponsors this year have been repeat sponsors, according to Brenda Watts, who is in charge of Christmas Baskets. This is the most ever in 18 years.

As of late November, over 600 families had been matched and sponsored.

Distribution started on December 15.

A church service was held in each county for those families sponsored. After the

church service, families were given their gifts and food vouchers. Despite the economic downfall and budgetary cutback, CAP was still able to provide many needy Appalachian families with a Christmas they would not otherwise have, thanks to our generous donors.

Volunteers make a vital contribution to the work of the Christian Appalachian Project, adding newness and a breath of fresh air to programs that have been present in CAP counties for many years. In 2007, a volunteer who came to eastern Kentucky to participate in CAP’s Appalachian WorkFest, a spring break alternative program, began to think beyond her college years.

“WorkFest put some thoughts in my head,” said Kim Rice. “I began to realize how very planned my life was.”

A student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Kim was completing her degree in English and secondary education. She was planning to attend graduate school, but her experience with construction projects made her thoughts take a different path. “At WorkFest, I started to think about and pray about where God was calling me.”

Kim completed and mailed the application that all WorkFest volunteers receive after returning home after their week of service and she received a call from

volunteer director Kathy Kluesener inviting her to come to Kentucky for an interview. Finding money for a plane ticket was an obstacle, but Kim decided that overcoming that obstacle was a commitment she needed to make. The time she spent for the interview gave her additional information about CAP. For one thing, she learned that CAP does far more in Appalachia than the home repair project she saw as a WorkFest volunteer.

“I had never heard of CAP before WorkFest, and then we didn’t see that much,” Kim said.

The application included a comprehensive list and description of programs and she saw several programs that would make good use of her recently earned degree. Kim expressed an interest in CAP’s family and child development programs, adult education and Camp Andrew Jackson, which hosts youth and teen programs in addition to summer camping.

After the interview and decision process, Kim began working as a teacher in the Family Life Child and Family Development Center in July 2008. Although her degree is in secondary education and she taught teens as a student teacher, Kim is enjoying working with pre­ schoolers.

“My mom works with little kids and thought that I might change my mind, but no,” Kim said.

Although Kim plans to return to secondary education after completing her time as a vol­ unteer, she has transferred skills in classroom management to her pre-kindergarten students.

“There should always be a purpose to every action,” she said. “And kids need to do things that they can be proud of!”

As a WorkFest volunteer, Kim spent a week living in the Jackson House, the volunteer residence adjacent to Camp Andrew Jackson. As a long-term volunteer, she lives in a house on the grounds of the Family Life Center in Rockcastle County with 13 other volunteers.

“Living in a community is different than I expected,” Kim said. “And the Jackson House was different from the house I’m living in now.”

The major differences in the folks of her current house, are the wide variety in ages and stages of life. They are short-term and long­ term volunteers, men and women, recent college graduates, as well as retired people. “We all take different things from each other. It’s a very tightknit community of people who seem to genuinely care about one another,” Kim said.

Kim said she has been surprised at how well she has adapted to living so far away from Colorado. Although she left her family when she attended the University of Colorado, she was only 40 minutes away from home.

“I’m really quiet around people I don’t know, but I’ve been able to expand outside my comfort zone!”

Indeed, meeting new people and living in a community have become the things that Kim has enjoyed most about her volunteer experience. She describes the people in her community as those that she has come to rely on as she would fam­ ily. “I’ve only known some of them for a month, but I’ve really made a genuine connection with them.”

Kim admits that although she is still a “plan­ ner” at heart, her time as a volunteer has allowed her to see her future with a bit more flexibility.

She has been accepted into a graduate program at the University of Colorado that will enable her to continue with her education at the same time that she begins working as a teacher. She says she has always dreamed of teaching in an inner city school and will actively seek such a position.

“Although,” Kim says, “at CAP I’ve learned that poverty isn’t just in the inner city and it isn’t always something that you can easily see.”

1 stick butter or margarine

3/4 cup lard or shortening

1 large can of cream

1 egg

1-1/2 cups peanut butter

1/4 cup molasses

7 oz. marshmallow creme

1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon

Mix sugar, cream and butter in cooker. Boil 7 minutes after it comes to a full boil. Remove from heat, pour in marshmallow creme and peanut butter. Beat as still as possible, add nuts, if desired. Pour in plate. Cut when cool. Makes 5 pounds of candy.

2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. ginger 2 cups flour Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together sugar, shortening, egg, molasses, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and flour. Roll into small balls. Press out with a tumbler that has been dipped in sugar. Bake on a greased cookie sheet for about 12 minutes.

1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. vanilla Mix brown sugar, butter, syrup and salt. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 5 minutes without stirring, on low heat. Stir in vanilla and baking soda.

Pour over popcorn and stir well. Put in oven and bake at 250 degrees for 45 minutes. Stir every 15 minutes.

Let cool and break apart.

1 eight quart package of powdered milk 1 pound of NESQUIK 11-13 oz. of non-dairy creamer 1/2 cup of powdered sugar Mix well in LARGE container. Seal tightly to store.

Use 1/2 cup for a cup of hot chocolate, mixed with hot water. (You may need 1/2 cup of mix per cup) This keeps well.

M voond S a to 1 cup butter softened 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. almond extract 2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt Glaze: 1-1/4 cup powdered sugar 1 tsp. almond extract 4-5 tsp. water 1 stick of butter or margarine Heat oven to 400 degrees. Combine butter, sugar, almond extract in a large mixer bowl. Beat at medium speed until creamy. Reduce speed to low; add all remaining cookie ingredients. Beat until well mixed. Roll dough into 1” balls. Place 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet. Flatten to 1/4” thickness. Bake for 7-9 minutes until edges are very lightly browned.

Cool 1 minute before removing from cookie sheet.

Cool completely. Stir together all glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Decorate with glaze and sliced almonds.

Makes 3-1/2 dozen.

TOPPING: 1/3 cup oatmeal, 1/3 cup brown sugar.

Place butter or margarine in a 9” x 13” baking dish.

Heat oven to 350 degrees and melt butter in oven.

Mix egg, flour, sugar and milk together. Pour mixture in your pan with melted butter and mix lightly. Pour your berries on top of batter and top with oatmeal and sugar.

CAP is renewing emphasis on the importance of fathers in the lives of their children. “We always said ‘family’ but we thought, ‘mother,” Jean admitted. “But we know now that it’s that father who really influences the house. And it’s not just in Appalachia — it’s everywhere.”

“It might change more slowly here, where often they don’t have a profession to go to and need to be more dominant at home - and we all have to have a certain amount of control and power. We’ve got to let

those men know that they can have control and power and not ever strike a child. You can still have the child hug you and sit on your lap... You’re still a man if you do that.

Because CAP is placing emphasis on the total family, men are feeling more comfortable in school settings, and it is important to the children to know that their fathers are as involved as their mothers in the interaction between school and home.”
